  • We are all in Christ
  • There is no different: race, martial status, money you make, area you live in

2010-05-17 - Desire's Journey - The Beast Within
Years of living in an indifferent hostile world creates a deep sense of unsettledness with in us

Battle of good and evil within us - Romans 7:20-23
Sinful desires are contrary to the Spirit
They conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want - Galatians 5:17

There is a nagging awareness warning us not to feel our hunger too deeply or it will undo us
We wouldn't want to do anything crazy or desperate

We want what our unmet desire wants but our sinful nature wants what is contrary

We try everything - TV, sex, relationships, drugs, etc - going one to another
We don't know what we want because we're so unacquaninted with our desire

We try to keep a safe distance between our daily lives and our heart's desire - because it causes us too much trouble

Do we really want to open Pandora's box?

Dare we awaken our hears to their true desires?
Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all?

Our dilemma is this: we can't seem to live with desire, and we can't live without it

2010-06-19 - All or Nothing (part 2)

  4. Giving to God
  5. Complete Openness
  6. People are going to heaven or hell
  7. Reaching out to others

2010-08-01 - Desire's Journey - Keeping Heart (part 2)
The NT scriptures do not differ from the old testament about forgetfulness
Bread and the cup was give to us in rememberence of him

Paul was shock that the Galatians were turning away so soon from God - Galatians 1:6
He sent Timothy to the Corinthians to remind them to share the eternal life he gives through Christ - 1 Corinthians 4:17
Peter, who knew firsthand the grief that comes with forgetting writes to keep firm the grip on faith - 1 Peter 5:10

Life is a journey of the heart that requires the mind
The heart is the center of life
Desire is always where the action is
We must bring the truth into our hearts to guard and to guide our desires - this is the other half of the mission

Popular phrases that do not work: Follow your heart, Trust your soul

We must cling to the truth for dear life - both heart and mind together

2010-08-19 - Waking Dead - Restored
The deepest and most wonderful of all mythic truths reveiled in the Beauty and the Beast
The transformation: a creature that no one could bear the sight of is transformed into a handsome prince
  • Cinderella rises from from supression to become queen
  • The ugly duckling becomes a beautiful swan
  • Pinocchio becomes a real boy
  • Frog becomes a prince
  • Scrooge becomes a good friend to all
  • Cowardly lion, Scarecrow, Tinman all get what they are missing
They all transformed into the very thing they never thought they could be

It is the secret of Christianity
You must be born again - John 3:7

Not about keeping laws or rules
Counts whether we have really have been changed into new and different people - Galatians 6:15

Is this not the message of the gospel?
  • Zacchaeus the trickster becomes Zaccheaus the honest
  • Mary the sinful becomes Mary the faithful
  • Paul the self-righteous murder becomes Paul the humble apostle

2010-10-10 - Contagious Christian - Pull of Compassion
Caring for the tangible needs of others is at the core of Christianity
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless - look at orphans and widows in their distress - James 1:27

Compassion is echoed throughout the Bible:
  • Be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor - Deuteronomy 15:11
  • Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me - Matthew 25:40
  • All I ask is that you remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do - Galatians 2:10
Uncaring Christianity does not attract inquirers
Clear and consistent demonstration of Christ-like love is a powerful magnet that pulls people toward Him

Not about who you are or what you did
It is about how you care, being a neighbor - Luke 10:36-37
In Luke 10 - when the wounded man awoke, he must have wondered, "Who did this? Why would they do help me in such a great way?"
It is when people start asking, "Why didn't he not turn away like everyone else?"

As I have loved you, so you must love one another - John 13:34-35
All men will know that you are my disciples

2010-11-25 - Mission - Fishers of Men
Jesus summarized in one sentence his plan and our destiny
I will make you fishers of men - Mark 1:17

The call is to become, ginormai (greek word)
  • to be created
  • to be born or produced
  • to come into existence
NIV omitted phrase but Jesus is calling men to become something - something that they are not
Cannot become on their own

Not just can things we do and all the way down to the core of our being

We are commanded to follow not to fish
Becoming a fisher of men is the result of following Jesus
It is impossible to follow Jesus and not become a fisher of men

To follow Jesus means:
  • Must be committed to obeying all his words - John 8:31
  • Must have his heart - Galatians 2:20
  • We love that he loves
    • God - Matthew 22:37
    • Our brothers - John 13:34-35
    • The lost - Matthew 9:13
    • The kingdom - Matthew 6:33

