| Falling in Love with God - Experiencing the Spirit What does it mean to NOT experience the Spirit? Paul had six questions (Galatians 3:15)
Our works will never validate our relationship with God Only relying on the Spirit, can we feel free to have deepening relationship with God Spirit helps with: Help not have a heart of stone - Ezekiel 36:24-27 Speak to us not to fear - Haggai 2:1-5 Encourage one to return to God - Isaiah 44:22 No phone calls, sermon, nor spiritual book can move my heart live the Spirit Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing - John 6:63 We are never alone on this journey - constant source of strength, wisdom, truth, and refreshment |
| Purpose Driven Life - What Drives Your Life? What shouldn't drive our life (will miss God's purposes for your life): People are driven by guilt Allows the past to control their future God turned a murder (Moses and Paul) into a leader and a coward into a hero God specializes in giving people a fresh start People are driven by resentment and anger - Resentment always hurts you more than it does the other person People are driven by fear - from unrealistic expectations and high-control situations People are driven by materialism - Your value is not determined by your valuables People are driven by the need for approval - those who follow the crowd usually get lost in it Living a purpose driven life, knowing your purpose:
 |
| Purpose Driven Life - The Reason for Everything The ultimate goal is to give glory to God God's glory = the expression of his goodness and all his other eternal qualities All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23
Giving glory to God will require us to change our priorities, schedule, relationships, and everything else

| Man of Prayer - Spiritual Protection (part 2) When a farmer planted a vineyard in Israel, he would build a hedge around it to keep foxes, pest, and other predators out God refers to Israel as His vineyard and he has built a hedge around it When Israel slipped into idolatry, God would remove the hedge and the nation would be attacked Example in Isaiah 5:5 The instant we pray for protection, it is in place = we know this by faith If not, I leave my family and I open to attack |
| Promises of God - I Will Sustain You Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he who will sustain you - Isaiah 46:3-4 God has promised that whatever life brings, he will be faithful with us to the very end He was telling the Jewish nation that he was there at the beginning and he will be with them all the way through He remains faithful to them whatever the circumstances |

| Promises of God - Hearts at Peace God makes clear his offer of peace Does God promise pleasing circumstances to those who trust him? No Paul, from a prison cell, said the Philippians could "peace of God which transcends understanding" - Philippians 4:7 Peace came from trusting in God - Isaiah 26:3 Trust is essential Must imitate childlike humility - Matthew 18:3-4 Children are generally are at peace They do not worry about the mortgage, stock market, bills They are content to let mom and dad tackle those issues We have to believe that God is in charge and he knows what he is doing |
| No one like him - His Submissiveness Not a characteristic most see in Jesus Mark 1:4-9 – Jesus was submissive to John – standing in line with everyone else Submission comes to tests our hearts Isaiah 53:7 – Jesus submitting to arrogant/self-center religious/non-religious when he was on his way to die |
| No one like him - Kingdom Attitudes (part 4) The Pure in Heart About genuineness and sincerity The grace can not from us alone Create in me a pure heart O God - Psalms 51:10 After being forgiving and giving we start seeing ourselves as good - must have pure motives The Peacemakers True peace only comes from God - Isaiah 11:1-9 No without the other attitudes The Persecuted If you live like this, people will not like you Ironically being a peace-maker will get you hated Jesus was the Prince of Peace Attitudes not natural; not to do but to be |

| Kingdom First - Helping Others to Make Peace Highest calling as peacemakers is to help other make peace with God We have been fitted with the feet of readiness that comes from the gospel of peace - Ephesians 6:15 Are proclaim peace to others - Isaiah 52:7 Jesus shed his blood so we could have peace He calls to die to ourselves so others can be made right with God Not superficial "world peace" but true peace in the heart of each man and women |
| First the Kingdom - The Only Door (part 1) Everyone who walks with God must come as a beggar Examples: David - conquered his enemies and ushered in a golden age

 |
| To Live is Christ - Considered Rubbish Not only did Paul give up his religious past and performance, he gladly counted everything else a loss too He would give up any claim of such things so he could gain justification by grace He considered them rubbish - Philippians 3:8-9 skubala = human waste or dung (KJV) He was saying the same thing as Isaiah - all righteousness acts are like filthy rags - Isaiah 64:6 The good we do is not rubbish but it is if those works are seen as the source and trusted in Our obedience, which is imperfect, does not make us right with God Christ's righteousness saves by faith The message of the cross calls us to sacrifice everything to Christ, who sacrificed everything for us Without his sacrifice, our sacrifice would be worthless to God and to man |
| Desire's Journey - An Invitation to Desire Christianity is not an invitation to become a moral person or a program to get us into a reforming society Christianity begins with an invitation to desire What does Jesus choose to talk about with the women at the well? All you who are thirsty, come to the waters - Isaiah 55:1-2 No wonder Jesus was feared. He came along and started appealing to desire To the lost - Jesus spoke of finding your way Again and again Jesus took them back to their desires What is it that you want? - Would have fallen on deaf ear if his message was unrelateable |

