|
2011-07-14 - Mind of Christ - Heavenly Mission (part IX) We must employ at least five elements to accomplish this mission (continued): 3. We must keep our minds fixed on this objective:
As with Jesus, so with us. “Christ’s mission is the only reason for our being on earth; were it not for that, He would take us away” ~ Andrew Murray “A Like Christ” |
2011-07-29 - Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nations Isaiah 40:15 surely same as behold Isaiah is saying "Think of this!" and stop and consider and ponder A bucket of water is something a drop is nothing Imagine going to the grocery store to pick up some fruit Once you go through the checkout line and saying "Please wipe the dust off, I don't want to pay for the dust" The concern seems absurd - that is how God sees the nations This is not to say nations are not imposing on a human level - just shows how infinitely greater God is Isaiah 40:16 - all the cedars in Lebanon would not enough for burnt offering Shifts of 10,000 men at a time were involved in cutting trees and floating to Israel's cost This still was not enough to be worthy of the dignity and greatness of God Isaiah 40:17 - Nation as seen before God:
His greatness no one can fathom - Pslams 145:3 We can never comprehend Him but only bow in awe and adoration before Him |
2011-08-13 - Daughter Needs - Laughter If dads are always working, disciplining, serious, they will have a hard time believing love is sometimes light hearted Older daughters may think silliness is not cool, the key is to have fun Games and siliiness are simply mechanisms to achieve fun and laughter Teach your daughters to take their work and calling seriously - but not themselves Being fun and silly requires a degree of vulnerability that many men and women struggle with Tell jokes but do not poke fun of each other - this is forbidden If you make your daughter cry, you have gone over the line Apologize - don't tell her to stop being too sensitive |
2011-08-31 - Fearing God - Growing in Fear There is no point to a spiritual retreat if it does not affect our lives back home We need to be consistly in awe, reverence, honor, and worship on a high level How do we grow in fearing God? Jeremiah 32:38-41
We need to fan it into flames - 2 Timoty 1:6 The Holy Spirit helps - it is our responsiblity to grow
|
2011-09-04 - Fearing God - Going Deep (part II) Our attitude is the most important thing when it comes to Bible study We need a Teachable spirit Avoid becoming like the Jew who Jesus said to stop thinking you gain eternal life from just reading the scriptures - John 5:39-40 We need a Spirit of dependence Proverbs 2 - We should call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding God has hidden things from the "wise" and revealed them to children Childlike simplicity and humility go hand-in-hand with teachable spirit Self-opinionated are neither dependent nor teachable We need to be diligent Proverbs 2 describes this attitude:
Digging is labor intensive |
2011-09-27 - Proverbs on Advice - Advisors bring victory 2. Advisors bring victory Proverbs 11:14 - For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure Proverbs 25:12 - Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear We all want to succeed; we all want to be winners.

2011-10-03 - Genesis 3 - The Fall of Man SummaryThe serpent deceived the woman; she and Adam ate from the tree. Man blamed woman, woman blamed the serpent. The earth became cursed, and God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden. ObservationsGenesis 3:1 - Did God really say Personal ApplicationI need to be aware of Satan's tricks continuously. He does not want to be noticed. I need to pray and reflect on how I am living my life and find where Satan is getting me to deviate even a fraction of a degree. I need also examine my thought and find out they are out of line with God's Word. I will ask others what they see where I have taken a devour on God's narrow road. |
2011-10-05 - Genesis 5 - Genealogies (part I)SummaryAdam's line was: Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah. Noah's sons were Shem, Ham and Japheth. ObservationsGenesis 5:2 - He created them male and female and blessed them Personal ApplicationThe challenge for me is simple: To finish the race [Acts 20:24] with great faith and perseverance. But not just to get by but to have a relationship with God that shines before others. When people talk about me, do they stop and mention my relationship with God like the Bible does with Enoch? What does God say about my faith? |
2011-10-12 - Genesis 12 - The Call of AbrahamSummaryGod told Abram, "Go. I will make you a great nation. You will be a blessing." In Egypt Abram lied about Sarai and Pharaoh was cursed. ObservationsGenesis 12:1 - Leave your country, your people Personal ApplicationI value comfort but it is not the same comfort that comes from God. When I look at my heart, I am slower to change then I used to be as a younger Christian. This should not be. What is stopping me from changing? Would I being willing to move again for God? |
