2011-05-27 - Fearing God - Determines how we live (part I)

Fearing God is the most exalted endevors in our life

The highest reaches of becoming holy are realized only in the fear of God

Fearing God does not stop in the New Testament:

  • 1 Peter 2:17 - Fear God
  • Acts 9:31 - Live in the fear of the Lord
  • 2 Corinthians 7:1 - Cleanse ourselves in the fear of the God
  • Colossians 3:22 - Work should be done while fearing the Lord

The Spirit of God rested on the Messiah with the fear of the Lord and he delighted in it - Isaiah 11:1-3
If we would be like the Lord Jesus, we should delight in fearing the God

2011-06-02 - Excuses - Isaiah

Isaiah too went on to have a tremendous impact on his generation

2011-06-09 - Mind of Christ - Intro (part II)
Man’s heart must be reshaped to think and act like God’s (continued)
  1. Man does not by nature think like God
  • For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways - Isaiah 55:8-9
  • The heart is deceitful above all things - Jeremiah 17:9
  1. We must seek to obtain the mind of Christ
  • Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus - Philippians 2:5
  • But we have the mind of Christ - 1 Corinthians 2:16

2011-07-25 - Mind of Christ - Servant (part I)
I. Jesus came to earth as a servant

A. He is spoken of by the prophets as a servant.
  • Isaiah 42:1 - "Here is my servant whom I uphold."
  • Isaiah 53:11 - "My righteous servant"
  • Zechariah 3:8 - "My servant, the branch"
B. He spoke of himself as a servant.
  • Luke 22:27 - I am among you as one who serves
  • Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve

2011-07-28 - Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nature
Isaiah 40:12

v40:12a - God measures the water in the hallow of his hand
We can probably hold about a tablespoon and not for very long
2/3 of the earth is covered in water and in places 6 miles deep
Yet God says He holds all that water in his hand

v40:12b - God marked off heaven with his breadth of his hand
Breadth = the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your little finger, spread apart
Ours is somewhere eight inches
We can not even calculate the distance across the universe
Nearest star beside the sun is 26 trillion miles away

v40:12c - Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket? Weighted the mountains and hills?
Baskets measurement is around 1/4 of a gallon
He holds the dust in such a container and weighs the mountains on a set of scales

As we think about these truths we will more and more appreciate God's greatness

2011-07-29 - Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nations
Isaiah 40:15

surely same as behold
Isaiah is saying "Think of this!" and stop and consider and ponder
A bucket of water is something a drop is nothing

Imagine going to the grocery store to pick up some fruit
Once you go through the checkout line and saying "Please wipe the dust off, I don't want to pay for the dust"
The concern seems absurd - that is how God sees the nations

This is not to say nations are not imposing on a human level - just shows how infinitely greater God is

Isaiah 40:16 - all the cedars in Lebanon would not enough for burnt offering
Shifts of 10,000 men at a time were involved in cutting trees and floating to Israel's cost
This still was not enough to be worthy of the dignity and greatness of God

Isaiah 40:17 - Nation as seen before God:
  • Nothing means nonexistent
  • Less than nothing intensifies that idea
  • Worthless - concept of being entirely empty of meaning or purpose
Purpose is to communicate how great God is
His greatness no one can fathom - Pslams 145:3
We can never comprehend Him but only bow in awe and adoration before Him

2011-07-30 - Fearing God - Control of Rulers

Kings and emperors are reduced to nothing before God and are completely subject to His sovereign power - Isaiah 40:23

The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; directs it where ever he please - Proverbs 21:1

He controls the destinies of rulers as well as their actions:

  • Nebuchadnezzar - king of Babylonian Empire / was driven insane and ate grass as cattle do for 7 years
  • Alexander the Great - conquered the known world / died when he was 32 years old
  • Napoleon - conquered all of Europe / died in excile
  • Hitler - conquered all of Europe / died in a besieged bunker

