2010-07-04 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 1) To know and to be known. It is our deepest ache. Love makes us to crazy things for love. No union on earth like the consummation of love between a man and woman Becoming one - this is what God is seeking with us Bible is the greatest romance ever written |
2010-07-10 - Desire's Journey - The Adventure Begins (part 2) The first thing in the Bible is God working The morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy - Job 38:7 Jesus said his Father is always at work to this very day and he too is working - John 5:17
God loves his work God delights in doing tall these things |
2010-08-07 - Waking Dead - At War (part 2) The theme of does not end with the Old Testament The birth of Christ was an act of war
Not just a theme of the Bible but the backdrop for the whole story What is he fighting for? Our freedom and restoration |
2010-08-26 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 3) You are going to the need your whole heart - so you will need every ounce of courage and faith as well James and John, sons of Zebedee did hide what they thought
He can see clearly who they really are We many times spend our time hiding through false selfs Like Adam and Eve did with fig leaves We make up a glory because we are convinced we have none of our own Must ask: God, who am I? What do you think of me? What is my real name? The deeper reason we fear our own glory is that once we let others see the truest us - aka nakedness It is awkward when everyone else is veiled Living from your glory is the only way to live You cannot love another person from a false self You can not help others if you are in captivity yourself Our deepest fear of all - we will have to live from our hearts Means we do not know the next thing God will ask of us |

2010-10-05 - Contagious Christian - Impacting Your World (part 1) There are expectations everywhere, to have:
Many times the "ought to" comes through louder than the "how to" We need to focus on the important steps to have maximum impact We are the salt of the world - Matthew 5:13
Which did Jesus have in mind? We don't know |
2010-12-04 - Mission - Peter, From a Reed Peter was a reed blowing in the wind who became a rock whom God could build great things Jesus looked at Peter and saw what he could become Perhaps for the first time in Peter's life someone believed in him and had a vision that he could be someone great When we feel believed in, we feel loved The only thing that counts if faith expressing itself through love - Galatians 5:6 God looks at us for what we will become - Jeremiah 29:11 Viewing our day to day struggles and failures as their growth process on the way to becoming what God wants Peter was convinced of this It kept Peter coming back after his failures When Peter was asked if he wanted to leave, he said 'Lord, to whom shall we go?" - John 6:68-69 Think of all of Peter's heartbreaking failures....

