2009-04-15 - Promises of God - Importance of Repentance
God's goodness and God's blessing are designed to lead us to repentance - Romans 2:4

God's will is for us to hear about God's faithfulness and his promises and to decide:
  • To please him
  • To change
  • To serve him better
Dynamic relationship between promises of God and our repentance:
  1. God's promises and faithfulness should inspire repentance
  2. We need to rely on the promises even as we commit to repentance
  3. Truly become repentant
  4. We refrain from taking personal credit because we understand we are being recused

2009-05-07 - No one like him - His servant heart (part 2)
Many ways to set our mind
  • Career
  • Car
  • House
Jesus set his mind on serving – “What can I give?”
Not looking for comfort
Not about the way he looked

Jesus saw himself as a servant, leading others to be servants

How would this thinking change – marriage, family, church, workplace, neighborhood?
Jesus was about meeting needs
  1. Good Shepherd (John 10:11)
  2. Living Bread (John 6:51)
  3. Great Physician (Matthew 9:12)
Most precious thing to Jesus was his relationship with the Father – but did not hold on that either for our sake

2009-05-10 - No one like him - His Courage
Submissive yes, Timid and fearful, no.
Submissiveness, not cowardly or silence – gave up self for others

Wanted loyalty over their families and friends (Luke 14:25-27)
They must give up everything for salvation (Luke 14:28-33)

Who can accept it? (John 6:60)
Many no longer followed him (John 6:66)

1. Rich young ruler found that Jesus’ message would not change for anyone (Luke 18:18-30)

2. Jesus never held back – Jesus and turning over tables of thieves
  • Came from the wrong town
  • No educational credentials
  • Follower were common people
3. Courage to go to the cross

2009-05-18 - No one like him - The Kingdom of God
First time God said the time has come

Something had come upon us
Something within us

Kingdom is like:
  • king who prepared a feast
  • yeast
  • mustard seed
  • a net
  • treasure
  • man searching for fine pearls
  • man who sows seed
  • king who wanted to settle accounts
  • landowner who hired workers
Kingdom is good news

Kingdom is so different that it requires us to change

What does new kingdom person look like?
  • Humble (heart like a child) - Matthew 18:2-4
  • Surrender (your will be done) - Matthew 6:10

2009-05-28 - No one like him - Conflict and Controversy (part 1)
Established positions were threaten

Again and again Jesus said “You have heard it said … but I say to you…”

Some say Jesus was the ultimate nice person but he was a prophet (reputation for being offensive)

Examples in Matthew 23:
  1. v3 – Called them hypocrites
  2. v4 – Put heavy burdens on other but did nothing themselves
  3. v5 – Everything was for show
  4. v13 – Behavior blocked themselves and others from entering the kingdom
  5. v16-22 – Making ridiculous rules about swearing
  6. v23-24 – straining about some fine point and neglecting justice, love, faithfulness
  7. v25-28 – Outward show and no inward change
  8. v29-30 – They had the same attitude as the people who killed the prophets

2009-05-30 - No one like him - Conflict and Controversy (part 3)
Jesus did not just hang around the sick but he had a message and plan for them to get well

Today is the opposite problem – association with all kinds of people; but without a message – bring the spirit without the truth

Sin must be dealt with at the heart level; not just outwardly like the Pharisees – could not be cured by rules or rituals

Living like Jesus (living a totally different life) will cause conflict and controversy

Living like Jesus entails:
  • New priorities – with people who have different ones
  • New loyalties – with people who have different ones
  • Mission is to reachout and share with people why they need his message
  • Associate with sinners but call them change
  • Love unconditionally; Live radically – declare this is the way to live
Some will welcome the message; the majority will not

2009-06-02 - No one like him - The Empty Tomb (part 1)
Disciples were confused with ups and downs of the week (Joyous entrance into Jerusalem then the cross)

Without the resurrection there would be no church or New Testament; disciples would have disbanded and movement would have ended

The resurrection gave them courage to preach the resurrection: Acts 1:22; 2:24,32; 3:15; 4:2,10, 33; 5:30

Must be together – cross and resurrection

Cross only – a tragedy; Resurrection only – just another miracle

Changed the disciples lives forever

2009-06-04 - No one like him - Count Cost (part 1)
Not a question of how hard or difficult but if it is true
Not all struggling is bad
Jesus calls us to:
  1. Be ready to be uncomfortable
  2. Be ready for big changes
  3. Be ready to follow the narrow road
  4. Be ready to give up anything
Does it work?

Jesus was not out of touch – Matthew 9:36
Jesus had a clear view of love and generosity – John 10:33
Kingdom now in the present age

Fix our eyes on Jesus
We need to deal with OUR heart

Jesus did not just come to amaze
He came to call people to change their lives

He was upfront with commitment level
Must deny self
Kingdom is the greatest thing to possess
It will cost you all you have
Must carry his cross
Commitment must surpass relationship with family (Jesus: you must love me more)

2009-06-12 - A Life of Impact - Expectation and Encouragement

Expectation

Mark 1:1

  • He expected a lot out of Himself
  • He knew he was born to save the world
  • Wallow in self-pity, to cower in fear, or simply giving up is inappropriate behavior

Mark 1:2-8 - People consistently live up to the perceptions others have of them

Encouragement

Mark 1:9-11

  • He told him that he was special
  • God is a god who initiates love
  • How would we change if we realized the amount of love God has for us

2009-06-17 - A Life of Impact - Gentleness and Fueling

Gentleness

Mark 1:29-34

  • At times we need to raise our voices and push in order to get things done.
  • At the same time using gentle tone and pitching in to help will accomplish far more good.

