|
2008-10-30 - Man of Prayer - Futile Solutions God has the solution to sin, but man tries to come up with other ones Eastern philosophy - experiencing the oneness of god by escaping the world of material illusion Modern pharisee - do more good Every system has a solution But guilt will ultimately destroy you Some seek to atone by becoming religous or working at humanitarian causes Other punish themselves through drugs to self-hatred, depression, or low-self-esteem These don't work... |
2008-11-10 - Man of Prayer - Final Issues If there was a medicine that could:
It still takes work and self-discipline - Pain = Gain We must translate our desire into action Exercise 3 days a week = too easy to make excuses Exercise 5 days a week = develop a habit 5 days can then become 7 days more easily because it is so ingrained Prayer needs to be everyday |
2008-11-13 - Man of Prayer - Beyond the Basics Nothing we experience in the physical world will ever give us the the joy of our experience in the presence if God David - "In your presence is the fulness of joy" - Psalms 16:11 Fullness of joy is what all men long for Some men have been created with personalities that are very logical and others are oriented to feeling and intuition As our prayer lives develop, we each need to discover what dimensions of prayer are most effective for us |
2008-11-23 - Raising Awesome Kids - Provision and Protection If anyone does not provide for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever - 1 Timothy 5:8 Our families should never have to worry about where the next meal is coming from Our Heavenly Father provides for all our physical needs - Matthew 6:25-34 We should not imitate him in caring for my children? He works his land , will have abundant food - Proverbs 28:19 Get adequate medical insurance - so you do not burden your family will major costs Takes care of things around the house Do the repair jobs and maintenance work Husbands who are lazy - kids will see this and either disrespect us or gladly imitate us in it Fathers are protectors If any family member is in a situation where they are being beaten down, overwhelmed - this is the time to act Should not shield them from the realities of life, but from the forces from which they become helpless |
2008-12-20 - Raising Awesome Kids - Power of Discipline (part 2)
|
2008-12-27 - Raising Awesome Kids - Work Ethic and responsibility Hard work and a sense of responsibility can be trained into a child Laziness is a flaw Sluggard finds nothing at harvest time - Proverbs 20:4 Sluggard says there is a lion road - Proverbs 26:13 Sluggard is a door on hinges - Proverbs 26:14 Stress loving hard work School work is character issue
Instead, make diligence and excellence the issue It helps immensely if the oldest child is well trained Give appropriate jobs and responsibilities around the house
|
2008-12-31 - Raising Awesome Kids - How to Nuture Confidence (part 1) Only proper foundation is their relationship with God Develops confidence without cockiness Stress a relationship with God Focus on character - Tell your children over and over again that heart and attitude matter to God Applaud effort than ability Two of three men were successful because of their efforts not their ability - Matthew 25 Enough openness
Search out your kids strengths - everyone has at least some It is your job to help children discover and succeed in those things |
2009-01-14 - Raising Awesome Kids - Fabric Refers to the building a structure and rhythm into our famiy schedule Mealtimes Stop letting people read the paper, watch TV or do homework during dinner Create family traditions - do things that uniquel to our family |
2009-01-17 - Jesus with People - Humility in Action Jesus and John the Baptizer were very different - ie one preached in the desert and one in the cities and villages John called the people not to focus on him but the one who was coming Jesus came to be baptized by John - Matthew 3:11 John responds - I need to be baptized by you John submits to Jesus' submission and baptizes Jesus Satan hated it - they kept humbling themselves before one another - the bond of unity grew tighter and tighter This humility continued through out their lives - John: He must become greater; I must become less - John 3:27-30 Jesus did not grasp his equality with God - Philippians 2:6 Humility kept them bonded together, even when Satan was working to divide Pride: Keeps people from being united Humility: Bring people together When unity does not exist among believers: People are not willing to pay the price Pride means too much to them What relationship do you have that would be greatly changed if you show humility and not pride? |
2009-01-23 - Jesus with People - Touching the Untouchable Jesus had compassion and healed the man with leprosy - Luke 5:12-18 Jesus was different:
What Jesus did we can also do (beside healing):
