Falling in Love with God - Heaven in Focus In heaven every knee will bow
Our hope and citizenship is there
If we are in love with God, we will be ready
God's idea of heaven may not be "recreational"
Our purest motivation to going to heaven must be to be with God
On the deepest level, he longs for us to be with him
The goal of our faith is salvation that we might be with him
Not just peace in heaven
Not just the promise of no tears or no trials
So many times we want heaven on earth - 2 Corinthians 4:13-18
Focus on the eternal - feel refreshed
Focus on what is seen - feel unsure, clouded and drained

Power of Spiritual Thinking - Escaping the Performance Trap
Performance trap - termed as perfectionism (not measuring up = sin)
Guilt and imagined guilt come from performance based - must learn to understand God's grace
Guilt-ridden people are not joyful people, poor advertisements for God's kingdom
Good thing to do our best but when mixed with pride is a wrong turn
Ex. Parental pride = making children reach a goal that unattainable
Rejection (or fear of) - is the root of most of our insecurities
We either pull back or prove ourselves through performance
Much of our competitiveness come from this source
Performance-oriented tries to conceal insecurities with a superimage of self
Deep-down we want love and acceptance
Real love is unconditional
Unless we are open about our negative points we will never reallty feel loved
Paul opened up his life:
2 Corinthians 6:11-13
- Spoke freely
- Open wide his heart
- Not withholding affection

Jews sought a miracle worker general ignoring scriptures like Isaiah 53
Greeks described god as apatheia - total inability to feel; looked don on uncultered Christians
God's plan was never to impress prideful scholars or to find acceptance among the rulers of the ages

30 Days at the Cross - Spectators or Sacrifices
Sacrifice - we think of pain, suffering, loss, and the uncomfortable concept of denying self
We hear: "Do what feels good"
Sacrifice is a voluntary presentation of ourselves to God to be used for his purposes
Jesus sacrificed his comfortable position with God to serve, heal, love, preach the good news
We can respond in serveral ways to the sacrifice of Jesus:
- Pretend it never happened
- Can decide to hide from the challenge
- Immerse ourselves in other thoughts
- Stand back with our arms folded
- Understand the facts but no personal acceptance or responsibility
Christ love needs to compel us - 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
Hiding is dishonest. Spectating is hypocritical. Committing is powerful.
What happens when you offer your body as a living sacrifice?
- It produces many seeds - John 12:24-25
- Life truly becomes life
- Our joy is multiplied
- It effects us and other for enternity
What types of sacrifices is God asking of you right now?
Is there is anyone, anything, any place, or any position you are holding on to?

Teach Us To Pray - God Enjoys Talking to Us
To truely know him, we must absorb his Word
We must enjoy his talking to us
God's Word was written with one purpose in mind - to communicate God's love:
- He promised to carry our burdens - Matthew 11:28
- We will have all we need - 2 Corinthians 9:8
- He will give us more than we can ask or imagine - Ephesians 3:20
- He will meet all our our needs - Philippians 4:19
- All disciples have angels to server them - Hebrews 1:14

Jesus with People - Seeing and Not Seeing Luke 7:36-50 - Simon, I have something to tell you
Jesus is able to cut through the muck - right to the heart
He had outspoken clarity - Luke 7:40
In truth Simon saw neither the woman or himself for how they really were
Jesus did see the woman - Her sin was obvious as her brokenness
He actions came from her new sense of reality
Once she saw Jesus, she responded the only way she could have - compelled by love - 2 Corinthians 5:14
Jesus' words should have cut Simon deeply - But he who has been forgiven little lives little
He wants to have a relationship with us
Think of trying to have a relationship with ant - talking with it, caring for it and especially dying for it - it is unfathomable!
How many times did Jesus change people's view if God?
Who am I most like: Simon or the sinful woman?

Promises of God - Standing on Promises For no matter how many promises God has made, they are all "Yes" in Christ - 2 Corinthians 1:20-22
Promises from others and one we have made > can make us highly skeptical about promises
They represent efforts to pacify us at the moment; the promiser does not usually have to fulfill the promise immediately

God fulfills his promises - every last one of them
God is:
- Trustworthy

No one like him - Kingdom Attitudes (part 2) Those who mourn
After seeing the impact and the hurt we have caused -

Wild at Heart - The Enemy (part 5) Not every thought that crosses your mind comes from you
- Where are those ideas coming from?
- Where are those feelings coming from?

