2010-10-30 - Contagious Christian - Barriers to Relationships (part I) Biblical Issues with understanding what friendships are in the Bible can be barriers to relationships Some feel that befriending people who are irreligious is questionable and maybe unbiblical A look at a few examples of some verses misunderstood James 4:4 - says not to be friends with the world 1 John 2:15-17 - world is referring to sin and evil that people commit, not to the people themselves We need to keep ourselves from being polluted by the world John 17:14 - we are not of this world is sometimes interpreted that we should not associate with people outside of God's family My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one - John 17:15-18 Jesus' purpose was to seek and save what is lost, he had to have relationships in the world to accomplish this - Luke 19:10 2 Corinthians 6:17 - Come out from them and be separate; avoid being yoked with unbelievers Not referring to everyday friendships but more formal alliances Paul in an earlier letter said that ordinary interactions with non-Christians is right and necessary - 1 Corinthians 5:9-10 Jesus was a friend of tax collectors and sinners - Luke 7:34 |

2011-07-29 - Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nations Isaiah 40:15 surely same as behold Isaiah is saying "Think of this!" and stop and consider and ponder A bucket of water is something a drop is nothing Imagine going to the grocery store to pick up some fruit Once you go through the checkout line and saying "Please wipe the dust off, I don't want to pay for the dust" The concern seems absurd - that is how God sees the nations This is not to say nations are not imposing on a human level - just shows how infinitely greater God is Isaiah 40:16 - all the cedars in Lebanon would not enough for burnt offering Shifts of 10,000 men at a time were involved in cutting trees and floating to Israel's cost This still was not enough to be worthy of the dignity and greatness of God Isaiah 40:17 - Nation as seen before God:

2011-09-01 - Fearing God - Requirements for growth (part I) The first requirement of growing in fear is having an undivided heart Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name - Psalms 86:11 It dentoes singleness of purpose, aim, and affections Second requirement is regular, consistent exposure of our minds and hearts to His Word:
Saul fell down in fear before Christ

2011-10-02 - Genesis 2 - Creation & Recreation Recap SummaryGod formed a man and gave him the garden in Eden, except for the tree of knowledge. Adam was alone so God made a woman as his partner. ObservationsGenesis 2:7 - from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life Personal ApplicationMany times I look for ways on how to automate work (it is part of the work I do as part of my career) but sometimes lose sight that work is what I am suppose to be doing. When automating tasks, I need to make sure I am using my additional time to do even more useful things that God has called me to do. |
2011-10-11 - Genesis 11 - The Tower of Babel SummaryThey began building a great tower for themselves, but the Lord confused their language. Shem's line included Abram who married Sarai. Is it to further my relationship with God or for selfish gain or to please someone else? |
2011-11-04 - Mind Change - Challenge Decide to enjoy the challenge. If it is going to be there, you might as well enjoy it. God is allowing it for some good purpose. Like Jacob, don’t let go it until it blesses you. James 1:2-4 - Consider trials a pure joy |
2011-11-28 - Gratitude (part I) The topic of gratitude is extremely important and one that we probably don’t stress enough. As a new disciple you want to get into some good habits of gratitude. Being thankful to God for your salvation is really just the beginning. Being grateful for every situation you find yourself in is the goal. In the study, we will look at God’s call be thankful. Gratitude is a commandment of God

2012-01-26 - Ministry - Producing a Harvest Matthew 13:1-23 How fruitful have you been in the last year? Are the worries of this life making you unfruitful? There are so many things that we could worry about: our school, spouses, dating life, children, money, jobs, etc. Do we get so consumed with ourselves and our lives that we forget our purpose in life? Nothing will come of our efforts to save the lost if we are filled with stress and worry. We will choke out the power of the word and of God we focus on our worries. God wants us to have a fruitful life! When we really hear God's word and embrace it, we will produce a harvest beyond our wildest dreams. Have you let stress and worry in your life choke out the word? Make a prayer list of all the things you are worried about and pray through them. Pray with faith and see how God moves in your life when you cast your anxieties on Him. |
2012-01-31 - Ministry - The Burden of Jesus Matthew 11:25 Jesus calls the weary and burdened to Himself and promises rest for them. The rest that He refers to is not to stop working and be idle. He is calling us to give Him the burdens of our souls. He calls us to take his yoke upon us. What is this yoke? The yoke of caring about others. The yoke of humility. It takes far less energy to be humble that it does to be prideful. It is much easier to be gentle than it is to be terse or gruff. Jesus beckons us to learn from Him. Really the yoke of Christ would finally lead him to the cross. That does not seem easy or light. In fact, our purpose to evangelize the world in this generation is neither easy nor light. The attitude that we are called to have is one of humility and gentleness. Questions/Followup:

2012-02-20 - Fear of Failure - Relying on God Never Fails by Jeremy Clark, San Francisco Church of Christ Jeremiah 17:5-10; Hosea 10:12-13 Often the failures in my life have felt devastating. They have made me doubt myself, made me doubt my purpose and made me doubt God. When I began to lead a ministry, I thought I could do it by myself. I was out to prove to myself that I was capable. As I began to lead I ran around all the time, I was exhausted, anxious, and worried about getting in trouble every day. I was miserable. What I didn't realize was that as I was trying to prove that I could do it, God was proving to me that I couldn't without him. My failure made me want to quit. I felt cursed; it seemed all the the work I did meant nothing. God was showing me my pride, but instead of praying more, I worried more and ran around more and was completely ineffective. My failure came because of my pride, my unwillingness to be open, and not getting the help I needed. I was relying on myself, and God was teaching me that he would not bless it. That lesson was hard to learn, but one so valuable to my life once I was willing to learn to rely on God and not my own strength.

2012-02-22 - Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens. 1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21 God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind. 2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8 We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples. Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I. Decisions:

2013-06-25 - Why we need men of resolution (part II) Our relationship with our father is very telling as to why we are and who we are. “What does my dad really think about me?” Lots of fathers don’t realize their vital role. Many issues come from fathers having lost their sense of purpose. Society is guiding boys to remain boys as long as possible— extending childhood into their thirties—while forcing girls to become women long before they are ready. Millions of young men are staying single. They want the privileges and rewards of manhood but only the responsibilities and moral requirements of boys. God has a special place in His heart for two specific groups of people: fatherless children and widows. Dad have good intention but there many things working against them:
Devil will never stop attacking what God prioritizes. |
2013-06-26 - Why we need men of resolution (part III) Fathers are to reveal and represent God All fatherhood comes from Him (Ephesians 3:14–15). Should be able to see these qualities of God:
The word father means “founder, source, chief, or leader.” Godhead described, it is always God the Father first, then the Son, then the Holy Spirit. Want to know what God is like? then just look at Jesus. Are representing your heavenly Father? Thist is your priceless purpose.
Great homes don’t just happen, need to be intentionally cultivated and guarded. Let truth, love, and wise discipline become constant ingredients of fathering. |
2013-10-21 - Resolve to Lead Your Family The greater responsibility to raise your children is yours. When the dad leads, kids are up to twenty times more likely to stay in church long-term than when moms are the spiritual leaders at home

2014-03-21 - Train Them to Honor Authority (part I) Honor is attractive
The whole concept of authority comes from God. Earthly authority is His design and tool for creating order and for keeping us accountable and responsible, for honoring good and for punishing evil - Romans 13:1-4 Authorities on earth help keep us mindful of His superior, eternal authority God can turn the heart of anyone in a leadership position in any direction - Proverbs 21:1 We should be like Jesus and submit to our imperfect, human authorities knowing that God uses them to carry out His purposes - John 19:11 The only time we should not submit to them is when they are asking us to disobey God and sin - Acts 5:29 Notice that Scripture does not tell us to obey them only if we agree with their judgment - Hebrews 13:17-18 When dishonoring authority, you are not rebelling against an individual but against God Himself. Handling and responding to authority is serious business. |
2014-05-02 - The Miracle of John's birth Luke 1:13 - Your prayer has been heard A priest’s intercession for the nation undoubtedly included a petition for the Messiah, Israel’s promised Deliverer and King. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe was ready to answer a prayer that had been prayed for hundreds of years, but He purposely chose a man who could pray an old prayer with a fresh heart. The prayer at that exact moment may not have been for a son. Zechariah could not possibly have known was how intimately connected would be his corporate prayer for the Messiah and his personal prayer for a son. Not becoming hopeless over a repetitious request can be terribly challenging. We need to continue to walk faithfully with God even though you are disappointed. Zechariah waited a long time for God’s answer, but when it came, it exceeded everything the priest could have thought or asked. Can you even imagine being told in advance of your child’s conception that he or she would bring joy and delight to you and be great in the sight of the Lord?

