2009-11-08 - Repentance - Transfigure Our Minds (part 1) We each have a worldview or mindset that functions as a life lens World has been squeezing us into its mold – more than we realize Peter’s mind
Prepare your minds for action – 1 Peter 1:13-14 Space shuttle takes 2,250,000 pounds of fuel to escape the earth’s gravity Only few pounds to remain in orbit – Christians are called more than just to orbit Most trials produce greater faith – hospitalized child, illness, death, ministry turmoil, financial pressures Ways to fight – devote time to prayer, read scripture, explore ways to encourage wife, get advice from elders, spend special time with the kids Ways to not to – laziness, frustrate wife, neglect kids, feeling overwhelmed and under underappreciated, escape to the TV |

|
2010-01-25 - Kingdom First - Only One Master What occupies my mind? If we are eager and driven to gain more we will stray from the faith and be pierced with many griefs - 1 Timothy 6:10 Secret to being content, I can do everything through him that gives me strength - Philippians 4:12-13 Judas: example of someone trying to live with 2 masters:
Elders gave large sums of money to have them lie about the disciples stealing the body of Jesus - Matthew 28:12 What is our selling point? Do not put our hope in wealth, which is so uncertain - 1 Timothy 6:17 Keep your lives free from the love of money - Hebrews 13:5 |
2010-02-18 - One Another - Encouraging One Another (part 3) Encourage one another - Hebrews 3:12-13
|
2010-02-19 - One Another - Spurring One Another (part 1) Let us consider how we spur one another on toward love and good deeds - Hebrews 10:24 Two unfaithful extremes:
|
2010-03-15 - To Live is Christ - No Confidence in Flesh Paul describes people who do not appreciate what Jesus has done as dogs - Philippians 3:14 There are 2 options to approaching God:
Man, in his pride, is drawn to the performance model Paul refers to the people who acknowledge Jesus as Lord but would not let go of the performance model These people held on to certain Jewish regulation that were made obsolete by Jesus The grace model is revolutionary Seems too easy to be true but too hard for our egos to accept Grace model says:
|
2010-03-24 - To Live is Christ - Mind Change Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable - think of such things - Philippians 4:8-9 It is all about the focus Focus on the mess or you can change your mind and focus on:
Jesus saw the increase in wickedness - Matthew 24:12 While pessimistic about the world's chances, he was totally optimistic about the future with God You will have trouble in this world but Jesus has overcome the world - John 16:33 |
2010-05-12 - Desire's Journey - Our Heart's Deepest Secret But I still haven't found what I am looking for - U2 We have a secret desire for life as it was meant to be Again and again the yearning of our heart cries for this life Life comes to all of us as a mystery We long to live a life we are not sure where to find The greatest human tragedy is to give up the search for life. Nothing is of greater importance than the life of our deep heart To lose heart is to lose everything - Proverbs 4:23 Who we really are and why we are here comes to us through our heart's desire Our heart yearns for things to be right is so strong that it overrides the logic and hopes against hope every time The heart has its reasons which reason knows not of - Proverbs 20:5 There are two things that pierce the human heart:
|
2010-05-15 - Desire's Journey - The Dilemma of Desire We can not live without yearning, yet the yearning sets us up for disappointment Because of its vulnerable nature, desire begins to feel like our worst enemy Despair is the fate of the desiring soul - Sam Houston Hope deferred make the heart sick - Proverbs 13:12 How awful it feels to open our hearts to joy, only to have grief come in How do we live in a world with desire so deep in us and disappointment lurking behind every corner? Are a few arrows, dare we even desire? Do we refuse to love because we may hurt? possibility of pain? Shutting down our hearts is to die altogether Hope deferred make the heart sick... but when dreams come true, there is life and joy Most of us have chosen to reduce our desire to a more manageable size We allow it only in small doses:
|
2010-05-27 - Desire's Journey - Language of Desire Jesus offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry to the one who could deliever him - Hebrews 5:7 Strong desires make strong prayers Children are often not embarrassed by desire Why are we embarrassed by our desire? Why do we pretend?
