2011-06-18 - Mind of Christ - Discipleship (part III) Christ’s word teaches us about discipleship Luke 14:25-35 1. Large crowds followed Jesus 2. Jesus has already called them disciples (Luke 9:18,23). Now He says they cannot be His disciples unless they meet this standard. Why does He change? Because before this they had been curious disciples, possibly convinced disciples, but not committed disciples. Now He wants them to go the full measure. We see, then, how the term disciple goes through an evolutionary process during the ministry of Christ, the story of the gospels. 3. The terms of discipleship are all-encompassing.

2011-08-31 - Fearing God - Growing in Fear There is no point to a spiritual retreat if it does not affect our lives back home We need to be consistly in awe, reverence, honor, and worship on a high level How do we grow in fearing God? Jeremiah 32:38-41
We need to fan it into flames - 2 Timoty 1:6 The Holy Spirit helps - it is our responsiblity to grow

2011-09-17 - Proverbs on Purity (part II) #3. Cling to what is Good Proverbs 7:1-5 - God's word will lead us to purity of mind There’s a saying, “Garbage in Garbage out”
#4. Avoid the temptation Proverbs 4:14-15 - Don't take the path of evil people. Don't live the way sinners do. Proverbs 4:25-27 - Don't turn to the right or left. One way to not give in to lust is to avoid it or flee from it. James 4:7 - Resist the devil, and he will flee from you Avoid the places that are tempting to you (wild parties, lustful parts of the city, TV shows)

2011-09-28 - Proverbs on Advice - Without Instruction 4. Without instruction, you hurt others Proverbs 10:17 - He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray John Donne wrote, “No man is an island entirely to himself, every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main” When (in our independence) we disregard godly advice, we hurt others as well as ourselves. We set an example which by action and attitude say that we do not need others in our lives 5. Without instruction we are stupid Proverbs 12:1 - Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid The Bible uses the word “stupid”. It’s found only four times in the NIV (Job 18:3, Proverbs 12:1, Ecclesiastes 10:3, 2 Timothy 2:23)
Challenge: How do you respond when someone challenges you?

2012-01-13 - Genesis 20 - Abraham lies about Serah at GerarSummaryIn Gerar Abraham said, "Sarah is my sister." King Abimelech took her but God warned him in a dream. He restored Sarah to Abraham. ObservationsGenesis 20:3 - You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken Personal ApplicationI usually don't have an issue with knowing right from wrong. It is usually that I am not aware of what I am doing. I am either not paying attention or not focused. I need to watch my life closely so I will be righteous in God's eyes and so others can be saved because of it [1 Timothy 4:16]. |
2012-01-28 - Ministry - Compromise or Conviction? John 6: 60-69; Luke 9: 57-62; Luke 14:25-33;Matt. 18:5-9 How many times do we face the decision to compromise our faith just to win the approval of people around us or to be so desperately accepted? We know we should be strong, we know we should have deep convictions and take a stand for God, but we give into the peer pressure at school, work, and the people-pleasing non-conflict avoiding sinful nature inside all of us! We want to be liked! We want to avoid confrontation, conflict, and courageously calling others out of sin! Jesus loved God and others so much he was willing to tell the truth no matter how it made someone feel! He preached what people needed to hear and not what they wanted to hear! He laid out the hard teachings with convictions not with apologies! Even when disciples decided to leave and no longer follow him, he did not compromise the truth! He let them leave and challenged others,"do you want to leave to?" Are you ready to die to compromise? What are the areas where you compromise your faith? Identify two areas that you consistently compromise in either at work, home or on campus? How often do you compromise? Share with your spouse, friends or d-group what you give-in to and your desire to want to change. |
2012-01-29 - Ministry - The Reaper's Heart John 4:31-38 Jesus gets satisfaction by doing the Father's will and by finishing his work. Wow. Often we can see the work of the ministry as toil and drudgery. Jesus derived joy and fulfillment from changing lives. The disciples saw the harvest of crops four months in to the future. Jesus saw the harvest of souls as always being ripe. We do not have to wait for the harvest of souls. It is always ripe and always ready. Are the reapers ready for it? The reaper is looking for a crop to reap. Sometimes we can fall into the trap of deciding we will be fruitful at a later date. The harvest will not wait. Someone is going to reap souls. Write down the names of five people whom you could help become a Christian. Have faith as you write the list. It takes work to reap a harvest. Are you prepared to do the work that it will take? |
2012-02-24 - Fear of Failure - When We Don't Meet Expectations by Maritza Kim - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ Jeremiah 1:4-10 To me, "failure" has meant not living up to expectations--either what I expect of myself or what others expect of me. In my pride, I get angry when my weakness is exposed, and I see how ill equipped I am to face a certain task or spiritual battle. Instead of trusting in God and turning to him to strengthen me, give me wisdom, and make me able, I get a quitter's mentality. I decide that because I am not already able, I will take myself out so I no longer have to face my failure. I decide to take the easy road, where I can be "successful" and no longer feel the pressure to change the core sin in my character. In this scripture, I learn that God has had a destiny for our lives. God has known me since 'before I was in the womb.' He knows the stuff I'm made of. He knows what I am weak in and what I can and can't do. Yet he has still called me to serve him in awesome ways, and to do it with all my heart. He has appointed me to serve him, and that needs to be my focus. If I am focused on my daily relationship with him, get humble and open about my failures, and if I serve him with all my heart, he will fulfill the destiny he has for my life! Three Decisions I've Made