Satan is behind that brutal assault on your on strength
There is a whole lot more going on behind the scenes of our lives than most of us have been led to believe
Behind the world and the flesh is an event more deadly enemy, one we rarely speak of and are even less ready to resist

One Another - Greet One Another Greeting seems to be pretty important aspect of relationships in the NT:
- 27x as a command
- 68x greetings of different forms in the NT
Four examples:
- Greet one another with a holy kiss - Romans 16:16
- I send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss - 1 Corinthians 16:20
- Greet one another with a holy kiss - 2 Corinthians 13:12
- Greet one another with a kiss of love - 1 Peter 5:14
Although somewhat strange to kiss in the US (prefer a hand shake or hug), the emphasis is the heart behind it
Need to show each other they are welcomed, loved and accepted - not just saying "I accept you" roboticly
Challenge for all of us is to really communicate the heart of love and acceptance
Identify 2 or 3 people that you have a hard time "accepting"
Will you be comfortable saying "God judge me just as I judge them"?

Kingdom First - Words are Big Jesus wanted people to get to heaven; it is the little things (our words) that will make us or break us - Matthew 5:37
If anyone considers himself religious and does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, is deceived and religion is worthless - James 1:26
Paul: most important ingredient?
Reliability - unreliable men will not only break God's chain but also discourages others - 2 Timothy 2:2
Most obvious way we can be unreliable is with our tongue
David about adversaries - Not a word from their mouth can be trusted - Psalms 5:9
Get character that speaks and lives the truth
Our "no" is okay if we say "no"
But in mostly it should be "yes" - 2 Corinthians 1:19
Jesus is our best example
Perhaps his favorite phrase was "I tell you the truth"
He did and he does
|
First the Kingdom - A Choice Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted - Matthew 5:4
Jesus speaks primarily of a spiritual morning by choice
Other options, could choose to:
Why would we choose mourning?
- Choose God over self
- Realize we have broken his heart
- Our response is to be broken, vulnerable, contrite, and humble
- No other response makes sense or brings healing
Spiritual mourning is an element of true repentance
Godly sorrow brings repentance, leading to salvation - 2 Corinthians 7:10
|
Kingdom First - Not Kidding His challenge to love our enemies and pray for our persecutors
His message totally defies world standards
Consider the alternative: responding like the world
We become enslaved by how other treat us
Regardless how much we love the brotherhood of believers, if we hold any bitterness or resentment - we are simply reduced to the level of the world
No matter how unjust or painful the treatment, God's grace is sufficient - 2 Corinthians 12:7-9
He expects us to have
Because he call to a life of righteousness which will produce enemies
Are we willing to go all the way and suffer for him - Philippians 1:29
He expects us to love and actively pray for the people who oppose us
How much do we persevere with people?
Do we answer back kindly when spoken to unjustly?

One Another - Forgiving One Another (part 1) Matters related to forgiveness:
Forgiveness often is not easy
Pain creates lasting memories
The more deliberate the sin or the more we have invested in a relationship, the greater the pain
Greater the pain = harder it is to forgive
Forgiveness may be hardest in the church
When we see sin in our brothers and sisters, there seems to be a much greater temptation of bitterness
Satan's top-ranked scheme may be to lead us not to forgive
Paul: I have forgiven in order that Satan might not outwit us - 2 Corinthians 2:9-11
If he can get us to forget the cross and create a different standard for our brothers and sister = victory for satan
Sin can blemish the church but there is no uglier blemish than one cause by the lack of forgiveness

To Live is Christ - Self Titled What is missing in so many lives is a clear sense of identity and purpose
Paul knew who he was and his his purpose of living/dying for Christ
In fact he had a relationship, example and a security destiny with Christ
If they spared his life, his purpose was to:
- Show the life of Christ in his life
- Tell others the good news
- Mature those who were disciples
If death, then a life in heaven with Christ
Either way, it was a "win-win"
Paul was going to be delivered, one way or another - 2 Corinthians 1:10
- Delivered from prison
- Delivered from his life and struggles
- Delivered from his loneliness and anxiety
What could be better than an unswerving commitment to someone greater than yourself?