Society shrinks back - hospitals are not our favorite place Somehow, we think that the person is responsible for his or her condition Job "friends" did not understand what God was doing How can I imitate Jesus by "reaching out" in compassion to the sick? |
2009-01-26 - Jesus with People - Nic at Night Some people's needs could be quickly dealt with: "Heal my blindness" or "Let me just touch your garment" But not Nicodemus, Jesus knew it would be a long night - John 3:1-3 Nicodemus, was a man looking for something:
Could this be right? Could Jesus be the Messiah? Jesus was straight to the point: I tell you the truth, you must be born again - John 3:3 Nicodemus knew he could get time with Jesus and he did Who was intrumental in answering your questions and healping you see the truth? |
2009-02-09 - Jesus with People - Heart Determined to Persevre Nothing test our determination like opposition Satan is trying to discourage, dissuade, distract, and divide If we get focused on the persecution or persecutors - renders us ineffective and unproductive Pharisees ____ Jesus :
His purpose was not to avoid pain but to please God - John 4:34 Must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day - Luke 13:32-33 God has not called us to defend or protect ourselves - we are then only working for ourselves and not will be doing nothing for God |
2009-02-12 - Jesus with People - The Better Choice Martha and Mary - Luke 18:29-30 Jesus and his disciples were passing through the village when Martha opened her home to them - Luke 10:38 Jesus didn't stop to correct Martha in her preparation Martha - Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work myself? With compassion - Martha, Martha Explained that Mary's choice was right and a lasting one What Jesus wanted most was to see her have a single-minded desire to know him and his teachings Sometimes we get so wrapped up in preparing to server others that we are either too distracted or too exhausted to server them when they arrive |
2009-03-03 - Promises of God - Remember Your Sins No More Remember Your Sins No More - Hebrews 8:12 God wants to forgive God's nature is to forgive Psalms 103:
God doesn't need forgiveness
|
2009-03-19 - Promises of God - For your Good In all things God works for the good of those who love him - Romans 8:28 Regardless of what happened, we must be convicted - God is intimately aware and involved in all of it We have two choices: To trust - brings peace To doubt - brings anxious, temptation to take matters in our hands, sin God is conforming us to the image of his Son - Romans 8:29-30 Examples of those in "bad" circumstances:
|
2009-03-21 - Promises of God - Formidable Foe We have a common enemy that must be overcome Described as:
He blinds the minds of individuals - 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan takes people captive - 2 Timothy 2:26 But there is one greater... |
2009-04-02 - Promises of God - Work That Is Worth It An old criticism of Christians: Too heavenly minded that they are no good on earth Seem to spend so much dreaming of heaven and not working on solving the earth's problems This was never God's idea Prepare your minds for action - 1 Peter 1:13 Setting our minds on the amazing blessings is a powerful encouragement for us to work hard and give our best effort now Is it worth saying "No" to sin? Just consider heaven! Worth it to giving to the poor? Just consider heaven! Worth staying in the race when it gets difficult? Just consider heaven! Worth blood, sweat, tears to help other to know God? Just consider heaven! Your labor in the Lord is not in vain - 1 Corinthians 15:58 |
2009-04-07 - Promises of God - Labor that is in Vain Always give yourself fully to the work of the Lord because your labor in the Lord is not in vain - 1 Corinthians 15:58 Labor that is in vain:
|
2009-04-08 - Promises of God - Tireless Labor Satan works quickly to wear us down Fatigue and discouragement are his greatest tools Do you realize God can give you energy? Luke 17:7-10 and Galatians 6:9 -> gives energy to never quit Focusing on how hard something is will never product the desired fruit Focusing on God and letting others help us product tireless labor Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up his hands Ester needed Mordecai to carry out the plan to save the Israelities Jesus needed Simon to carry his cross God provides helps when we labor tirelessly for him |
2009-04-11 - Promises of God - Satan Tries to Create Doubt Satan uses his energy and his demons to break down our trust in God: Eve in the garden - Genesis 3:1-7 Moses at the burning bush - Exodus 3:1-4:17 Tried it will Jesus in the desert - Luke 4:1-13 Do you really think his strategy with us will be any different? Satan will attempt to get us to doubt God so much that we will trust a stranger more than him Problem is not that we do not know how to trust
|
2009-04-12 - Promises of God - God is Still Faithful You gave into the temptation again, you sinned It is the same one and you have never been able to completely conquer this one area of your life What are your options?