2012-10-12 - Prayer of the Righeous - Arms Wide Open (part II) The lost son took his first steps home and was ready to apologize Father perhaps had been scanning the horizon day after day - Luke 15:20 Until one day his dream came true The celebration spared no expense - Luke 15:22-24 He welcomes sinners who do not deserve it - it is how he feels about us Jesus literally opened wide his arms for us on the cross He opens his arms for us all day long - Romans 10:21 Peter, at Pentecost, pleaded with the people to be saved on God's behalf - Acts 2:40 God's heart cares deeply for us His heart was filled with pain during the time of Noah - Genesis 6:6 His heart is in that same way now - Luke 17:26 |
2013-03-21 - Prayer of the Righeous - Knowing God through His Word (part II) Bible Study Disciplines Mark up your Bible in to different themes: Example subjects:
Might circle references to God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit Read the whole Bible every year Foucused study on indivdual books and passages are good but it also important to have the broad picture of God's revelation ingrained in our hearts Read the Bible everyday Jesus lived on every word that came from the mouth of God - Matthew 4:4 Memorize key verses Memorizing scripture helps us to talk to God using quoted scripture (God's language) and keeps us pursuing righteousness

2013-06-25 - Why we need men of resolution (part II) Our relationship with our father is very telling as to why we are and who we are. “What does my dad really think about me?” Lots of fathers don’t realize their vital role. Many issues come from fathers having lost their sense of purpose. Society is guiding boys to remain boys as long as possible— extending childhood into their thirties—while forcing girls to become women long before they are ready. Millions of young men are staying single. They want the privileges and rewards of manhood but only the responsibilities and moral requirements of boys. God has a special place in His heart for two specific groups of people: fatherless children and widows. Dad have good intention but there many things working against them:
Devil will never stop attacking what God prioritizes. |
2013-09-07 - Man of Resposibility When did you become a man? Men are often unsure. Learning this can not only help us understand ourselves better but also help our sons become secure men as well. When Jesus was twelve years old and His parents accidentally left Him After this event, the Scriptures say that He “kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” - Luke 2:52 In the Jewish community today, when a boy reaches puberty (around the age of thirteen)
He may have become a responsible adult earlier than twenty, but by then he had no excuse. God calls us to an appropriate and excellent standard: His. To be a man is to fully own your roles as an adult, husband, father, employee, neighbor, and any other role you choose to undertake. |
2013-09-14 - A Man Functions Independently A man of responsibility is also a man who can live independantly We are not be alone in life, and though we need one another in the body of Christ, if she is constantly nagging you, then you should learn to outpace her concerns. “I’ve already taken care of that” should be often flowing from your lips. We should be more like a thermostat, affecting circumstances, rather than like a thermometer.

