The minimal consensus of nearly all scholars is the disciples believed that Jesus rose from the dead
But some skeptics offer some explanations:
Hallucinations - was experienced by a group not an individual, like a dream: can't say we had a dream last night. Even it is the same subject, each person would experience a dream completely differently
Disciples went to the wrong tomb - if this was the case, Romans authorities would have paraded Jesus' body around as proof. Jesus' many appearances would need to be explained
Appearent Death Theory - Romans were professional executioners. It is highly unlikely Joesph and Nicodemus would have mistakenly embalmed a living Jesus - John 19:40. Serveral non-Christian writers confirmed his death
Disciples Stole His body - Why did every one of the witnesses continue to say Jesus had risen from the dead when they could have saved themselves by recanting that testimony?
A Substitute Took Jesus' Place on the Cross - This explaination is offered by many Muslims today (Sara 4:157-158). Writting from 600 years later saying the disciples, Romans guards, Pilate, the Jews, Jesus' family and friends were all mistaken? Do we believe someone else had to the power to rise from the dead?