Fueling

Mark 1:35-39

  • People who love sleep don’t usually change the world
  • Jesus slept when he had the time
  • Jesus was extremely eager to pray
  • Most of us live with only a vague idea of purpose
  • Our personal ministries – can be tempted to lose the fire, to settle down, and get comfortable
  • We laugh and patronize at younger friends who are “idealist, zealots, and radicals

2009-06-22 - A Life of Impact - Nonconformist

Mark 2:15-17

Nonconformist

  • He challenged popular thinking to inspire them to think again about how they were living.
  • Are you willing to rock the boat?
  • People of impact won’t accept because we have always have do it this way.
  • Every great historic change has been bought by blood or the reputation of non-conformists.
  • People who are unwilling to venture out into unfamiliar territory will never men of impact
  • More difficult for people who feel they have achieved a great deal

Protector

  • Legalism occurs when one values an easy decision over true justice.
  • When Jesus gave direction, he assumed responsibility for their actions
  • Jesus stood up for his disciples.
  • They probably felt very safe around Him (love always protects)
  • Without protection, insecurity can be seen more and in the “Me” generation.

Challenger

  • To say that Jesus quietly and humbly pointed out their wrongs would be inaccurate
  • He didn’t go after their ego, he went straight to the heart.

2009-07-11 - A Life of Impact - A passion for truth

Mark 7:14-23 - He had no stomach for the misdirection spread by the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law

High Expectations

  • He let them know that they were spiritually stupid.
  • How many of us are willing to rebuke when asked a stupid question by people who should know better?
  • Jesus was determined that these men would rise above the rank and file.
  • He got upset and urged them to change
  • The dreamer never gives up the dream.

Blame

  • The responsibility for our actions resides with us, the decision makers, and not with our environment.
  • We are not simply a product of our environment; environment is determined by our choices.
  • We cannot rightly blame others or fate or circumstances for our behavior
  • We must take responsibility for the consequences of our decisions
  • Changes in people occur from the inside out. · Involves helping people to acknowledge what they are really like deep down and then to deal with their inner self
  • We cannot on our own change our own or someone else’s heart.
  • We must realize how desperately we need God’s intervention in out lives.
  • The Bible exposes, in a unbiased way, the true qualities of our hearts.
  • Deep character changes in our lives fuels our faith.

2009-07-12 - A Life of Impact - Firmness and Flexibility

Firmness and Flexibility

Mark 7:24-30

  • Are you able to say “no” to people? Jesus was.
  • Some of us are unable to deny anybody anything.
  • Others are too inflexible and become unwilling to make any exceptions.
  • Jesus was not afraid to change his mind.
  • We need to think for ourselves and make the right decisions.
  • If we want to make a difference, we must be willing to disappoint some people.

2009-07-22 - A Life of Impact - Retreats

Retreats

Mark 9:30-32

  • Sometimes the only way we can truly give ourselves to the few is by making ourselves unavailable to the many.
  • Retreats are a change in routine to ponder perspective to help in our personal growth.

Openness

  • Jesus was very open with his disciples about difficult challenges and troubles that lay ahead for him.
  • Through his openness, Jesus led the way for his disciples to be open with each other.
  • Hiding produces shallow relationships and weak bonding – leads to dissolution of the group
  • Few are open with troubles to someone who has never been open to them.

2009-08-01 - A Life of Impact - Anger
Anger

Mark 11:11-19
  • He was furious about the fruitfulness of another “tree” that he had planted, watered, weeded, fertilized.
  • Jesus cleared the temple at the beginning of His ministry and also here at the end of His of His ministry
  • There was no fear of God.
Restraint
  • Jesus knew the right place and the right time the do the things needed.
  • He was disciplined and self-controlled for just the right time.
Relentlessness
  • What made Jesus angry was the stubborn refusal of most to change.
  • A willingness to change is a precious and seemingly rare behavioral characteristic.
  • Become exceedingly insecure and defensive when we are awakened to the existence of personal deficiencies.
  • We must also get angry about obstinacy in our own lives and other people’s lives.
Fearsomeness
  • Why didn’t anyone try to stop Jesus as he was taking over the temple? (Only one person and many of them)
  • They knew that they were in the wrong.
  • Teachers of the law and chief priests feared Jesus
  • If people consider you a “nice guy” and are not in awe of you, you probably won’t have much impact.

2009-10-07 - One Another - Admonish Questions
Who can best admonish or coach someone?
  • someone in close relationship
  • someone with credibility in the area of concern
  • someone who is a person of humility
  • some who is allowing the word of Christ richly dwell in them
What is the goal of admonishing?

To help another person grow and change and be transformed more fully into the image of Christ
  1. not making the person receiving look bad
  2. not making the person giving look good
  3. not to give someone authority or superiority
  4. not to force someone to do something they do not want to do
  5. not to embarrass someone
  6. not to keep people in line

2009-10-21 - Wild at Heart - An adventure to live (part 4)
The problem with modern Christianity is it’s obsession with principles
Real test of a man comes when all his resources fail
Living and loving – jump in with both feet

Ask your wife what is wrong? Dangerous – very much a mystery
She does not want to be solved; she wants to be known

We know how to be nice but we really do not know how to fight

Christian life should not be chaotic or be flagrantly irresponsible.
Break away from it all and head off into the unknown God
Adam - No formula for how he was to handle mess
God honored and did not hold his hand

Was not left alone to face life
The only way to live in this adventure – is in an ongoing relationship with God
Control we crave is an illusion – it in exchange for God’s relationship
Moses and God knew each other
David was after God’s own heart
Jesus made God known – John 15:15
What are you teaching me here, God?

What are you asking me to do or let of?
What in my heart are you speaking to?

2009-10-22 - Repentance - What Happened (part 1)
What ever happened to repentance?
Millions claim Jesus as their Savior, but neglect to make him Lord – want forgiveness without repentance

Most spend a considerable amount of time of pondering change
While we pursue change, we demand change on our own terms
Examples – self-help, self-improvement
Today’s seekers of Christianity – “shopping” for a church

Do we truly love if we neglect to call the unrepentant to repentance?
In an effort to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative” we have treated sin and repentance as the embarrassing uncle
Why am I an uncommitted believer?
  • Sermons are boring
  • Members are unfriendly to visitors
  • Wonder about the quality of the nursery care
  • Church seems to more concerned about my wallet
  • Music isn’t very upbeat

2009-10-23 - Repentance - What Happened (part 2)
Congregation of consumers ultimately switches products, wholly dissatisfied with a church product

New Testament Church Consumer-Driven Church
Repent for the Kingdom of God is near “Meet new friends and get to know your neighbors”
Bear fruit in keeping with repentance… “Enjoy upbeat music with a contemporary flavor”
If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself “a new church designed to meet my needs”

Like a doctor – it would be absurd to change their diagnose and treatment to the wants of the patient.