2010-12-04 - Mission - Peter, From a Reed
Peter was a reed blowing in the wind who became a rock whom God could build great things
Jesus looked at Peter and saw what he could become
Perhaps for the first time in Peter's life someone believed in him and had a vision that he could be someone great

When we feel believed in, we feel loved
The only thing that counts if faith expressing itself through love - Galatians 5:6
God looks at us for what we will become - Jeremiah 29:11
Viewing our day to day struggles and failures as their growth process on the way to becoming what God wants
Peter was convinced of this It kept Peter coming back after his failures

When Peter was asked if he wanted to leave, he said 'Lord, to whom shall we go?" - John 6:68-69

Think of all of Peter's heartbreaking failures....
  • Stepped of the boat, only to sink - Matthew 14:31
  • Rebuked for his dullness - Matthew 15:15-16
  • Rebuked Jesus and got the rebuke of a lifetime - Matthew 16:22-23
  • Fell asleep when Jesus needed him most - Matthew 26:40
  • Denied knowing Jesus three times and wept bitterly - Matthew 26:75

2010-12-05 - Mission - Peter, To a Rock
Peter's talk with Jesus by the coals burned an incredible mark in the heart of Peter - John 21:9

At Pentecost, Peter is recorded by Luke to have
  • Heroic acts of wisdom - Acts 2:14
  • Boldness and courage
  • Healings - Acts 5:15-16
Peter had profoundly changed but sometimes rocks have rough edges
Paul was very angry with on an occasion - Galatians 2:11
But Peter grew to become a stronger disciple

While the world stagnates in, the Christian list is an exciting adventure in change

Peter was not only a hero because he changed but because he also persevered

2010-12-22 - Sin (part II)
Galatians 5:19-21
  • Sin is the fundamentally “un-God-ward” orientation of our “flesh” or “sinful nature” and finds expression in many different ways. Emphasize “and the like.”
  • What is the common element in all these things? Self-centeredness.
  • Be as specific as necessary to explain and share from your own life about the sins listed. How do you see yourself in these verses? What sins have been characteristic of your own sinful nature? (If needed, look at additional Scriptures which catalog sins.)
James 4:17
  • We are sinful and in need of forgiveness not only as a result of those sins we have committed, but for failing to do the good that we know to do.
Romans 6:15-18
  • How does sin enslave?
  • Note that sin is a power that must be defeated as well as specific acts that must be repented of.
  • Who alone can set us free from sin? (John 8:31-36)
Romans 6:23
  • What are the eternal consequences of sin?
  • Why be urgent to learn about receiving the gift of God that comes through Jesus Christ?
  • Review these verses as honestly as you can to get in touch with the bad news about your own sinfulness. In the next couple of studies, we will look at the good news of God’s solution to our bondage to sin. (Note: In some instances it is important to have the person articulate how he or she was saved or forgiven of sin before examining the Bible’s teaching about salvation.)

2010-12-30 - Baptism into Christ (part II)

Ephesians 1:3-10

  • An important New Testament teaching: every spiritual blessing from God is found “in Christ.”
  • What are some of those blessings listed here? (Sonship, adoption, grace, redemption, forgiveness…)
  • So how does a person enter “into Christ”? (Next passage.)

Galatians 3:26-29

  • We are baptized “into Christ.” Note that Paul did not consider faith and baptism to be contradictory.
  • Baptism is a tangible expression of faith that places us “in Christ” where salvation occurs.

Infant Baptism? Colossians 2:11-12

  • Baptism is an immersion in water (from the Greek baptizo meaning “plunge, dip, immerse” - see Acts 8:38-39), but it does not operate “automatically” apart from the faith of the one who is baptized.
  • Can an infant believe? Repent of sin? And what sins need to be forgiven?
  • Ezekiel 18:20: Contrary to the widely held doctrine of “original sin,” guilt for sin is not inherited from our parents.
  • We are guilty for our own sins and saved by grace through our own response of faith.

2011-01-06 - Holy Spirit (part III)

1 Thessalonians 5:16-20 - How do we “put out the fire of” the Holy Spirit? Why is a life of faith the only
one that is in keeping with God’s Spirit living in us? What influences in the world around us can keep us
from having a faithful, God-centered outlook?

