2010-01-09 - Kingdom First - Light Drives Satan Away God is light; in him there is no darkness at all - 1 John 1:5 Satan can not be where there is light When the light comes, sin is exposed The light will bring a reaction:
The light takes away Satan's power The more we open ourselves to God's light, the more his light shines through us |
2010-01-30 - One Another - Confession Lessons Sin is still a reality - even in Christ God uses relationships to transform us Everyone who seek these relationship will find themselves either being the one sinning or the one being sinned against Christ has freed us to be real We no longer have to prove anything No longer have to pretend or conceal Love of Christ compels us and reminds us and reassures us We should not be shocked or disillusioned when someone confesses Will we look down on others like the Pharisee did in Jesus' parable - Luke 18? Or will we see we all are capable of bad things in need of grace? Sooner we can walk in the light, the better Longer something stays concealed, the more demons of darkness have time to work |
2010-02-06 - First the Kingdom - One-Lane Road (part 1) Seemingly contradictory statements: God wants all men be saved - 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Road to God is narrow and only a few will find it - Matthew 7:13-14 Both are true God shows he wants all me to be saved He sent his son who spoke clearly and plainly about what it takes The broad road says - I know better than God what life and eternity are all about On the broad road - so many people and so many standards Bible warns those on the broad road will face terrors and traps of many kinds - Proverbs 4:10-19 Many agree that the narrow road teaching Jesus describes is one of the most difficult Can not be faithful to Jesus' message and teach anything but the narrow road Only a few find = fact is that only a few search Everyone who seeks finds - Matthew 7:7-8 |
2010-03-12 - To Live is Christ - Every Tongue Confess Jesus Christ is Lord Whoever disowns Jesus before men, he will disown him - Matthew 10:32-33 No one comes to the Father except through Jesus - John 14:6 Give up for God = Gain Bow when:
Each disciple must decide that he or she lives among other "for their sake" - 1 Thessalonians 1:5

2010-05-13 - Desire's Journey - Same Old Thing Something worse than the fall of man (losing paradise) = getting used to it
We have not solved the riddle of our existence Everyone else seems to be getting on with things. What is wrong with me? It is possible to run away from the desire for years but we are desire - essence of the human soul Our desire, if we listen, will save us from committing soul-suicide Same old thing would not be enough Life as usual us not the life we truly want It is not the life we were made for "All good things come to an end" is a lie We abandon the most important journey of our lives when we abandon desire Whatever we might gain, it is not worth it - Matthew 16:26 |
2010-05-28 - Desire's Journey - Hopeless without Desire Peter tell us to be ready to give the reason for the hope that everyone one is asking us about - 1 Peter 3:15 When was the last time someone stopped you to ask about your hope? Is there nothing about our lives that is worth asking about? Our hopes are deeply tied to our real desires Killing desire has meant a hopeless life for too many People aren't exactly ripping the roofs of churches to get inside The enemies ploy:
Danger is not desire but disowning desire |
2010-05-30 - Desire's Journey - Assault on Desire Battle of desire is not something that just takes place with us or even between us - but against us Advirtisers play on our desire of creating an image that everyone who is anyone has the object for sale The evil one has two ploys:
Our addictions are our own worst enemies Like the rich, young ruler - we find we can not give up our treasures even though God has something much better |
2010-06-14 - I need to pray (part 1) Preached on 2002-08-25 by Vince Hawkins Ephesians 3:14-21

|
2010-08-26 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 3) You are going to the need your whole heart - so you will need every ounce of courage and faith as well James and John, sons of Zebedee did hide what they thought
He can see clearly who they really are We many times spend our time hiding through false selfs Like Adam and Eve did with fig leaves We make up a glory because we are convinced we have none of our own Must ask: God, who am I? What do you think of me? What is my real name? The deeper reason we fear our own glory is that once we let others see the truest us - aka nakedness It is awkward when everyone else is veiled Living from your glory is the only way to live You cannot love another person from a false self You can not help others if you are in captivity yourself Our deepest fear of all - we will have to live from our hearts Means we do not know the next thing God will ask of us |
2010-09-24 - Waking Dead - It Will Be Messy Going to a church service with hundreds of people will never expose you That is what most prefer - because community will It will bring you close and you will be seen and you will be known Therein lies the power and the danger The enemy hates this: he knows it can be powerful and God and his kingdom Remember divide and conquer? This is his way Most have settled for safety in numbers - a comfortable, anonymous distance An army that keeps meeting for briefings, but never breaks into platoons and goes to war Community is like camping together Stuff is scattered out there for everyone to see During fellowship there are two important things to remember 1. Know the heart is good - so much easier to trust and to forgive We are for one another 2. Know that we are at war The enemy is always trying to pull everyone away |
2010-10-10 - Contagious Christian - Pull of Compassion Caring for the tangible needs of others is at the core of Christianity Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless - look at orphans and widows in their distress - James 1:27 Compassion is echoed throughout the Bible:
Clear and consistent demonstration of Christ-like love is a powerful magnet that pulls people toward Him Not about who you are or what you did It is about how you care, being a neighbor - Luke 10:36-37 In Luke 10 - when the wounded man awoke, he must have wondered, "Who did this? Why would they do help me in such a great way?" It is when people start asking, "Why didn't he not turn away like everyone else?" As I have loved you, so you must love one another - John 13:34-35 All men will know that you are my disciples |

