4-1-3 Discipleship

September 15th, 2014

Have you been reading your Bible daily like we talked about in our last study (Word of God)?

Matthew 28:18-20

  • What does Jesus want everyone to become?
  • Which is more popular term in our society, disciple or christian?
  • Lets look at how the Bible defines a disciple of Jesus

Acts 11:25-26

  • Barabas found Saul and brought him to Antioch. Why? We all need someone to help us
  • They were already disciples but what were they called? Why do you think they were called that?
  • This was about 7 years after God's church had already begun
  • The Bible uses the word "Christian" only three times but uses "disciple" or some form of it over 270 times
  • A disciple is not a label (going to church sometimes) it is who you are - your priorities and time shows who you are

Mark 1:14-20

  • What as the first thing Jesus called Peter to do? Follow me (become a student of him)
  • What as the second thing Jesus called Peter to do? Become a fisher of men
  • What is fisher of men?
  • The key: This is calling not a question
    • 1st - Purpose of a disciple: Follow Jesus
    • 2nd - Mission of a disciple: Fisher of Men
  • Have you had this as your purpose to a student/imitator of Jesus?
  • Have you had this as your mission to be a fisher of men?
  • Are you willing to pay the costs it takes to taught how imitate Jesus and become a fisher of men?
    • Cost is different price for everyone (fear, selfishness, pride, emoitons, feeling, etc)
    • Share your personal cost
    • What could you see one of your cost being as you talk to people about Jesus?

Luke 9:21-27

  • Jesus now explains the cost of being a disciple
    • The cost of denying self. What does that look for you?
    • The cost of carrying the cross. What does that look for you?
    • The cost of following Jesus. What does that look for you?

Luke 9:57-62

  • How much commitment does Jesus want from you? 20%? 50%? 97.3? 100%!
  • These men wanted the blessing of being with Jesus. When Jesus had them count the cost they said NO THANKS.
  • Many give more time commitment to a sports team or the Internet than Jesus

Luke 14:25-33

  • What do you think Jesus is saying with the costs with your family? Love God more than anyone else.
  • Will a king that loses to another king still be a king? No, a servant of the other - that is what we need to become.
  • Question: How do you see your family as a cost? Are you willing to pay that cost?

Mark 10:17-31

  • What was this man's cost? Wealth, money, pride
  • Did Jesus treat him with anger? No, he loved him and was honest with him
  • No matter what your cost, Jesus will provide more than what you gave up

Matthew 28:18-20

  • How much authority does Jesus have? All authority in Heaven and on Earth
  • What does he command (not suggest)? Go make disciples
  • How long will Jesus be with us if we do this? Always
