2010-03-20 - To Live is Christ - Enemies of the Cross The acceptance of Jesus leads to joy and not to be naive - Philippians 3:17-21 Be thankful but still have our eyes wide open The cross stands as a constant reminder of the battle between good and evil Jesus did not just hang out at the cross - HE DIED there because of his enemies And the war goes on To act as though we do could do enough to earn salvation - undermines Jesus' sacrifice To act as though grace is a license for sin - undermines the purpose of the cross - Romans 6:17 Enemies of the cross = people with minds on earthly things Philippians had a unique blessing of having Roman citizenship outside of Rome Our real home country is heaven and our loyalty is to the King of Kings
2010-03-28 - Life to the Full - Crown not Frown (part 2) Poor and rich people need to watch their step - James 1:9-11 Proverbs teach us that the middle way between poor and rich is best - Proverbs 30:7-9 The crown of life is not received quickly nor cheaply - James 1:12 There are too many rationals to go the easy way:
You always find a reason why you can not persevere We are not victims, by God's power we can be victors
2010-04-03 - Life to the Full - Dead or Alive? (part 3) God is just, his laws are just - this should give us great confidence God justice - does not guarantee life will be fair - James himself was executed in 62AD There is quite a difference between compassion and softness - James 2:8-13 The struggles to decide what to do, only God's perfect law can guide us:
Maybe the Ten Commandments? - If so, they would be wrong
A mark of true Christianity is adherence to these two laws Total commitment and total involvement As long these are two commands are the top priority, our focus will not be warped or unbiblical
2010-05-17 - Desire's Journey - The Beast Within Years of living in an indifferent hostile world creates a deep sense of unsettledness with in us Battle of good and evil within us - Romans 7:20-23 Sinful desires are contrary to the Spirit They conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want - Galatians 5:17 There is a nagging awareness warning us not to feel our hunger too deeply or it will undo us We wouldn't want to do anything crazy or desperate We want what our unmet desire wants but our sinful nature wants what is contrary We try everything - TV, sex, relationships, drugs, etc - going one to another We don't know what we want because we're so unacquaninted with our desire We try to keep a safe distance between our daily lives and our heart's desire - because it causes us too much trouble Do we really want to open Pandora's box? Dare we awaken our hears to their true desires? Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all? Our dilemma is this: we can't seem to live with desire, and we can't live without it
2010-05-30 - Desire's Journey - Assault on Desire Battle of desire is not something that just takes place with us or even between us - but against us Advirtisers play on our desire of creating an image that everyone who is anyone has the object for sale The evil one has two ploys:
Our addictions are our own worst enemies Like the rich, young ruler - we find we can not give up our treasures even though God has something much better
2010-07-04 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 1) To know and to be known. It is our deepest ache. Love makes us to crazy things for love. 2010-08-06 - Waking Dead - At War (part 1) The thief comes to only steal, kill, and destroy our life - John 10:10 God intends for you to have life but right now that life is opposed The offer from God is life, but you are going to have to fight for it The enemy in your life has a different agenda We are a war The sooner we come to terms with it, the better hope we have of making it through We live in a combat zone - a violent clash between kingdoms Where did you think all this opposition was coming from? We are in the image of God - Genesis 1:27 God crowd us with glory and honor - Psalms 8:3-5 We were once more than we are now Glory has been the object of a long and brutal was Lurking in the Garden is the enemy Unable to overthrow the Mighty One, he turned his sights on those who bore his image David: You turn my glory into shame - Psalms 4:2 War is a central theme in the Old Testament The Lord is a warrior - Exodus 15:2 OT Battle examples:

2010-08-09 - Waking Dead - The Heart's Eyes Do not lose heart, fix our eyes on what is unseen - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 We are losing heart, all of us, daily Someone was trying to shutdown Paul during his ministry - 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 Life is an illustion - there is a way of looking at life and be able to live from the heart no matter what Jesus spoke in parables to our hearts:
Jesus spoke in a way that will get past all intellectual defenses When you tell a story, you speak to the heart
2010-08-24 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 1) Our destiny is to come fully alive To explain sin, some have gone to the point of saying "I am just a sinner, saved by grace" or "there sure isn't anything good in me" But this is unbibical They point to: "For I know that nothing good lives in me" - Romans 7:18 Notice he says " in my flesh" - there is a difference between the flesh (old heart) and the true you Yes, we battle sin and crucify the flesh but we choose to live from the new heart That sinful nature you battle is not who you are "it is no longer I myself who do it" X 2 - Romans 7:17-18; 20, 22 Paul opens the letter with "Paul, an apostle" not as a sinner You should shine like stars - Philippians 2:15-16 Let your light shine before men - Matthew 5:16 Shame says - "I am nothing to look at. I am not capable of goodness" Humility say - "I bear a glory for sure, but it is a reflected glory"
2010-09-29 - Contagious Christian - People Matter (part 1) We might like the idea of having a spiritual impact on others, we won't take decisive action unless we raise our motivation level The best way to do this is to have God's perspective on the matter 1. The way things are - Science Anthropic principle - when we look at the world around us, the universe was somehow designed to support and nourish human life
We matter to God 2. The way things ought to be - Business Business is turning to the "upside-down" approached They refocus on they are there - to server their customers Focus must be outside the church as well It is easy to get entangled and ensnared in internal issues in our church that it is hard to remember the primary reason we remain on this planet - to reach out to other people If we matter to God, then they'd better matter to us too
2010-11-01 - Contagious Christian - A Matthew Party Like today, many of the religious and non-religious of Matthew's day did not have intersecting social circles Some he planned a party for the religious and non-religious to come to - Luke 5:29

2010-11-17 - Contagious Christian - Making the Message Clear (part II) Christ - Common questions Why couldn't God just forgive and forget, as we can? Like in car accident, God is willing to forgive but someone still has to pay for the damage What kind of justice is there in having Jesus suffer instead of me? God was not a reluctant bystander The difference is that God is will and he is taking his own punishment for you You Many people are left with the impression that if they go to church or they born into a church they are saved Not everyone that calls Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom - Matthew 7:21-23 We have got to be crystal clear that a personal response is essential Do vs Done The difference between religion and Christianity is Do vs Done Religion spells DO - as in we try to do something for God's salvation It is like a salesman that needs to meet a quota but does not know what it is But we can never do enough and will always fall short - Romans 3:23 Christianity spells DONE Means that what we could never do for ourselves, Christ has already done He lived a perfect life we could never live He willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty we owed

God had a radical plan to bring back into a relationship with him and to destroy the power that Satan had over us To this point, most Bible-believing world would agree What about baptism? Marginal matters are not in the Great Commission Paul included in his list of "seven ones" - Ephesians 4:4-6 We are united in baptism with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus - Romans 6 The master deceiver and father of lies has changed the road signs and send many to spiritual dead ends
2010-11-29 - Trusting God - Samuel Preached by Rob Milner Read 1 Samuel 13 Following God's instruction is the key to our success 1 Samuel 10:8 - Go to Gilgal and wait for 7 days and then we will sacrifice Samuel was the judge before their were kings Saul waited for 7 days but did not wait to do the burnt offerings He did not follow God's instructions exactly How long before we stop waiting? Ever wanted to take matters into our own hands? There is nothing as good as trusting and then God fulfilling his promise There are two battles:
James 4:7-8 - God calls us to submit to him fully Trust in God and not your situation

2011-07-22 - Fearing God - Beyond Compare (part II) Another relationship between the fear of the Lord and trusting in him: Psalms 33:19 - The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him and hope in his unfailing love Verse starts out talking about the vanity of trusting in the army, own strength, or even of a horse Why should we trust in him? Proceeding verse tell us His mighty power in creation; His absolute sovereignty over nations As we become convicted of His greatness, we will fear him - stand in awe of him - trust in him We can not separate trust in God from the fear of God We will trust Him only to the extent that we genuinely stand in awe of Him The history of the Hebrews - how poorly they learned to fear Him Psalms 78:32 - Through all the things God did; they did not trust him God works everyday - one way we remind ourselves of his mighty acts is reading the historical sections of the Old Testament

