2010-11-09 - Contagious Christian - Samaritan Woman Invitational Approach
Samaritan woman was living an immoral lifestyle
Jesus ignored all conventional wisdom - John 4
It didn't take long to realize she wasn't talking to any ordinary teacher but the Messiah

She immediately went to town and brought people back to hear Jesus
Now we have seen and heard for ourselves and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world - John 4:42

Many would make great strides if they just make strategic inviting to a church service or event
Primary question you will need to answer is which event will be appropriate to bring them to

Invitation are great way for all of us but some just have the knack for getting people to go places with them

Many of these Christians tend to stay out of the limelight but they make a big impact to their world

2010-11-10 - Contagious Christian - Dorcas' Service Approach
Dorcas was "always doing good and helping the poor" - Acts 9:36
She well-known for her loving acts of service
She made robes and articles of clothing for widows and other needy people in her town

It was very difficult to see her activity without seeing the love of Christ that inspired
Her work was so important that when she died a premature death, God sent Peter to raise her from the dead

People who take on this approach find it relatively easy to servers others
Often those who are quite and enjoy expressing compassion through action

No one fits perfectly into just one approach and you probably use all of them one way or another
God has designed diversity on His team and each member is stronger in some styles than others

A team of Christians who are made up of different styles will strong because they can reach virtually every type of seeker

2010-11-20 - Contagious Christian - Breaking Barriers to Belief (part I)
We have got to help people understand that God is not angry or afraid of honest doubt
He warmly invites those with sincere questions to come, to seek, to knock - Matthew 7:7
How different Jesus is from the religious leaders of the world
Jesus told doubting Thomas to touch him - Luke 24:39

We should expect this to happen and respond by emulating Jesus
Clear communication starts with spiritual conversations

1. Poor Examples

This includes those who are religious and are prideful or hypocritical
Some are narrow-minded and pessimistic have condemned anything they don't happen to like

What can be done to remove this barrier?
  • Help them realize that you understand their hesitation
  • Live your life as a model that shatters their stereotypes
  • Help them to see the other authentic Christians so they know you are not the only one

2010-12-02 - Mission - Taking Up the Cross
Two questions to ask ourselves:
Is the power of the cross producing real changes in my life?
Are lost souls being radically converted as I preach?

The message of the cross will seem foolish to those we are teaching if they do not see the daily demonstration of its power for us who are being saved

Christians described in Romans 6
  • v4 - new life
  • v7 - freed from sin
  • v11 - dead to sin but alive in Christ
Taking up our cross must be each and every day
Our days are composed of countless choices and decisions
Each step that Jesus took towards the cross he took willingly

It takes 1000s of bricks to build a house, it takes 1000s of righteous choices to build a Christ-like character
Our hearts - lost world needs to know how we feel towards our Father
Our conversation - we should never get tired of telling our conversation story
Our example - Our daily temptations and victories should be only shared

2011-01-09 - Church (part III)

Hebrews 3:12-14

  • Christianity is a “one another” religion, not a solo endeavor.
  • We have the charge and the responsibility to be deeply involved in each other’s lives.
  • Daily encouragement helps everyone stand firm until the end. You may wish to refer to additional “one another” verses.

Hebrews 10:22-25

  • After being washed in baptism, we need the continual exhortations of brothers and sisters to stay the course.
  • Consider ahead of time how you can spur on fellow Christians in the fellowship.
  • Also prepare to receive biblical input that will result in greater love and good deeds.
  • Why is missing meetings of the body described as a bad habit? Why and when do we meet?

Mark 3:31-35 - What will it mean for you to be part of Jesus’ family?

2011-01-14 - Followup - Being Discipled: Initiation (part II)
  1. Initiate in friendship
  • Calls, cards, encouragement
  • Need to be giving
  • No “OK, here I am, now disciple me.”
  1. Initiate in evangelism
  • Bring people to older Christians to study with
  • This is how you’ll learn to be abundantly fruitful
  1. Initiate in thinking
  • Learn to be independent thinkers, not independent spirit
  • 1 Timothy 4:7 - Train yourself to be Godly

2011-02-08 - Fearing God - Glorious Truth (part I)
Christianity means a relationship with God
How can you have a relationship with someone you fear?

There was a time when committed Christians were known as God-fearing people
God delights in those who fear him
What is the fear of God?