Repentance is revival

Questions:
  1. Have you made a recent decision to change something in your life?
  2. Why is it more comfortable to make changes on your own terms? What changes do you seek to make?
  3. How well do you respond to reproof – from the Bible and from fellow Christians?
  4. Have you ever changed a fellowship, that is, church membership, to avoid a call to repentance?

2009-10-24 - Repentance - What It Is (part 1)
What is repentance?

Repentance is the first word of the gospel

Na,,ham = most often used of God’s repentance
Shu, b = a physical turning or returning of an object
epostrepho = a Greek work similar to Shu, b

metanoia = used as the first word in the gospel (change in mind and attitude)
  • meta = after, change, implies there was a before
  • noia = denotes the faculty of physical and intellectual perception, then also the power to arrive at moral judgments

“he came to his senses” – Luke 15:17
“he opened their minds” – Luke 24:45
“open their eyes” – Acts 26:18
“set their minds on things above” – Romans 8:5

2009-10-25 - Repentance - What It Is (part 2)
Repentance is to feel sorry or to feel regret

“Feel sorry, the kingdom of God is near”?
English word repent means sorry

Oxford Dictionary, repentance
  • from French word, repentir – to feel regret for sins or crimes
  • from Latin word, penitire – to regret
Matthew 4:17
  • “Change your life” – The message
  • “Change your hearts and lives” – New Century Version
  • “Turn away from your sins” – Good News Translation
  • “Turn from your sins and turn to God” – New Living Translation
  • “Reform…” – Young’s Literal Translation

2009-10-26 - Repentance - What It Is (part 3)
Dictionaries of Biblical Greek - Repentance
  • a complete change of attitude, spiritual and moral, toward God
  • a change of mind
  • to change one’s way of life
  • to change one’s mind or purpose

Questions:
  • How did both John and Jesus begin their public ministry of preaching?
  • What does the prefix meta- (from metanoia) mean? What other English words do you know that have meta- as a prefix?
  • What does the root nous (from metanoia) mean? What other English words do you know that contain –noia?
  • Have you ever considered your worldview? How has the Bible shaped it?
  • Why is metanoia necessary for us to grasp the kingdom of God?
  • How has the Latin idea of paenitentia influenced your understanding of repentance?
  • Why is the author concerned with “repentance” as our English translation for metanoia?

2009-10-28 - Repentance - Illustrations (part 2)
Paradigm Shift
  • Paradigm - describes the way that scientists work within a model for making sense of the world through observed data
  • Shift/meta – changing one’s thoughts of the world
  • Since paradigm shifts represents drastic changes to the rules of game – it is rarely done by scientists

Solar system

  • Man/earth was the center of the universe.
  • As we found for planets, it was more complex to think the earth was the center
  • Copernicus (1530) put the sun in the center – leading astronomers rejected the new paradigm

2009-10-29 - Repentance - Illustrations (part 3)
Like all paradigms, everything depends what you put in the center
We put us in the center, it is impossible to satisfy a self-centered man
In order to shift our paradigm to the truth:
  1. Must admit to being sinful
  2. Must admit to being selfish
  3. Must admit to being wrong
Repentance is a cosmic shift from a self-centered to a Christ-centered life

Questions:
  1. How does Scrooge illustrate metanoia?
  2. Have you ever experienced a gestalt switch while studying in school? How would your life change if you experienced this phenomenon in a way that helped you better understand your relationship with God?
  3. What are the rules by which you play the “game of life” within an egocentric paradigm …and a deocentric paradigm?
  4. How does changing the rules of a game change the strategy by which you play the game? What can learn from applying that principle to your life with God?

2009-11-03 - Repentance - Jesus Opens Our Eyes (part 1)
No one comes to Jesus without a preconceived paradigm about God
Our only hope for overcoming our blindness is repentance – only way to see the kingdom

Cursed Be The Pride that Blinds
  • We can not change what we can not see
  • When was the last time you said the words, “I am wrong”?
  • Ask someone close, “Am I blinded in any way by pride?”
  • It was through pride, that the devil became the devil
  • It is the complete anti-God state of mind.
  • Why is Jesus so tough on Spiritual Blindness? It prevents us from seeing the good news.
The Kingdom of God is Real
  • Survey of modern sermons would be salvation
  • Jesus’ preaching was about the kingdom of God

2009-11-05 - Repentance - Jesus Opens Our Eyes (part 3)
The Purpose of Parables
  • Parables offers an opportunity to slip a message past the defenses and filters
  • Kingdom parables
    • Parable of the Sower
      • watch out for Satan, he will try to rob you of the true and understanding of the kingdom
      • church needs to honest with how worldly cares (wealth, etc)
    • Parable of the Weeds
  • Repentance parables
    • Parable of the Lost Sheep
    • Parable of the Lost Coin
    • Prodical Son
      • Vivid picture of meanoia (when he came to his senses)
      • Data did not change, his thinking did
      • Younger son objectivity saw where he was with his father
      • Reoriented heart returns a reoriented life
      • Proves his repentance by his deeds

2009-11-18 - Repentance - The Church Reorients Us (part 2)
Bible says if your brother sins again you – go and point out his sin
Must repentance as a whole
Church repentance – 41 times
Individual repentance – 11 times

Not usual in the world
Football team at half-time
Company changes due to market conditions

All churches sin; not all repent
Some spin their shortcoming, craft reasonable explanations, minimize damage to reputation, issue statements

Questions
  1. How does the church represent the “destination of repentance”?
  2. How did the early church help sinners to repent? How did it safeguard true repentance from compromise?
  3. How did the walls of the early church stand steadfast against the assaults of the world?
  4. What does it mean to be of “one mind” with your brothers and sisters?
  5. How were early Christians both non-conformists and conformists?
  6. Why has church discipline gotten a “bad rap”? Is it warranted?
  7. Why do so few churches practice the Biblical mandates to discipline its members?
  8. How can a church best practice church discipline?
  9. Have you ever been disciplined by your church? Did God’s plan lead you to repentance – why or why not?
  10. Over 85% of the Biblical references to repentance address groups rather than individuals. Thus, how can you help your fellowship - at various levels – repent?
  11. How can you spark repentance – even revival – in your church and in your community? Are you willing to walk its path of selfless commitment?