|
2009-04-16 - Promises of God - Never Give Up Never give up - Hebrews 10:35-39 Why?
|
2009-05-03 - No one like him - His dependence on God (part 2) Jesus’ dependency on God: 1. Can not do anything by myself. – opposite is pride
|
2009-05-07 - No one like him - His servant heart (part 2) Many ways to set our mind
Not looking for comfort Not about the way he looked Jesus saw himself as a servant, leading others to be servants How would this thinking change – marriage, family, church, workplace, neighborhood? Jesus was about meeting needs
|
2009-05-18 - No one like him - The Kingdom of God First time God said the time has come Something had come upon us Something within us Kingdom is like:
Kingdom is so different that it requires us to change What does new kingdom person look like?

It is finished a. Foundation of his work was finished7. Into your hands I commit my spirit a. Conforms Jesus unswerving commitment |
2009-06-04 - No one like him - Count Cost (part 1) Not a question of how hard or difficult but if it is true Not all struggling is bad Jesus calls us to:
Jesus was not out of touch – Matthew 9:36 Jesus had a clear view of love and generosity – John 10:33 Kingdom now in the present age Fix our eyes on Jesus We need to deal with OUR heart Jesus did not just come to amaze He came to call people to change their lives He was upfront with commitment level Must deny self |

2009-08-24 - Wild at Heart - A battle to fight Christ draws the enemy out, exposes him for what he is, shames him in front of everyone Nice guy? Egyptians – plagues … Samson – killed a lion with bear hands, stripped thirty Philistines, killed 1,000 men Every man is from a victorious stock He is an original Who are you? Are you bored by him? What impact does he have on others? Are you too nice? Jesus was one with out fear – Did not shrink back but faced things head on - John 18:4-8 Jesus was no paled faced alter boy He commanded the loyalty of dockworkers Will return on a white horse There is something fierce in the heart of God |
2009-09-17 - Wild at Heart - Healing the wound (part 3) Wound unfelt is wound unhealed Door may be your anger – perhaps from a girl, failure The way to God is stopping the false self It may a simple prayer – Jesus, take me into my wound Jesus never seems to heal the same way twice There are no formulas with God Insists on working personally Masculinity is bestowed by masculinity Healing never happens outside of intimacy with Christ It begins with surrender; until you have given yourself to him you will not have a real self …to set you free – What? Your heart So take him at his word – ask him in to heal all the broken places within you But you can’t do this at a distance I simply allow myself to say that the loss of my father mattered Important for us to grieve our wound Grieving we admit the truth, we hurt by someone we loved Few men are ever so vulnerable as to simply let themselves be loved by God Why don’t you just let God love you? The imitate union with Jesus and with his Father is the source of all healing and all our strength Unforgiveness and bitterness can wreck our lives and the lives of others – Ephesians 4:31, Hebrews 12:15 Forgiveness is setting a prisoner free and then discovering the prisoner was you. |
2009-10-10 - Wild at Heart - The Strategy (part 3) 2. Intimidation Our condition may become normal to use after a while - depression If you pray and fight against – It will get worse. Once the Enemy is discovered, he usually does not just roll over and die. Jesus says get tough and resist the onslaught Next level Satan tries intimidation and fear He wants you to agree with intimidation because he fears you Fighting back, he will lose – Resist the devil and he will flee – James 4:7 Why do so many pastor’s kids go off the deep end? Evil One is trying to an old tactic – strike first and maybe the opposition will run He can’t win, you know God is with us “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you” – Joshua 1:5 The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is his name – Exodus 15:3 How did Jesus win the battle against Satan? God was with him Doesn’t simply mean that he’ll be around - he will fight for us Satan is trying to appeal to the traitor’s commitment to self-preservation when he uses fear and intimidation. So as long as we are back in the old story of saving our skin, looking out for Number One, those tactics will work. Become a warrior The most dangerous man on earth is the man who has reckoned with his own death. All men die, few men ever really live. |