2012-02-04 - Ministry - Pick Up Your Sword Matthew 4:1-11 As Christians we constantly live under spiritual warfare. The battle between Satan and God constantly rages. In this passage we see just a glimpse of one skirmish. Satan attacks with his weapon-temptation, and Jesus responds with his skillfully sharpened sword: the Word of God. In this clash Jesus is able to defeat Satan first because he sees the battle, and second because of his passion to fight it with the scriptures. Question: Do you see the battle? Do you know when you are being tempted, or do the devil's enticements escape you and you easily fall into sin? In these scriptures Jesus teaches us how to fight back. (V.4) When daily temptation and sin come we have to have deep convictions that we need the Bible. (Satan's first temptation was doubt. "If you are the Son of God") Are you tempted to ignore your desperation for God? Are you desperate to be right with God? Are you tempted to skip your quiet times? (V.6-7) Are you tempted to test God? Do you think, "If he doesn't answer this prayer, then I won't pray anymore," or "He didn't do that, so I am leaving." Does bitterness or persecution tempt you? Tempted to doubt the kingdom or the scriptures? Tempted to doubt the only church in the Bible, the salvation of family members, or tempted to ignore certain passages Cling to the truths in the scriptures, they are your most powerful weapons. (V. 8-10) Q: Are you tempted by the world? Tempted by their ease? Their power? Their leisure? Tempted to worship what they do-money, attention, praise, desire? (Ps 73) Write down the temptations you are most susceptible to. Find a scripture passage in your QT that will help you fight back.
2012-02-10 - Ministry - The Shepherd's Touch John 10:1-18 In verse 11 Jesus calls himself the good shepherd and says that the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. A shepherd is protective of his flock and a love for them. True shepherds do not want to lose even one single sheep. They stand between their sheep and danger. They are more concerned for the welfare of their sheep than they are for themselves. They are willing to go without so that their sheep might have their needs met. The sheep are responsive to their master's voice. They trust him because of his heart for them. The world teaches us to look out for ourselves at the expense of others. It teaches us that we are the most important people and that our comfort and security comes first. Finally, the measure of a shepherd's heart for the sheep will come when danger approaches. That is when the heart of the shepherd is the most exposed. Will the shepherd stay and fight and protect or run and hide and let the sheep fend for themselves? What kind of "protective" phone call, card, or visit can you give to someone to keep them tied into the flock? It doesn't take long to do something like this but the result will be everlasting.
2012-10-15 - Prayer of the Righeous - Wiping Away Tears When suffering hits us we can either drop to our knees in prayer or run from God Paul chose to run toward God and saw suffering as an opportunity to rely on God - 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 Suffering is a language God understands Jesus was a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering - Isaiah 53:3 Because of this, he is able to help those who are being tempted - Hebrews 2:18 The gospel is the story of God's suffering He made the world, the world reject him Parable of the Talents tells the story of God's rejection - Matthew 21 When God was only left with the option of sending his Son, he did - Matthew 21:35-37 We murdered him and understood what it meant to not be whole Because God has given men freedom to choose, there is suffering on earth When we suffer, we have a chance to draw closer to God There is unique bond between those who are suffering and comforter - Matthew 5:4
2012-10-29 - The Lost Life of the Heart Our years can be consumed with service and business But somewhere out there someone is saying, "There is something more" We just assume it is our imagination Then it speaks again, "Aren't you thirsty? There is something missing" This feeling might feel disloyal to our routine and against the program we are following We try to silence the voice with outward activity and redoubling our Christian service You long to be in a love affair, an adventure with God. You were made for something more. Samuel heard the voice of God calling to him in the night - 1 Samuel 3:4 It took him three time before he realized it was God Rather than ignoring the voice, Samuel finally listed In our lives, we can become frustrated by our heart's continuing sabotage of a dutiful Christian life But sometime at night, when our defenses are down, we still hear him calling us In the morning, activities scream for our attention and think we have won the battle of the "flesh" Satan loves to turn the truth upside down We try to lose ourselves in:
We create distance between ourselves and others; even distance between ourselves and our own heart...
2014-02-24 - Heart Hindrances (part II) Continuing the “heart hindrances” that will push your chidren away.