2009-11-20 - Repentance - Its Time To Go Home (part 2)
Where are you on this path?

Are you part of “all people, everywhere”?
Good, you quality for the command to repent – Acts 17:26-27; 30-31

Ignorance of Jesus perpetuates a self-focused paradigm
Jesus is Lord – changes our heart, mind-set, allegiances, purpose, and agenda

Subsequent repentance has lesser fan fare (like 2nd to the moon or Mt. Everest

Satan doesn’t want you to know that he created your dilemma
His scheme:
  1. Try this
  2. You are damaged goods
  3. Doing it again will not make you more unclean
  4. They don’t/won’t understand
  5. Never tell them about this

Shame is the greatest obstacle to post-baptismal repentance
How to escape? You already have – Trust god’s grace
Light is not a place of condemnation

2009-11-21 - Repentance - Its Time To Go Home (part 3)
There is no perfect repentance, but wholehearted repentance
David – search me (Psalms 139)

Spirit’s conviction
Good – overcome blinding pride
Bad – Satan will try to stop you

Sometimes easier to see our sin than think about loved ones salvation (passed away)
What would they want you to do?

Questions
  1. How can you make the same journey as David – from repulsive to repentant?
  2. How does repentance differ between the lost turning to God and the saved re-turning to Him? How is it the same?
  3. How do qualify for God’s love and grace (see page 201)?
  4. If you have not yet repented, why are you without excuse before God?
  5. What will specifically change in your life when you proclaim, “Jesus is Lord!”?
  6. If you have repented, have you also been forgiven of your sins – if not, what are you waiting for (see Acts 22:16)?
  7. What can make post-baptismal repentance more difficult than your initial repentance?
  8. What role does shame play in obstructing your repentance?
  9. What is fellowship in the light vs. fellowship in the darkness? Which have you most often experienced in your church?
  10. Finally, to the “confused”: take time to consider and answer the questions on pages 207 and 208. How can you thwart Satan’s attempts to undermine your path to true repentance?
  11. Who can you encourage today with the good news of your repentance?
  12. Who can you reach for Jesus by “telling how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you” (Mark 5: 19)?

2009-11-24 - Master Plan - Selection (part 3)
Few were converted in His lifetime.
  • Little more than 500 after the resurrection - 1 Corinthians 15:6
  • 120 received baptism at the day of Pentecost - Acts 1:15
Strategy
  • Why not an army?
  • He needed leaders to lead the ministry after He left. Not all followers. It takes energy to produce a leader.
  • Not trying to impress the crowd but the usher in a Kingdom
  • Mass are like helpless sheep wandering aimlessly without a shepherds
  • Masses willing to follow anyone that came along with some promise for their welfare
  • Jesus was a realist. He knew he could not meet all the needs on His own.
Some concern themselves with baptisms and numbers more than power and love of God
Everything that is done with the few is for the salvation of the multitudes.

Modern Practicals
  • We are not even keeping with the growing population
  • We in an age where more rapid communication is now being seen than ever before
  • Must not be frantic to try to change the pattern overnight
  • Do like Jesus – start with a few lowly disciples and do as it was done by Jesus
    • Slow, tedious, painful, and probably unnoticed at first
    • Not spiritual “junk-food” revivals
  • Which generation are you living for?

2009-12-29 - First the Kingdom - Growing Meekness
Cultivating meekness is not some thing you do but a character change

Gentleness is a quality of meekness - Galatians 5:22

Meekness follows poverty of spirit and godly sorrow - there are no shortcuts

To stay meek you must confront sin and work through it

  1. Study the nature of God to develop more reverence before him'
  2. Study biblical passages on meekness
  3. Ask your closest relationships to help evaluate your humility
  4. Pray about what you see in the Bible about meekness
Do you want to be known as the meekest man?

Jesus was convicted about meekness

2010-01-19 - Kingdom First - Handle Prayerfully (part 1)
Jesus was a man of prayer - he knew how to do it and he did it all the time
  • Prayed for the power to heal and to change others - Mark 9:29
  • In prayer in order to be at peace with God's will - Matthew 26:36-46
  • Struggled in prayer to be wholehearted submissive to his Father - Hebrews 5:7-8
  • Prayed by himself - Matthew 14:23
  • Prayed before others - John 11:41-43
  • Prayed with his face to the ground - Matthew 26:39
  • Prayed looking up to heaven - John 17:1
  • Prayed standing up - Mark 11:25
  • Prayed kneeling down - Luke 22:41
  • Prayed in early in the morning - Mark 1:35
  • Prayed throughout the night - Luke 6:12
He did NOT say:
  • If you pray
  • Please, I beg you to pray
  • I command you to pray
But "When you pray..."

2010-01-27 - Kingdom First - Personal Responsibility (part 1)
Things have not changed much since the begging of time
The woman you put here gave me some fruit - Genesis 3:12

We crave a scape goat:
  • Children blame parents
  • Spouses blame each other
  • Employees blame employers
  • Society blame political administration
  • Present political administration blame previous one
Jesus calls us to personal responsibility - Matthew 7:1-5
Must confront the planks in our own lives

Instead should admonish one another - Colossians 1:28-29
Build each other up through contructive challenges - Ephesians 4:29

2010-01-29 - Kingdom First - So Much More
God wants to bless us - Matthew 7:7-11

NOT: Why are things so bad? OR Why me?