- Pray when you do not want to
- Stand your ground against emotions and thoughts
- Overcome fear and to love in practical, unselfish way

- Three days of fasting and prayer? - Acts 9:9
- After 3 years of personal training? - Galatians 1:11-24
- After a visit to the 3 heaven? - 2 Corinthians 12:1-6
Geek verb ginoskein - close to intimacy of marriage
Paul knew about Jesus
He was will aware that simply doing the right thing did not give him intimacy
Do we really know Christ?
To become like him in his death is become like him in life:
- Give when you are tired
- Pray when you do not want to
- Stand your ground against emotions and thoughts
- Overcome fear and to love in practical, unselfish way
To live like this is to know Christ
The spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you - Romans 8:11

To Live is Christ - Joy and Crown Paul: My joy and crown is you standing firm in the Lord - Philippians 4:1
For the Greeks, the crown was a symbol of victory or a token of honor
Paul's crown was changed lives
The legacy was lasting and the reward was eternal
Paul to Corinthians: Result of the ministry not written on tablets but on human hearts - 2 Corinthians 3:2-3
If other people's spiritual growth is not our concern, it will never be our joy
If others are not our joy in this life, they will never be our crown after this life
What brought Jesus joy, brought Paul joy
Where do we get our joy in life?
Self-centeredness is the greatest roadblock of joy
We can not be concerned about the things of God if our own things get in the way
The Philippians were Paul's concern, his focus, his joy and his crown

To Live is Christ - Learned to be Content The secret of being content in any situations is to remember - I can do everything through him who gives me strength - Philippians 4:10-13
Content = Greek word autarkeia = self-sufficiency or not needing a thing
Secret he learned was not because he choose not to care
He learned it by:
- Listening to Christ everyday
- Holding on to his faith in the fiery trails
- Slowly and painfully
Paul did not raise from baptism knowing this, he came out of the waters ready to learn it
At one point - bad circumstances led him to despair of life itself - 2 Corinthians 1:8
What circumstances are in your life right now that could lead to a lack of contentment?

Life to the Full - Macho Mist (part 2) Spiritual adultery - How easy it is to flirt with the world if we fail to guard our hearts - Proverbs 4:23
In Jewish law, adultery is grounds for divorce
The Spirit cause to live within us envies intensely - James 3:5
The nature of God: He will tolerate no rivals for his love
God is a jealous God - Exodus 34:14
One of the quoted OT verse in the the NT is about pride - Proverbs 3:34
Much of the pride mention in the NT is bad: Pride goes before the fall - Proverbs 16:18
Pride mentioned in the NT is usually good: I take great pride in you - 2 Corinthians 7:4
It depends on where the pride is rooted and the attitude behind it
If you feel ineffective, frustrated, unproductive, opposed - it might be because God is opposing you because of your pride
He is trying to get your attention so you will turn back to him

Life to the Full - In His Steps (part 5) According to Peter, evangelism must be:

- Well-prepared - must know what we are talking about - 2 Timothy 2:15
- Be yourself / Be real - eloquence is not a requirement - 1 Corinthians 2:12
- Be gentle and respectful - No place for self-righteousness
- Non-retaliating - We will be opposed; If we retaliate, we lose; Turn the other cheek - Matthew 5:39
- Unhypocritical - People will be eager to change when they see the good news supported by your life

- We live in an unloving world
- We make limits to our love

- Two kinds of discipline

Giving (Part I)
- The Old Testament Precedent - Leviticus 27:30; Malachi 1:13-14
- The Israelites were commanded to give a tenth (tithe) of all their income to the Lord
- The Israelites had many other kinds of sacrifices (e.g. burnt, sin, grain, fellowship offerings) in addition to the tithe. The Israelites actually gave up to 33% of their income to God.
- The sacrifices were to be the best available. God will not accept a second rate sacrifice.
- New Testament Examples
- The Widow - Mark 12:41-44
She was commended not for what she gave, but her giving heart. She was totally dependent on God.
- Barnabas - Acts 4:36-37
He sold his property and gave all the proceeds from the sale to meet the needs of the church.
- The Macedonians - 2 Corinthians 8:1-3

