2010-11-04 - Contagious Christian - The Peter Approach
Peter was ready-aim-fire kind of guy
He was unhesitant and full force
When Jesus ask who he way, he gave an an immediate answer - Matthew 16:15-16
And he later even challenged Jesus' stated mission head on - can you imagine try to correct the Son of God?

He wanted to be close to Jesus no matter what
Tried to walk on water
When enemies came Peter was ready to cut off their heads

He was direct, bold and right to the point
He was a perfect fit for Pentecost in Acts 2 - some one unafraid to take a stand about the crucifixion of Jesus

Some people in the world need a Peter in their lives
They won't come to Christ otherwise - they need someone who won't beat around the bush and helps them clarify/challenge about the truth of Christ

2010-11-20 - Contagious Christian - Breaking Barriers to Belief (part I)
We have got to help people understand that God is not angry or afraid of honest doubt
He warmly invites those with sincere questions to come, to seek, to knock - Matthew 7:7
How different Jesus is from the religious leaders of the world
Jesus told doubting Thomas to touch him - Luke 24:39

We should expect this to happen and respond by emulating Jesus
Clear communication starts with spiritual conversations

1. Poor Examples

This includes those who are religious and are prideful or hypocritical
Some are narrow-minded and pessimistic have condemned anything they don't happen to like

What can be done to remove this barrier?
  • Help them realize that you understand their hesitation
  • Live your life as a model that shatters their stereotypes
  • Help them to see the other authentic Christians so they know you are not the only one

2011-01-16 - Followup - Evangelism Boldness
Matthew 5:13-16 - We must be salt and light
John 4:34 -The harvest is great. Believe it!

True disciples are consumed with making more disciples. - Acts 4:14, 4:20 4:33, 5:14, 5:21, 5:29, 5:41-42, 6:1, 6:7

Sources of Boldness:
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 - The Holy Spirit
  • 2 Corinthians 3:12 - Hope
  • Romans 1:16, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 - Conviction
Acts 4:29-31 – Pray for it

Hindrances to boldness:
  • Pride – being afraid of what others think
  • Small convictions – not seeing people as lost
  • Selfishness – not caring about the lost
  • Faithlessness – doubting that the harvest is great

2011-05-29 - Fearing God - Respect for His Discipline
Do not be afraid, God has come to test you, so that the fear of the God will be with you - Exodus 20:20
Moses draws a contrast between being afraid of God and fearing God
Being afraid of God will lead to distrust and disobedience
Fearing God will keep us from sinning

Live as strangers here in reverent fear - 1 Peter 1:17
Reverent fear meaning a deterrent to disobedience; a motivator for our conduct
In a family situation - children have a healthy respect for their father's discipline but are not afraid to ask for things or play with him
They do not live in dread either physical or emotional abuse

God disciplines those He loves - Hebrews 12:6
God's discipline comes to those he love when they become unrepentant not from failures in a sincere struggle with sin

2011-06-04 - Fearing God - Jacob feared
Jacob had deceived his father and stolen the birthright from his brother

Genesis 28:12-15
While fleeing to his uncle's house, God promised him 5 things:
  • I will give the land to you and your descendants
  • You will spread out to the north, south, east and west
  • People on earth will be blessed through you
  • I am with you and will watch over you
  • I will not leave you
God said nothing in the dream about Jacob's deceitful character, threaten, or punishment

When Jacob awoke, he was afraid
His fear came from the realization that he had somehow been in the very presence of God
The fear was not from being conscious of his sin but from his sense of awe

The presence created a sense of being overwhelmed by his own nothingness in contrast to that which is supreme above all creatures
He is infinitely above the powerful human beings who have ever lived

2011-12-11 - Day 8 - The Hope of Glory
1 Corinthians 15:19

  1. What is the mystery Paul tells us (vs.51)?
  2. Why do we normally fear death - and why should we no longer be afraid of dying?