2015-04-20 - Gratitude Go back to your family and tell them everything God has done for you - Luke 8:39 People who express daily gratitude reported higer levels of:
Jesus and his disciples encountered a violent demon-possessed man - naked, out of his mind, completely alone He calmly and purposefully took control of the situation and delivered the man from his life of torment Jesus told the man to go home and tell everyone what had happened The man gratefully followed Jesus' instructions When you think of everything that God has done for you, what other response is there but to follow him? A greateful heart is the best, infectious witness to the goodness and power of God

2015-04-28 - Created for a Purpose God created human beings in his own image - Genesis 1:27 Nothing defines and motivates a man like a sense of purpose and reason for being Adam never questioned his purpose in life - The Lord put him on earth to enjoy fellowship with God Adam belonged to God and God belonged to Adam He alone could intentionally respond to God in obedience and love and relate to the Father Adam's sin threw all creation in choas Jesus, the second Adam, came to give us the opportunity to enjoy the fellowship Adam had orginally enjoyed with God - 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 Do you ever wonder why God created you and put you where you are? |
2015-05-18 - Wisdom to Listen Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God - Genesis 41:38 One of a man's most important traits is his willingness to listen The Pharaoh that lived during Joseph's lifetime had the humility to listen and thus saved countless lives Pharaoh sent for Joseph, who was in prision at the time, and asked him what his dreams meant Pharaoh listened to Joseph and appointed him to administer to the food program through the coming drough Have you learned to listen? God places people in your life with the purpose of giving you wisdom and direction |
2015-05-26 - Nothing to Fear Don't you care that we're going to drown? - Mark 4:38 A storm came up that deeply worried even the expereinced fishermen on board Jesus remined so calm he slept through the worst the Sea of Galilee could deliver The disciples didn't have a sense of Jesus' ultimate distiny of the cross Jesus knew his purpose for coming to earth and there was nothing that could keep him from fulfilling it. He calmed the storm by speaking to it and the disciples learned - When Jesus accompanies you, you have nothing to fear |
2015-06-08 - Letting Go God intended it all for good so I could save the lives of many people - Genesis 50:19-20 Even after his brothers sold him into slavery, Joesph thrived in every situation because God oversaw everything that happened to him God used Joseph's circumstances for His own purpose:
God cause everything to work together for the good of those who love God - Romans 8:28 Have negative emotions or bound by an unfair past? When you understand God cause use everything that happens to you for his purpose, those things begin to lose their grip on you |
2015-06-30 - Risk Assessment Many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers - Acts 9:13-14 God had geiven Ananias an assignmen that mad him very uncomfortable Saul's sole purpose in coming to Damascus had been to persecute him and the other believers Ananias remined God of the terrible things Saul had done but God did not relent He intended for Saul to take his message of salvation to both Gentiles and Jews - Acts 9:15 Ananias weighed the risks and knew that the benefits of obedience far outwieghted anything he feared Because he obeyed, he was able to play a supporting role in God's plan to spread the gospel throughout the world |
2015-07-03 - Righteous Anger Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple - John 2:15 Jesus became angry times when he saw authorities have a lack of love and true faith in his heavenly father He espcially got angry this time with the money changers who were greedy in their dealing with those pilgrims trying to purshase sacrificial animals Jesus always directed his anger at things that stood in the way of God's purposes for mankind Do you express your anger over the same kind of issues that angered Jesus? When you become angry, ask yourself:

2015-07-25 - Forgive and Forget Now it is time to forgive and comfort him - 2 Corinthians 2:7 Paul told the Corinthian Christians to forgive a man who had caused him and the church a lot of trouble God's purpose for discipline is to forgive and restore, not to condemn and reject Paul apparently shared these believers' sense of injury but he eagerly extended forgiveness and restoration to give the man some hope and encouragement Who in your life needs that kind of forgiveness and encouragement? |
2015-07-29 - Unexpected Blessings The Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given Jeremiah - Ezra 1:1 What tools has God used to mold you?
Cyrus issued a decree to free the people of Judah and have all the gold and silver returned At first, it might appear acted out of compassion and love of God He did not serve God but God stirred his heart Cyrus was an instrument in God's hands as he worked out his will in his people's lives When you submit to his will and purpose, he can even use thing you consider "secular". |
2015-09-06 - Place in the Body Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you - Colossians 4:17 Church on Sunday morning, do you recongnize that God has a specific purpose and ministry for you that day? Don't miss out on the blessing you can receive when you assume your place of service in the body of Christ Archippus' ministry was apparently important enough to the apostle Paul that he encouraged the young man to make sure he got the job done:
God has given you a particular ministry and the gifts it takes to effectively carry it out. Are you pursuing your role in the church with all of your heart? |
2024-01-13 - Intro (part II) God gives us a purpose, otherwise we are just heading to dust only no matter what we do It is easier to believe all beliefs are correct - 7 blind men and the elephant parable = 7 blind touch a elephant and feel like they have some something different, like tail, tusk, etc Common objections to a single true of God:
All make truth claims, many stated truths are mutually exclusive, for example:
