2008-03-22 - Be Still My Soul - The Pattern (Part 2)

Our Father.

We are longer slave but sons ans daughters
We can approach him with confidence because of Jesus

In heaven.

With Jesus as the high priest, we can confidence to enter the into the throne room of God
Can gain a heavenly perspective
Praise God that his resources there are limitless

Hallowed be your name.

Being holy, set apart, above us
Prayer is not just asking for something but for honoring Him

Your kingdom come.

Kingdom has not come to every nation and place nor every person
Pray for God to open doors, speaking boldly, with wisdom
Pray for those who server and in leading roles

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

God wants us to pray about surrendering to his will
Challenges is our life must not be avoided but have a surrendered life
Read some command and ask yourself if you are following them
Jesus never asked for strength to go to the cross but only that he might surrender
Besides pride and rebellion, unbelief keeps us from doing God's will

Give us today our daily bread.

Bring specific needs to God
Must depend on God daily for our spiritual and physical needs
Pray thorough your todo list and details
Jesus said we could do nothing apart from God - John 15:5

Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.

Lack of confession results in a hardened heart
We will not mature if do not do this soul searching
Be specific; ask others for forgiveness if needed
Extend forgiveness; can not be forgiven by God otherwise

And lead us not into temptation.

What are your weaknesses? Have you faced them?
Draw on God's power before Satan strikes

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Return again to praising and glorifying God
All power rests in his hand

"This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ" - Acts 17:3
Testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ - Acts 18:1-5

God's Christ was not confined to mere 33 years
By him all things were created - 1 Colossians 1:16-20

Sometimes we forgot - The Christ still lives today

2008-05-02 - Power of Spiritual Thinking - Forgiveness, part 2

1 Peter 2:18

Our first response to others must having nothing to do with how they treat us; love is unconditional
Our response to those who mistreat us must be based on the example of Jesus
Our response when we are hurt is to think how to extend an opportunity of repentance and forgiveness
The more we suffer with grace and mercy toward our offender, the more they are drawn to God

1 Peter 3:8-9

Taking up our cross means we suffer at the hands of others without retaliation and with repect
Offenders will be melted by our gentleness and hopefully
Even if no repetance, they at least have an opportunity to repent

Taking the way of the cross accomplishes:

Refines our character, making us more like Jesus
Works on those who sin against us by bringing them to repentance
The greater the hurt forgiven, the greater the impact of the one forgiven

Mathew 23:37 - Talks about how Jerusalem killed the prophets and those God has sent to them

Disappointed people are not happy people

Disappointed = depressed or discouraged by the failures of one's hopes
Disappointment in others exposes a basic selfishness; by definition is rather self-focused

Most assume that God often views us with a disappointed heart
Luke 19:41-42 (parallel verse to Matthew 23:37) - If you only had known on this day what would bring you peace

Are you often disappointed in yourself or others?
Humility is needed - Selfishness and pride is the opposite

Disappointed often? Selfish often!
Frustrated at others often? Selfish often!
Angry when others have things against you? Selfish once more!

Look not to your own interest, but the interest of others - Philippians 2:3-4

Disappointment is un-Godlike; Concern is the godly quality which comes from self-denial and agape love

Church with one only one race stand in stark contrast to the early church

Rich and poor
Educated and uneducated
Young and old
Black, Asian, Hispanics and white

Only God could bring such a group together in love and harmony
Our unity is a demonstration of true disciples - John 13:34-35; 17:20-23

Being Color-blinded is an absence of prejudice
Color-appreciative is making us a family

The ultimate goal is to give glory to God

God's glory = the expression of his goodness and all his other eternal qualities
Through history, God has revealed his glory
God's glory is best seen in Jesus Christ

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23
I have created them to bring me glory - Isaiah 43:7
Jesus brought glory to God by doing everthing he was told to do by God - John 17:4

We bring God glory by worshiping him - Use your body to the glory of God - Romans 6:13
We bring God glory by loving other believers - Accept others as Christ accepted you - Romans 15:7
We bring God glory by becoming like Christ - We become more and more like him, reflect his glory even more - 2 Corthinians 3:18
We bring God glory by serving others our gifts - Do it all with all that God has given you - 1 Peter 4:10-11
We bring God glory by telling others about him - Bringing people to Christ through his grace, God receives more and more glory - 2 Corinthians 4:14

Giving glory to God will require us to change our priorities, schedule, relationships, and everything else

You are planned for God's pleasure
He chose to create you for his enjoyment
Bringing enjoyment to God is the first purpose in life
He considers valuable enough to keep you for eternity with him

Bringing pleasure to God is called worship
Anything you do that brings pleasure to God is an act of worship to God
Worship is a universal urge - if not worshiping God, it will be something
Worship is not for your benefit, not "I got a lot out of it"

Worship is far more than music
Worship music is not limited to a particular style of music - nothing to do with volume or speed of the song
Style of the music says more about you than it does God

Worship is not a part of your life, it is your life
Every activity can be transformed into an act of worship
Whether you drink or eat or whatever... do it all for the glory of God- 1 Corinthians 10:31

Invest in the future (in heaven)

Passover - it meant freedom for the Jews (from Egypt)
Jesus choose Passover to bring freedom to all through his death

It was a new relationship with God and man
God loved mankind but man hurt God with his sin

Jesus: with my life and death, you have a new relationship, now remember this
It will be forgotten in our lives if we don't make plans to remember