  2. What should you be thinking about from now on?
  3. What things should you stop thinking about so much?
Application: Think for a while about what heaven will be like. And don't forget to thank God every day for the opportunity to go to heaven!

2011-12-26 - Day 23 - Confessing Sin
Psalms 32:1-7
  1. 1. How do we feel when we are hiding/not confessing sin?
  2. 2. Have you felt this way since your baptism? Are there any sins you have been afraid to confess?
Proverbs 28:13
  1. Can we conceal our sins from God?
  2. Who do we need to confess our sins to besides God?
  3. What effect will unconfessed sin have in our life?
Luke 8:17 - Why is it foolish to try to keep our sins hidden?

Psalms 66:18-19 - What else happens if we conceal or cherish sin?

Application: Take some time to think about any sins - attitudes, action, thoughts - that are troubling you because you haven't shared them. Write them down and make sure you talk about them even today!

2012-01-03 - Day 31 - Dealing with Discouragement
The prophet Elijah had just experienced some tremendous victories from God: The destruction of 450 false prophets, and the first rainfall in 3 ½ years because of his earnest prayer. (See James 5:17-18)

But then he got afraid and discouraged.

1 Kings 19:1-8
  1. Why did Elijah feel so overwhelmed?
  2. What are some things that have made you feel like giving up?
  3. How did the Lord encourage him physically, spiritually and emotionally?
  4. What do you normally do when you start feeling "down"?
  5. How can you apply the 3 lessons from above the next time you are tempted to give in to discouragement?
1 Kings 19:19-21
  1. How do you think Elijah felt to be given a friend and disciple like Elisha?
  2. Why did God wait until Elijah was "in action" again before sending him to Elisha?
Application: How are you dealing with discouragement today? Share what you have learned with someone else.

2012-01-14 - Ministry - Driven By Zeal for God
John 2:12-17; Romans 12:11; Numbers 25:6-13

Jesus faced many challenging situations in the ministry. He faced the overwhelming needs of the sick, the poor, the faithless and the empty but antagonizing religious leaders. He also faced an overwhelming sinful scene at the temple one day. Seeing that the temple worship had become simply a place to make money from others as they were sacrificing animals, Jesus decided to take action! After making a whip, he drove everyone from the temple area, overturning tables and scattering money everywhere! With many rebukes and challenges laid out to the religious
crowd, the disciples thought of one word, "zeal." God blesses us when we take action against sin with our hearts full of zeal! Jesus was not afraid to be driven by zeal! Jesus was not holding back when challenged by sinful situations! He did not ignore, forget, and walk away thinking "tomorrow" or cowardly crumble with fear!

Questions
  • What sinful situations are you holding back on?
  • Have you decided to get so close to God that you would be that disciple making great impact?
  • Do people think of zeal when they think of you?
Decide to be like Jesus and imitate his zealous heart for God!! Have zeal in your prayer, your evangelism and in your attitude today.

2012-01-15 - Ministry - The Generator of Power
John 15:1-7; Mt 7:7-12; Luke 18:1-8

Prayer generates the power in a disciple's life. Without prayer, there is no power, no relationship with God, and no expectation of miracles. Prayer connects us to God's heart and reveals to us God's will. We can be afraid to pray because we think God will test us by not answering our prayers. James chapter 1 tells us that trials test our faith not unanswered prayer. We begin to pray with unbelief in our hearts and no expectation of answered prayer in our minds. God does not always answer when WE want Him to but He will answer. It is up to us to persevere and mature long enough to receive the answer. God desires to give us whatever we wish as long as we remain in relationship with Him. God is a merciful and loving God. He wants to bless us and encourage us. Generations of powerful men and women have walked before us in real relationship with God. They witnessed incredible answers to prayer. God has not changed since then. He is willing to answer; are you willing to pray?

Pray with Passion
Pray with Expectation
Pray with Specificity
Pray with Boldness
Pray with Perseverance

What three things will you pray about until they are answered, no matter how long it takes?

