2009-05-06 - No one like him - His servant heart (part 1) People dream of having servants Most consider a servant’s life a life to avoid Jesus was willing to go to the lowest position
Jesus’ disciples were looking for a forceful liberator Suffering, serving were on Jesus’ agenda
2009-05-29 - No one like him - Conflict and Controversy (part 2) Like the earlier prophets, Jesus spoke bluntly to the religious leaders Ungodly religion must be rebuked; Nice words will not drive the point home; Too much is at stake Jesus did not enjoy the rebukes but wept over cities (Luke 19:41) Jesus made sharp contrasts between traditions and the word of God (Matthew 15:3) Religion that avoided sinners at all cost vs a religion that seeks after sinner at all cost The goal of a physician is not to spend time with the sick but to help the sick get well
2009-06-06 - One Another - Center of the Target Many people look at everything in God's will is the same weight - this leads to endless controveries over smaller details Jesus looked at God's will as a target Ex. Pharisees gave 1/10 of their spices but neglected the more important maters of the law - Matthew 23:23-24 Scriptures does not spell out what the second and third rings are Made it very clear what was at the center of the target

| ||||||||
2009-08-20 - Wild at Heart - Intro (part 2) Deep within man there are some fundamental questions Who am I? What am I made of? What am I destined for? Today’s man Endless hours at the computer Requires man to be efficient and punctual Is this what boys dream of? Where are the real men? Did you ever dream of being a nice guy? We are told we don’t know how to: Keep our promises Talk to our wives Raise our children Some women want passive men Wonder why they have no access to their heart God made the masculine heart – Come live out what I meant you to be He does not make generic people – man/women
2009-08-22 - Wild at Heart - Intro (part 4) Women want to be fought for She wants to be wanted She wants to be pursued Knight n shinning armor – core of the feminine heart and the life she knows she was made for She wants an adventure to share – part of the adventure She wants to be caught up into something greater than herself Every woman wants to have her beauty revealed “Do you see me?” “And are you captivated by what you see?” World kills woman’s heart – be tough, efficient, and independent No one is fighting for her (no adventure to swept up in) – doubts very much that she any beauty to unveil. Man must know he is powerful and know what it takes Woman must know she is beautiful and she is worth fighting for
2009-08-23 - Wild at Heart - Wild One whose image we bear Where do we come from? A man must know where he comes from and what he is made of both past and family fathers Most men are trying not to be like their fathers Who will they derive their sense of strength? To men God is: Distant and weak (How they would describe their father) Reminds us that life lived in fear is no life at all – all will die someday
2009-09-09 - Wild at Heart - The fathers voice (part 2) When we see Jesus, Joseph is out of the picture – true father God – he had to learn who he really was and made of. Initiation involves a journey and a series of tests. We try to make our lives easier. What are you trying to teach me here? What issues in my heart are you trying to rise through this? What is it you want me to see? What are you asking me to let go of? Men are taught that a wound that stops you from playing is a girlish wound. No wonder we walk with our guts hanging out Most men minimize their wound David did not act like this at all - openly - “my heart is wounded within me” - Psalms 109:22 Suck it up, as the saying goes God is fiercely committed to you Wound that goes unacknowledged and unwept is a wound that cannot heal You’ve embraced and deserve is a would that cannot heal Whatever is denied cannot heal Certainly denial that it’s shaping the way they live today.
2009-09-15 - Wild at Heart - Healing the wound (part 1) Source of real strength comes from the one that truly possess it. It was meant from the beginning that we have a desperately dependence on God “Apart from me you can do nothing” – We are made to depend on God God designed the human machine to run by itself Sin and our culture came together – prevent the wound from being healed – to be independent We believe deep in our hearts that if we need anything from anyone is a sort of weakness The Son could do nothing by himself – the Father and I are one Like trying to finish the marathon with a broken leg
2009-09-18 - Wild at Heart - Healing the wound (part 4) Forgiveness is a choice Do not wait for the feeling of wanting to forgive because it will not come Not “It didn’t matter” and “I probably reserved it” “It was wrong, it mattered, and I release you” Masculinity is passed from father to son Adam, Abraham, Jacob, David leaned who they were out of their intimacy with God the Father New heart and put a new spirit in you - Romans 8:1 What God sees when he see you is the real you, the true you, the man he had in mind when he made you You must ask God what he thinks of you, and you must stay with the question until you have an answer Last thing the Evil One wants you to
2009-10-15 - Wild at Heart - Offering our Strength (part 1) Man come to offer his strength, woman invites the man into herself Requires courage and vulnerability and selflessness for both of them Man must rise to the occasion, must move, women opens herself in stunning vulnerability Man spills himself - sweet is the death Life is created When a man withholds himself from his woman, he leaves her without the life only he can bring She is made for and craves words from him - Proverbs 18:21 If a man refuses to offer himself, then his wife will remain empty and barren Silent man starves his wife A man who leaves - he sacrifices them (wife and children) rather than for them Examples:
| ||||||||
2009-10-17 - Wild at Heart - Offering our Strength (part 3) She needs God more than she needs you You need him more than you need her You do not love her to get a good grade, you love her because that is what you are made to do Ruth: How does a good woman help her man to play the man? Arouse him to be a man Boaz offers her some protection and some food, but what Ruth really want was a ring Four options:
Will you fight for her? Stop being a nice guy and act like a warrior Pray for her like you never prayer for her before, OUT LOUD Step between her and the forces of darkness Not just once (some will do it 1,2, or 3 times) Man can only be justified by the measure of his sacrifice
2009-10-19 - Wild at Heart - An adventure to live (part 2) Most spend the energy of their lives trying to eliminate risk Their children hear “no” far more than they hear “yes” If a man succeeds in securing his life against all risk, he will wind up in a cocoon of self-protection and wonder why he is suffocating Seizing upon some sort of competence and rejecting anything that cannot be controlled This a refusal to trust God and reach out for control – runs deep in every man False self’s desire is to have power over experience – to control events and consequences - Mark 8:36 Too may men forsake their dreams because they aren’t willing to risk or fear they aren’t up to the challenge or are never told that those desire of the heart are good Soul of a man isn’t made for controlling things His job is charter to explore, build, conquer, and care for all creation If you had permission to do what you really wanted to do, what would you do? "How" is a faithless question – How is God’s department… Ask "what" What is written on your heart? What make you come alive? Don’t ask yourself what does the world need. Ask yourself what make you come alive and go do that because what the world needs is people who have come alive I’ve met men who’ve used advice like it was permission They are deceived about what they really want Goal of Christian discipleship is the transformed heart We move from boy who needs the Law to the man who is able to live by the Spirit of the Law Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit then you won’t feed on compulsion or selfishness
2009-10-21 - Wild at Heart - An adventure to live (part 4) The problem with modern Christianity is it’s obsession with principles Real test of a man comes when all his resources fail Living and loving – jump in with both feet Ask your wife what is wrong? Dangerous – very much a mystery She does not want to be solved; she wants to be known We know how to be nice but we really do not know how to fight Christian life should not be chaotic or be flagrantly irresponsible. Break away from it all and head off into the unknown God Adam - No formula for how he was to handle mess God honored and did not hold his hand Was not left alone to face life The only way to live in this adventure – is in an ongoing relationship with God Control we crave is an illusion – it in exchange for God’s relationship Moses and God knew each other David was after God’s own heart Jesus made God known – John 15:15 What are you teaching me here, God? What are you asking me to do or let of? What in my heart are you speaking to?
2009-10-23 - Repentance - What Happened (part 2) Congregation of consumers ultimately switches products, wholly dissatisfied with a church product
Like a doctor – it would be absurd to change their diagnose and treatment to the wants of the patient. Repentance is revival Questions:

2010-01-05 - Kingdom First - Helping Others to Make Peace Highest calling as peacemakers is to help other make peace with God We have been fitted with the feet of readiness that comes from the gospel of peace - Ephesians 6:15 Are proclaim peace to others - Isaiah 52:7 Jesus shed his blood so we could have peace He calls to die to ourselves so others can be made right with God Not superficial "world peace" but true peace in the heart of each man and women
2010-01-10 - Kingdom First - Majoring in the Minors Unless your righteousness surpasses the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven - Matthew 5:20 Pharisees:
Perfect salvation is not the basis of salvation Not a matter of making ourselves feel or look good, but to please God Do you struggle with this?