In the midst of our activities and pressure of life, we forget:

How much he went through for us
That we can be forgiven and start over again and again
Why we are doing things we are doing

He took bread and gave thanks for this very reason - Luke 22:19

Give thanks and examine yourself - 1 Corinthians 11:28
Don't forget that in Christ there is no condemnation - Romans 8:1

Voluntary surrender is not easy; never comfortable nor enjoyable
Christ can not be formed in us until we are crucified with him - Galatians 2:20 ; Galatians 4:19

Rebellion comes from man's desire to be God
Satan tried to delute the solution to create powerless religions
Our lives do not change at the deepest level and have the same problems as the world

Only when we are sick of our old nature will we be convinced to totally sell out to God
Death to self seems preferable to life

Most of our cires are designed to produce our surrender
Jesus served through suffering - Hebrews 5:8-9
Can not mature without surrender - Hebrews 12:5-11
Many harships come so we enter heaven - Acts 14:22

So how do we go about taking up our cross?

Absolutely commited to the concept - John 12:23-25
Be committed to prayer about surrender - "I surrender" and "Help my lack of suddender"
Be committed to a relationship with another disciple - Share convictions and be open
Be committed to stretching your comfort zone - Do things you can not do without his help
Realize that surrender brings about absolute freedom - life through death will cease the puzzling paradox

2008-08-17 - 30 Days at the Cross - Do not Come Down!

Jesus was tempted with the words, "save yourself, come down from the cross
If they understood the eternal significance of the moment, they would have cried "No, Jesus! Do not come down!"

Jesus was tempted:

Simply save himself and let everyone fend for themselves
Come down in hope that they would believe
Settle on improving their lives but not saving them

What kept him up there?

Jesus also loved the world that he gave his only life - Love
He cared deeply for others
He knew he could bring salvation to many

Our mission is the same (Luke 9:23) - must deny self and lose our life for others
We must quit looking for some new,easy approach and decide to love

The world is screaming out: "Save yourself! Come down from the cross!"

Jesus came to turn the tables on Satan
He came to deal with the greatest of all questions and fears - death

He spoke about it in great length - John 5:21-30
He claimed to be the only solution for death - John 6:53-57
He raised the dead - John 11
He believed his death would bring others life - John 12:23-25

When he died, almost everyone thought evil won

Satan pulled out all the stops.
Jesus was in his deadly sights at all times - waiting for a bad day

7 moves to turn the tables:

Pray - he is listening - Hebrews 5:7
Read - he is speaking - Luke 4:1-13
Believe - he is able - Hebrews 2:18
Trust - he is willing - Hebrews 4:15
Fight - he knows what you can bear - 1 Corinthians 10:13
Seek - he has provided a way out - 1 Corinthians 10:13
Find - he gives grace in time of need - Hebrews 4:16

Jesus death turned the tables on Satan

2008-10-13 - Man of Prayer - YHWH-shalom

Means "the Lord is peace"

Gideon had a powerful encounter with the angel of the Lord - Gave the name at the alter - Judges 6:24

Hebrew word shalom = welling being, contentment, harmony, fulfillment, and wholeness.
It communicates a total state of well-being which comes from a proper relationship with God

The blessing of God brings the peace of God
He is the source of your peace - Ephesians 2:14
Peace is the result of God's Spirit working in your life - Galatians 5:22

2008-10-17 - Man of Prayer - Kingdom and Prayer

Thy kingdom come and your will be done - their is a nowness (call of God to intervene in our lives)

Our intercessions remain focused on His kingdom and his will - His kingdom first

God influences situation - we should expect that will happen:

Act 12

Peter was arrested and thrown into jail
Church's response was to pray for divine intervention
- Not comfort
- Not for Peter to accept his circumstances
The church prayed earnestly
God answered - a direct response to their prayers
They did not believe Peter was at the door - we are like this

Peter get jailed, they prayed, God brings him back to life

2008-10-20 - Man of Prayer - Praying for the church leaders

Should pray for the influence and empowerment of the leadership in the church (full-time staff and elders)

They are the primary targets in the spiritual war
If Satan can effectively compromise the the leadership in the church, he may keep believers from being effective

The more a leader brings to the truth of God to the church, the more problems surface
Actually creates greater demand on the staff - pray for refreshment and protection

Pray for leaders to experience:

protection
fruitfulness
effectiveness
faithfulness

Don't forget to pray for their families also, since they usually a prime target for Satan too

Part of prayer needs to be focused on remembering who has offended us and then making a conscious decision to forgive them

When our sin has caused emotional, spiritual, or physical damage to another - we need restitution - asking forgiveness

Forgiveness:

Brings into our experience not only love and grace of God but transforming power
Provides us with the guidance, motivation, enabling power to reconcile our relationships with God and others
Enables us to live with the experience of inner cleaning and the peace of God

He who spares the rod hates his son - Proverbs 13:24

Message is clear - Spanking is vaild, employed with wisdom and love

Spanking should be an event
Explain beforehand the reason for the spanking
Cool off before spanking a child - must be complete self-control and not retaliatory
Use a designate paddle - do not hand spank - too personal
Spanking must result in change, contrite heart
Bring things to resolution
Do not spank for every offence - children in elementary years, spanking is less appropriate
Spank on the safe backside or thigh
Start as soon as the child begins to understand the word no; about 14 months