We need to ask God to help us answer the right questions:
  • What can I learn from this problem?
  • What is your will for my life?
  • What can I change that will make his/her life and our marriage better?
We need to ask
Why don't we ask God?
  • We think we are not worthy
  • Our faith is weak
  • We don't know what we want - we need to dream
vs9 - Jesus is referring to our needs

Has God given you "bread" only to have you call it a "stone"?

2010-03-21 - To Live is Christ - Joy and Crown
Paul: My joy and crown is you standing firm in the Lord - Philippians 4:1
For the Greeks, the crown was a symbol of victory or a token of honor

Paul's crown was changed lives
The legacy was lasting and the reward was eternal
Paul to Corinthians: Result of the ministry not written on tablets but on human hearts - 2 Corinthians 3:2-3

If other people's spiritual growth is not our concern, it will never be our joy
If others are not our joy in this life, they will never be our crown after this life

What brought Jesus joy, brought Paul joy
Where do we get our joy in life?

Self-centeredness is the greatest roadblock of joy
We can not be concerned about the things of God if our own things get in the way

The Philippians were Paul's concern,  his focus, his joy and his crown

2010-03-24 - To Live is Christ - Mind Change
Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable - think of such things - Philippians 4:8-9

It is all about the focus
Focus on the mess or you can change your mind and focus on:
  • Who God is
  • What God can do
  • The changes he can make
  • The victory he will most certainly achieve
Paul is not hopeful on what direction the world is going
Jesus saw the increase in wickedness - Matthew 24:12
While pessimistic about the world's chances, he was totally optimistic about the future with God

You will have trouble in this world but Jesus has overcome the world - John 16:33

2010-03-31 - Life to the Full - Crown not Frown (part 5)
In the spirit of James 1:27 and the heart of helping others, here are some ideas on helping others:
  • Pray about adopting a child
  • Visit a nursing home
  • When the homeless ask for spare change, do not be stingy, give to them - Luke 6:30-38
  • On your next vacation, go to a 3rd world country
  • See what you can sell to help the poor - Luke 12:33
  • Get to know a homeless person and have them into your home - Matthew 25:35
  • Read the news - follow up with the victims of accidents, fires, robberies

2010-04-10 - Life to the Full - Two Wisdoms (part 4)
There are two sorts of wisdom: earthly and heavenly

Do you have God's wisdom? - James 3:17-18
  • pure - not mixed with anything else - in thought, word or deed?
  • peace-loving - never to be soft on sin and not follow ways of violence
  • considerate - do we really put others first?
  • submissive - "obedient, compliant", open to persuasion
  • full of mercy and good - God is looking for changes and results
  • impartial - not taking the side of the unjust
  • sincere - "unhypocritical"
Wisdom in the Bible is more about moral quality than intellectual quality
Is why the wise may turn out to be fools and the "foolish" may the wisest of all

2010-04-24 - Life to the Full - In His Steps (part 5)
According to Peter, evangelism must be:
  • Christ-centered - we preach Jesus Christ as Lord - 2 Corinthians 4:5
  • Well-prepared - must know what we are talking about - 2 Timothy 2:15
  • Be yourself / Be real - eloquence is not a requirement - 1 Corinthians 2:12
  • Be gentle and respectful - No place for self-righteousness
  • Non-retaliating - We will be opposed; If we retaliate, we lose; Turn the other cheek - Matthew 5:39
  • Unhypocritical - People will be eager to change when they see the good news supported by your life

    • Opened himself up to anything, Not "I'm sorry, won't do that again"
  • Paul was religious all this life and had the heart to immediately obey and be baptized - v16
    • Perhaps, God uses the life of Paul to prepare our hearts for surrender

We/your friend would like to share "the whole will of God".

  • Today:
    • God is the same.
    • People change.

John 6:60-71

  • Jesus' message offended people
  • They my have said:
    • You are going to lose some members

    • This might start a controversy

Matthew 10:34-38

  • The message is going to cause friction
Matthew 7:13-14
  • The road is narrow:
    • Hard to get on
    • Not easy
    • Few will be on it
  • Are you on the narrow road?

2010-06-22 - Amazing Grace - how fearful the sound
Preached on 2003-11-13

There is nothing we can do or not do to change it

Psalms 103:8 - Grace is not a new concept for God

Luke 9:51-56 - the disciples struggled with grace

What fears do we have about grace?

1. Grace - produces lazy Christians

We cannot control the freedom of others
Acts 4:33 - much grace given and produced committed disciples

2. Grace - produces sinful Christians

Grace exposes our hearts and gives us the responsibility to respond

Romans 5:15-19
- Regulations is not grace
- Grace is a mature concept

What has grace produced in you?

3. Grace - produces weak convictions

John 6:28-29
- Must believe
- Belief is a work you must do

Luke 13:2-9
- Repent or perish
- Level of repentance and faith may be different for each person but baptism is the same for all.

2010-06-23 - God does not change (part 1)

  • God allowed Joesph brother's to throw him into slavery for me
  • God is all about change because he wants us to have have faith

God will never change

2010-08-08 - Waking Dead - At War (part 3)
Until we come to terms with war, we will not understand life
We will misinterpret most of what is happening around us:
  • Difficult to believe God's intentions are eternal life
  • Hard to not feel that we are blowing it
  • We will accept some awful things as God's will
  • God is ignoring our problem or just does not care
Most people get stuck at some point because God appears to have abandoned them
We have to realize we are part of a story and the situation we are in right now will change

We won't understand our life until we see it as a battle - warring against your heart

The issue is: we can not see things as clearly as we ought to - but we need to
The attack on our hearts weighs down our lives and glory is being held back
We don't see clearly because we don't see with the eyes of our heart

2010-08-12 - Waking Dead - Myths (part 3)

Myth tell us three truths, this third one is:

3. In this desparate hour, we have a crucial role to play

Neo sees himself as Thomas Anderson, but he was the one
Dorthy see herself as just a farm girl from Kansas but Joan of Arc was also on the farm but saw much more

People in the scriptures that saw this:

  • Little boy slays the gaint
  • Loudmouthed fisherman who can not keep a job to lead the church
  • Sinful woman with a golden heart became a example of humility to the Pharisees