2012-02-01 - Ministry - Intimidated or Inspired?
Matthew 23:1-7

The austere lifestyles of the Pharisees were not ones that Christ wanted us to imitate. They said all the right things and lived in all the wrong ways. People felt burdened around the Pharisees because they knew they could not match up to that kind of lifestyle. The Pharisees were not just legalists; they were separatists, which is what the word Pharisee means. They were men preaching a life too big for them to live. They did not readily inspire the average Jew to follow them. People were afraid of them. They lead by intimidation rather than by inspiration. In vs. 5, Jesus chastises them for doing everything for men to see. In vs.6 he condemns their obsession with position and again in vs. 7, Jesus rebukes their love of role. They did not attract the kind of following that Jesus did and this made them bitter and envious. They did not really have the hearts of the people because they had only a heart for themselves.

Do you call attention to yourself?

Do you focus on your position or your role and get angry when it is not what you want?

A person focused on men, role, or position will not want to serve and therefore will not inspire, only intimidate.

Find some way, even small way, in which you can serve or encourage someone today. This will be an inspiration to them and to you.

2012-02-17 - Fear of Failure - Openness Leads to Success
by Bernard Jones, San Francisco Church of Christ

1 John 1:5-9; Proverbs 28:13

One of my biggest fears as a disciple is being totally open with my life. I am afraid that if people know me they will not want to be around me. For the last two years I have been deceitful about the condition of my marriage, finances, and my life. This has led me to feel discouraged and despondent. Many times I tried to fix the problem by transferring balances on credit cards, discipling myself, etc. I did all this because I didn't want people to see the true me. Being in the ministry can be a temptation to pretend to be someone I am not. One decision I have made is to be completely open about everything that is going on. Like Proverbs 28:13 says, if you are open, you will prosper. Since I have become repentant, I have seen my marriage grow, have been personally fruitful three times, and have a plan to be totally debt free in four years. I have realized that when I am open and real, God can use me to do great things.

Is there anything you haven't been open about?

Make a decision to be open today so God can bring prosperity to your life!

2012-10-03 - Prayer of the Righeous - God is Crawling (part II)
We think he could never accept us just as we are

Peter: Go away from Lord - Luke 5:8
When Jesus started getting too close, he was afraid

Legion: Ran from Jesus when he saw him - Mark 5:6
He was wearing a mask of anger and violence and self-destructive habits to hide the pain inside his hear

We feel too sinful to let him in
Our relationship suffer because we are afraid of rejection because of lack of closeness with God
He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand - Psalms 40:1-2

He is willing to get dirty and and get involved with the real you
Confession and humility you closer
He will not reject you no matter how dirty you are

Are you afraid of rejection to the point of finding it difficult to pray?

2013-01-01 - Prayer of the Righeous - God is a Consuming Fire (part I)

God is a consuming fire who should be feared - Hebrews 12:29

He is God who wants us to love him and not idols - Deuteronomy 4:24

God is a blessed and only Ruler, king of kings and lord of Lords - 1 Timothy 6:15

Our problem is that we think God is like us
My thoughts are not your thoughts - Isaiah 55:8

Societies throughout history have developed their own relgions based off God's which human resemblance:

  • Greek methoology is full of sinful gods
  • Hinduism feature gods who remind of ourselves

Our Father is without blemish or stain
In fact many can say, if God is like my father, I want nothing to do with Him

God appeared to Ezekiel in blazing fire and he fell facedown - Ezekiel 1:27-28
John saw Jesus with eyes of blazing fire and fell at his feet as though he was dead - Revelation 1:14-16T

The paradox of God: He says to not be afraid but at the same time to have a humble, contrite spirit - Isaiah 66:2
When a holy God confronts sinful humans, the only result can be fear and trembling

2013-04-19 - The Strength of Jesus (part II)

