Can you be counted on by others?

Real Servants maintain a low profile

Servants are content with quietly serving in the shadows

God loves weak people and everyone has weaknesses

We usually deny, defend, excuse, hide and resent weaknesses

Your weaknesses are not an accident

God is never limited by our limitations

Two great confessions:

In the midst of our activities and pressure of life, we forget:

• How much he went through for us

God's plan was never to impress prideful scholars or to find acceptance among the rulers of the ages

Some things never change:

• Graduate student in the laborary for 100 hours - OK
• Athlete who trains 6-8 hours a day - OK
• Executive working 60 hours a week - OK
• Someone passionate about Christ - Bad

Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing

God didn't come to impress the world. Are you?

How quick human nature is to accept credit for certain accomplishments
God made us and enables us to do everything

Why boast about our weaknesses?

• The cross affrirms our worth
• Frees us from performing

Who would want the power of God?

A person that truly boasts in the cross does not:

• Rely on recongnition of other to stay faithful
• Takes correction without prove their ways

• Project an image of self-worth

• Not trying to impress the crowd but the usher in a Kingdom

When Jesus prayed, heaven was in his mind

Their final destination was more important than their day to day victories and defeats

The key to successful first few weeks as a disciple is relationships. Make some specific decisions about how you will stay close to God and the other disciples in your life. Decide as well to get to know some other disciples and start sharing your new-found love for God with those you know and love. You will find that you will have good days, but remember – you’re just getting started.

Summary

In Gerar Abraham said, "Sarah is my sister." King Abimelech took her but God warned him in a dream. He restored Sarah to Abraham.

Observations

Genesis 20:3 - You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken
God's anger was revealed here once again. King Abimelech had no idea that he was sinning. However, just because we are not aware does not mean were without sin.  In fact, we may have sinned serveral time already today without knowing or being aware. We need just Jesus so much. Wheather it is for the strength to be righteous or the forgiveness of a mulitude of sins.

Genesis 20:6 - I know that you have done this with a clear conscience
God considers our lives and our hearts when he judges. Our hearts are central to our connection with God. King Abimelech had no intention to take a married woman to be his wife, he did it with a clear conscience. God provided a way out way out for him as he does for all those who are tempted. [1 Corinthians 10:13].

Personal Application

I usually don't have an issue with knowing right from wrong. It is usually that I am not aware of what I am doing. I am either not paying attention or not focused. I need to watch my life closely so I will be righteous in God's eyes and so others can be saved because of it [1 Timothy 4:16].

THe key ingredient masculinity is actually strength
Like Jesus, every man also needs to be developing moral, mental, social, and spiritual strength.
If men do not develop a sense of their own fortitude, they will never attempt hard things.
Opposite of masculinity is to be feminine, which means soft, pretty, and delicate.

Culture has spent decades telling women to “Rise up and be strong!” and telling men to “Sit down and be quiet!”

King David charged his son Solomon, “Be strong, therefore, and show yourself a man” - 1 Kings 2:2
If you are going to obey Him and be faithful to Him until the end, you must act like a man, embrace your masculinity, and hear His command to “Be strong!” - Joshua 1:9
When the enemy is attacking, you must keep up your resistance — “and having done everything, to stand firm” - Ephesians 6:13
“Act like men, be strong!” - 1 Corinthians 16:13

This is our responsibility as men. This is required of us to be faithful.

We need to choose to let go of childishness and foolishness
When I became a man, I did away with childish things - 1 Corinthians 13:11

Clinging to childhood while growing into manhood is like trying to run in opposite directions at the same time aka the “Peter Pan Syndrome”

Teen years are often wasted and fathers have become silent.

Rather than initiating serious conversations with wiser men, they goof off with fools in sports bars

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ - Ephesians 4:14-15

Having no accountability always leads to irresponsibility

One day we will stand before God one day and be held accountable for how we lived

Our actions not only have immediate consequences but eternal ones as well:

• We will all stand before the judgment seat of God - Romans 14:10
• He will “judge men’s secrets” - Romans 2:16
• He will bring to light the things hidden in the darkness, disclosing the motives of our hearts - 1 Corinthians 4:5
• He will judging the words of our mouths - Matthew 12:36
• He will testthe deeds we have done - Romans 2:5-8

This is wired into our consciences and confirmed throughout His Word

Everything in a man’s thinking changes when he realizes that he is only one heartbeat from standing before the Lord

Do you know for certain where you will spend eternity after you die?
Most men don’t understand what God requires for someone to be ready
We must take full responsibility for ourselves, our wives, and our children

Preparing for that day is why we should become accountable to one another

Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man - Ecclesiastes 12:13–14

Accountability dynamically helps make us into men - humble, wise, responsible, faithful men.

The following “heart hindrances” that will push your chidren away.

1. Your absence - they become sheep without a shepherd.
   • You are saying "You’re not important enough for me"
2. Your anger
   • React in anger, you can thoughtlessly say or do things in the heat of the moment that deeply wound your son or daughter’s spirit long-term
   • Love is slow to anger - 1 Corinthians 13:5
   • Humble yourself and quickly apologize
3. Unjust discipline
   • Must explain rules and consequences clearly using God’s Word and authority rather than their opinion - Ephesians 6:1-3
   • Ask yourself, “How can I train them without losing their heart?”
4. Harsh criticism
   • Don’t be sarcastic or belittling
   • Kids who have no freedom to fail will tend to rebel
5. Lack of compassion
   • Mercy warms hearts; carelessness distances them.
   • We must provide a listening ear, wise counsel, prayerful support, and a willing hand
   • Help them think of you as an oasis

Abraham's servant went to Nahor to find a wife for Isaac.