This eternal truth is the most difficult for us to believe
Our days are extraordinary but most don't see it this way
It is the 'veil of familarity' - you are not what you think you are

There is a glory to your life that your enemy fears

The one who knows what you could be, fears it
The whole world lies under the power of the evil one - 1 John 5:19

Things happen to you and we question why
There is a bigger story going on

If believe we have a crucial role to play and come to know it is true, everything would change

2010-08-19 - Waking Dead - Restored
The deepest and most wonderful of all mythic truths reveiled in the Beauty and the Beast
The transformation: a creature that no one could bear the sight of is transformed into a handsome prince
  • Cinderella rises from from supression to become queen
  • The ugly duckling becomes a beautiful swan
  • Pinocchio becomes a real boy
  • Frog becomes a prince
  • Scrooge becomes a good friend to all
  • Cowardly lion, Scarecrow, Tinman all get what they are missing
They all transformed into the very thing they never thought they could be

It is the secret of Christianity
You must be born again - John 3:7

Not about keeping laws or rules
Counts whether we have really have been changed into new and different people - Galatians 6:15

Is this not the message of the gospel?
  • Zacchaeus the trickster becomes Zaccheaus the honest
  • Mary the sinful becomes Mary the faithful
  • Paul the self-righteous murder becomes Paul the humble apostle

2010-09-16 - Why can't we be friends?
Preached on 2003-01-26

Conflicts -Who are having problems? 1 John 4:20

- To love God, is to love our brothers

Three reason why we can not

1. Lack of spiritually (half-hearted)

Genesis 4:1
- God wants us to give your best
- First reaction: Anger and downcast
- Relationships - best to God, best to others

How could being close to God change things for you?

2. Selfish

Jacob and Esua

Genesis 25:27-35
- Only do things you like to do
- Waiting for them to come to you
- You make the first moved

3. Jealous/Anger

Genesis 37:1

- How is jealousy effecting you relationship?
- Focus on all the blessing you DO have
- Pray for them

2010-09-29 - Contagious Christian - People Matter (part 1)
We might like the idea of having a spiritual impact on others, we won't take decisive action unless we raise our motivation level
The best way to do this is to have God's perspective on the matter

1. The way things are - Science
Anthropic principle - when we look at the world around us, the universe was somehow designed to support and nourish human life
  • Raise or lower the universe's rate of expansion by one part in a million, - it rules out the possibility of life
  • If the average distance between star was any greater, the planets would not have formed; any smaller, the planets orbits for life would not have occurred
  • The ratio of carbon and oxygen was different, we could not breath the air
  • Change the tilt of the earth's axis slightly, we would freeze and burn up
  • Any change in the distance from the sun or speed of rotation of the earth would result in unlivable temperature changes
Someone must have gone to a lot of effort to make things just right
We matter to God

2. The way things ought to be - Business
Business is turning to the "upside-down" approached
They refocus on they are there - to server their customers

Focus must be outside the church as well
It is easy to get entangled and ensnared in internal issues in our church that it is hard to remember the primary reason we remain on this planet - to reach out to other people

If we matter to God, then they'd better matter to us too

2010-10-21 - Dealing With Debt (Part II)
  1. Why Get Out of Debt?
    1. It hinders us from being able to give generously. When we are paying 18%+ interest on top of the principal, it is difficult to have anything left to share with others.
    2. It is wasteful. The exorbitant interest we pay on our credit cards is totally wasted.
    3. The balance is probably there because you were not following God's plan for your finances.
  2. How to Get Out
    1. You must be radical (Matthew 5:29-30)
      1. Cut up all your credit cards (if you have outstanding balances that you have not been able to pay off for 3 months or more).
      2. Call your credit card companies and cancel the accounts.
      3. Work out your budget with the goal of removing your debt. Do not buy anything that is not necessary. Cut all unnecessary expenditures out of your budget (e.g. cable TV, newspaper).
      4. Get input (Proverbs 15:22)
      5. Commit your plan to the Lord (Psalms 127:1-2)
    2. Finish the job (Luke 14:28-30)
      1. Let godly sorrow lead you to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10-11). You must take responsibility for your debt.

QUESTIONS

  1. Am I in sinful/foolish debt? If so, why?
  2. Am I willing to apply the principles set forth to get out of debt?
  3. What will be the hardest thing for me to change to get out of debt?
  4. Who do I know that will be able to help me with my plan?

2010-11-02 - Contagious Christian - Throwing a Matthew Party

Throwing your own Matthew party fulfills a modest purposes

  • To provide a neutral setting where Christians can make a low-key contact with irreligious people
  • To strengthening existing relationships as well as cultivating new ones
  • To plant some spiritual seeds and strike up conversations about matters of faith

Good examples of Matthew parties:

  • Holiday parties
  • Events for kids on the block
  • Summer BBQs

Another misconception is that we have add a lot of new activities to our schedules

Examples of everyday activities to get people involved in:

  • Sharing a meal
  • Watching a game
  • Sporting activities
  • Babysitting and work exchanges

2010-11-03 - Contagious Christian - Finding the Approach
Besides talking to people you are ready know try contacting people you used to know
The curiosity factor comes into play
  • Because you contacted them out of blue
  • Both of you want to see all the changes that have happened since you last saw them
Call them out of curiosity and call them into fun
In the process, prayerfully watch for opportunities to share the way God has changed your life

There are also many opportunities where there people you would like to know
We all go to gas stations, stores, restaurants
With a little forethought, these errands can be turned into evangelistic opportunities
Change your thinking about the way you look at the employee who are serving you
These are people who matter to God and put in your path for you to meet
When we approach people with this attitude, with concern and respect - it is easy to get on a first name basis with them

2010-11-06 - Contagious Christian - The Blind Man's Testimonial Approach
Blinded since birth, Jesus change his life by giving him sight
The first time he came in contact with an audience after his sight he was asked to explain what happen
The crowd was hostile but he refused to enter into a theological debate - John 9:25
"One thing I do know, I was blind but now I see"

He was born blind so that the work of God might be displayed in his life
God had been preparing this man to tell the story of his life and to point people to Jesus

Some people might not respond to a challenge or a debate but a personal account of someone's coming to faith can move them powerfully

Effective testimonies don't have to be dramatic
For some it would be difficult to relate to a dramatic testimony that may give them an excuse
Might say "People like that, need religion"

If you have a more dramatic story, ask God to lead you concerning how much detail and whom to tell it

2010-11-07 - Hunger for Christ
Preached by Mike Gross

Nearly 1 Billion people in the world do not get enough food
25,000 die every day because of starvation

Are you hungry?