The people were ashtonished by Jesus

Who do I you say I am? They had to go to the grave in order to find a man to whom they could liken him

No man in Jesus' day was great enough to convey their idea of strength

Pilot was afraid of Jesus even though He was a poor unarmed peasant

Proof of His power was in the intensity of the hatred and in the intensity of love which he excited

You can not hate a weakling or a no body

He was so mightly that when men thought of him, they thought of God
The man who was nearest to him, saw him in a vsion after he was gone and said, "When I saw him I fell at his feet as dead" - Revelation 1:17

2013-10-09 - Resolve to Lead Your Family

When Moses died, God turned to Joshua and told him it was now his job to lead

He promised him four spiritual resources to help him

  • He gave him God-ordained AUTHORITY to “cross this Jordan - Joshua 1:3
  • He gave him God’s WORD to meditate upon “day and night” - Joshua 1:8
  • He gave him God’s PRESENCE as a reliable companion, guide, and shield - Joshua 1:9
  • He gave him God’s PEOPLE to support and encourage - Joshua 1:16-18

Again and again Joshua heard: “Be strong and courageous!”
God knew that a leader tends to become overwhelmed, afraid, and passive.
Leaders are not leaders because they’re smarter, more talented, or more organized
Leaders take courage by repeatedly step up and use their influence to move others in the right direction.

Leadership is about courage - the courage to trust God, to do the right thing, to stand alone, and to maintain forward momentum

2014-02-24 - Heart Hindrances (part II)

Continuing the “heart hindrances” that will push your chidren away.

  1. Favoritism.
    • Less favored children become resentful.
    • It led Rachel and Leah to fight and Joseph’s brothers to hate him
  2. Hypocrisy.
    • It will kill trust between you and your children
    • Identify hypocrisy in you, be quick to repent
  3. Hurting their mother.
    • They will tend to take up offense for the woman who loves them
    • If you teach them to dishonor her, they will eventually dishonor you
  4. Misunderstanding.
    • Is tied to kids feeling misunderstood and not listened to by their parents
    • If a matter is important to them, it should be important to you
  5. Unrealistic expectations.
    • Kids will quickly be discouraged if they believe their parents have set them up to fail
    • Avoid comparing their weaknesses with another child’s strengths
    • Your child believes he can’t please you, he’ll eventually quit trying

You must keep your radar up to sense if you have your children’s hearts

Questions to continously ask:

  • Have I ever wounded you and not made it right?
  • Have I said one thing and done another?
  • Have I made promises and not kept them?
  • Is there anything you’re angry with me about? Is there anything you’re not telling me because you’re afraid?

Too many men foolishly refuse to apologize because they’re trying to save face and don’t want to look bad.

2015-05-16 - Need Faith?

What do you mean "If I can"? Anything is possible if a person believes - Mark 9:23

At times, we need some assurance before we can take a leap of faith

The unnamed fatherhad seen Jesus' disciples fail miserably at cast ou the eveil spirit and wondered if the Master could do anything for him

Jesus fully intended to heal the boy but first dealt with the man's doubts

Though this may may not had enough faith to completely believe, Jesus could help him

If you want God to do great things in your life, you will need faith; don't be afraid to ask

2015-06-16 - Restored

Jesus' words flashed through Peter's mind and he went away, weeping bitterly - Matthew 26:75

God offers forgiveness for even the worst of sins and the worst of sinners

Peter learned this firsthand

Theories abound as to why Judas' motivation for betraying Jesus, but for Peter it was clear, he was afraid

Judas and Peter both:

  • Failed Jesus miserably
  • Knew immediately they had done wrong
  • Felt the guilt

Two remorseful sinners but only one turned back to the Lord

2015-07-04 - Infectious Faith

Don't be afraid! Go ahead and do what you've said - 1 Kings 17:13

When you speak and demonstrate your faith openly, it is bound to infect others

It seemed Elijah was the only man with faith in Israel but he didn't let that stop him speaking God's Word who desparately needed to hear it