2011-08-01 - Mind of Christ - Servant, Washing Feet (part II)
The washing of the disciples feet was illustrative of Christ’s life and ministry
  • Acts 10:38 - How he went around doing good and healing all
  • Mark 1:29-41, 6:30-56 - Taking care of the needs around him
  • 2 Corinthians 8:9 - Became poor so we could become rich
  • Philippians 2:6-8 - Taking on the nature of a servant
The washing of the disciples feet is illustrative of Christ’s death on the cross.
  • Isaiah 53 - He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows
  • Matthew 20:28 - Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve
  • Galatians 1:4, 2:20 - Gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age
  • Ephesians 5:2, 25 - Gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering
No calling we have received will make us more like Christ than that of being a servant

2011-08-18 - Fearing God - Transcendent Majesty
Isaiah 6 - Repeats Holy 3x - "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty"
Hebrew language uses repetition to show emphasis

From time to time Jesus frequently add emphasis using "truely, truely" - John 3:3

We never read:
  • Wise, wise, wise is the Lord Almighty
  • Powerful, powerful, powerful is the Lord Almighty
Why is God's holiness so exalted?
  • God's perfection separates him from His creation
  • Attributes of mercy, might, power, love, purity are all within the meaning of holiness
  • His holiness is not just one of a number of attributes but the sum of all of them
  • God's name is has adjective 'holy'  next to it more than all other qualifiers combined
  • First and last son in the Both magnify the holiness of God
    • Moses crossing the Red Sea - Exodus 15:11
    • Those victorious over the beast - Revelation 15:4

2011-08-19 - Fearing God - No Darkness at All
Note: The power when out when I was in the middle of this study

God is holy not only from his creation but from sin
Be holy, because I am holy - Leviticus 11:44-45

He is light and in him there is no darkness at all - 1 John 1:5
Not only is he the only one, God is totally pure.

Isaiah 6 set both God's holiness and our show the only appropriate response to it

When God's holiness, his transcendent majesty, and His moral purity....
Our reaction becomes a realization of our own insignificance
Even though Isaiah was considered righteous man, his holiness suddenly became "unclean" - Isaiah 6:5
The word "unclean" is significant because it is what the leper must cry out when they walk around - Leviticus 13:34
Isiah saw his sinfulness as moral leprosy

2011-08-20 - Fearing God - Holy Justice, Holy Mercy
But God does not leave Isiah devastated

We tend to think of justice in a positive sense - child murdered and the community wants to see justice
The murder does not want to see justice

The wages of sin is death - in this sense we don't want to see justice done
God's justice is both holy and perfect
God always wants to give mercy
He can not be lenient and can not violate His own justice

The solution is Christ - he reconciled God's justice and mercy
The Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all - Isaiah 53:6

2011-08-25 - Fearing God - His Unseen Hand
God's wisdom is not apparent to us

None had the intention of caring out God's plan:
  • The cry of a baby saved the Jewish nation from destruction
  • Decree from a Romans emperor about a census being taken fulfilled a promise from God
  • Assyrian army attacking the Jewish nation
    • The Assyrian wanted to conquer nations
    • God used it to punish His people - Isaiah 10:5,7
  • Joesph was sold into slavery
    • His brothers did not out of jealous
    • God intention was to save many lives
Two cows acted contrary to their natural instincts and returned the ark of the covenant - 1 Samuel 6

2011-09-11 - Followup: Humility II (part II)
What’s in store for the humble person?
  1. Grace
  2. “Lifted up” – growing and being blessed
  3. Relief because his burdens and anxieties will be carried by God
  4. Better relationships (God opposes the proud, so do other people)
When is it the hardest for you to be humble? Why?
Who is it hardest for you to be humble towards? Why?
Are you willing to change these things so you can please God? How can I help?

Isaiah 66:2 - God is excited about the humble person.

How to be humble when you sin:
  1. Accept full responsibility (don’t blame others for your actions)
  2. Make no excuses (don’t be defensive)
  3. Apologize humbly and go on your way rejoicing.
What to do when others sin against you:
  1. Tell them in a respectful way (don’t give in to faithlessness or fear)
  2. Focus on your love for them and not on what they have done to you.
  3. Forgive them (like Jesus did you) and move on being better friends.
Humility is a characteristic of a true follower of Jesus
To clothe yourself with Christ is to clothe yourself with humility.