2011-10-18 - Genesis 18 - Abraham prays for SodomSummaryThree visitors came and said that Sarah would have a son next year. Sodom was very evil; Abraham pleaded with the LORD for the city. ObservationsGenesis 18:14 - Is anything too hard for the LORD? Personal ApplicationI doubt God way too much (once is too much )and I do probably everyday - I am doing it right now. God is god, he can do anything. Yes, even that. I have got to stop making God smaller in my mind. Every time that I think I have an understanding how big and strong he is - God is beyond that. He greater than I can imagine. |
2011-10-28 - Mind Change - Simplicity Be thankful. Laugh. Sing. Trust God. Apply this today. Apply it every day. Yes, even with what is happening today. Don’t let any new development stop you. Proverbs 31:25 - A noble woman can laugh in her days to come Psalms 147:7 - Sing praises to our God John 14:1 - You believe in God - no distress |

2012-01-23 - Ministry - Unless You Change Matthew 18:2-4 Deeply rooted in the mature of adults is a strong sense of resistance to change. Even when we feel deeply discontent with our lives, we are more willing to stay in the familiarity of our misery than to venture into the untested waters of change. Fortunately, Jesus, in his desire to put us out of our misery, makes it clear that for a Christian to make it to heaven we must keep on changing. We must choose to grow even if it is challenging, difficult, tiring, confusing or scary. Why this strong direction? Because there is just so much about our hearts, character, habits, lives that the Lord wants to change! Too many souls will be lost if we stop growing. Jesus gives us the secret to change in the same verse - humble yourself. Thank God we live in a kingdom where the Lord rushes to help the humble. He will send the word, wise advice from a disciple, a protecting angel, and a physical blessing, all to the humble. It seems that we have two choices: Be humbled or get humbled. Questions:

2012-01-25 - Ministry - Jesus' Rescue Mission Matthew 18:10-14 (Luke 15:3-10) It is comforting to know we serve a God who is not only all-powerful and all-knowing, but also all-loving. Sometimes the spiritual battle gets so intense that we wonder if God really cares. This passage proves how deeply God cares about each individual "sheep". How we do spiritually does matter to God. He does not want any of his disciples to wander off and fall away. Jesus is the perfect shepherd who will do whatever it takes to go after the one lost sheep. Each soul matters to God. Jesus' heart is to keep on searching, keep on hoping, and keep on loving until the sheep is found and returns home. We need to take on Jesus' heart and persevere in rescuing those who have given up on their relationship with God. Satan wants us to get hurt, get bitter and angry instead of being compassionate and determined to help those who have lost faith. Let's be inspired by Jesus' unfailing love and decide to be part of Jesus' rescue team! Questions:

2012-01-31 - Ministry - The Burden of Jesus Matthew 11:25 Jesus calls the weary and burdened to Himself and promises rest for them. The rest that He refers to is not to stop working and be idle. He is calling us to give Him the burdens of our souls. He calls us to take his yoke upon us. What is this yoke? The yoke of caring about others. The yoke of humility. It takes far less energy to be humble that it does to be prideful. It is much easier to be gentle than it is to be terse or gruff. Jesus beckons us to learn from Him. Really the yoke of Christ would finally lead him to the cross. That does not seem easy or light. In fact, our purpose to evangelize the world in this generation is neither easy nor light. The attitude that we are called to have is one of humility and gentleness. Questions/Followup:

2012-02-05 - Ministry - Touching Faith Mark 5:24b-34 This woman had been subject to a chronic disorder for 12 years of her life. Imagine for a minute the discouragement, doubt, devastation, and frustration of not being able to see this condition get better. In fact, it just got worse. Have you ever felt defeated about something in your life? Have you ever been discouraged for months about your marriage? Personal fruitfulness? Relationships? Then you can relate to this woman. One of the Satan's deadliest tactics is to keep people from being open about their lives. Sadly, many of us fall into this trap Satan has laid for us and we begin to live "double lives" in the Kingdom. We live a certain way in the world and a certain way at church. For a brief moment in her misery, she decided to have faith and touch him Jesus felt power leave him so he asked "Who touched me?" People stop, some get nervous, some put their heads down, some look at others. Everything is silent. The woman's conscience perhaps was pricked and she had a decision to make. She knew what she did and she knew what the right thing to do was. So she fell to her feet, trembling with fear, she told him the whole truth. But what she thought Jesus would do, he didn't do because he is not like you or me. She learned Jesus wanted to her to be open and tell the truth not because he wanted to scold her, admonish her, or even take the miracle back. He actually wanted to honor her. Question: What doubt or discouragement in your life is holding you back from being 100% sold out to God? Talk to your discipleship partner today about it. Getting "in touch" with it is the first step to change. |