2010-11-01 - Contagious Christian - A Matthew Party Like today, many of the religious and non-religious of Matthew's day did not have intersecting social circles Some he planned a party for the religious and non-religious to come to - Luke 5:29

2010-11-16 - Contagious Christian - Making the Message Clear (part I) Before you can bring the message to others, need to make sure we clearly understand we understand the message ourselves Making the message clear will need us to be able to illustrate it for those we talk to God Three aspects of God we need to look at:
God made us without sin but we abused our freedom and became evil Sin requires God to pronounce upon us the death penalty - both physical and spiritual This is separation from God via hell We are helpless to change this Christ God had the power and authority to devise a plan for our salvation Christ died and suffered the death penalty debt for us and
You don't deserve it, we didn't pay for it, we can not earn it He paid a debt He did not owe I owned a debt I could not pay |
2010-11-17 - Contagious Christian - Making the Message Clear (part II) Christ - Common questions Why couldn't God just forgive and forget, as we can? Like in car accident, God is willing to forgive but someone still has to pay for the damage What kind of justice is there in having Jesus suffer instead of me? God was not a reluctant bystander The difference is that God is will and he is taking his own punishment for you You Many people are left with the impression that if they go to church or they born into a church they are saved Not everyone that calls Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom - Matthew 7:21-23 We have got to be crystal clear that a personal response is essential Do vs Done The difference between religion and Christianity is Do vs Done Religion spells DO - as in we try to do something for God's salvation It is like a salesman that needs to meet a quota but does not know what it is But we can never do enough and will always fall short - Romans 3:23 Christianity spells DONE Means that what we could never do for ourselves, Christ has already done He lived a perfect life we could never live He willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty we owed |
2010-11-19 - Contagious Christian - Making the Message Clear (part IV) Another illustration similar to the bridge analogy... Baseball Illustration If one wants to enter the All-Universe Hall must meet the following requirements for 5 years
To earn your salvation, you must do something similar - Romans 3:23 One missed law is guilty of breaking all of the laws - James 2:10 We need Jesus' sacrifice to reach God |
2010-12-06 - Mission - John's Walk with Jesus What disciples does not like the apostle John, the "apostle of love"? Not everyone
John stayed close to Jesus - Luke 9:28 He would never quit Jesus - Mark 14:32-34 John loved Jesus until the end - John 19:25-27 John changed:
How is our walk with Jesus? Do we focus our energy on our walk with Jesus? Only after walking with Jesus, can we change into the disciple Jesus' wants us to be |

2011-08-05 - Daughter Needs - Father Knows Best Father Knows Best dad = insists on always being right Only accepts his daughter when she performs to his standard Everyone needs to learn how to live and work under authority and need to command a certain level of respect, but sometimes we are wrong We need to own up to our own shortcomings If we ignore or deny our mistakes - it will create bitterness A father who refuses to admit their mistakes has a daughter that does not trust him How can can she rely on your advice Your reliability is increased when you admit your mistakes A strong man admits and corrects his mistakes If you want your daughter to believe in her father, show her you know best and own your behavior |

2012-01-14 - Ministry - Driven By Zeal for God John 2:12-17; Romans 12:11; Numbers 25:6-13 Jesus faced many challenging situations in the ministry. He faced the overwhelming needs of the sick, the poor, the faithless and the empty but antagonizing religious leaders. He also faced an overwhelming sinful scene at the temple one day. Seeing that the temple worship had become simply a place to make money from others as they were sacrificing animals, Jesus decided to take action! After making a whip, he drove everyone from the temple area, overturning tables and scattering money everywhere! With many rebukes and challenges laid out to the religious crowd, the disciples thought of one word, "zeal." God blesses us when we take action against sin with our hearts full of zeal! Jesus was not afraid to be driven by zeal! Jesus was not holding back when challenged by sinful situations! He did not ignore, forget, and walk away thinking "tomorrow" or cowardly crumble with fear! 2012-01-17 - Ministry - The Heart of Gratitude Luke 17:11-19, Psalms 100:4, 1 Thessalonians. 5:18 Jesus believed that if the heart of a man was healed and doing well, then that individual could really experience a complete healing from God. In Mark 2 the paralytic who was lowered through the roof by his friends in the middle of a crowded house for Jesus to heal did not hear the first words from the lips of Jesus, 'you are healed.' The first thing he heard was, "Your sins are forgiven." The obvious problem to everyone was his physical condition, yet Jesus saw the spiritual issues of the man's life and healed them first! The ten lepers came to Jesus and when he cleansed them only one came back, throwing himself at the feet of Jesus, overwhelmed with gratitude! Jesus wondered where the other nine were, but proclaimed to the man, "Your faith has made you well." Even though the other nine were cleansed of their leprosy, did they really 'get well?' The one who returned was made well-he was filled with gratitude! Many of us have been baptized, yet how many of us are filled with gratitude? Questions:

2012-02-23 - Fear of Failure - God Always Sees the Humble Heart by Gene Kim - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 1 Kings 21 Ahab really wanted Naboth's vineyard, and so he was willing to do anything to get it. He kept on sinning until he got the vineyard - discouragement, self-pity, anger, and eventually murder. There are "vineyards" in everyone's lives nowadays, jobs, relationships, or successes. Ahab was so consumed with what he wanted that his marriage was ungodly. I see how I don't lead my wife because I get consumed with my job and success, and my relationship with God goes the same way as my marriage. I get so guilty that I lose confidence in how God can use my life. What encourages me about this scripture is how God uses people to confront others with the truth and how He is hoping for people to humble themselves and turn back to Him. Ahab was described as a man who "sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord" (v. 25). Elijah warned Ahab of the impending disaster because of his sin. Ahab took God's warning seriously and humbled himself before God, and the Lord noticed and blessed him! I can feel at times that I have messed up so much that God would never believe in me again, and yet God is merely looking for a heart that is humble, broken, and grateful. He hopes that I would have the courage to see my sin. God notices and moves on behalf of a humble heart! |
2013-10-21 - Resolve to Lead Your Family The greater responsibility to raise your children is yours. When the dad leads, kids are up to twenty times more likely to stay in church long-term than when moms are the spiritual leaders at home
|
2015-02-11 - Lead By Example Everyone must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence - Jonah 3:7-8 The biggest enemy of godly leaders is not leading by example Leading by example has always been one of a leader's greatest goals
Jonah warned the Ninevites of God's coming judgement and wrath Their king responded by instructing his people to:
...in hopes that God would change his minds and spare the city The king of the Ninevites humility and leading by example saved his city from judgement and wrath When you do as you say in life, you make it far easier for everyone around you to do the same |
2015-03-07 - High VIsibility Crispus and everyone in his household believed in the Lord - Acts 18:8 High visibility can have rewards for those who stand out in the crowd Why does the Bible mention Crispus and no one else? Crispus led the Corinthian synagogue Paul baptized him and his family members also followed in his footsteps Noteworthness came him taking a stand in a place where doing so could cause him big problems in a time when professing faith in Jesus was very dangerous He was willing to stand out for his faith reguardless of the cost Do you have the courage to stand out in your world? |
2015-03-22 - Show Compassion Jesus: He sent them out to tell everyone about the kigdom of God and to heal the sick - Luke 9:1-2 He didn't just want them to just show people the good news of salvation but also to tell them about it as well Jesus was the example of the One who struck a perfect balance between good works and effective words He spoke the message that fueled his acts of compassion That same message - people need today to both see and hear! What compassion or help do people around you need the most? What good news do they need to hear? |
2015-04-20 - Gratitude Go back to your family and tell them everything God has done for you - Luke 8:39 People who express daily gratitude reported higer levels of:
Jesus and his disciples encountered a violent demon-possessed man - naked, out of his mind, completely alone He calmly and purposefully took control of the situation and delivered the man from his life of torment Jesus told the man to go home and tell everyone what had happened The man gratefully followed Jesus' instructions When you think of everything that God has done for you, what other response is there but to follow him? A greateful heart is the best, infectious witness to the goodness and power of God

2015-06-01 - Honesty's Rewards Have I ever... Tell me and I will make right whatever I have done wrong - 1 Samuel 12:3 Samuel earned a reputation for unimoeachable honesty that served him well At Saul's coronation, he asked the people to declare if Samuel was honest and person of integrity Everyone knew the answer and didn't hesitate to give it - YES! Samuel could speak to the people with great authority because he had carefully maintained his reputation as an honest man How can Samuel's example help you to choose honesty? |
2015-06-14 - Assurance Today you will be with me in paradise - Luke 23:43 The criminal knew Jesus had the power to heal but also knew everyone will die eventually He asked for something for the eternity and he faith about it The man also knew something better could be waiting for him if he could just muster enough strength to speak to Jesus With only minutes to live, this condememned criminal came to know in a short time he would hear the same voice welcoming him into an eternal home on the other side

2015-06-18 - Evangelism One-on-One We have found the Messiah; Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus - John 1:41-42 Not everyone get to preach to a mass audience but everyone can make a difference in the lives of people around them This is where Andrew got his start before the Book of Acts When Andrew first meet Jesus and realized his identity, he couldn't contain his excitement - he had to tell someone Andrew's one simple act of inviting his brother Peter forever changed his life and the life of millisons who would come to faith in Jesus Christ through Peter's life It isn't about your training or credentials but tell others you have found the Messiah! |
2015-06-28 - Making a Lasting Impression King Darius sent a message - everyone throughout my kingdom should tremble with fear before thr God of Daniel - Daniel 6:25-26 How you live and how you demonstrate your faith can make a big impression Opponents of Daniel duped Darius into sending the prophet into a den of lions King Dairus wanted to see the power of Daniel's God put on display - that is exactly what happened Daniel came out without a scratch - it was a miracle and Darius praise the name of Daniel's God Our world is filled with men like Darius who see to see God power demonstrated in our lives |
