2010-12-02 - Mission - Taking Up the Cross Two questions to ask ourselves: Is the power of the cross producing real changes in my life? Are lost souls being radically converted as I preach? The message of the cross will seem foolish to those we are teaching if they do not see the daily demonstration of its power for us who are being saved Christians described in Romans 6
Our days are composed of countless choices and decisions Each step that Jesus took towards the cross he took willingly It takes 1000s of bricks to build a house, it takes 1000s of righteous choices to build a Christ-like character Our hearts - lost world needs to know how we feel towards our Father Our conversation - we should never get tired of telling our conversation story Our example - Our daily temptations and victories should be only shared |
2010-12-08 - Mission - Cannot Help Proclaiming (part II) What else compelled Peter and John? 3. Having a spiritual perspective of the plan of God God orchestrated situations so people will find him - Acts 17:26-27 Satan can lull us to sleep with his lies If I miss this opportunity, maybe God will use someone else, they don't look interested They apostles felt the burden of salvation They were convicted that they were the only hope of salvation If they stopped, hope was gone We must have a heartfelt conviction that we are God's vehicles to reach a lost and desperate world 4. Must understand that Satan's victory/defeat is determined by our faithfulness to proclaim the word of God boldly We have two God-given weapons:
He wins every time we do not open our mouth - we must not be silent |

2012-01-19 - Ministry - Remaining In Christ John 15 Remaining in Christ seems like an easy thing to do yet it challenges us as disciples. We have spent years finding our identity in the world, in success, in how others feel about us. We strive for a "good self-esteem." Instead, Jesus calls for us to have a "proper self-esteem" and a proper view of ourselves. This is found by remaining in Christ. We are called to be as intimately connected with Christ as a vine is with a branch. That connection brings fruit, change and answered prayer. We are to find our identity in Christ, not in ourselves. The call of discipleship is to abandon self, not to make ourselves better. Christ is better; we are lost and dead outside of Him. God wants us to get our spiritual identity from his Son. As disciples we are called to a Person, not to a program. To relationship, not to religiosity. We are called to Christ, not to Christianity. An interesting exercise to do would be to count how many times the expressions "In Christ" or "in Him" are used in the book of Ephesians, a great book on being "in Christ." Questions/Followup

2012-01-23 - Ministry - Unless You Change Matthew 18:2-4 Deeply rooted in the mature of adults is a strong sense of resistance to change. Even when we feel deeply discontent with our lives, we are more willing to stay in the familiarity of our misery than to venture into the untested waters of change. Fortunately, Jesus, in his desire to put us out of our misery, makes it clear that for a Christian to make it to heaven we must keep on changing. We must choose to grow even if it is challenging, difficult, tiring, confusing or scary. Why this strong direction? Because there is just so much about our hearts, character, habits, lives that the Lord wants to change! Too many souls will be lost if we stop growing. Jesus gives us the secret to change in the same verse - humble yourself. Thank God we live in a kingdom where the Lord rushes to help the humble. He will send the word, wise advice from a disciple, a protecting angel, and a physical blessing, all to the humble. It seems that we have two choices: Be humbled or get humbled. Questions:

2012-01-25 - Ministry - Jesus' Rescue Mission Matthew 18:10-14 (Luke 15:3-10) It is comforting to know we serve a God who is not only all-powerful and all-knowing, but also all-loving. Sometimes the spiritual battle gets so intense that we wonder if God really cares. This passage proves how deeply God cares about each individual "sheep". How we do spiritually does matter to God. He does not want any of his disciples to wander off and fall away. Jesus is the perfect shepherd who will do whatever it takes to go after the one lost sheep. Each soul matters to God. Jesus' heart is to keep on searching, keep on hoping, and keep on loving until the sheep is found and returns home. We need to take on Jesus' heart and persevere in rescuing those who have given up on their relationship with God. Satan wants us to get hurt, get bitter and angry instead of being compassionate and determined to help those who have lost faith. Let's be inspired by Jesus' unfailing love and decide to be part of Jesus' rescue team! Questions:

