God's plan was never to impress prideful scholars or to find acceptance among the rulers of the ages

Some things never change:

• Graduate student in the laborary for 100 hours - OK
• Athlete who trains 6-8 hours a day - OK
• Executive working 60 hours a week - OK
• Someone passionate about Christ - Bad

Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing

Fathers are the primary protectors - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
When walking down the isle

• The father is saying he has guarded her moral purity throughout her life for her husband - 2 Corinthians 11:2
• And the man she is marrying is proven morally, financially, and spiritually qualified to lead her, provide for her, and protect her from that day on

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed - Luke 11:21

You should not only guard your own heart but your wife’s as well
Your children need help making the right decisions. That is why you are still their dad.
Being active on the front end as a father will pay off well and save you time and heartache on the back end.

Teaches your children to love wisdom instead of developing a greater appetite for the world.
Your job is not just to give your children boundaries but to use God’s Word to teach them how to think wisely
Train them to fear and love God and not to “set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.” - Proverbs 4:14–15

The older your kids get, the more they will need to understand the rationale behind your rules.
They willthen  discern why certain things are right and wrong, wise and unwise, better and best.
This requires your courageous leadership!

Take pleasure in my weakness; when I am weak, I am strong - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Paul did much of his writting in prison and enduring arrests, beatings, threats against his life because of Jesus

People who take pleasure in suffering are usually the ones who need mental help.

Paul knew his suffering wouldn't last forever and that God had something better

He remembered his suffering would last a moment, while the glory to come would last forever

Suffering can:

• build endurance
• mature your faith
• remind you of your own weakness
• bring you to the point of complete dependance of him

Take pleasure in my weakness; when I am weak, I am strong - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

People who take pleasure in suffering are usually the ones who need mental help.

Paul knew his suffering wouldn't last forever and that God had something better

He remembered his suffering would last a moment, while the glory to come would last forever

Suffering can:

• build endurance

• remind you of your own weakness
• bring you to the point of complete dependance of him

Now it is time to forgive and comfort him - 2 Corinthians 2:7

Paul told the Corinthian Christians to forgive a man who had caused him and the church a lot of trouble

God's purpose for discipline is to forgive and restore, not to condemn and reject

Paul apparently shared these believers' sense of injury but he eagerly extended forgiveness and restoration to give the man some hope and encouragement

Who in your life needs that kind of forgiveness and encouragement?

They did not believe he had truely become a believer - Acts 9:26

After his conversion, Saul endured skepticism from the early Christians

Saul's encounter with Jesus changed the direction of his life but some who hear his message could not believer their ears

Wasn't this the same Saul who violently persecuted Christians? Yes and No

Saul was transformed - Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person - 2 Corinthians 5:17

In an instant, Saul transformed from a hateful, enemy of Jesus to his most vocal follower

Titus is a partner who works with me to help you - 2 Corinthians 8:23

Diligence motivates you to complete what you begin and often entails personal sacrifice or hardship

Titus demonstrated diligence in just about everything he did

Paul knew he could count on Titus to finish what he started and a bond of brotherhood was formed

This is why Paul sent Titus to Corinth as a personal delegate

Do others see you as someone who can be counted on to finished what you started even if it means personal sacrifice?

Proof of Jesus is God:

• He filfilled numerous messianic prophecies
• He lived a sinless life and performed miracles
• He predicted and then accomplished his own resurrection from the dead

Sinlessness confirmed:

•  Peter: Jesus is unblemished and spotless - 1 Peter 1:19
• John: In Him (Jesus) there is no sin - 1 John 3:5
• Paul: Jesus knew no sin - 2 Corinthians 5:21
• Writer of Hebrews: Jesus was without sin - Hebrews 4:15
• Phariesses: could not find fault - Mark 14:55
• Pilate: found him innocent of any wrong doing - Luke 23:22

Adding or removing optional features of the church does not change the essesnce of its character

A "church" with just good plan/works but no real faith in Jesus Christ, His direction, His protection, etc is not a church at all

Types of diverstity in the church:

1. Mistake an accidental feature of the church for an essential one
2. Church can treat essential features as optional
3. Church may burden itself with many accidental features to make it impossible to love the essential
4. Church is so careful not to add accidental features that is can not adapt to changing circumstances

1,3,4 has a form of a church but #2 ceases to be a church

The most basic esssential feature of the church is that it's origin is from God

Ephesians 1:11-18 - God call you to be His holy people

Ephesians 1:22-23 - Church, His body, fullness of him who fill everything in everyway

The church is God's idea, God's choice, and God's act

God is acting, churching (reconciling), "ekklesia" = gathering of people, the world to Christ - 2 Corinthians 5:19

We need to rid ourselves of the view that the church displaces God as the primary actor and replaces him with human actors

If we forget this, we will try "to make it happen" by our own power

Our task is to let ourselves be churched by God