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom - Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge - Proverbs 1:7

Wisdom and knowledge are not the same
Knowledge is the accumulation of information

Two people can have the same knowledge and but do different times with them
  • Doctor that performs abortions
  • Doctor that helps saves babies
Knowledge can puff up - 1 Corinthians 8:1

Knowledge can lead to righteousness - Titus 1:1

2011-05-04 - Names of the Believers (part IV)
Names given to the believers in the Bible
  • Chosen generation - 1 Peter 2:9
  • Chosen ones - 1 Chronicles 16:13
  • Chosen vessels - Acts 9:15
  • Christians - Acts 11:26; 26:28
  • Dear children - Ephesians 5:1
  • Disciples of Christ - John 8:31; 15:8

2011-05-26 - Fearing God - Slave or Son
Two types of fear:
  • Servile fear - latin meaning slave
  • Filial fear - meaning son
Servile fear is illustrated by the third servant in Christ's parable of the talents
He went out and hid his talent in the ground - Matthew 25:24-25
The devil is the author of servile fear - he uses it to haunt and disturb Christians to make our lives uncomfortable

Filial fear is loving fear of a child toward his father
A mixture of reference, pleasure, joy, and awe which fills our hearts when we realize who God is and what He has done for us

There are 150 references to the fear of God, most in the Old Testament
Ones in the New Testament convince us that fearing God is an attitude of the heart

2011-09-12 - Followup: Purity (part I)
Our society exalts sexual immorality, and it’s raging out of control. Teenagers have hormones that are newly active and they can let them rage out of control. Singles are looking for love in all the wrong places. Marriages are ending in divorce more now than ever before even though more people claim to be Christians. God has made it clear that he wants us all to let the natural sexual desires remain dormant until they can be expressed within the marriage relationship.

In the Bible the term “purity” is most often referring to sexual purity, but it also is used to refer to being free from contamination by worldliness in general. Contaminated water is undrinkable, just as a contaminated heart is unacceptable to God.

Question: Have you ever had food poisoning? What happens?
  • Since the food is contaminated and poisonous, the body does everything possible to flush the poison out. If the poison is not removed the person could die
  • Being contaminated and poisoned by the world will damage your soul.
Question: How do you define impurity?
  • Impurity is not just physically but it can also be emotionally.
  • Often Satan tries to create an emotional connection in order to slowly pull you away from God’s standard.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-8
  • What does the Bible call for us to do in order to stay pure?
  • When are you most tempted to be impure?
  • Is there anyone that Satan is trying to use to lead you into impurity (physically or emotionally)?

2011-11-10 - Mind Change - Trouble
Trouble is often the ground where God cultivates some of his best crops.

No trouble is bigger than God.
No trouble is stronger than God.
No trouble overwhelms God.

Genesis 50:20 - God trouble helps save lives
Galatians 4:13 - Because of an illness that Paul preached to the Galatians
Philippians 1:12-14 - Christians were encouraged by Paul's chains

2011-12-03 - Guarding Your Heart (part II)
Being open and vulnerable will help keep your heart healthy
  • Proverbs 28:13 - You will always prosper and find mercy from God and other people
  • Hebrews 3:13 - Talk with others daily to receive the encouragement needed
  • James 5:16 - Healing will come to your heart when you confess to others
Develop a “play-it-safe” mentality with your heart
  • Deuteronomy 11:16 - Satan will always be trying to entice you to return to your life of sin
  • Psalms 101:2 - Be careful every day and in every situation
  • 1 Corinthians 10:6-12 - Don’t be over-confident; even the greatest have fallen
  • Ephesians 5:15-17 - Don’t be careless with your life; take the time to think about all you do
  • Hebrews 2:1 - Lack of Being careful will cause you to drift from God
Your salvation is a priceless gift and your most important possession. Guard it with great care and do whatever you can to keep the number one killer of Christians out of your life - sin!! Satan will work to steal you away from God but God has given you the information and the power to overcome all of his efforts. (Ephesians 6:10-18) Heaven is too great a reward to not do all you can to guard your salvation.

2012-01-22 - Ministry - With Jesus, You Will Not Stand Alone
John 8: 1-11

Compromising circumstances were not sufficient evidence, as the Jewish law required witnesses who had seen the act. Imagine what this woman felt in the midst of an angry crowd eager to trap Jesus, she was caught in the act of adultery! She was humiliated and alone. The incident was staged to trap Jesus since the Romans did not allow the Jews to carry out death sentences. So if Jesus had said to stone her, he could have been in conflict with the Romans. If he had said no to stone her, he could have been accused of not being supportive of the law.

So Jesus started to write on the ground, we could only imagine what he wrote, it could have been the list of sins. Then without disagreeing with the law he gave them a qualification to cast the first stone, it was whoever was without sin instead of whoever is without the sin of adultery. As Christians, even though we know that God sees all sins the same, we categorize sin and fall in to Satan's trap of self-righteousness. We forget that deceit, bitterness, envy and anger are just as bad as sexual immorality or murder.