2014-05-15 - Genesis 23 - The Death of SarahSummarySarah died in Kiriath-arba and Abraham asked the Hittites for a burial site. He bought a cave at full price from Ephron and buried Sarah there. ObservationsGenesis 23:6 - Listen, my lord, you are an honored prince ApplicationWhat kind of reputation do I have at work, at home, and at church? What do others say about me? How has that helped or hindered me? Do I become impatient in waiting for God's promises? Do I try to fulfill God's promises for him? Do we avoid giving when it really costs us something? PrayerLord, help me to have the faith to wait on your promises and to always be ambassador of yours no matter where I am.
2015-03-03 - Staying within Reach The king paid no attention to the people - 2 Chronicles 10:35 Rehoboam (King Solomon's son) paid no attention to the people God had put in his life to direct and guide him Their advice: "Lighten up on the people or there is going to be trouble" Instead of heeding and applying this counsel, Rehoboam sought out younger, less experienced men to be his advisors The king appointed advisors told him to tell the people "If you think my father was tough, just wait" This resulted in all-out hostility between the northern and southern parts of Israel What experienced and proven couselors do you have in your life? Do you listen to them? Do you prefer their counsel?
2015-03-22 - Show Compassion Jesus: He sent them out to tell everyone about the kigdom of God and to heal the sick - Luke 9:1-2 He didn't just want them to just show people the good news of salvation but also to tell them about it as well Jesus was the example of the One who struck a perfect balance between good works and effective words He spoke the message that fueled his acts of compassion That same message - people need today to both see and hear! What compassion or help do people around you need the most? What good news do they need to hear?
2015-04-06 - Confidence How much longer will you waver between two opinions - 1 Kings 18:20-21 Elijah demonstrated that kind of confidence in hos heavenly Father when he challenged 450 priest of Baal to match the power of the true and living God When he had seen the sad spectacle of Baal's priest, he called on God to remind the people who he was Elijah never had a doubt about what would happen next Place your complete confidence in the one true God
2015-08-20 - Balanced Approach You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing youe unfailing love - Micah 7:18 The Bible is largely a book about finding balance - between God's hattred for sin and his desire to completely forgive the sinner Micah understood this balance Challenges:
Opportunites:

2015-09-07 - Breaking Barriers We are akk here waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you - Acts 10:33 People tend to honor those who first do something of note Roman military officer Cornelius broke a few barriers of his own when place his faith in Jesus When Peter visited Cornelius, the apostle explained everything to him and he accepted his words They saw that God intended salvation through Jesus for the Jews and Gentiles - Acts 10:44-45 Jesus' death and resurrection broken down the long standing barrier between God and man and between the Jews and Gentiles
2015-09-08 - Conflict Resolution Let's not allow this conflict to come between us - Genesis 13:8 The ability to resolve conflict is an important people skill for any man to have A conflict arose when Abram's and Lot's herdsmen began to argue among themselves Abram took the first step by recongnizing the problem and talking to Lot about it The second step was to offer Lot the choice of whatever portion of land he wanted Abram gave Lot the first choice of land because he was more concerned with maintaining a good relationship than his wealth Abram knew God would continue to bless him no matter where he settled
2015-11-01 - Secure in Love I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love - Romans 8:38 Through difficult times we are tempted to think God must really hate me Some have the misguided idea of the relationship between difficulties and God's love Paul opposed such thinking through his suffering that most of us can not imagine He never saw his suffering as an occasion to doubt God's love for him Can anything ever separate us?
No! Despite these things overwhelming victory is ours through Christ - Romans 8:37
2015-11-24 - God's Approval May the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful - Psalms 90:1 The formula for failure is trying to please everyone Lasting blessing comes when you make pleasing God and seeking his approval your focus In Psalms 90, Moses wrote while in the wilderness, plainly about the consequences of their stubbornness and disobedience Most of those who left Egypt would never see the Promise Land but still found hope understanding the connection between willing obedience and divine blessing Life is far too short and God's blessing to wonderful to miss anything he wants to give you
2015-12-19 - Enemy of Self Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan - Judges 13:24-25 The man who learns to put himself aside is the one who makes a difference for God's kingdom From the time Samson was a boy, the Spirit began to stir within him That is when self got in the way Something went wrong between God's Spirit and Samson Samson didn't use the gifts of God had given him as a leader and deliever God called him to be He used his gifts for his own agenda:

2018-04-06 - The Narrowness of Jesus - Focus (part III) We try to give to many causes and the result is we have little joy in our giving Not only was Jesus joyful but he was mighty He stayed in Palestine and kept his heart close to a few chosen hearts - became increasingly influential He made himself mighty by limiting himself The difference between a mighty river and a swap is the river has banks (boundries) What is success? It is to do the thing we were created to do He was only 33 years old - yet he did the greatest piece of work ever accoumplished on the earth The "fine" in fine arts is the because of the limitations which they impose
2024-01-15 - Intro (part IV) Included in the greatest commandment is: love the Lord with all of your MIND Belief is both a matter of faith but also of will Sometimes we just want things to be true - this could be said for both Christian (something to rely on) and non-believer (changes in life required) There is a difference between proving and accepting Christianity The point of open mindedness is to find the truth when it comes along; God has given us enough evidence to see him without comprising our faith or our free will |