| Desire's Journey - Hardest Lesson to Learn God promises evern man futility and failure We spend much of our time attempting to end these curses It can not be done Will life ever be what I so deeply want it to be? We must have life - we can not arrange for it People avoid the lesson:
...rather than facing the truth - Isaiah 57:10 Some have seen that this will not work, yet they have faded into resignation, bitterness or dispair How do we accept that it can't be done with an open heart? |
| Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 1) He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds - Psalms 147:3 Part of you is pulled one direction, part of you the other Don't you sometimes feel a house divided? Take your phobias: Why are you afraid of heights, intimacy, or public speaking? All the discipline in the world will not get you to do these things - Romans 7-8 Part of me knows to pray is essential but other part wants to watch TV We are not wholehearted "Well, part of me does and part of me does not" Anytime we find ourselves doing something we wish we could stop but can not/ "unable" - ought to raise concerns Hebrew for brokenhearted is "leb shabar"

| Waking Dead - Spiritual Warfare (part 1) The heart of our enemy: determined to hinder and harm and ruin God's image bearers God is serious about life - Isaiah 45:2-3
What if we looked at the passage through the eyes of the heart? We are in an epic battle - things are not what they seem This is God personal mission - Isaiah 61:1
What is the hidden treasure? Our hearts |

| Contagious Christian - Starting Spiritual Conversations It is not enough to merely have high impact (HI) and close proximity (CP) We have got to talk about our faith and put the spiritual concepts of the gospel into everyday words People won't figure out the gospel out on their own - Romans 10 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways - Isaiah 55:8 Watching the life of a Christian (even a contagious one) won't be enough Someone has to articulate the gospel Must take the initiative and steer the the conversation toward spiritual topics This book contains a limited number of examples - meant to spur our thinking Must start with the heart-felt assurance that the gospel is good new my life and for others If you need a firmer foundation:
 |
| Mission - People Beginning of His ministry - Luke 4
He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with suffering - Isaiah 53:3 He was tempted in every way, just as we are - Hebrews 4:15 Jesus' heart went out to people and it moved him to action Their needs drove Jesus' ministry Our charge is to walk as Jesus walked Luke 10 illustrates Jesus' plan as he send out the 72 disciples He challenged them to rejoice because their names were written in heaven The end challenge was to go and do likewise - Luke 10:37 Cannot be done unless it costs us something Seeking and saving the lost is accomplished by preaching the gospel and helping people |
| Mission - Baptizing Them Heaven is a place of continual celebration God original place for us was to with him in a state of perfection
God had a radical plan to bring back into a relationship with him and to destroy the power that Satan had over us To this point, most Bible-believing world would agree What about baptism? Marginal matters are not in the Great Commission Paul included in his list of "seven ones" - Ephesians 4:4-6 We are united in baptism with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus - Romans 6 The master deceiver and father of lies has changed the road signs and send many to spiritual dead ends |

| Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nature Isaiah 40:12 v40:12a - God measures the water in the hallow of his hand We can probably hold about a tablespoon and not for very long 2/3 of the earth is covered in water and in places 6 miles deep Yet God says He holds all that water in his hand v40:12b - God marked off heaven with his breadth of his hand Breadth = the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your little finger, spread apart Ours is somewhere eight inches We can not even calculate the distance across the universe Nearest star beside the sun is 26 trillion miles away v40:12c - Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket? Weighted the mountains and hills? Baskets measurement is around 1/4 of a gallon He holds the dust in such a container and weighs the mountains on a set of scales As we think about these truths we will more and more appreciate God's greatness |
| Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nations Isaiah 40:15 surely same as behold Isaiah is saying "Think of this!" and stop and consider and ponder A bucket of water is something a drop is nothing Imagine going to the grocery store to pick up some fruit Once you go through the checkout line and saying "Please wipe the dust off, I don't want to pay for the dust" The concern seems absurd - that is how God sees the nations This is not to say nations are not imposing on a human level - just shows how infinitely greater God is Isaiah 40:16 - all the cedars in Lebanon would not enough for burnt offering Shifts of 10,000 men at a time were involved in cutting trees and floating to Israel's cost This still was not enough to be worthy of the dignity and greatness of God Isaiah 40:17 - Nation as seen before God:
His greatness no one can fathom - Pslams 145:3 We can never comprehend Him but only bow in awe and adoration before Him |