2012-02-07 - Ministry - The Serving Heart of Jesus John 13: 1 - 17 At a time when Jesus could have most concerned about himself and what lay ahead he chose to serve the disciples instead. Jesus was known for his acts of service before God and men. Rather than just telling people what they should do for him and each other Jesus set the example. After he served them he asked them if they understood what he had done for them. Do we really understand the importance of serving? True servitude comes from a childlike heart. Matthew 18: 1 - 9 Children are humble-hearted and love to serve. We need to consider others and look for ways to meet their needs both physically and spiritually. Sin is what stops us from serving. When we are in sin we are serving ourselves: our pleasures and desires. Jesus had a radical attitude toward sin because it keeps us from the spiritual act of serving and into the acts of the sinful nature. When we are serving it is difficult to be selfish, inward focused, prideful, self-righteous, sad and depressed. Jesus experienced great joy by meeting other people's needs. Jesus understood that serving is the true path to greatness. If we desire to be like Jesus we must develop deep convictions in the area of servitude. How did Jesus Serve?

2012-02-13 - Ministry - Are You Willing to Keep Praying? Luke 18:1-8 Jesus tells this parable to show us something. The scriptures even go so far as to tell us exactly what that something is that we should always pray and not give up. Have you ever decided to pray about a specific situation and not stopped until it has changed? What if it took a year to change? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? Jesus says to never give up! Too often we get discouraged and want to quit-even on God-because something doesn't change. Maybe we haven't been fruitful for a while or we don't have a dating relationship yet. Maybe things have not changed in our marriage fast enough or our job situation is still not working out. Maybe we are just not changing our hearts the way we should. The answer is not to give up but to keep on praying. Jesus ends the parable questioning whether there would still be faith on earth when he returns. Our lack of prayer is a sign of a lack of faith! To keep praying and not give up is a sign of great faith. Write down three things you have quit praying about and recommit yourself to be faithful in prayer. Decide to trust. God and be in the kingdom for the long haul-no matter how many decades of prayer it takes!! |
2012-02-18 - Fear of Failure - Letting Problems and Failures Build Your Faith by Tracey Jones, San Francisco Church of Christ Romans 4:18-22; Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 5:1-6 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us--they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us. Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) I think as a non-Christian, I was the most anxious, controlling person in the world. I remember I would have almost every minute of my life planned out from beginning to end. Although it helped me to be disciplined and to achieve goals, it stopped me from letting people into my heart. I was always the strong one to my friends and family…"the rock". They saw all the successful things on the outside, but they didn't see the desperate, feeble person I was inside. When I began to work with people, it was very difficult for me, because I had no control whatsoever over them. That lack of control began to crush me. Now I see that God is using my problems and failures to encourage me to grow. He is telling me the little that I know is not enough - I need to keep growing and changing and developing into the person He wants me to be. One decision I have made when I have problems in my ministry, marriage, or family is to pray about them and to commit them fully to God. Now, instead of giving in to thoughts like “I can't change that woman's heart, I pray specifically about what I need help with and have confident expectation of what God will do. This has brought much more joy to my marriage, ministry, and life. What is stealing your joy? Could it be that you are letting problems and situations dictate your life? Decide today to commit those things to prayer and ask God to give you increasing character to deal with your life. |
2012-02-22 - Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens. 1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21 God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind. 2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8 We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples. Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I. Decisions:

2012-03-01 - Fear of Failure - Heart Failure by Kent Burke - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ Numbers 11 When I see all of the problems in my life and I hear all of the complaints of the people around me, I can quickly lose heart. I do not have the strength to sustain people's hearts. Moses felt the same way when he was faced with all the complaints of the Israelites while wandering in the desert. But when Moses stopped to pray, God took care of all the complaints. We must learn to rely on God's power when we face trials in our lives. Practicals:

2012-08-03 - Genesis 22 - The Offering of IsaacSummaryGod told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. As Abraham obeyed, an angel stopped him. The LORD provided a ram instead and blessed Abraham. ObservationsGenesis 22:2 - Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering Personal ApplicationI know for me I give until it starts to physically hurt, brings up bad memories, or I don't see the need to. It does not depend on me; I need to sacrifice in relation to the need. As I grow close to go God I will see God's heart in this. |
2013-03-18 - Prayer of the Righeous - God is Preparing a Place (part II) John was given a glemce of what heaven would be like in Revelations:
Heaven is a place full of blessings Jesus referred serveral times to our reward in heaven No eyes have seen, no ears have heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared - 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 No one can stop us from going to heaven but ourselves Do you think of God as one who wants nothing more than to bless your life? |
2013-06-25 - Why we need men of resolution (part II) Our relationship with our father is very telling as to why we are and who we are. “What does my dad really think about me?” Lots of fathers don’t realize their vital role. Many issues come from fathers having lost their sense of purpose. Society is guiding boys to remain boys as long as possible— extending childhood into their thirties—while forcing girls to become women long before they are ready. Millions of young men are staying single. They want the privileges and rewards of manhood but only the responsibilities and moral requirements of boys. God has a special place in His heart for two specific groups of people: fatherless children and widows. Dad have good intention but there many things working against them:
Devil will never stop attacking what God prioritizes. |
2013-12-01 - Love Your Wives Love our wives is actually more demanding than the task placed upon wives to “submit” to their husbands. The example God gives husbands to follow is simply the most courageous and sacrificial act ever done in all human history.
|
2014-02-11 - Loss of Heart Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger - Ephesians 6:4 If we lose their hearts, we lose everything. |
2015-02-06 - Racing for the Bottom What do you think you are doing, building a beautiful tomb for yourself - Isaiah 22:16 Some have a "do what ever it takes" attitude toward raising up the ranks Shebna discovered the quickest way to the bottom by using his high position to promote himself God gave him everything he needed to become a great servant but he used it for himself God wants to be the center of all your plans, God gave us gifts to exalt him not ourselves |
2015-02-11 - Lead By Example Everyone must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence - Jonah 3:7-8 The biggest enemy of godly leaders is not leading by example Leading by example has always been one of a leader's greatest goals
Jonah warned the Ninevites of God's coming judgement and wrath Their king responded by instructing his people to:
...in hopes that God would change his minds and spare the city The king of the Ninevites humility and leading by example saved his city from judgement and wrath When you do as you say in life, you make it far easier for everyone around you to do the same |
2015-04-05 - Perfect Servant Unless I wash you, you won't belong to me - John 13:8 Jesus servered to the point of where the Jewish people considered demeaning even to the lowliest servant: He washed their feet Peter's protests were not going to stop him Jesus explained he whad set an example of how they were to treat one another and us too when he had returned to his Father God put us on the earth to server others, even if we do not know them personally Serving is a privilege because it builds up others and gives them to chance to see God's love in action. |
2015-04-10 - Reporting We can not stop telling about what we have seen and heard - Acts 4:20 Peter and John at this point did not have fear about sharing about Jesus
Peter and John spoke respectfully even humbly to the religous authorities who had thrown them into prision They were on a mission to share Jesus and would not allow anything to stop them |