2009-10-18 - Wild at Heart - An adventure to live (part 1) A man just won’t be happy until he’s got adventure in his work, in love and in his spiritual life God is intimately personal with us and he speaks in ways that are peculiar to our own quirky hearts – not just through the Bible, but through the whole creation Don’t ask yourself what does the world need. Ask yourself what make you come alive and go do that because what the world needs is people who have come alive I realized I was living a script written for me by someone else To go where the world takes us, to drift with whatever current happens to be running the strongest What would have happened if Moses had listed to his mother’s advice, “never play with matches”? Paul didn’t leave his familiar group of Pharisees? God took a big risk in making the world |
2009-10-24 - Repentance - What It Is (part 1) What is repentance? Repentance is the first word of the gospel Na,,ham = most often used of God’s repentance Shu, b = a physical turning or returning of an object epostrepho = a Greek work similar to Shu, b metanoia = used as the first word in the gospel (change in mind and attitude)
“he came to his senses” – Luke 15:17 “he opened their minds” – Luke 24:45 “open their eyes” – Acts 26:18 “set their minds on things above” – Romans 8:5 |

2009-12-28 - First the Kingdom - At Ease Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth - Matthew 5:5 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace - Psalms 37:11 Meekness is strength under the control of God Being meek is being at ease before God and man One looks outside himself for the power of life Totally open with God, God will work in all things for his good To be meek is not to be afraid... 1. Is at ease with God Someone who worries and has anxiety reduces them to practical atheists A child is at ease with their father/mother (in most cases) I have stilled and quieted my soul; child with mother is my soul within me - Psalms 131:2 2. Is at ease with himself Jesus knew exactly what authority he had been he had been given by God - John 13:3 3. Is at ease with others Neither inferior nor superior No longer deceived by pride, he is free to learn from anyone At ease with God and himself - has nothing to prove and nothing to fear |
2009-12-29 - First the Kingdom - Growing Meekness Cultivating meekness is not some thing you do but a character change Gentleness is a quality of meekness - Galatians 5:22 Meekness follows poverty of spirit and godly sorrow - there are no shortcuts To stay meek you must confront sin and work through it
Jesus was convicted about meekness |
2010-01-07 - Kingdom First - Blessing of Persecution Matthew 5:10-12 - Describes 3 types of blessing that come from persecution: 1. Kingdom of Heaven Testing refines our faith and proves it to be genuine - 1 Peter 1:6-7 Faith, by definition, is all weather 2. Reward in Heaven Because of Christ blood, he keeps no records of wrong He is keeping a record of rights He will not forget your work and the love you have shown him - Hebrews 6:10 3. Prophets before you Persecution and suffering means pain but also means glory Glory - Comes from in realizing we walk in the company of the glorious They endured the exact same things We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses - Hebrews 12 |
2010-01-30 - One Another - Confession Lessons Sin is still a reality - even in Christ God uses relationships to transform us Everyone who seek these relationship will find themselves either being the one sinning or the one being sinned against Christ has freed us to be real We no longer have to prove anything No longer have to pretend or conceal Love of Christ compels us and reminds us and reassures us We should not be shocked or disillusioned when someone confesses Will we look down on others like the Pharisee did in Jesus' parable - Luke 18? Or will we see we all are capable of bad things in need of grace? Sooner we can walk in the light, the better Longer something stays concealed, the more demons of darkness have time to work |
2010-02-21 - One Another - Reconciling with One Another (part 1) Bible is clear - Jesus came to break down divisions - Ephesians 2:14 Worldly divisions
Can ONLY be done at the foot of the cross Only way a holy and righteous God can be reunited with his unrighteous enemy (us) - Romans 5:6-11 Reconcile = to become friends again Not to politely tolerate one another or a ceasefire The goal of Jesus is to be one - John 17:20-21 Only way Jews and non-Jews could form the church of God What Paul had is mind when writing - Ephesians 3:20 "...him who by the power that is working within us is able to do far beyond all that we ask or think" |