2011-06-04 - Fearing God - Jacob feared Jacob had deceived his father and stolen the birthright from his brother Genesis 28:12-15 While fleeing to his uncle's house, God promised him 5 things:
When Jacob awoke, he was afraid His fear came from the realization that he had somehow been in the very presence of God The fear was not from being conscious of his sin but from his sense of awe The presence created a sense of being overwhelmed by his own nothingness in contrast to that which is supreme above all creatures He is infinitely above the powerful human beings who have ever lived |
2011-08-09 - Daughter Needs - All-Male Dad (part II) Lots priority:
There is a high cost to be paid when dad treats his daughter as 3rd rate They are prime targets for a smooth talking guy who offers some sense of male love Our daughters deserve 1st rate love Don't leave them to figure out what it will cost to be loved by a man Give them lots and lots of love, attention and time |
2011-08-20 - Fearing God - Holy Justice, Holy Mercy But God does not leave Isiah devastated We tend to think of justice in a positive sense - child murdered and the community wants to see justice The murder does not want to see justice The wages of sin is death - in this sense we don't want to see justice done God's justice is both holy and perfect God always wants to give mercy He can not be lenient and can not violate His own justice The solution is Christ - he reconciled God's justice and mercy The Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all - Isaiah 53:6 |
2011-10-12 - Genesis 12 - The Call of AbrahamSummaryGod told Abram, "Go. I will make you a great nation. You will be a blessing." In Egypt Abram lied about Sarai and Pharaoh was cursed. ObservationsGenesis 12:1 - Leave your country, your people Personal ApplicationI value comfort but it is not the same comfort that comes from God. When I look at my heart, I am slower to change then I used to be as a younger Christian. This should not be. What is stopping me from changing? Would I being willing to move again for God? |
2011-10-19 - Genesis 19 - Sodom is destroyedSummaryAngels took Lot out of Sodom. The city was destroyed by fire and Lot's wife was turned to salt. His daughters had children for him. ObservationsGenesis 19:14 - But his sons-in-law thought he was joking Personal ApplicationBy nature, I am a jokester. I have love to laugh - there is a time for everything. I need to learn how to take the important things seriously. When I hear a call from God to repent, not sure my immediate reaction is to change. I make excuses about doing things in the near future or lie to myself that I am doing OK. The costs are too great not to hear and obey the call. |
2012-01-22 - Ministry - With Jesus, You Will Not Stand Alone John 8: 1-11 Compromising circumstances were not sufficient evidence, as the Jewish law required witnesses who had seen the act. Imagine what this woman felt in the midst of an angry crowd eager to trap Jesus, she was caught in the act of adultery! She was humiliated and alone. The incident was staged to trap Jesus since the Romans did not allow the Jews to carry out death sentences. So if Jesus had said to stone her, he could have been in conflict with the Romans. If he had said no to stone her, he could have been accused of not being supportive of the law. So Jesus started to write on the ground, we could only imagine what he wrote, it could have been the list of sins. Then without disagreeing with the law he gave them a qualification to cast the first stone, it was whoever was without sin instead of whoever is without the sin of adultery. As Christians, even though we know that God sees all sins the same, we categorize sin and fall in to Satan's trap of self-righteousness. We forget that deceit, bitterness, envy and anger are just as bad as sexual immorality or murder. Jesus showed the woman compassion, mercy and also commanded her to leave her life of sin. We can only imagine the woman's sense of relief and gratitude. Her life will never be the same again. At the worst point of your life Jesus stood up for you, instead of letting you be condemned. 2012-01-28 - Ministry - Compromise or Conviction? John 6: 60-69; Luke 9: 57-62; Luke 14:25-33;Matt. 18:5-9 How many times do we face the decision to compromise our faith just to win the approval of people around us or to be so desperately accepted? We know we should be strong, we know we should have deep convictions and take a stand for God, but we give into the peer pressure at school, work, and the people-pleasing non-conflict avoiding sinful nature inside all of us! We want to be liked! We want to avoid confrontation, conflict, and courageously calling others out of sin! Jesus loved God and others so much he was willing to tell the truth no matter how it made someone feel! He preached what people needed to hear and not what they wanted to hear! He laid out the hard teachings with convictions not with apologies! Even when disciples decided to leave and no longer follow him, he did not compromise the truth! He let them leave and challenged others,"do you want to leave to?" Are you ready to die to compromise? What are the areas where you compromise your faith? Identify two areas that you consistently compromise in either at work, home or on campus? How often do you compromise? Share with your spouse, friends or d-group what you give-in to and your desire to want to change. |
2012-02-02 - Ministry - The Wild Man Mark 5:1-20 So often in our lives as disciples we can unfortunately relate to the wild demon-possessed man we see in the scriptures. In my own life there are times when I long to be able to meet and connect with Jesus and to go deeper in my relationship with God but have it cut short by anger, anxiety and frustration. It's at these times that I must examine the sin and the areas of my life that are out of control. Areas to examine:
V17- The people begged Jesus to leave, even after he performed such an amazing miracle. Why? Jesus represented the light! John 3:19-21 teaches us that the light has come into the world to expose darkness. You will not want Jesus around if you do not welcome exposure. Questions for thought:
Focus on the relationship, not on the sin. Learn how to love people in spite of the sin in their lives. |
2012-02-05 - Ministry - Touching Faith Mark 5:24b-34 This woman had been subject to a chronic disorder for 12 years of her life. Imagine for a minute the discouragement, doubt, devastation, and frustration of not being able to see this condition get better. In fact, it just got worse. Have you ever felt defeated about something in your life? Have you ever been discouraged for months about your marriage? Personal fruitfulness? Relationships? Then you can relate to this woman. One of the Satan's deadliest tactics is to keep people from being open about their lives. Sadly, many of us fall into this trap Satan has laid for us and we begin to live "double lives" in the Kingdom. We live a certain way in the world and a certain way at church. For a brief moment in her misery, she decided to have faith and touch him Jesus felt power leave him so he asked "Who touched me?" People stop, some get nervous, some put their heads down, some look at others. Everything is silent. The woman's conscience perhaps was pricked and she had a decision to make. She knew what she did and she knew what the right thing to do was. So she fell to her feet, trembling with fear, she told him the whole truth. But what she thought Jesus would do, he didn't do because he is not like you or me. She learned Jesus wanted to her to be open and tell the truth not because he wanted to scold her, admonish her, or even take the miracle back. He actually wanted to honor her. Question: What doubt or discouragement in your life is holding you back from being 100% sold out to God? Talk to your discipleship partner today about it. Getting "in touch" with it is the first step to change. |
2012-08-03 - Genesis 22 - The Offering of IsaacSummaryGod told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. As Abraham obeyed, an angel stopped him. The LORD provided a ram instead and blessed Abraham. ObservationsGenesis 22:2 - Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering Personal ApplicationI know for me I give until it starts to physically hurt, brings up bad memories, or I don't see the need to. It does not depend on me; I need to sacrifice in relation to the need. As I grow close to go God I will see God's heart in this. |
2012-11-02 - Centrality of the Heart (part II) The Christian life is a love affair of the heart It can not be lived primarily as a set of principles What must we do? Love the Lord your God with all of your heart - Luke 10:26 The truth of the gospel is intended to free us to love God If we ignore our heart and only try to live out our religion solely as correct doctrine or ethics, our passion is crippled What God cares about is the inner life, the life of the heart - Matthew 23:25-28 Our heart is the key to the Christian life - Isaiah 29:13 Paul - the hardness of the heart is behind all the addictions and evils of the human race - Romans 1:21-25 Above all we are to guard our heart It was from the longing of our hearts that most of us first responded to Jesus What changed? It is possible to recover from the lost life of the heart - we must leave what is familiar and comfortable Change our heart and go back to when we lived with our heart, a heart of a child - Mark 10:15 |
2013-08-27 - Hurtful Examples and Lies For some, hurtful things your father did and said to you over the years The question is whether or not you will allow it to hinder you or help you. We are to forgive like God forgives, completely - Ephesians 4:32 If you believe the same lies your father believed, you will also be bound by them. Truth doesn’t set you free if you only hear it and mentally understand it. Consider memorizing verses that stand against any lies you have believed. |
2013-09-14 - A Man Functions Independently A man of responsibility is also a man who can live independantly We are not be alone in life, and though we need one another in the body of Christ, if she is constantly nagging you, then you should learn to outpace her concerns. “I’ve already taken care of that” should be often flowing from your lips. We should be more like a thermostat, affecting circumstances, rather than like a thermometer.