We don't pray like Jesus because we don't allow ourselves to nearly alive Pretending seems a much more reliable road to Christian maturity Without a deep and buring desire of our own, we will be ruled by the desires of others |
2010-05-28 - Desire's Journey - Hopeless without Desire Peter tell us to be ready to give the reason for the hope that everyone one is asking us about - 1 Peter 3:15 When was the last time someone stopped you to ask about your hope? Is there nothing about our lives that is worth asking about? Our hopes are deeply tied to our real desires Killing desire has meant a hopeless life for too many People aren't exactly ripping the roofs of churches to get inside The enemies ploy:
Danger is not desire but disowning desire |
2010-06-03 - Desire's Journey - Hardest Lesson to Learn God promises evern man futility and failure We spend much of our time attempting to end these curses It can not be done Will life ever be what I so deeply want it to be? We must have life - we can not arrange for it People avoid the lesson:
...rather than facing the truth - Isaiah 57:10 Some have seen that this will not work, yet they have faded into resignation, bitterness or dispair How do we accept that it can't be done with an open heart? |
2010-06-04 - Desire's Journey - Misplaced Hope In this world, you will have trouble Why aren't we encouraged by this? Desire can not live without hope. Hope in what? We try to create heaven here |
2010-06-28 - Jesus - The Lord (part 2)Jesus is Lord of the HarvestMatthew 9:35-38
Jesus is Lord of the SabbathMatthew 12:1-14
|
2010-06-30 - Desire's Journey - Great Restoration (part 1) Spring reminds us that life can return to the dead Our ideas of heaven are sometimes not very desirable We sigh and feel guilty that is we are not more "spritual" Scripture tells us that God has set eternity in our hearts - Ecclesiastes 3:11 |
2010-07-12 - Desire's Journey - The Adventure Begins (part 4) Some love what they do They have found a way to link what they are truly gifted at with the means of paying the bills We've come to think of work as a result of the Fall Dilbert is a icon our working days
Work is not a thing ones does to live, but the thing one lives to do What if you even the freedom and power to do exactly what you were always meant to do? |
2010-07-23 - Desire's Journey - The Heart's Healer Worship is the act of the abandoned heart adoring its God It is the union we crave and what we need Worship occurs when we say to God from our hearts, "You are my One whom I desire" In Psalms - no matter where the poet begins, he always ends in worship It is no coincidence, where our journey must lead Our only hope for rest from our craving of our desire is in God and us united with him |
2010-07-26 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 3) Pleasure is often more about drugging ourselves that it is about enjoying ourselves Avoiding the ache is always worse in the end than the ache itself We want to predict what the Lord is going to do so that it does not hurt so bad when it happens Whole creation has been groaning right up til the present time yet if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently - Romans 8:22-25 We live in hope and he says hoping is waiting and groaning Ask yourself: What am I waiting for? Is there anything I desire that I am doing nothing to secure? To wait is to learn the spiritual grace of detachment - the freedom of desire Not the absence of desire but desire at rest I have still and quieted my soul - Psalms 131:2 |
2010-07-31 - Desire's Journey - Keeping Heart (part 1) We have similar path we follow
Forgetfulness does not come against us like an enemy in battle formation It comes unnoticed We are warned about forgetfulness in the scriptures The pattern so predictable, we have come to expect it:
Be careful and watch yourself closely so that you don't forget the things your eyes have seen - Deuteronomy 4:9 |
2010-08-06 - Waking Dead - At War (part 1) The thief comes to only steal, kill, and destroy our life - John 10:10 God intends for you to have life but right now that life is opposed The offer from God is life, but you are going to have to fight for it The enemy in your life has a different agenda We are a war The sooner we come to terms with it, the better hope we have of making it through We live in a combat zone - a violent clash between kingdoms Where did you think all this opposition was coming from? We are in the image of God - Genesis 1:27 God crowd us with glory and honor - Psalms 8:3-5 We were once more than we are now Glory has been the object of a long and brutal was Lurking in the Garden is the enemy Unable to overthrow the Mighty One, he turned his sights on those who bore his image David: You turn my glory into shame - Psalms 4:2 War is a central theme in the Old Testament The Lord is a warrior - Exodus 15:2 OT Battle examples:
|
2010-08-31 - Waking Dead - Our Story (part 1) Our life is a story We need someone to walk with us God has given us the Counselor - the Spirit of truth - John 14:16-17 We need someone that makes thing clear and true Not just an annual checkup but all the time The purpose of the Christian life is that our hearts might be restored and set free That is what Jesus came to do All sorts of damage has been done to your heart
Even our laughter is out of heartache - Proverbs 14:13 We are told to trust in the Lord (Proverb 3:5) - it is second nature to worry We are told to love one another deeply (1 Peter 1:22) - that is very rare The answers lie deeply in our heart The heart of a man is deep waters, but a man of understanding draws him out - Proverbs 20:5 |
2010-09-06 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 3) Chris came not only to pardon us but to heal us Jesus can and wants to heal your heart. What does that rouse in you?