| Fearing God - Control of Rulers Kings and emperors are reduced to nothing before God and are completely subject to His sovereign power - Isaiah 40:23 The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; directs it where ever he please - Proverbs 21:1 He controls the destinies of rulers as well as their actions:

| Fearing God - No Darkness at All Note: The power when out when I was in the middle of this study God is holy not only from his creation but from sin Be holy, because I am holy - Leviticus 11:44-45 He is light and in him there is no darkness at all - 1 John 1:5 Not only is he the only one, God is totally pure. Isaiah 6 set both God's holiness and our show the only appropriate response to it When God's holiness, his transcendent majesty, and His moral purity.... Our reaction becomes a realization of our own insignificance Even though Isaiah was considered righteous man, his holiness suddenly became "unclean" - Isaiah 6:5 The word "unclean" is significant because it is what the leper must cry out when they walk around - Leviticus 13:34 Isiah saw his sinfulness as moral leprosy |
| Fearing God - Holy Justice, Holy Mercy But God does not leave Isiah devastated We tend to think of justice in a positive sense - child murdered and the community wants to see justice The murder does not want to see justice The wages of sin is death - in this sense we don't want to see justice done God's justice is both holy and perfect God always wants to give mercy He can not be lenient and can not violate His own justice The solution is Christ - he reconciled God's justice and mercy The Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all - Isaiah 53:6 |
| Followup: Humility II (part II) What’s in store for the humble person?
Who is it hardest for you to be humble towards? Why? Are you willing to change these things so you can please God? How can I help? Isaiah 66:2 - God is excited about the humble person. How to be humble when you sin:

To clothe yourself with Christ is to clothe yourself with humility. |
| Genesis 17 - Abram becomes Abraham SummaryGod made a covenant with Abram and renamed him Abraham. He renamed Sarai Sarah and promised them a son. The men were circumcised. ObservationsGenesis 17:9 - As for you, you must keep my covenant Personal ApplicationI know I can one-sided and stubborn in my thoughts and sometimes in my relationships. When I get my mind set to do something, that is the way it is. This can be a strength in some situations but a very big weakness if I am contrary to God's thinking. I need to be humble and allow God to change my thoughts and my ways. |
| Mind Change - God is in control God is in control Today…tomorrow…forever. God is God. Nothing is outside his sovereignty. He cannot lose control. He is never surprised or unprepared. God never asks, “What are we going to do now?” Psalms 2:2-6 - The Lord is not bothered by a united front Psalms 90:2 - you brought the world into being Isaiah 50:7 - LORD helps me, so I am not humiliated |
| Mind Change - God will provide God will provide No matter what the need. He cares. He allows us to have needs. He sees our needs. He meets them all. Isaiah 58:11 - He will give you renewed strength Matthew 6:31-32 - Father knows that you need them Philippians 4:19 - God will supply your every need |
| Mind Change - Joy Joy, not suffering, will be eternal. Pain is bearable when it leads to something. We are on our way to everlasting joy. “The toils of the road will seem nothing when we get to the end of the way.” Isaiah 51:11 - Everlasting joy will crown their heads Isaiah 61:7 - Everlasting joy will be theirs Romans 8:20-21 - Creation itself will be liberated |

Even in something that dashed your hopes. All things means all things. | Ministry - Compassion: The Heart of Jesus John 11:33-35 In a world so full of pain, hardship and suffering the compassion of Jesus lights the world. It is a comfort to know that "our God is full of compassion". Psalms 116:5 Jesus was deeply moved by people's suffering. Jesus sincerely cared and invested his heart in others. Does the hardship of others cause us to invest our hearts or harden them? Do we imitate Jesus' heart? We can learn to be compassionate only when we have allowed Jesus to comfort us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

| Fear of Failure - Failure to speak the truth by Adesha Johnson - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ Isaiah 59 Failure to speak the truth does not have to be fatal A character sin in my life is deceitfulness. I'm insecure and will often turn to something other than God to find security. Ironically, when I'm in this state, I really feel like I'm doing the right thing! Isaiah 59:1-21 opened up my eyes to the inner workings of deceit. Verse 13 shows how deceit begins and ends. First, I rebel against the Lord by having shorter prayer and bible study and not turning to him as soon as I've sinned. Second, I start lying about how I'm doing and feeling. It's at those times that I find myself easily embittered at people around me. My bitterness is a direct result of the guilt I feel because of my deceit. Here's the bottom line: The Lord loves the truth! Decision: To be truthful daily in regards to sin, guilt and how I am feeling and to continue studying out Truth in the scriptures. |