2011-10-17 - Genesis 17 - Abram becomes Abraham

Summary

God made a covenant with Abram and renamed him Abraham. He renamed Sarai Sarah and promised them a son. The men were circumcised.

Observations

Genesis 17:9 - As for you, you must keep my covenant
First, God came to Abram and Abram fell facedown. God told him what His part of the covenant - the promises that Abram would be a father of many nations. But there are two sides to covenant - we have commitment too. Sometimes we just love to look at God's promises but ignore our side of the covenant. God freely gives and will always out give us but we must do our part as well. What parts of our relationship with God are one sided?

Genesis 17:17 - Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?
Sometimes what He says to us are hard to believe or understand. But His ways are much higher than our ways [Isaiah 55:9]. Despite our understanding at the time, we need to trust what God says. What promises of promise of God are we not trusting? Why?

Personal Application

I know I can one-sided and stubborn in my thoughts and sometimes in my relationships. When I get my mind set to do something, that is the way it is. This can be a strength in some situations but a very big weakness if I am contrary to God's thinking. I need to be humble and allow God to change my thoughts and my ways.

2011-10-21 - Mind Change - God is in control

2011-11-01 - Mind Change - God works for your good
In all things God works for your good.

No exceptions and no lapses.

Even in what happened yesterday.

Even in something that caused great pain.

Even in something that dashed your hopes.

All things means all things.

Isaiah 49:15-16 - Even if mothers were to forget, I could never forget you

2012-02-06 - Ministry - Compassion: The Heart of Jesus
John 11:33-35
In a world so full of pain, hardship and suffering the compassion of Jesus lights the world. It is a comfort to know that "our God is full of compassion".

Psalms 116:5
Jesus was deeply moved by people's suffering. Jesus sincerely cared and invested his heart in others. Does the hardship of others cause us to invest our hearts or harden them? Do we imitate Jesus' heart? We can learn to be compassionate only when we have allowed Jesus to comfort us.

2 Corinthians 1:3-7
  • Compassion causes us to act. Mark 1:40 - 42
  • Compassion compels us to invest emotionally. John 11: 33 - 35
  • Compassion inspires hope. Mark 5:25 - 34
Questions
  • Do we have compassion on all people? - Psalms 145:9
  • Do we restore people with compassion? - Zechariah 10:16
  • Do we show compassion to the weak? - Isaiah 42:3 & 4
  • Do we stifle compassion in our ministries? - Amos 1:11
  • Do you see the spiritual suffering of people?
Share with someone today about your faith, the church or the relationships you have that ease your suffering and give you hope

2012-03-03 - Fear of Failure - Failure to speak the truth
by Adesha Johnson - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ

Isaiah 59

Failure to speak the truth does not have to be fatal

A character sin in my life is deceitfulness. I'm insecure and will often turn to something other than God to find security. Ironically, when I'm in this state, I really feel like I'm doing the right thing! Isaiah 59:1-21 opened up my eyes to the inner workings of deceit. Verse 13 shows how deceit begins and ends. First, I rebel against the Lord by having shorter prayer and bible study and not turning to him as soon as I've sinned. Second, I
start lying about how I'm doing and feeling. It's at those times that I find myself easily embittered at people around me. My bitterness is a direct result of the guilt I feel because of my deceit. Here's the bottom line: The Lord loves the truth!

Decision: To be truthful daily in regards to sin, guilt and how I am feeling and to continue studying out Truth in the scriptures.

2012-03-04 - Fear of Failure - God Sticks By Us When We Fail
by Rhys Kiaaina - Region Leader: San Francisco Church of Christ

Isaiah 49:15

Whenever I fail, I feel like I am being left behind. That somehow God has left me. But Scripture says God remembers. He will not forget me. If we are separated, the reality is that I have left Him. Whenever I fail, I doubt God's motives. I think He is angry with me and disappointed in me. But God has you and I engraved on the palm of His hand. Isn't that incredible? He's got a tattoo of you and me on the palm of His hand! God made a decision a long time ago that He would stick by us for life! Whenever I experience failure, I get the 3-D's: Depressed, Distracted, and Discouraged. I focus on what I have failed to do, rather than what God is able to accomplish. God's love is deeper than a mother's for a child. There is no reason for me to get discouraged because God has always "got my back".