The heart is God's dwelling place If you ignore your heart, it is like looking for him everywhere but at home It might be a surprise to you that Christ ask our permission to come in and heal Behold, I stand at the door and knock - Revelation 3:20 He does not force his way in There are sometimes rooms we have kept locked up We must give him permission to come in there - ask Jesus for your whole heart back |
2010-09-18 - Waking Dead - Spiritual Warfare (part 6) We must be careful that the religious does not turn discipleship into a soul-killing exercise Counseling "medicine" for the sick patients can cause an endless cycle of always relying on the meds instead of focusing on a solution Hope deferred makes the heart sick - Proverbs 13:12 So the wounds of the heart are never healed A religious spirit makes it next to impossible foe a person to break free by spreading the belief there is no war
If it does not restore the image of God and rejoice in the heart, it is not Christianity |

2010-12-08 - Mission - Cannot Help Proclaiming (part II) What else compelled Peter and John? 3. Having a spiritual perspective of the plan of God God orchestrated situations so people will find him - Acts 17:26-27 Satan can lull us to sleep with his lies If I miss this opportunity, maybe God will use someone else, they don't look interested They apostles felt the burden of salvation They were convicted that they were the only hope of salvation If they stopped, hope was gone We must have a heartfelt conviction that we are God's vehicles to reach a lost and desperate world 4. Must understand that Satan's victory/defeat is determined by our faithfulness to proclaim the word of God boldly We have two God-given weapons:
He wins every time we do not open our mouth - we must not be silent |
2011-01-16 - Followup - Evangelism Boldness Matthew 5:13-16 - We must be salt and light John 4:34 -The harvest is great. Believe it! True disciples are consumed with making more disciples. - Acts 4:14, 4:20 4:33, 5:14, 5:21, 5:29, 5:41-42, 6:1, 6:7 Sources of Boldness:

2011-02-01 - Gender Controversy - Intro We are told that the opposition is a recent phenomenon
They use examples: Jon/David, Ruth, Naomi Clear passages are "reinterpreted" so the "modern reader" can understand
Both sides claim the Bible supports their view - It is one way or the other Bible disapproves but offers hope Satan wants to call evil good and good evil Sodom and Gomorrah Genesis 13:13 - MEN were exceedingly wicked; rebelled against God |

2011-07-03 - Mind of Christ - Relationship with God (part IV) Oneness with the Father is a definable concept in the scriptures: It means to live in the presence of the Father
|
2011-07-22 - Fearing God - Beyond Compare (part II) Another relationship between the fear of the Lord and trusting in him: Psalms 33:19 - The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him and hope in his unfailing love Verse starts out talking about the vanity of trusting in the army, own strength, or even of a horse Why should we trust in him? Proceeding verse tell us His mighty power in creation; His absolute sovereignty over nations As we become convicted of His greatness, we will fear him - stand in awe of him - trust in him We can not separate trust in God from the fear of God We will trust Him only to the extent that we genuinely stand in awe of Him The history of the Hebrews - how poorly they learned to fear Him Psalms 78:32 - Through all the things God did; they did not trust him God works everyday - one way we remind ourselves of his mighty acts is reading the historical sections of the Old Testament |
2011-08-26 - Fearing God - Mystery Too High God work contrary to how we would God wisdom is infinite; ours in finite We tend to assume we would understand if God would just explain We don't believe that "his understanding no one can fathom - Isiah 40:28 On the road to Emmaus, they said "they hoped Jesus was the one going to redeem Israel - Luke 24:21 They did not understand what God was doing even doing even as it was unfolding Unexplained setback may never be understood Paul planned to sail to Rome and Spain but ended up in jail for 2 years - Acts 24:27 Humility should be a hallmark those who fear God I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me - Psalms 131:1 |
