2-2-3 Sin & Repentance

There are two different people in this story, lets talk about each of them

Simon the Pharisee Sinful Women
Prideful Humble
Judgemental Broken
Critical Convicted by her sin
Disrepectful Serving
People pleasing Determined

As you look at your life over the past years (before we started studying) which person would THE BIBLE say you have been more like?

Hebrews 4:12-13 - The Bible judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart

1 Peter 2:9-10

  • Every person is either in the light or in the darkness
  • There is no gray area
  • Like a light at the end of the tunnel - draws you closer and are not in the light until you leave the tunnel

Isaiah 59:1-2

  • What does inniquites mean?
  • Our sin separates us from God

  • The only way to get into God's light is to break down the wall of sin
  • How do we break down this wall? It takes action from both sides to accomplish this.
    • Our part is to Repent
    • God's part is forgiveness

Romans 3:23-25

  • Everyine has sinned and have fallen short
  • Who is closest to God?
  • What is repentance? Decision and action


 

James 4:17 - Sins of Omission - things we omit (what we don't do but should)

Examples

  • Not helping out or serving when you can
  • Not reading your Bible
  • Not forgiving others
  • Not praying

Galatians 5:16-22 - Sins of Commission - obvious things (what we actually do)

Take some time to do some personal sharing

  • Part of you wants to do wrong
    • Leader shares
    • Another brother/sister shares
    • Personal letter to God (to help identify your sinful nature)
  • Part of you wants to do good

Romans 6:23

  • Wages is what we receive for our work and actions
  • We deserve death but God wants to bless us with eternal life

Matthew 11:28-30

  • Jesus does not want us to carry your load of sin because he knows the load is too much for you
  • Lets look at how the Bible tell us how we can be free of these sins/guilt/shame, etc

John 3:17

  • Must be born of water and spirit
  • What does that make you think of?

Acts 2:22-24

  1. Jesus is from God
  2. Jesus died for your sins
  3. Jesus rose from the dead

Acts 2:36-42

Peter explains what our response should be to Jesus' death

  1. Repent
  2. Be baptized (for forgiveness of your sins)

They were willing to do anything (like the sinful woman) 

Romans 6:1-4

Baptism is not symbolic but instead it's a participation in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ

You are able to go from darkness (sin and guilt) to light (forgiveness, peace)

  1. Write your letter to God (it will really help)