John 6:22-28
  • Just witnessed 5,000 people being feed
  • They were looking for free food but in reality they had to work at it find it
  • The bread they needed was to spend time to know about Jesus - the bread of life
  • Are you searching for the right kind of bread?
  • The search and hunger for God does not end when we are baptized, it only begins
Proverbs 2:1-5
  • We need to find God like hidden treasure
  • God does not change but our viewpoint changes
  • Example - Engagement ring to a couple verse the a jewelery store owner
Food Poising

Mark 4:18-19
  • Money, worries, wasted time choke out our hunger for him
  • During the holidays this becomes a bigger issue
Hunger for the bread of life

John 6:28-40
  • They asked for a miracle but they had already forgotten about the miracle they just saw - feeding the 5,000
  • The work is to believe - it takes work to believe
  • NOT working to get salvation but we need to work at our salvation

2010-11-16 - Contagious Christian - Making the Message Clear (part I)
Before you can bring the message to others, need to make sure we clearly understand we understand the message ourselves
Making the message clear will need us to be able to illustrate it for those we talk to

God
Three aspects of God we need to look at:
  1. God is loving - Out of compassion He made us and still desires to have a relationship despite our sin against him
  2. God is holy - He is absolutely pure and is separate from everything impure
  3. God is just - He is a perfect judge who will dispense justice to everyone fairly
Us
God made us without sin but we abused our freedom and became evil
Sin requires God to pronounce upon us the death penalty - both physical and spiritual
This is separation from God via hell
We are helpless to change this

Christ
God had the power and authority to devise a plan for our salvation
Christ died and suffered the death penalty debt for us and
  • Expressed the love of God
  • Upheld the holiness of God
  • Satisfied the justice of God
He offered us His forgiveness and friendship
You don't deserve it, we didn't pay for it, we can not earn it

He paid a debt He did not owe
I owned a debt I could not pay

2010-11-22 - Mission - Heart of Christ
Reading Luke 19:1-9
  • Should be titled "Jesus, the seeker of Zacchaeus"
  • Introduction starts with Jesus calling out Zachhaeus
  • How did he know him? Jesus was present when God gave him life - John 1:3
  • The crowd was less than delighted
    • They enjoyed the fruit of Jesus' miracles
    • Failed to grasp his love
His outreach to sinners shocked people while destroying the false security of following laws and regulations
Jesus' love had a clear and defined purpose - to restore a broken relationship between the lost and God

To have the heart of Christ means to seek and to save what is lost

It is beyond:
  • Enjoying the fellowship
  • Benefiting from counseling
  • Learning how to change bad habits
Seeking these blessings first simply puts one at the same level as the Pharisees

2010-11-28 - Mission - Baptizing Them
Heaven is a place of continual celebration

God original place for us was to with him in a state of perfection
  • He created us in his own image - Genesis 1:27
  • Satan with sin, drove a wedge between us and God
  • Sin destroyed our relationship with God and one another - Isaiah 59:1-2
  • He grieved that he had made man - Genesis 6:6

God had a radical plan to bring back into a relationship with him and to destroy the power that Satan had over us

To this point, most Bible-believing world would agree

What about baptism?
Marginal matters are not in the Great Commission
Paul included in his list of "seven ones" - Ephesians 4:4-6
We are united in baptism with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus - Romans 6

The master deceiver and father of lies has changed the road signs and send many to spiritual dead ends

2010-11-29 - Trusting God - Samuel
Preached by Rob Milner

Read 1 Samuel 13

Following God's instruction is the key to our success

1 Samuel 10:8 - Go to Gilgal and wait for 7 days and then we will sacrifice
Samuel was the judge before their were kings

Saul waited for 7 days but did not wait to do the burnt offerings
He did not follow God's instructions exactly
How long before we stop waiting?

Ever wanted to take matters into our own hands?
There is nothing as good as trusting and then God fulfilling his promise

There are two battles:
  • Battle between good and evil
  • Battle between faith and action
James 2:18-24
  • v22 - Faith and works - work together
  • Faith without deeds is dead
  • Where am I not following exactly?
  • What am I not submitting to God's will?

James 4:7-8 - God calls us to submit to him fully

Trust in God and not your situation

1 Samuel 13:11-12 - Saul doubted that Samuel was coming

James 1:5-8 - we should believe and not doubt

Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in God and not on one's own understanding
Depending on one's own understanding creates:

  • Pride
  • Controlling person
  • Self-reliant
  • Unreliable - allows our situations to change us
  • Lose of conviction
Psalms 118:8 - Better to rely on God than man

Protect your blacksmiths or you will be found defenseless

1 Samuel 13:19-21
What are the blacksmiths of our lives?
  • Knowledge of the Bible
  • Daily prayer/walk with God
  • Brotherly fellowship

2010-11-30 - Mission - Repentance
Both Luke 24 and 2 - message of repentance and forgiveness is mentioned in the light of the death and resurrection of Jesus

The message to Preach

1. Repentance

God wants the cross to reveal how disgraceful and disgusting sin is
To motivate us to radical and rapid change
Is there an example of repentance in the Bible that is not radical and rapid?
Repentance is the first and foremost call to change to change our mind (metanoia)

Paul preached they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance with their deeds - Acts 26:20
You can only change your action for a period of time without ever really changing your mind
Change your mind, you will change your action rapidly and radically

Baptism happened rapidly and radically because his heart was ready to change - Acts 8
Would we have have baptized the Ethiopian the same day?
What did Philip see? Unmistakable signs of godly sorrow
As soon as someone has repented, he is ready for baptism

2010-12-02 - Mission - Taking Up the Cross
Two questions to ask ourselves:
Is the power of the cross producing real changes in my life?
Are lost souls being radically converted as I preach?