Drought had led to famine, God sent a woman with little money to feed

Elijah didn't allow the lack of wealth affect his faith and persuaded the woman to share what little she had

She never again lacked food for herself or her son

Faith isn't real unless you put it to work, don't worry about running out - God will give you what you need

2015-08-04 - Appearance

Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife - Matthew 1:20

It's hard to imagine Joseph not making some assumptions when his fiancee told him she was pregnant

Joseph onlyknew two things:

  1. Mary was pregnant
  2. He wasn't the father

What would his family think? Would they buy the story? Would he buy his own story?

God saw his heart and knew that he was the right man for the job

As Joseph slept, God confirmed Mary's story and told Joseph to not be afraid to marry her

God allowed Joseph the privilege of caring for the most important child ever born

2015-08-29 - Real Men Do Cry

Then Jesus wept... "See how much he loved him!" - John 11:35-36

Jesus was never afraid to show his emotions

He knew how the saga of Lazarus' death would end that day and the people would winess a spectacular miracle - yet he cried as he approached his firend's tomb

Reason for tears?

  • Felt other pain
  • Death had invaded his friend's lives
  • Disappointment from their lack of faith

Jesus was perfect in love, holiness, and his ability to express emotion

2015-11-10 - Stressed Out?

David was afraid of what King Achish of Gath might do to him. He pretented to be insane - 1 Samuel 21:12-13

Nothing reveals what's inside you quie like a stressfull situation

David fled to Gath become incognito from the murderous King Saul

King Achish's officers were aware of his true identity and David feared for his life and acted insane

Hardly the kind of behavior you would expect from Israel's next king

David allowed his stress rather than his God-inspired courage to rule the day

You may not be able to avoid stressful situations but you can decide for yourself how you'll respond to them

2015-11-11 - Visionary Prayer

His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful - 1 Chronicles 4:9

When we receive a vision for something specific, we are to pray equally specifically

Jabez was an honorable man whose name meant "pain"

Only recorded words was a well-known prayer - "Please be with me in all I do and keep me from all trouble and pain" - 1 Chronicles 4:10

God said yes to everything Jebez asked:

  1. God would bless him - went to the source of all good things
  2. God would expand his territory - wasn't afraid to ask things specifically
  3. God would be with him inall that he did - he knew was heading nowhere without God
  4. God would keep him from all trouble and pain - aka asked for a humble heart and for ability to do right

2016-10-04 - Genesis 26 - Issac (part I)

Summary

In Gerar, Isaac lied about Rebekah being his wife.

Observations

  • The Philistine king emerged as the righteous one
  • God continued to be faithful with Issac for the sake of future generations
  • If Isaac's marriage had ended here, there would have been no Israelites

Application

The first step toward helping children live righteously is for the parent to live rightly. What kind of example I am setting for my children?

Prayer

Please help me to see what I am projecting onto my children by the life I am living

2018-02-12 - Men's Reaction

Different classes of people were attracted to Jesus

Not only did Jesus draw people to him, but he stirred them to the core

  • They were astonishd
  • They were amazed
  • Filled with amazement

Jesus asked "Who do men say that I am?"

They went to the grave in order to find a man to whom they could compare

Pilate was afraid of a poor unarmed peasant

Many hate him, you can't hate a weakling

He was so mighty that when thought of him, they thought of God

2018-04-03 - The Narrowness of Jesus (part I)

To him:

  • certian conceptions of God were true and others were false
  • certain estimates of man were correct and others erroneous
  • certain standards of duty were uplifting and other degrading

Jesus clung to the true and combated the false

He was not afraid of being call intolerant or a bigot

He made no compromises and not bend on thing he knew were true and good

Jesus correct was taught by the teachers, leaders; not allowing them to roam at their will through the realms of thought

Principles were to cling to or else lose their souls