Romans 8:5-17, 26-27 - A Spiritual mindset brings life and peace, and obedience to God’s Word. The
Spirit frees us from fear and confirms that we are fully God’s children. The Spirit also aids in our life of
prayer and devotion to God.

Galatians 5:22-23 - The fruit of the Spirit: Expect it! Pursue it! This is the best “evidence” that you have
received the Holy Spirit, who is transforming us to become like Jesus. Decide to live according to the
Spirit - and keep affirming that decision!

Perhaps he wanted her to be a boy and never got over the disappointment
He prefers to go to his son's baseball game rather than his daughter's ballet

There is no male vs female in Christ - Galatians 3:28
God created man and woman differently but there is not any difference in his love or attention toward them

Lot (Genesis 19) was the worst All-Male dad
In Sodom, when homosexuals mob appeared at Lot's door, he offered his tow daughters
Priority should have been on his daughters
If he had sons, there is a lot of doubt he would have made such an offer

What humility is not:

What humility is:
  • Getting and applying input - Proverbs 19:20
  • Taking correction - Proverbs 12:1

How was Jesus humble?
  • He was God but left heaven to become man (like you becoming an ant)
  • He gave up being a king to serve those who didn’t love or respect him.
  • He died for you and me.
Question: Is there anyone in your life difficult for you to be humble towards?
Question: What would Jesus advise you to do with that situation?

To be like Jesus is to be humble

2011-10-23 - Mind Change - Accept whatever comes

Accept whatever comes…with faith.

Disappointment? Faith
Unfairness? Faith.
Fear? Faith.

2012-10-20 - Prayer of the Righeous - Singing to Me
Zephaniah 3:17
  • He has taken away our punishment
  • He has turned back our enemy
  • He is mighty to save
  • He rejoices over us with singing
The Lord rejoices when one sinner repents - Luke 15:10
Nature rejoices in God's presence - Psalms 98:7-8
God promises that nature will rejoice in our presence - Isaiah 55:12

Faithful servants are invited to come share in the master's happiness - Matthew 25:23

The very nature of heaven is to share the happiness of God for all of eternity

Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22

Our prayer needs to be an outpouring of joy and thanksgiving before a joyful, singing God
He loves to hear us being happy
My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song - Psalms 28:7

2014-03-18 - Teach Them to Fear the Lord (part II)

The fear of the Lord one keeps away from evil - Proverbs 16:6

How one may avoid the snares of death - Proverbs 14:2

Fear of the Lord causes our other fears to go away

  • Wisdom, counsel, and understanding begin with the fear of the Lord - Proverbs 8:14
  • Wealth, honor, and fruitfulness follow the fear the Lord - Proverbs 8:17-19
  • The fruits of humility and a proper hatred of pride and evil from this fear - Proverbs 8:13

How blessed is the man who fears the LORD - Psalms 112:1-2

Prayerfully ask God to help us develop a strong fear of the Lord

Training them to fear the Lord sets them up to live with incredible wisdom and success:

  • They will reap what they sow - Galatians 6:7
  • He will judge them one day - Romans 14:12
  • He is a great rewarder of those who diligently seek Him and obey Him - Hebrews 11:6

2015-11-02 - Perfect Patience

God had mercy on me... his great patience with even the worst of sinners - 1 Timothy 1:16

Patience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:22

Jesus was the most patient man who ever lived, beyond human understanding

  • He lovingly ministered to the worst of sinners
  • Dealt with cynicism of corrupt religous leaders
  • Shephered 12 often-clueless apostles
  • Those closest to him did not hear his words much less apply them

He corrected them but also patiently prepared them to take the reins after he returned to heaven

You can best learn patience by understanding that God daily extends his patience to you

2015-12-01 - Willing to Confront

When Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face - Galatians 2:11

Uncorrected errors do multiply, you got to face them some day

Few of us enjoy confrontation:

  • Pointing out other's flaws
  • Having our flaws exposed

Spiritual health sometimes calls for loving confrontations

Petter had erred in refusing to dine with uncircumcised Gentiles Christians

Peter was clearly in the wrong and Paul confronted him directly

Paul modeled the importance of lving confrontation with regard to crucial issues of faith

If he let this error slide, bigger errors would soon bury the young church