2013-09-24 - A Man Recognizes His Accountability Having no accountability always leads to irresponsibility One day we will stand before God one day and be held accountable for how we lived Our actions not only have immediate consequences but eternal ones as well:
This is wired into our consciences and confirmed throughout His Word Everything in a man’s thinking changes when he realizes that he is only one heartbeat from standing before the Lord Do you know for certain where you will spend eternity after you die? Preparing for that day is why we should become accountable to one another Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man - Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 Accountability dynamically helps make us into men - humble, wise, responsible, faithful men. |
2014-05-02 - The Miracle of John's birth Luke 1:13 - Your prayer has been heard A priest’s intercession for the nation undoubtedly included a petition for the Messiah, Israel’s promised Deliverer and King. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe was ready to answer a prayer that had been prayed for hundreds of years, but He purposely chose a man who could pray an old prayer with a fresh heart. The prayer at that exact moment may not have been for a son. Zechariah could not possibly have known was how intimately connected would be his corporate prayer for the Messiah and his personal prayer for a son. Not becoming hopeless over a repetitious request can be terribly challenging. We need to continue to walk faithfully with God even though you are disappointed. Zechariah waited a long time for God’s answer, but when it came, it exceeded everything the priest could have thought or asked. Can you even imagine being told in advance of your child’s conception that he or she would bring joy and delight to you and be great in the sight of the Lord?

2014-12-11 - Genesis 24 - Search for the Bride of Isaac (part III)SummaryRebebekah went back with Eliezer and she married Isaac. ObservationsGenesis 24:49 - Tell me yes or no, then I know what to do next ApplicationThe God should be obvious in our lives. Do people see God in us and if so is it obvious or is there doubt in their mind? In order for me to reach out to others, my life needs to show Jesus. When I speak and invite others to church/Bible study does it come as a surpise or an invitation or extention of what I am already doing? PrayerPray to be real with people and to share my faith without reservation. |
2015-02-28 - Contentment I have learned how to be content with whatever I have - Philippians 4:11-12 Paul didn't learn the value of contentment in a vacuum but through his own difficulties There is nothing like sitting naked, in pain in a bare jail cell to focus your attention on what really matters How does a man of God learn contentment? By being satisfied with whatever provisions God make for him. Paul did not say "I will be content once" but in every situation When we live like this, we will defeat the spiritual enemies of envy, pride, and greed. We will also enjoy what God has already so generously given you Contentment mean living with an attitude of gratitude for all that God has given you |

2015-04-24 - Vows I will give the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me - Judges 11:30 As it would happen, the first to leave his house was Jephthah's daugther The Bible contains hundreds of God's conditional promises of blessings Jephthah's vow went terribiy wrong when he tried to set his own conidtions for blessing rather than appoarching God in faith Have you felt that you needed to offer God something to receive his promised blessing? You can't buy what God already wants to give you. |

2015-10-21 - Grappling with God I will not let you go unless you bless me - Genesis 32:26 When did you last wrestle with God? For most men, the idea of wrestling with God seems a little out there God could have ended the struggle with a single word He dislocated Jacob's hip with a single touch God allowed the wrestling match to go on for one reason: He wanted something from Jacob and for Jacob When you wrestle with God over the important issues of your life, he has you right where he wants you Wrestling is when you are most ready to receive a blessing Are you willing to struggle persistently for answers and blessing from God? |
2015-10-29 - Integrity They are honest and trustworthy men - 2 Kings 22:7 The unnamed men who supervised the restoration of the Temple were so honest that Josiah ordered the high priest to stop keeping accounts of the money they spent to repair God's holy Temple Josiah wrote what amounted to a blank check to get the work done Why? 2015-11-03 - Couldn't Help It Then he went with Elijah as his assistant - 1 Kings 19:21 Elisha couldn't help becoming a prophet of the Lord Elijah approached him and silently threw his cloak over his shoulder, Elisha knew what he meant The Holy Spirit had touched his heart and he felt ready to leave everything to follow Elijah First let me go and kiss my father and mother goodbye - 1 Kings 1:19 Elisha had no choice in the matter, for it was God who had called him to leave everything and follow hi, When the Holy Spirit is allowed to have free reign in your life, you can do nothing but say yes when God calls you to serve Him |

You shall not judge - it is a judgment Elephant parable (world religions are objective vs objective) - may seem persuasive until you get to one question - what the perceptive of the narrator, isn't it an objectiveone? |