Decisions:
  1. I will remember that God is with me and do something for someone else to show I believe in them and I am with them.
  2. To trust in the Bible and read it every time I feel 2. like God is disappointed in me.
  3. To show love to a person in action and in truth if I feel like God doesn't love me.

Like young people in love carving their names to profess their love, God has engraved you on the palms of his hand - Isaiah 49:16

  • They saw a demon-possessed Legion, Jesus saw a man who could change ten cites - Mark 5
  • They saw a impetuous pebble, Jesus called him the Rock - Matthew 16:18

God saw us for who we really were and yet treasures us like jewels in his hand.

2012-10-20 - Prayer of the Righeous - Singing to Me
Zephaniah 3:17
  • He has taken away our punishment
  • He has turned back our enemy
  • He is mighty to save
  • He rejoices over us with singing

He loves to hear us being happy
My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song - Psalms 28:7

2012-11-02 - Centrality of the Heart (part II)
The Christian life is a love affair of the heart
It can not be lived primarily as a set of principles

What must we do? Love the Lord your God with all of your heart - Luke 10:26
The truth of the gospel is intended to free us to love God
If we ignore our heart and only try to live out our religion solely as correct doctrine or ethics, our passion is crippled

What God cares about is the inner life, the life of the heart - Matthew 23:25-28
Our heart is the key to the Christian life - Isaiah 29:13

Paul - the hardness of the heart is behind all the addictions and evils of the human race - Romans 1:21-25
Above all we are to guard our heart

It was from the longing of our hearts that most of us first responded to Jesus
What changed?

It is possible to recover from the lost life of the heart - we must leave what is familiar and comfortable
Change our heart and go back to when we lived with our heart, a heart of a child - Mark 10:15

2013-01-01 - Prayer of the Righeous - God is a Consuming Fire (part I)

God is a consuming fire who should be feared - Hebrews 12:29

He is God who wants us to love him and not idols - Deuteronomy 4:24

God is a blessed and only Ruler, king of kings and lord of Lords - 1 Timothy 6:15

Our problem is that we think God is like us
My thoughts are not your thoughts - Isaiah 55:8

Societies throughout history have developed their own relgions based off God's which human resemblance:

  • Greek methoology is full of sinful gods
  • Hinduism feature gods who remind of ourselves

Our Father is without blemish or stain
In fact many can say, if God is like my father, I want nothing to do with Him

God appeared to Ezekiel in blazing fire and he fell facedown - Ezekiel 1:27-28
John saw Jesus with eyes of blazing fire and fell at his feet as though he was dead - Revelation 1:14-16T

The paradox of God: He says to not be afraid but at the same time to have a humble, contrite spirit - Isaiah 66:2
When a holy God confronts sinful humans, the only result can be fear and trembling

2013-03-06 - Prayer of the Righeous - More Powerful Than We Can Imagine (part II)

Two different responses to God's power:

1. Moses doubted God's power to feed the 600,000 men
God asked His arm was too short - Numbers 11:21-23

2. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego faced the furnace
The were convicenced God would save them from it - Daniel 3:17-18
They saw Jesus' glory and he spoke about him - John 12:41

  • We are a mist - James 4:14
  • The nations are drop in the bucket - Isaiah 40:14

Imagine trying to asking a clerk compensate for dust when weighing an item for purchase - it would be absurd

How do you current view God?

2013-09-11 - Men Leave Childhood Behind

We need to choose to let go of childishness and foolishness
When I became a man, I did away with childish things - 1 Corinthians 13:11

Clinging to childhood while growing into manhood is like trying to run in opposite directions at the same time aka the “Peter Pan Syndrome”

Teen years are often wasted and fathers have become silent.