2012-01-26 - Ministry - Producing a Harvest Matthew 13:1-23 How fruitful have you been in the last year? Are the worries of this life making you unfruitful? There are so many things that we could worry about: our school, spouses, dating life, children, money, jobs, etc. Do we get so consumed with ourselves and our lives that we forget our purpose in life? Nothing will come of our efforts to save the lost if we are filled with stress and worry. We will choke out the power of the word and of God we focus on our worries. God wants us to have a fruitful life! When we really hear God's word and embrace it, we will produce a harvest beyond our wildest dreams. Have you let stress and worry in your life choke out the word? Make a prayer list of all the things you are worried about and pray through them. Pray with faith and see how God moves in your life when you cast your anxieties on Him. |

2012-11-01 - Centrality of the Heart (part I) The heart does not respond to principles and programs It does not seek efficiency but passion Jesus so often taught and related to people by telling parables and asking questions Something calls to us through our experiences It awakes a yearning for intimacy, beauty, and adventure It fuels our search for meaning, for wholeness, for a sense of being truly alive Our heart of hearts is the passion of our life We can not hear his voice if we have lost touch with our heart The true story of each person is the journey of his or her heart Jesus spoke his strongest warnings about people who had a loss of heart (mostly about the religious people) For many of us, our faith is more lie a series of problem that need to be solved We see a problem and tinker with our outer lives We ask what are we suppose to be doing? - Luke 10:25 Jesus did not respond with a set of instructions |
2012-11-02 - Centrality of the Heart (part II) The Christian life is a love affair of the heart It can not be lived primarily as a set of principles What must we do? Love the Lord your God with all of your heart - Luke 10:26 The truth of the gospel is intended to free us to love God If we ignore our heart and only try to live out our religion solely as correct doctrine or ethics, our passion is crippled What God cares about is the inner life, the life of the heart - Matthew 23:25-28 Our heart is the key to the Christian life - Isaiah 29:13 Paul - the hardness of the heart is behind all the addictions and evils of the human race - Romans 1:21-25 Above all we are to guard our heart It was from the longing of our hearts that most of us first responded to Jesus What changed? It is possible to recover from the lost life of the heart - we must leave what is familiar and comfortable Change our heart and go back to when we lived with our heart, a heart of a child - Mark 10:15 |
2013-06-19 - Why we need men of resolution (part I) A story about a man falling asleep at the wheel while his family is in the car - illustrates where countless men are today We have been lulled into a dream by our own passivity and laziness Women are stressed out and longing for the man in their lives to wake up, rescue them. God’s Word commands husbands and fathers to lovingly lead. Men are being told they don’t have the permission or responsibility to lead. No man and no family is a lost cause when God gets involved. Because you are the one in the driver’s seat, you can become the one He uses to steer your family back onto the path that will lead them to a place of safety, strength, and health. Leadership determines direction. |
2013-06-25 - Why we need men of resolution (part II) Our relationship with our father is very telling as to why we are and who we are. “What does my dad really think about me?” Lots of fathers don’t realize their vital role. Many issues come from fathers having lost their sense of purpose. Society is guiding boys to remain boys as long as possible— extending childhood into their thirties—while forcing girls to become women long before they are ready. Millions of young men are staying single. They want the privileges and rewards of manhood but only the responsibilities and moral requirements of boys. God has a special place in His heart for two specific groups of people: fatherless children and widows. Dad have good intention but there many things working against them:
Devil will never stop attacking what God prioritizes. |
2015-02-07 - Costly Revenge Then he stabbed Abner in the stomach and killed him in revenge - 2 Samuel 3:27 Revenge cost both parties dearly Joab enjoyed success in the military - becoming the top general Joah lured Abner to the gate of Hebron and murdered him His revenge came at a steep price, David praise Abner and cursed Joab and his family - 2 Samuel 3:28-29 Joab lost an important part of himself, he planted seeds of his own destruction - 1 Kings 2:5-6 When someone does you wrong, make it your business to forgive and move on so you don't miss out on good things God has placed before you. |
2015-02-22 - Dependent Attitude Must we bring you water from this rock? - Numbers 20:10 Sometimes we say "I did the best I could" but instead, we should say "I should have called you sooner" An independent spirit often keeps us from doing our best Moses became a humble, obedient servant yet in a moment he lost everything that he had worked so hard to gain
His prideful self-reliance cost him the opportunity to lead them to the promised land. What would it mean for you to rely on God? |
2015-05-14 - Know Your Identity Give us a king to judge us like the other nations have - 1 Samuel 8:5 God wanted Israel to be different from any other kingdom on earth Israel's elders wanted Samuel to give them a human king so they could fit in with the pagan nations God: "it's me they are rejecting, not you. They don't want me to be their king any longer" - 1 Samuel 8:7-8 Samuel did as God had told him as warned the people of the consequences of rejecting their true king When Israel's elders looked at the nations around them, they lost sight of their own identity Things were never the same for the name Whom do you trust to guide and lead you in every area of your life?