Jesus showed the woman compassion, mercy and also commanded her to leave her life of sin. We can only imagine the woman's sense of relief and gratitude. Her life will never be the same again. At the worst point of your life Jesus stood up for you, instead of letting you be condemned.

Questions:
  • What are three areas of your life that you need to be shown compassion and mercy in?
  • Do you extend compassion and mercy to others who struggle in the same areas?

2012-01-30 - Ministry - Christianity or Christ?
John 6:25-40

Jesus explains to the hungry crowds that their minds should be set on spiritual fulfillment, not on physical fulfillment. The bread that they are looking for is not a loaf of bread or even the manna that Moses' generation ate. The bread they needed was the bread from heaven: the Son of God. Having a relationship with Jesus is what will satisfy. Believing in him is what will change our lives. It is not Christianity but Christ. We chase spiritual fads, deep, theological issues, when all the Jesus wants is for us to be deeply dependent on him. This requires a radical change in how we have learned to exist. Some of us get burned out being Christians because having faith in God is not our focus. We spend a lot of time trying to do things and not time having a real relationship with "Christ who is our life."

Questions/Followup:
  • What are some barriers to your faith in Christ?
  • What characteristics of Christ do you admire?
  • Pick one of those and focus on emulating it today in your own life.

2012-02-04 - Ministry - Pick Up Your Sword
Matthew 4:1-11

As Christians we constantly live under spiritual warfare. The battle between Satan and God constantly rages. In this passage we see just a glimpse of one skirmish. Satan attacks with his weapon-temptation, and Jesus responds with his skillfully sharpened sword: the Word of God. In this clash Jesus is able to defeat Satan first because he sees the battle, and second because of his passion to fight it with the scriptures.

Question: Do you see the battle? Do you know when you are being tempted, or do the devil's enticements escape you and you easily fall into sin?

In these scriptures Jesus teaches us how to fight back. (V.4) When daily temptation and sin come we have to have deep convictions that we need the Bible. (Satan's first temptation was doubt. "If you are the Son of God") Are you tempted to ignore your desperation for God? Are you desperate to be right with God? Are you tempted to skip your quiet times?

(V.6-7) Are you tempted to test God? Do you think, "If he doesn't answer this prayer, then I won't pray anymore," or "He didn't do that, so I am leaving." Does bitterness or persecution tempt you? Tempted to doubt the kingdom or the scriptures? Tempted to doubt the only church in the Bible, the salvation of family members, or tempted to ignore certain passages Cling to the truths in the scriptures, they are your most powerful weapons. (V. 8-10) Q: Are you tempted by the world? Tempted by their ease? Their power? Their leisure? Tempted to worship what they do-money, attention, praise, desire? (Ps 73)

Write down the temptations you are most susceptible to.

Find a scripture passage in your QT that will help you fight back.

2012-02-15 - Fear of Failure - That Our Faith Should Not Fail
by Rosalind Lam, San Francisco Church of Christ

Luke 22:31-62

Jesus recognized the spiritual battle both he and his disciples would undergo before his arrest and therefore prayed that Simon's faith would not fail him and that he would "repent and turn to [Jesus] again, strengthen and build up [his] brothers" (NLT). Peter was blinded by his pride and did not have a sober view of his own ability to resist temptation, even after Jesus warned him that he would deny him. Peter's overconfidence was evident when he chose to sleep instead of pray and Peter's reliance on his flesh led to him being overpowered by fear and failing to have conviction during the time of pressure. Though Peter got bitter at his failure initially, he did not let it destroy his faith but went on to do amazing things for God, including preaching the opening sermon for the church.

What I learn from this passage about my own failures as a Christian is that Satan's ultimate goal is that my faith will fail me. Jesus' prayer helped me to make a decision that as long as I fight hard in prayer to repent and turn back to God, use my failures to build the faith of other Christians, and never give up, I can always make a comeback as Peter did and see God use me to fulfill his dreams for my life.

Decisions:
  • Look at how God has overcome my shortcomings to help me grow.
  • Build trust in God today by sharing a victory with a friend.

2012-02-16 - Fear of Failure - God Will Give Us the Grace We Need to Succeed
by Sean Kiluk, San Francisco Church of Christ

2 Corinthians 9:8

God will give us all the grace we need to be successful in whatever role he has put us in. He did not put us where we are to fail, but to rely on him for success. Our problems come when we value success and praise more than knowing God. God forgives us, and he loves us even though we fail or sin. His love is unconditional. We need to have confidence in God's grace in everything. We will fail at times, but God has enough grace to ensure a victory in the end.

Decisions:
  • Pray for an understanding of God's forgiveness: study the psalms and see David's trust in God.
  • Believe that God has a plan for your life: be confident in his love.
  • Build great relationships with other Christians who can bolster your faith.