2014-01-25 - Bless Your Children We need to boldly redefined success for them = “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” - Deuteronomy 6:5 1. God’s Word must “be on your heart.” Must always tell them how God is moving:
Every day gives you fresh, new material for making your life with Christ a front-row experience 2. Training your children to love God must occur within the context of close relationships. Talk about God is informal time:
Making disciples of all nations begins with your own children - it all starts with their hearts.

2014-05-30 - Genesis 24 - Search for the Bride of Isaac (part I)SummaryAbraham's servant went to Nahor to find a wife for Isaac. ObservationsGenesis 24:1 - The Lord blessed him every way Genesis 24:8 - But under no circumstances are you to take my son there ApplicationI am convicted by the way Abraham chose to approach challenging situations. He did not chose the easy way or the first way that sounded right. He chose to be faithful and had a conviction to allow God's promises to fulfilled in his life. I did not mediate and pray through the challenges set before very often. Many times I just say or do the first things that comes to my mind. Those are often thoughts of the easy way or only way to go about things. I need to think about the bigger picture when making decisions. PrayerPraying for heart of disernment and faithfulness in life's challenging situations. |
2015-02-11 - Lead By Example Everyone must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence - Jonah 3:7-8 The biggest enemy of godly leaders is not leading by example Leading by example has always been one of a leader's greatest goals
Jonah warned the Ninevites of God's coming judgement and wrath Their king responded by instructing his people to:
...in hopes that God would change his minds and spare the city The king of the Ninevites humility and leading by example saved his city from judgement and wrath When you do as you say in life, you make it far easier for everyone around you to do the same |

2015-03-01 - Heart of Worship Abram built an alter there and dedicated it to the Lord - Genesis 12:7 Ever thought about the power available through praise and worship of the heavenly Father? God inhabits the praise of his people - Psalm 22:3 Praise and worship are avenues through which we enjoy fellowship with God Abraham was a rich man who obeyed God's call to leave his home and travel to an unknown land Whenever he settled, Abraham always took time to build an alter and worship God Through the Holy Spirit, are you making praise and worship a key component of your daily life? |

2015-04-24 - Vows I will give the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me - Judges 11:30 As it would happen, the first to leave his house was Jephthah's daugther The Bible contains hundreds of God's conditional promises of blessings Jephthah's vow went terribiy wrong when he tried to set his own conidtions for blessing rather than appoarching God in faith Have you felt that you needed to offer God something to receive his promised blessing? You can't buy what God already wants to give you. |
2015-05-10 - Cure for Disappointment Didn't our hearts burns within us as he talked with us - Luke 24:32 If I look at myself, I am depressed When Jesus died, as the disciples saw it, all hope for a better life was gone At just the right moment, Jesus reveal himself to them When he disappeared from their sight, he took with him the pain, despair, and disappointment When you face situations that leave you feeling despressed, disappointed, and discouraged, look to Jesus |

Do you know anyone like Boaz? How can you be more like him? |
2015-06-24 - God's Presence Don't make us leave this place - Exodus 33:15 He who has God and many other things has no more than he who has God alone - C S Lewis Moses had an acute sense of his need for God's presence; Expereince brought him to this conculsion:
None of these things could have taken palce if God had not been with him As Moses was considering the trip to the Promised land, he did not want to take another step further without the assurance of God's presence The Promised Land without the Promise Giver didn't hold much promise How much does the presence of God mean to you? |

2015-10-01 - You'll See Leave your native country and go to the land I will show you - Genesis 12:1 God didn't give Abram a lot of details - Leave your lifelong home for the land I will show you He promised Abram to be a father of a great nation and the entire earth would be blessed through him - Genesis 12:2-3 There had to have been questions:

2015-11-03 - Couldn't Help It Then he went with Elijah as his assistant - 1 Kings 19:21 Elisha couldn't help becoming a prophet of the Lord Elijah approached him and silently threw his cloak over his shoulder, Elisha knew what he meant The Holy Spirit had touched his heart and he felt ready to leave everything to follow Elijah First let me go and kiss my father and mother goodbye - 1 Kings 1:19 Elisha had no choice in the matter, for it was God who had called him to leave everything and follow hi, When the Holy Spirit is allowed to have free reign in your life, you can do nothing but say yes when God calls you to serve Him |