2015-05-23 - Influence from Within Never before had there been a king like Josiah who turned to the Lord will all his heart and soul and strength - 2 Kings 23:25 Josiah did what was pleasing to the Lord's sight - 2 Kings 22:2 His background did not set him up for greatness - his father was a wicked king that drug Judah into idolity For Josiah, it wasn't a matter of where he had come from but where he was headed:
Making a difference in the lives of people around you begins with changes within yourself |
2015-09-22 - Full Obedience An angel gave me this command from the Lord .. but the old man was lying to him - 1 Kings 13:18 The prophet from Judah failure to fully obey God's instructions led to personal disaster:
The prophet excuted the first part perfectly:
But the second part he failed - when home with an eldery prophet from Bethel because "God told him to" Partial obedience is really disobedience The prophet listened and lost everything - 1 Kings 13 |
2015-10-28 - Deceptive Feelings I long for the years gone by when God took care of me - Job 29:2 During his worst time of misery, Job began wondering if God still cared about him After he lost everything, Job felt abandoned and longed for the good old days God knew exactly how much Job had suffered but Job could not feel it Job was so focused on his suffering that he lost sight of the unchangeable fact that God would never abandon him Feelings speak truth about your pain but can lie about God's response God had never abandoned anyone he loves |
2015-11-07 - Right Now So he stole the hearts of all the people of Israel - 2 Samuel 15:6 David forgave and reinstated Absalom after murdering his brother In his desire to have what he wanted right now, he lost everything After David welcomed him back, Absalom began to plotting to kill his father so he could take the throne of Israel He beagan his treason by first winning the people's hearts and minds Absalom temporarly succeeded but in the end David's troops defeated him and he died a painful death Despite of Absalom's talents, leadership skills, and potential, his impatience messed up his chance at greatness

2015-11-27 - Peter's Changes Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptized - Acts 2:38 Some people who knew Peter wondered if he was the same person they had seen fall flat on his face so many times:
It didn't look as if Peter had the right stuff to be the kind of ambassador Jesus called him to be Peter preached with power and courage without regard to what could be some painful consequences He knew that his preaching would get him into deep trouble but he did it anyway and thousands turned to Jesus in one day - Acts 2:41 Peter show what can happen to a man who knows Jesus Christ and lives by the Holy Spirit's empowerment |
2016-01-29 - Genesis 25 - Esau and Jacob (part II)SummaryIsaac and Rebekah had twins: Esau and Jacob. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a meal. ObservationsGenesis 25:22 - the two children struggled with each other in the womb ApplicationGetting through the short-term pressure-filled moment is often the most difficult part of overcoming tempation. I need to have God's long term perpective when confronted with a short sided want. PrayerPraying for God's strength in my weaknesses |
2020-01-20 - Trust - A matter of perpective "Trust in God" can seem easy at times but when trouble hits, justice seems dead and love seems to vanish, many are appalled nature's "heartlessness" and "indifference" Jesus saw these same situations as evidences of God's love, his long-suffering patience, and willing to allow the lost to find him Countless people trusted God only to discover when evil fotune came, that trust was not as strong enough to stand the shock Trust shapes perpective Many things can blot out our trust in God:
Jesus had all of the dark experiences it is possible to have He has a message to commicate that would drive away gloom and woe the world to him Jesus trust was unbroken despite many rejections and even his own men forsaking him His death appeared to be a heart-breaking failure, but rather a victorious outcome for us |
2020-03-06 - Friendliness Common taunt of Scribes and Pharises that Jesus was a friend of sinners He was friendly to the lowest and the best of society, a trait which created great scandal These three statements about Jesus spoke a lot about how Jesus' heart toward others:
They tried to use his friendiness against him Example: Tax collectors - ones who gathered taxes by any means nessary including by extortion or other dishonest measures
Jesus made friends with them despite these truths It was one thing to talk down to a bad man and give good advise, it is another to eat with them Jesus cross the chasm over which no man was willing to do in that day and lost his reputation for the sake of being brotherly/friendly Made himself nothing because he was determined on being firendly to all - Philippians 2:17 Everyone is part of the human race, children of God, despite what they have done