2015-05-11 - Shining Lamp Full of the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God - Acts 7:55 Nothing prompts change likea man's courage in the face of potential personal loss. Stephen had that kind of courage. Religous leaders hoped persecuting Christians would put a stop to this new religious movement, exactly the opposite happened Stephen willingly died for what he believed in and he contributed greatly to the spread of the gospel message At the scene of Stephen's murder stood a young Pharisee named Saul - the same Saul God miraculously converted Stephen's courage and faith in the face of death apparently made a lasting impression Pauls bold preaching would change the world forever - Acts 22:19-20 Lamps do not talk, but they do shine. Is your lamp shining today? |
2015-05-30 - Passion for God's Word He taught others about Jesus with an enthusiastic spirit and with accurcy - Acts 18:25 Apollos loved to teach the Word of God in the synagogues His limitation was he did not fully understand the significance of Jesus' death and resurrection He finally received understanding from Aquila and Priscilla and from then on, Apollos cound not stop He moved to Corinth to be with Paul and some of the believers credited him with starting the church - 1 Corinthians 1 Apollos became a great teacher and preacher because he had the passion for God's Word that all men of God need |
2015-06-26 - Say Something Good We found this man to be a troublemaker who is constantly stirring up riots - Acts 24:5 Bible repeatedly commands believers to use words to build others up rather than tear them down Tertullus was a Jewish advocate before the Roman government and went out of his way to tear others down He wanted to stop all the preaching about Jesus Tertullus accused Paul of disturbing the peace throughout the Roman Empire He intented to have Paul imprisioned or even killed Before you say something about another person, ask yourself if you are tearing down or building up |
2015-07-04 - Infectious Faith Don't be afraid! Go ahead and do what you've said - 1 Kings 17:13 When you speak and demonstrate your faith openly, it is bound to infect others It seemed Elijah was the only man with faith in Israel but he didn't let that stop him speaking God's Word who desparately needed to hear it Drought had led to famine, God sent a woman with little money to feed Elijah didn't allow the lack of wealth affect his faith and persuaded the woman to share what little she had She never again lacked food for herself or her son Faith isn't real unless you put it to work, don't worry about running out - God will give you what you need |
2015-07-13 - God Won't Give You Up With his love, he will calm all your fears - Zephaniah 3:17 Zephaniah understood that God never "cuts his losses" with those who belong to him He approved of reforms but also wanted them to understand they needed changes within themselves In the book of Zephaniah, he:
God still loved his people and wanted more than anything for them to turn back to him God takes sin very seriously and will never look the other way when you fail him. He still will not give up on you |
2015-08-11 - The Spin Amos is hatching a plot against you right - Amos 7:10 In an attempt to quiet Amos and his message, Amaziah accused him of treason against Israel Amzaiah had put his own spin on Amos' words about the death of Jeroboam and Zechariah Some will always attempt to spin the words and actions of godly people and their unpopular message Amos knew he was preaching an unpopular message and Amaziah would go to great lengths to stop him |
2015-08-13 - He Got It He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west - Psalm 103:12 Men who follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly often see more clearly how they have been forgiven David had plenty in his life for which he needed forgiveness He knew when he failed God, God's love would never fail him David did not choose his words randomly If get in a plane and head east and unlimited fuel you never stop heading east - endless love |
2015-09-29 - Childlike Believers Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! - Mark 10:14 Jesus had a heart for children - he treated them with compassion and tenderness It anger him to see his disciples keeping parents from bringing their children to him He used the situation to teach: Anyone who does not recieve the kingdom like a child will never enter it - Mark 10:15
Would you call your faith childlike or childish? |
2015-10-29 - Integrity They are honest and trustworthy men - 2 Kings 22:7 The unnamed men who supervised the restoration of the Temple were so honest that Josiah ordered the high priest to stop keeping accounts of the money they spent to repair God's holy Temple Josiah wrote what amounted to a blank check to get the work done Why? Because they had already proved themselves faithful How do you conduct yourself when no one is watching? When you demonstrate integrity in everything you say and do, you earn the trust of those in authority over you |