| Fear of Failure - God Sticks By Us When We Fail by Rhys Kiaaina - Region Leader: San Francisco Church of Christ Isaiah 49:15 Whenever I fail, I feel like I am being left behind. That somehow God has left me. But Scripture says God remembers. He will not forget me. If we are separated, the reality is that I have left Him. Whenever I fail, I doubt God's motives. I think He is angry with me and disappointed in me. But God has you and I engraved on the palm of His hand. Isn't that incredible? He's got a tattoo of you and me on the palm of His hand! God made a decision a long time ago that He would stick by us for life! Whenever I experience failure, I get the 3-D's: Depressed, Distracted, and Discouraged. I focus on what I have failed to do, rather than what God is able to accomplish. God's love is deeper than a mother's for a child. There is no reason for me to get discouraged because God has always "got my back". Decisions:

| Prayer of the Righeous - More Powerful Than We Can Imagine (part II) Two different responses to God's power: 1. Moses doubted God's power to feed the 600,000 men 2. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego faced the furnace John the Baptist described God's power and man's insignifiance - Matthew 3:3
Imagine trying to asking a clerk compensate for dust when weighing an item for purchase - it would be absurd How do you current view God? |

| Men Leave Childhood Behind We need to choose to let go of childishness and foolishness Clinging to childhood while growing into manhood is like trying to run in opposite directions at the same time aka the “Peter Pan Syndrome” Teen years are often wasted and fathers have become silent. Rather than initiating serious conversations with wiser men, they goof off with fools in sports bars Too many men want the freedoms, rewards, and privileges of manhood but only the responsibilities of boyhood Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ - Ephesians 4:14-15 Do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature - 1 Corinthians 14:20 The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands - Isaiah 32:8 |

| Overcoming Inadequacy ISAIAH It's over, I am doomed - Isaiah 6:4-5 Isaiah looked into the mirror of God's perfection and saw his own inadequacy starting back at him He knew he wasn't fit to serve God, much less stand in his presence God sent an angel and tocuhed his lips with coal and pronounced his guilt removed and sins forgiven - Isaiah 6:6-7 Isaiah changed and boldly called out, "Here I am. Send me" - Isaiah 6:8 |

| A Choice I will not test the Lord like that - Isaiah 7:12 Ahaz, the ungodly king of Judah, found himself in a dilemma of equally difficult alternatives Assyria, a dominate power of the day, was a growing treat to Judah, Israel, and Syria His choice was to side with his enemies - Israel and Syria or Assyria and trust God would work things out or side with Assyria Ahaz made an unwise chose to side with Assyriaw which had disastous consequences for Judah - 2 Kings 16:7-9

| Man of Hope Even when there was no hope, Abraham kept hoping of becoming a father of man nations - Romans 4:18 Hope - a sense of expectancy even when the circumstaces suggest packing it in and giving up At age 100 years Abraham still had no children Humanly speaking, Abraham had every reason to wonder if God had forgotten his promise Abraham remained convicted God would keep all his promises God blessed Abraham and his wife with a son - he became a father of many nations Those who trust in me will never be put to shaem - Isaiah 49:23 Has God given you an yet-to-be-fullfilled promise? Have you grown weary in waiting? |
| God's Communication with man God communicates to us through his creation and conscience (natural revelation) - Romans 1:20 Couldn't He just appear to us, yes... but at the same time that might interfere with our free will - He can not ravish, only woo - Isaiah 45:15 He also chosen a more suble of communication: Written language is a precise medium of communication is that can easily be duplicated How are we suppose to know if this book is really from God? Like a king's seal on a royal message, God reveals miracles only he can do to prove the message is from Him A miracle happens rarely by supernatural causes So if God wanted to confirm the word of God through Moses, Jesus, Paul or anyone else he uses miracles to do so If we believe in the greatest miracle, creation, then every other miracle in the Bible is easy to believe

| Who is Jesus? Messiah Jews do not believe Jesus is who Christians say he is Up until about 1,000 years ago, Jew mainly interpreted Isaiah 53 as a prediction of the coming Messiah but now read it as the Suffering Servant aka the nation of Israel But there is some issues with this thought:
In fact, there is only one possible candidate for all of these to be correct:
Jews have been waiting for a political messiah but did not realize the Messiah would come as a lamb of God to be slaughtered for the sins on the world - Isaiah 53:7 Even demons know that Jesus is the Messiah - James 2:19 |

| The Essential Mission The New Testament vision of the essential work can be captured: to witness or to manifest what is going on in heaven So you may declare the praise of him who called you out of darkness - 1 Peter 2:9 Wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities - Ephesians 3:10-11 Even if it must speak as a lone voice to a disobedient people - Isaiah 65:2 People usually form associations to deal with a single challenge It also well known that associations tend to stray from their founding purposes Second and third generation leaders often do not share the orginal vision, their work becomes a job rather than a mission Officers are tempted to place their own interests above the orginal mission Those interest tend toward unrelated purposes and many times are political in nature creating division among the group, at this point the mission is hijaked