Observations

Genesis 24:1 - The Lord blessed him every way
God blessed Abraham, as he promised [Genesis 12:2], more than he could have asked or imagined [Ephesians 3:20] because of his belief that He would be faithful in his promises. In the investment world, it is about making a return on managed risk. Sometimes in Wall Street you can yield a good return with analysis. Other times, no matter what, you can lose large amounts of captial.  But with God, you can bank on his promises through faithfulness. There is no guessing and changing out mind, we just need to be faithful.

Genesis 24:4 - Go instead to my homeland
His son was nearing 40 years old and Abraham was old himself. He was looked to pass the torch on the next generation. Abraham again was faced with the challege of age-related life changes [Genesis 21:2]. The easy way to find Isaac a spouse would be to just look around the local area. The rational here might be "well, they do not follow God now but we can convert them later". This idea rarely works out and can cause much harm spiritually. Abraham chose again to be faithfully and to take the path less traveled. That path for his servant was 450 miles away to Nahor.

Genesis 24:8 - But under no circumstances are you to take my son there
Abraham nor his son were going to leave Cannon. There must have been some faithful prayer involved to find a way out of this situation [1 Corinthians 10:13]. How was Abraham going to find a wife for his son in a different land without standing in the way of God's promise? For both of them to go would have been an express of their lack of faith in God's promise. Also, if Isaac went a alone, he may have not returned. If Abrham went a alone, Isaac may have found a wife among the Canaanites while he was gone. The solution was a highly improbable plan (without God) for Abraham was to send his servant to find his wife. This way would be at a high cost to old man Abraham because of amount of work extra work he would need to do to cover while the servant was gone.

Application

I am convicted by the way Abraham chose to approach challenging situations. He did not chose the easy way or the first way that sounded right. He chose to be faithful and had a conviction to allow God's promises to fulfilled in his life. I did not mediate and pray through the challenges set before very often. Many times I just say or do the first things that comes to my mind. Those are often thoughts of the easy way or only way to go about things. I need to think about the bigger picture when making  decisions.

Prayer

Praying for heart of disernment and faithfulness in life's challenging situations.

I am the least of all the apostles and not worthy to called an apostle after the way I percuted God's church - 1 Corinthians 15:9

In mercy and grace, God calls, enables to serve, and declares worthliness

Paul voliently persecution of those he would later call his brothers and sisters - 1 Timothy 1:13

Why did God make Paul worthy to serve? It was due entirely to God's grace and goodness

Your worthiness to serve God does not come from any of your talents, abilities, or credentials

They have been providing the help you weren't here to give me - 1 Corinthians 16:17

Paul made a practice of giving and receiveing appreciation

He took time to praise Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus - Corinthian believers who traveled out of their way to encourage and assist Paul in his ministry

This was important enough to Paul he didn't just suggest that people show their appreciation - he commanded it

Paul: You must show your appreciation to all who serve so well

Why not thank people who make your life better? You will be blessed when you offer your thanks and so will they

While I was with you I would forget everything expcet Jesus Christ - 1 Corinthians 2:2

People who encoutered Paul understood what was most important to him: Christ sin-defeating death and grave-defeating life

He spent most of his life observing the Jewish laws and traditions but now everything was about Christ

Paul made it a point to forget everything else besides Christ:

• Impressive Education
• Impeccable religious pedigree
• Personal wisdom

Paul had more education and experiences more than anyone but chose to focus on one simple message of faith and love

Does your life convey the simple message that Jesus loves them?

8. New Testament Writers Challenge Readers to Check their Facts

• Luke's overt assertion of accuracy to Theophilus - Luke 1:1
• Peter's claim they didn't follow clevery devised tales but were eyewitnesses - 2 Peter 1:16
• Paul's bold declaration to Festus and King Aprippa about the resurrected Christ - Acts 26

9. New Testament Writers Describe Miracles Like Historical Events

Resurrection is the central event of Christianity

If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile - 1 Corinthians 15:17

If the Resurrection was fact at the time, the writers would have spent more time making their accounts longer and more detailed

The writers were level headed with other miracles they records

Miracles were described like a report would not a wild-eyed preacher, just the facts

Jesus promised his discples that the Holy Spirit would lead them to author what would be known as the New Testament

The Holy Spirit will teach you and remind you of everything - John 14:25-26

He will guide you into all truth - John 16:12-13

Message received by them:

• Revelation which God gave him - Revelation 1:1
• Paul words taught by the Spirit - 1 Corinthians 2:10,13
• The Lord's command - 1 Corinthians 14:37
• I recieved it by revelation from Jesus Christ - Galatians 1:11-12
• Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit - 2 Peter 1:20-21

Thrity five miracles in the book of Acts alone - The miracles confirmed the message. God's way of saying the message was really coming from him.

Made up? Not likely since they were often beaten, tortured, and killed for affirming them

The miracles never benefited directly or for entertainment. When the New Testament was completely written, the miracles stopped too (about 62AD)

Gathering of Jesus and is disciples is pattern for the early church. 

As the church moved into the gentile world, borrowed Greek and Roman models of meeting in the homes of the wealthy patron - 1 Corinthians 16:19

First church was led by the apostles and then elders, usually older respected by the community 

Bible does not specify how to organize, where to assemble or what methods should be used

Believers seem to be able to adapt to circumstances and usemodifed models used by other types of assoications

We are not left without guidance

They treasured the community and took pains to preserve it

There is a focus on the essentials and limits to the extremes and getting distracted

Church history (like Israel) can written as a tug of war the tendency to drift away and returning to the essentials