2011-11-01 - Mind Change - God works for your good In all things God works for your good. No exceptions and no lapses. Even in what happened yesterday. Even in something that caused great pain. Even in something that dashed your hopes. All things means all things. Isaiah 49:15-16 - Even if mothers were to forget, I could never forget you Jeremiah 29:11 - I have plans to give you a future filled with hope Romans 8:28 - In all things God works for the good of those who love him |
2011-11-06 - Mind Change - Starting Out Morning breath of the soul? Rinse it! Waking up with the blahs? Feeling unmotivated, uninspired, discouraged, depressed? Dreading some things you have to do? Take a prayer and the Word and deal with it! Say “This is not of God; I won’t stand for it.” Psalms 5:3 - In the morning I will present my case Psalms 42:5 - Put your hope in God Hebrews 12:1-2 - We must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely |
2011-11-16 - Mind Change - Grace God always gives the next grace for the next step. It may look bigger than any you have taken before, but if he calls you to take it, his grace will be sufficient. The challenges that are coming up may be greater than any you have faced, but God will always be enough. Judges 6:14 - Go in the strength you have 2 Corinthians 1:10 - We have set our hope on him that he will deliver us yet again |
2011-12-09 - Day 6 - Too Good to Keep 2 Kings 7:3-11
Application: Set a "goal of faith" for yourself in evangelism today. Refuse to be discouraged! |
2011-12-11 - Day 8 - The Hope of Glory 1 Corinthians 15:19
|
2012-01-08 - Day 36 - A Hope and a Future Do you worry about your future? What are your hopes and what are your fears? Jeremiah 29:11-13
Psalms 16:5-8 - Do you feel this way about your life? Why? 1 Timothy 6:6-10
Application: If you see anxiety or discontentment in your life, confess it as a lack of faith, and memorize one of these scriptures to remind yourself of God's faithfulness. |
2012-02-06 - Ministry - Compassion: The Heart of Jesus John 11:33-35 In a world so full of pain, hardship and suffering the compassion of Jesus lights the world. It is a comfort to know that "our God is full of compassion". Psalms 116:5 Jesus was deeply moved by people's suffering. Jesus sincerely cared and invested his heart in others. Does the hardship of others cause us to invest our hearts or harden them? Do we imitate Jesus' heart? We can learn to be compassionate only when we have allowed Jesus to comfort us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

2012-02-19 - Fear of Failure - God Is Still With Us When We Fail by Julie Clark, San Francisco Church of Christ 2 Samuel 14:14 So many times in my life I feel like I am all alone, facing failure after failure by myself. What has given me hope and shown me that "failure is not fatal" is the fact that God is always working, putting people in my life, devising ways to help me stay strong. We are not alone! God is always working on our behalf.

2012-02-20 - Fear of Failure - Relying on God Never Fails by Jeremy Clark, San Francisco Church of Christ Jeremiah 17:5-10; Hosea 10:12-13 Often the failures in my life have felt devastating. They have made me doubt myself, made me doubt my purpose and made me doubt God. When I began to lead a ministry, I thought I could do it by myself. I was out to prove to myself that I was capable. As I began to lead I ran around all the time, I was exhausted, anxious, and worried about getting in trouble every day. I was miserable. What I didn't realize was that as I was trying to prove that I could do it, God was proving to me that I couldn't without him. My failure made me want to quit. I felt cursed; it seemed all the the work I did meant nothing. God was showing me my pride, but instead of praying more, I worried more and ran around more and was completely ineffective. My failure came because of my pride, my unwillingness to be open, and not getting the help I needed. I was relying on myself, and God was teaching me that he would not bless it. That lesson was hard to learn, but one so valuable to my life once I was willing to learn to rely on God and not my own strength.