Contagious Christian - Barriers to Relationships (part II) 1 Corinthians 15:33 - Bad company corrupts good character
- In context, Paul was specifically warning against those who deny the resurrection of Jesus
- In other situations, we need to make sure we are the one whose influence is prevailing
- Should be on the offense rather than defense
- Take captive of every thought and make it obedient to Christ - 2 Corinthians 10:4-5
If I spend time with non-Christians in public places, will my reputation be at risk?
Jesus not only risked his reputation but ruined it
He was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard - Luke 7:34
Tells you want kind of people He was around
Jesus said that He associated with sinners because they are sick people that need a doctor - Matthew 9:12-13
The danger was that the doctor may be mistaken as one of His patients
The religious people mutter how inappropriate it was for Him to associate with such disreputable people
Jesus cared much about the lost than his reputation

|
Fearing God - His Holiness and Ours How should we respond to the holiness of God?
Above all we should fear him
And like Jesus we should delight to fear him
We should perfect our holiness in the fear of the Lord - 2 Corinthians 7:1
We are to pursue holiness as an expression of our fear of Him
God is holy, we also need to practice humility
Deep humility is the only proper response as we see our sin in the light of His holiness
Nothing produces humility in Christianity as much as our sense of one's own sinfulness
We also grow in our gratitude to God for His mercy through Christ
Had sin never entered the world it would still be fitting for us to fear God

Followup: Grace (part I) The understanding of grace is the foundation for a love-motivated relationship with God, rather than one that is works-motivated. We can become Pharisees (knowing the requirements of Christian life but missing the heart motivation.
Similarly, overachievers (in the world or in the kingdom) are valued by others and value themselves based on their performance. The goal of follow up is to build security, self-esteem and worth based on God’s grace and love not on their Christian duty of perfect performance.
Question: How do you define “grace”?
- Undeserved forgiveness
- Acceptance even without perfect performance
- Real love (an “in-spite-of” love)
Question: Where does grace come from?
- Jesus receives the punishment for your sins instead of you - 2 Corinthians 5:21
- After baptism, Jesus blood continues to cover over our sin - 1 John 1:7

Prayer of the Righeous - God is Preparing a Place (part I)
Jesus wanted his disciples to remember where they were headed
Heaven thinking changes the way we feel and the way we pray
When Jesus prayed, heaven was in his mind
Even when the disciples recjoiced in the victories God had given them, Jesus reminded them what was most important was their names were written in heaven - Luke 10:17-20
Their final destination was more important than their day to day victories and defeats
We are being transformed into Jesus' likeness - 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
But when he appears and takes us to heaven, "we shall be like him" - 1 John 3:2
When we get to heaven, we will be in fellowship with God forever
On earth, we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror - 1 Corinthians 13:12
Pictures of the fellowship of heaven, not like being there:
- Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets will be there on Judgement Day - Luke 13:28-29
- It will be like a feast, people from everywhere in attendance
- Be surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses - Hebrews 12:1
- Peter, James and John had a taste with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah - Matthew 17
In this world we get to be with ones we love and respect, in heaven it will be great fellowship and unending

Fear of Failure - God Will Give Us the Grace We Need to Succeed by Sean Kiluk, San Francisco Church of Christ
2 Corinthians 9:8
God will give us all the grace we need to be successful in whatever role he has put us in. He did not put us where we are to fail, but to rely on him for success. Our problems come when we value success and praise more than knowing God. God forgives us, and he loves us even though we fail or sin. His love is unconditional. We need to have confidence in God's grace in everything. We will fail at times, but God has enough grace to ensure a victory in the end.
Decisions:
- Pray for an understanding of God's forgiveness: study the psalms and see David's trust in God.
- Believe that God has a plan for your life: be confident in his love.
- Build great relationships with other Christians who can bolster your faith.

Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ
Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens.
1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21
God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind.
2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8
We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples.
Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I.
Decisions:
- Pray through my dream list at least twice a week
- Learn to stop trying to be perfect and be grateful for his grace

Fear of Failure - I get knocked down, but I get up again by Angel Calica - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ
2 Corinthians 4:9
The scriptures say we will get knocked down. The question is are you going to stay down, or get up again and keep going? Failure tests what kind of character we have. Do you give up easily and stay down (quitter)? Or are you a fighter and get up again?
What are the sins that can keep us down?
- Pride
- Complacency
- Self pity
- Desiring comfort
- Fear
When I fail in my life, my temptation is to just not try anymore. When I give in to that temptation, I quit. I become isolated and hate being a Christian. I have to decide every day, to "get up" and to keep trying. When you admit your weaknesses, you realize that others have them too and that is the beginning of getting up. Let's admit when we are down and decide to get up again.
Hebrews 4:6
- Decide never to quit being a disciple.
- Decide to admit your weaknesses every day.
- Decide to obey the Bible when you get knocked down.