2015-05-11 - Shining Lamp

Full of the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God - Acts 7:55

Nothing prompts change likea man's courage in the face of potential personal loss. Stephen had that kind of courage.

Religous leaders hoped persecuting Christians would put a stop to this new religious movement, exactly the opposite happened

Stephen willingly died for what he believed in and he contributed greatly to the spread of the gospel message

At the scene of Stephen's murder stood a young Pharisee named Saul - the same Saul God miraculously converted

Stephen's courage and faith in the face of death apparently made a lasting impression

Pauls bold preaching would change the world forever - Acts 22:19-20

Lamps do not talk, but they do shine. Is your lamp shining today?

2015-06-05 - Believers is Jesus

Saul! Why are you persecuting me? - Acts 9:4

Why you bless the believers, you bless Jesus; When you persecute the believers, you persecute the Savior who calls them brothers - Matthew 12:49

Saul believed in his heart that he was doing God's work by shuting down a new religous movement

All that changed when he heard Jesus' voice tell me he was hurting

  • Jesus
  • Invdividual Christians
  • Christian community

When you felt tempted to speak harshly or say something hurtful, remember that Christ call his own brother

2015-07-25 - Forgive and Forget

Now it is time to forgive and comfort him - 2 Corinthians 2:7

Paul told the Corinthian Christians to forgive a man who had caused him and the church a lot of trouble

God's purpose for discipline is to forgive and restore, not to condemn and reject

Paul apparently shared these believers' sense of injury but he eagerly extended forgiveness and restoration to give the man some hope and encouragement

Who in your life needs that kind of forgiveness and encouragement?

2015-09-25 - Encouragement

Judas and Silas spoke at length to the believers, encouraging and strengthing their faith  - Acts 15:32

They were choosen to travel with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch

Judas and Silas were chosen to deliver a letter that communicated what the apostles had decided about what Jewish laws the Gentile Christians needed to observe

They did not just read the letter and head home - they took the time and went out of their way to speak words of encouragement and strength to the believers

You can bless others as you go out of your way to encourage them

2015-11-28 - More Than Changed

They did not believe he had truely become a believer - Acts 9:26

After his conversion, Saul endured skepticism from the early Christians

Saul's encounter with Jesus changed the direction of his life but some who hear his message could not believer their ears

Wasn't this the same Saul who violently persecuted Christians? Yes and No

Saul was transformed - Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person - 2 Corinthians 5:17

In an instant, Saul transformed from a hateful, enemy of Jesus to his most vocal follower

2015-12-01 - Willing to Confront

When Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face - Galatians 2:11

Uncorrected errors do multiply, you got to face them some day

Few of us enjoy confrontation:

  • Pointing out other's flaws
  • Having our flaws exposed

Spiritual health sometimes calls for loving confrontations

Petter had erred in refusing to dine with uncircumcised Gentiles Christians

Peter was clearly in the wrong and Paul confronted him directly

Paul modeled the importance of lving confrontation with regard to crucial issues of faith

If he let this error slide, bigger errors would soon bury the young church

2024-02-01 - Truth (part III)

Can truth be known?

Athiest may start with "I don't believe in God!"
Are you sure there is no God? If no, then may actually be agnostic
If you agnostic, then what kind?
    - Can't know anything for sure - how are you so sure about that?
    - Doesn't know anything for sure, but can know

Would you be willing to look at the evidence? Evidence can not convince the unwilling

Complete agnosticism is self-defeating  - "truth can not be known" and believe it to be true (a true claim)

Truth can be known? YES

Can all religions be true?
No, because some are contradictory:

  • World religions have more contradictions than similarities
  • While reglions have some similarities, because of God has planted on our hearts

Major differences:

  • Jews, Christians and Muslims believe in one God vs Hindus/New Age believe everything that exists is an impersonal force
  • Jews, Christians and Muslims believe in heaven and hell vs Hindus believe evil is an illusion
  • Christians believe you are saved by grace while all others believe in salvation by good works if they believe in salvation at all

"Tolerance" means that you are suppose to except all religions to be true

  1. Accept people with other beliefs and but not yourself
  2. "You ought not question someone religious beliefs" is a religious belief of pluralists
  3. Prohibition against questioning beliefs is an absolute moral stance
  4. Bible commands us to questions beliefs - pluralist should accept this believe
  5. They only tolerate of those who agree with them

You shall not judge - it is a judgment
All judge, it is about if we make the right judgment
Ready to accept child sacrifices or radical fundamental terrorists?
If in error, it is not loving to withhold truth from others

Elephant parable (world religions are objective vs objective) - may seem persuasive until you get to one question  - what the perceptive of the narrator, isn't it an objectiveone?