2012-02-23 - Fear of Failure - God Always Sees the Humble Heart by Gene Kim - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 1 Kings 21 Ahab really wanted Naboth's vineyard, and so he was willing to do anything to get it. He kept on sinning until he got the vineyard - discouragement, self-pity, anger, and eventually murder. There are "vineyards" in everyone's lives nowadays, jobs, relationships, or successes. Ahab was so consumed with what he wanted that his marriage was ungodly. I see how I don't lead my wife because I get consumed with my job and success, and my relationship with God goes the same way as my marriage. I get so guilty that I lose confidence in how God can use my life. What encourages me about this scripture is how God uses people to confront others with the truth and how He is hoping for people to humble themselves and turn back to Him. Ahab was described as a man who "sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord" (v. 25). Elijah warned Ahab of the impending disaster because of his sin. Ahab took God's warning seriously and humbled himself before God, and the Lord noticed and blessed him! I can feel at times that I have messed up so much that God would never believe in me again, and yet God is merely looking for a heart that is humble, broken, and grateful. He hopes that I would have the courage to see my sin. God notices and moves on behalf of a humble heart! |
2012-02-27 - Fear of Failure - God Encourages Those Who Fail by Yvonne San Juan - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 1 Kings 19:1-9 Elijah felt like a complete failure. He was tired of running, alone, and so discouraged that he preferred death. Elijah had just been a part of a great victory where God demonstrated his power to the people and they saw rain for the first time in many years. He faced a new challenge as the Queen wanted to kill him, and he ran away. God didn't let Elijah fail; he encouraged Elijah with food and rest. God reminded him there were others that were faithful to God and Elijah was not alone. God enabled Elijah to keep on going when Elijah felt like he had had enough. Through failure, I have learned to call to God in prayer, and to be completely honest with Him, just like Elijah. I have also decided to be completely open about my struggles with my friends, and to not go through my failures alone. Also, reading about godly people who have failed in the Bible has given me hope and encouragement during the hard times that when I fail, God still loves me. |
2012-03-09 - Blessings In Christ (part V) Continue studying through the blessing of Jesus: 21. We receive imputed righteousness - Romans 4:6 22. Our names are written in heaven - Luke 10:20 23. We are given a blessed hope of Christ's returning - Titus 2:13 24. We are seated in heavenly places - Ephesians 2:6 25. We have fellowship with the trinity - 1 John 1:3 |
2014-05-02 - The Miracle of John's birth Luke 1:13 - Your prayer has been heard A priest’s intercession for the nation undoubtedly included a petition for the Messiah, Israel’s promised Deliverer and King. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe was ready to answer a prayer that had been prayed for hundreds of years, but He purposely chose a man who could pray an old prayer with a fresh heart. The prayer at that exact moment may not have been for a son. Zechariah could not possibly have known was how intimately connected would be his corporate prayer for the Messiah and his personal prayer for a son. Not becoming hopeless over a repetitious request can be terribly challenging. We need to continue to walk faithfully with God even though you are disappointed. Zechariah waited a long time for God’s answer, but when it came, it exceeded everything the priest could have thought or asked. Can you even imagine being told in advance of your child’s conception that he or she would bring joy and delight to you and be great in the sight of the Lord?

2015-02-04 - No Contest I come to you in the name of the Lord - 1 Samuel 17:45 David spoke words of confidence He knew that God had sent him and He never sends a man to fight without equipping and guilding him Goliath had size, armor, weapons and a hard heart on his side It was a hopeless situation - for the Giant The moment David accepted God's call to fight, Goliath was as good as dead. This is the Lords battle! - 1 Samuel 17:47 What "giants" in your life make you feel like the underdog? In Christ, can not only win over the giants but have an abolute rout. |
2015-02-11 - Lead By Example Everyone must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence - Jonah 3:7-8 The biggest enemy of godly leaders is not leading by example Leading by example has always been one of a leader's greatest goals
Jonah warned the Ninevites of God's coming judgement and wrath Their king responded by instructing his people to:
...in hopes that God would change his minds and spare the city The king of the Ninevites humility and leading by example saved his city from judgement and wrath When you do as you say in life, you make it far easier for everyone around you to do the same |
2015-03-25 - Hope Jeremiah: Great is his faithfullness and his mercies begin afresh each morning - Lamentations 3:22-24 He surveyed th ruins of the once great city of Jerusalem Jeremiah saw death and destruction all around and felt a pain we can only imagine He found it within himslef to speak to his one Source of hope Jeremaih recognized God had granted him life and could hope for better things from the hand of his heavenly Father Where do you place your hope when you or loved ones encounter pain and difficulty? |
2015-05-10 - Cure for Disappointment Didn't our hearts burns within us as he talked with us - Luke 24:32 If I look at myself, I am depressed When Jesus died, as the disciples saw it, all hope for a better life was gone At just the right moment, Jesus reveal himself to them When he disappeared from their sight, he took with him the pain, despair, and disappointment When you face situations that leave you feeling despressed, disappointed, and discouraged, look to Jesus |
2015-05-11 - Shining Lamp Full of the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God - Acts 7:55 Nothing prompts change likea man's courage in the face of potential personal loss. Stephen had that kind of courage. Religous leaders hoped persecuting Christians would put a stop to this new religious movement, exactly the opposite happened Stephen willingly died for what he believed in and he contributed greatly to the spread of the gospel message At the scene of Stephen's murder stood a young Pharisee named Saul - the same Saul God miraculously converted Stephen's courage and faith in the face of death apparently made a lasting impression Pauls bold preaching would change the world forever - Acts 22:19-20 Lamps do not talk, but they do shine. Is your lamp shining today? |