2010-02-22 - One Another - Reconciling with One Another (part 2) Biblical Principles of Reconcilation:
|
2010-02-23 - One Another - Reconciling with One Another (part 3) Examples of Conflict in the Bible Euodia and Syntyche - Philippians 4:2-3 1. Conflict happens - normal part of a relationship 2. The goal is to agree 3. We may need help from a third party David and the jealous king Saul - 1 Samuel 24:8-22 David's conduct with Saul was above reproach; He did everything he could to work things out If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people - Romans 12:18 There are things that depend on us and others that are out of our conotrl |
2010-02-28 - One Another - One Another In Groups (part 2) Look for the Spirit's work in all things - 1 Thessalonians 5:6-19 The Spirit is always at work - John 5:17 Guard against the tendency to look at your group through unspiritual eyes God chose the weak things of this world to shame the strong - 1 Corinthians 1:27 Don't just hang those you click with, God wants to teach us through people who are different from us Support spiritual leadership - 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 Ask your leader(s) if he/she feels your support and encouragement - how you can more fully show it |
2010-03-01 - One Another - One Another In Groups (part 3) Work out differences; maintain unity - Ephesians 4:1-7 Do not be surprised when there are differences See differences as:
Need to make the most of every opportunity Avoid lingo and behavior that make the visitor truly feel like an outsider Stay at the foot of the cross What makes a Christian group different from others is the cross Where is your group in regard to the cross? Are we dying and living a baptized life? |
2010-03-09 - To Live is Christ - Whatever Happens Paul set an example for them by facing frustration with faith - lesson for us as well It is not just a good moral life; is is united with each other - standing firm in one spirit Jesus died to bring us together Staying in the fellowship means:
The world needs to see men, women, singles, marrieds, teens, all races, rich and poor brought together as "one man".
|
2010-03-14 - To Live is Christ - Fellow Worker and Soldier Epaphroditus was committed to Paul in the most difficult of circumstances - Philippians 2:25-30 Having a brother to encourage you and not be ashamed of you while in prision meant the world to Paul Great friends are fellow worker - To accomplish a common goal Great friends are fellow soldiers - a common enemy and a common plan to go make disciples Easy to get wrapped up in our own needs If we are selfless in our thinking and actions - do we think we will lose out in some way? Paul was eager to send Epaphroditus - not reluctantly Who we have been so generous? |
2010-03-15 - To Live is Christ - No Confidence in Flesh Paul describes people who do not appreciate what Jesus has done as dogs - Philippians 3:14 There are 2 options to approaching God:
Man, in his pride, is drawn to the performance model Paul refers to the people who acknowledge Jesus as Lord but would not let go of the performance model These people held on to certain Jewish regulation that were made obsolete by Jesus The grace model is revolutionary Seems too easy to be true but too hard for our egos to accept Grace model says:
|
2010-03-16 - To Live is Christ - Profit to Loss If anyone want to talk about 'confidence in the flesh', Paul was ready to take them on - Philippians 3:4-7 Paul used the events in his life to show just how empty all human achievements in before God Heredity reasons (how Paul was more than others but counted them a loss)
If anyone had a right to glory in the flesh, Paul did, but he clearly saw that no one has that right |
2010-03-17 - To Live is Christ - Considered Rubbish Not only did Paul give up his religious past and performance, he gladly counted everything else a loss too He would give up any claim of such things so he could gain justification by grace He considered them rubbish - Philippians 3:8-9 skubala = human waste or dung (KJV) He was saying the same thing as Isaiah - all righteousness acts are like filthy rags - Isaiah 64:6 The good we do is not rubbish but it is if those works are seen as the source and trusted in Our obedience, which is imperfect, does not make us right with God Christ's righteousness saves by faith The message of the cross calls us to sacrifice everything to Christ, who sacrificed everything for us Without his sacrifice, our sacrifice would be worthless to God and to man |