Protect Them
Fathers are the primary protectors - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
When walking down the isle
- The father is saying he has guarded her moral purity throughout her life for her husband - 2 Corinthians 11:2
- And the man she is marrying is proven morally, financially, and spiritually qualified to lead her, provide for her, and protect her from that day on
When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed - Luke 11:21
You should not only guard your own heart but your wife’s as well
Your children need help making the right decisions. That is why you are still their dad.
Being active on the front end as a father will pay off well and save you time and heartache on the back end.
Teaches your children to love wisdom instead of developing a greater appetite for the world.
Your job is not just to give your children boundaries but to use God’s Word to teach them how to think wisely
Train them to fear and love God and not to “set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.” - Proverbs 4:14–15
The older your kids get, the more they will need to understand the rationale behind your rules.
They willthen discern why certain things are right and wrong, wise and unwise, better and best.
This requires your courageous leadership!

Suffering with Benefits
Take pleasure in my weakness; when I am weak, I am strong - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Paul did much of his writting in prison and enduring arrests, beatings, threats against his life because of Jesus
People who take pleasure in suffering are usually the ones who need mental help.
Paul knew his suffering wouldn't last forever and that God had something better
He remembered his suffering would last a moment, while the glory to come would last forever
Suffering can:
- build endurance
- mature your faith
- remind you of your own weakness
- bring you to the point of complete dependance of him

Paul did much of his writting in prison and enduring arrests, beatings, threats against his life because of Jesus

Paul knew his suffering wouldn't last forever and that God had something better

Forgive and Forget
Now it is time to forgive and comfort him - 2 Corinthians 2:7
Paul told the Corinthian Christians to forgive a man who had caused him and the church a lot of trouble
God's purpose for discipline is to forgive and restore, not to condemn and reject
Paul apparently shared these believers' sense of injury but he eagerly extended forgiveness and restoration to give the man some hope and encouragement
Who in your life needs that kind of forgiveness and encouragement?

More Than Changed
They did not believe he had truely become a believer - Acts 9:26
After his conversion, Saul endured skepticism from the early Christians
Saul's encounter with Jesus changed the direction of his life but some who hear his message could not believer their ears
Wasn't this the same Saul who violently persecuted Christians? Yes and No
Saul was transformed - Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person - 2 Corinthians 5:17
In an instant, Saul transformed from a hateful, enemy of Jesus to his most vocal follower

Finish What You Start
Titus is a partner who works with me to help you - 2 Corinthians 8:23
Diligence motivates you to complete what you begin and often entails personal sacrifice or hardship
Titus demonstrated diligence in just about everything he did
Paul knew he could count on Titus to finish what he started and a bond of brotherhood was formed
This is why Paul sent Titus to Corinth as a personal delegate
Do others see you as someone who can be counted on to finished what you started even if it means personal sacrifice?

First Thing First
Adding or removing optional features of the church does not change the essesnce of its character
A "church" with just good plan/works but no real faith in Jesus Christ, His direction, His protection, etc is not a church at all
Types of diverstity in the church:
- Mistake an accidental feature of the church for an essential one
- Church can treat essential features as optional
- Church may burden itself with many accidental features to make it impossible to love the essential
- Church is so careful not to add accidental features that is can not adapt to changing circumstances
1,3,4 has a form of a church but #2 ceases to be a church
The most basic esssential feature of the church is that it's origin is from God
Ephesians 1:11-18 - God call you to be His holy people
Ephesians 1:22-23 - Church, His body, fullness of him who fill everything in everyway
The church is God's idea, God's choice, and God's act
God is acting, churching (reconciling), "ekklesia" = gathering of people, the world to Christ - 2 Corinthians 5:19
We need to rid ourselves of the view that the church displaces God as the primary actor and replaces him with human actors
If we forget this, we will try "to make it happen" by our own power
Our task is to let ourselves be churched by God