Rather than initiating serious conversations with wiser men, they goof off with fools in sports bars

Too many men want the freedoms, rewards, and privileges of manhood but only the responsibilities of boyhood

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ - Ephesians 4:14-15

Do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature - 1 Corinthians 14:20

The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands - Isaiah 32:8

2015-02-06 - Racing for the Bottom

What do you think you are doing, building a beautiful tomb for yourself - Isaiah 22:16

Some have a "do what ever it takes" attitude toward raising up the ranks
God takes a dim view of such a strategies

Shebna discovered the quickest way to the bottom by using his high position to promote himself
The Lord stopped his plans, removed him from office, and exciled him far from Judah - Isaiah 22:17-18

God gave him everything he needed to become a great servant but he used it for himself

God wants to be the center of all your plans, God gave us gifts to exalt him not ourselves

2015-03-18 - Overcoming Inadequacy

ISAIAH

It's over, I am doomed - Isaiah 6:4-5

Isaiah looked into the mirror of God's perfection and saw his own inadequacy starting back at him

He knew he wasn't fit to serve God, much less stand in his presence

God sent an angel and tocuhed his lips with coal and pronounced his guilt removed and sins forgiven - Isaiah 6:6-7

Isaiah changed and boldly called out, "Here I am. Send me" - Isaiah 6:8

2015-04-21 - A Choice

I will not test the Lord like that - Isaiah 7:12

Ahaz, the ungodly king of Judah, found himself in a dilemma of equally difficult alternatives

Assyria, a dominate power of the day, was a growing treat to Judah, Israel, and Syria

His choice was to side with his enemies - Israel and Syria or Assyria and trust God would work things out or side with Assyria

Ahaz made an unwise chose to side with Assyriaw which had disastous consequences for Judah - 2 Kings 16:7-9

2015-05-25 - Suffering Servant

All of us have strayed away - Isaiah 53:5

Jesus Christ was the perfect example of that kind of giving

Isaiah saw this example of a humble, suffering servant from his own time

He depicts a man who willingly subjected himslef to unspeakable suffering on the behalf of others

How does Jesus' selfless giving motivate you?

2015-05-27 - Always Prepared

Beginning with this same scriptiure, Philip told him  the good news about Jesus

Be Prepared and the Boy Scout motto and is good advice when you meet someone who wants to know what your life of faith is all about

Philip met an Ethiopian eunuch and he had some very direct questions concerning the writtings of Isaiah

Philip was ready with the answers

The man from Ethiopia, like many in our world today, want answers reguarding God and his own destiny

If someone asks about your Christian hop, always be ready to explain it - 1 Peter 3:15

Are you prepared?

2015-06-06 - Man of Hope

Even when there was no hope, Abraham kept hoping of becoming a father of man nations - Romans 4:18

Hope - a sense of expectancy even when the circumstaces suggest packing it in and giving up

At age 100 years  Abraham still had no children

Humanly speaking, Abraham had every reason to wonder if God had forgotten his promise

Abraham remained convicted God would keep all his promises

God blessed Abraham and his wife with a son - he became a father of many nations

Those who trust in me will never be put to shaem - Isaiah 49:23

Has God given you an yet-to-be-fullfilled promise? Have you grown weary in waiting?

2015-11-14 - No Middle Man

I have always been faithful, single-minded, always doing what pleases you - 2 Kings 20:2-3

Hezehiah had been deathly ill for some time and was setting all his affairs in order because his illness was terminal - 2 Kings 2:1

Isaiah had a special connection to God and it would be tempting to plead his case directly with Isaiah

When Isaiah told Hezehiah he was about to die, he went to his private place of prayer and talked directly to the Lord

Hezehiah didn't ask to extend his life but reminded God he had been a good and faithful servant

God decided to extend Hezehiah's life

Hezehiah's willingness to straingth to God saved his his life

2018-03-30 - The Orginality of Jesus

No one in Jesus' day raise the question of whether he was original or not

No personality like that of Jesus had ever been encased in flesh before

Jesus began by reading a scripture in Isaiah that others had read but they did not understand it meaning
Jesus understood it fully and read it and the scripture became new

Religion is partly ceremony and partly ethics

Jesus emphased mercy instead of sacrifice

Accent in his teaching was full of assurance, certainty and authority

He never hesitated, speculated, or showed any indication of a wavering mind - I tell you the truth

Jesus was the complete man

He was differernt from all other men that had ever been and he said so