The message of the cross will seem foolish to those we are teaching if they do not see the daily demonstration of its power for us who are being saved

Christians described in Romans 6
  • v4 - new life
  • v7 - freed from sin
  • v11 - dead to sin but alive in Christ
Taking up our cross must be each and every day
Our days are composed of countless choices and decisions
Each step that Jesus took towards the cross he took willingly

It takes 1000s of bricks to build a house, it takes 1000s of righteous choices to build a Christ-like character
Our hearts - lost world needs to know how we feel towards our Father
Our conversation - we should never get tired of telling our conversation story
Our example - Our daily temptations and victories should be only shared

2010-12-05 - Mission - Peter, To a Rock
Peter's talk with Jesus by the coals burned an incredible mark in the heart of Peter - John 21:9

At Pentecost, Peter is recorded by Luke to have
  • Heroic acts of wisdom - Acts 2:14
  • Boldness and courage
  • Healings - Acts 5:15-16
Peter had profoundly changed but sometimes rocks have rough edges
Paul was very angry with on an occasion - Galatians 2:11
But Peter grew to become a stronger disciple

While the world stagnates in, the Christian list is an exciting adventure in change

Peter was not only a hero because he changed but because he also persevered

2010-12-06 - Mission - John's Walk with Jesus
What disciples does not like the apostle John, the "apostle of love"?

Not everyone
  • Some apostles did not like his selfish ambition - Matthew 20:24
  • Some thought he was prideful describing himself as the beloved disciple of Jesus - John 21:7
  • After the resurrection, Peter still seems to have attitudes towards John - John 21:21
New John after walking with Jesus for a while - Mark 1:19

John stayed close to Jesus - Luke 9:28
He would never quit Jesus - Mark 14:32-34
John loved Jesus until the end - John 19:25-27

John changed:
  • Selfish ambition turned to kingdom ambition
  • Fits of rage changed to fits of love
  • Factiousness come together into a passion of unity
Only after walking with Jesus did John become the apostle of love, he wasn't that way naturally

How is our walk with Jesus?
Do we focus our energy on our walk with Jesus?

Only after walking with Jesus, can we change into the disciple Jesus' wants us to be

2010-12-10 - Mission - With You Always
One of the last things Jesus said to assure his disciples, I am with you always - Matthew 28:20

Same message given to those who were:
  • "Too young"
  • "Not good speakers"
  • "Claimed weakness"
  • "Claimed faithlessness"
God's response is always the same: I will be with you
  • Peter: Do I know enough?
  • John: Will I be loved?
Jesus is on the front lines of salvation - we need to be where He is
Do you want to share because you will asked about it or because He will be with you?
If we could truely grasp the significance of Jesus being with you - radically change the face of evangelism

We are commanded to preach whether we want to or not - 1 Corinthians 9:17

Jesus reminded Paul that He was with him and that is all Paul needed
When we find ourselves timid, we need to remind ourselves who is with us

2010-12-11 - Seeking God (part I)

What are you looking for in life?

Acts 17:16-28

  • Ever ask yourself: “What on earth am I here for?” You aren’t alone!
  • Why did God create you and bring you to this very point and time in your life? So that you would seek him and
find him in order to have a personal relationship with him.
  • Who takes the initiative in seeking this relationship? Because God loves us and desires a relationship with us, he has been actively determining times and places long before we ever thought about seeking him (Psalms 14:2-3).
  • Why do so few seem to be seeking today?
    • God is unknown and the image many have of him is distorted v23
    • We have created our own god. We all worship something.
    • To seek God, we must be willing to change our ideas about who God is to match what has been revealed to us in the Bible
  • There is nothing more important or exciting in life than to seek and to find our Creator God.

Jeremiah 29:11-14

  • We will find God if we seek Him with all our heart.
  • Have you ever done something with all your heart? What is it?
  • What will it mean for you to seek God with all your heart?

2010-12-27 - Repentance (part I)

Luke 13:1-5, 6-9

  • Jesus preaches that without repentance, we will all perish.
  • He likewise expects to find fruit every time there is true repentance.
  • The Greek word for repentance, metanoia, signifies a “turning,” a “change of heart and mind.”
  • When we discover we’ve been going the wrong way on a one-way street, we immediately turn around (repent) and go in the opposite
direction. In this case, we turn from a selfish life that has marginalized God to a life that makes God the center of our devotion, our faith, our obedience.

Luke 3:7-14

  • The tangible fruit of repentance is the evidence of a changed mindset.
  • John the Baptist insisted on repentance before baptism.
  • If you were to ask John, “What should I do?” how would he respond to you?

Acts 26:15-21

  • Jesus gives Paul the charge to “open their eyes” so that “they may turn” and prove their repentance by their deeds.
  • Repentance involves a new perspective, a turning of allegiance, and fruit.

Keep that in mind as we have this study about God's Word.

  • v4:4 - Bible says that people will start to listen to and follow man (ideas and myths) rather than God

  • Question: How can reading the Bible daily change your life? What happens if you don't read daily?
  • Question: Why do you think God wants you to read his word daily? So you can know him!
John 8:31-36
  • Jesus is talking to the Jewish people and tells them that is they don't hold to his teachings, then they are not really his disciples
  • Just because someone acts religious or know a lot about the Bible does not mean they are following Jesus
  • Question: What does Jesus say it takes to be his disciple? Then you'll know what? Then what?
  • When you read someone's journal you get to know that person more and more each day - same goes for reading God's word
  • Question: How often do you read the Bible?

John 12:44-50
  • Jesus is the ultimate reflection of God on earth
  • Just as Jesus didn't come with a critical judgment = God does not either
  • v46 - He shows us the way out of darkness - when we don't have a close relationship with him