| ||||||||
2010-03-02 - To Live is Christ - Partners in the Gospel Philippians 1:16 Philippi was named for Philip of Macedon It was a roman colony - not actually a place one would expect the message of Jesus to take hold A roman jail is where you would expect Paul and Silas to be Paul made a career of being with other and influencing their lives - reduced to visits from the guards Through many hard times he had learned to overcome the most challenging of circumstances Five lines into the letter, Paul remembers his relationship with God and other disciples:
Only when we have been in the trenches with others will we have relationships that are full of life
2010-03-13 - To Live is Christ - No One Else Like Him Those with with the greatest impact are not the ones you expect Romans centurion - Matthew 8:5-10 Canaanite woman - Matthew 15:21-28 Timothy struggled with illness and fear made quite an impression on Paul
| ||||||||
2010-03-15 - To Live is Christ - No Confidence in Flesh Paul describes people who do not appreciate what Jesus has done as dogs - Philippians 3:14 There are 2 options to approaching God:
Man, in his pride, is drawn to the performance model Paul refers to the people who acknowledge Jesus as Lord but would not let go of the performance model These people held on to certain Jewish regulation that were made obsolete by Jesus The grace model is revolutionary Seems too easy to be true but too hard for our egos to accept Grace model says:

2010-04-28 - Heart of Maturity (Motivation of Maturing) Preached by John Lusk (2005-01-30) How passionate are you about maturing?
Motivation of Maturing 1. To regain your identify Genesis 1:26-27
2. To remian in Jesus 1 John 2:3-4 - This is a expectation from God 3. To be effective and productive 2 Peter 1:4-8
4. Secure salvation 2 Peter 1:8-11 - We have been given a new start Wrong motivation - Pleasing people, selfish ambition
2010-04-30 - I am Innocent of the Blood of all Men (part 1) Preached (2007-03-18) Paul - Innocent of the blood of all men Acts 20:17-27

2010-05-13 - Desire's Journey - Same Old Thing Something worse than the fall of man (losing paradise) = getting used to it
We have not solved the riddle of our existence Everyone else seems to be getting on with things. What is wrong with me? It is possible to run away from the desire for years but we are desire - essence of the human soul Our desire, if we listen, will save us from committing soul-suicide Same old thing would not be enough Life as usual us not the life we truly want It is not the life we were made for "All good things come to an end" is a lie We abandon the most important journey of our lives when we abandon desire Whatever we might gain, it is not worth it - Matthew 16:26
2010-05-16 - Desire's Journey - Battle Between Us What causes fights? Isn't it the evil desires within you? - James 4:1-2 The life we want is so far from the life we truly want. For longing to be filled - we need the cooperation of others We need others, it is part of our design Very few of our desire are self-fulfilling The world is indifferent to our desire We weren't made to be ignored We pretend it does not matter - it is doing damage to our souls Resentment - simmering anger at our blocked desires We pretend we have rise above it
2010-05-21 - Desire's Journey - Good News? The promise of life has been lost in the focus of knowledge and performance Pharisee knew more about the Bible than we ever will - and it hardened their hearts There were two trees in the garden of Eden:
Each church has its unspoken list of what you should and should not do We are told this is the good news We don't need more facts We don't need more things to do We need life You have made know to me the path of life - Psalms 16:11 My soul pants for you - Psalms 42:1-2 My soul thirsts for you - Psalms 63:1 Why did Jesus appeal to desire? Because it was essential for life He who has the Son has life - 1 John 5:12
2010-05-29 - Desire's Journey - Mocking Desire We want the adventure without the risk - ex. Only 5% of SUV ever go off-road Idols usually come in pairs: Nearby idol - gives a since of control Faraway idols - provides the taste of transcendence But the idols are impostors - we are taken by the array of choices we have but never have to stop and look at what we are doing Is your desire truly and deeply satisfied with these idols? Does the relief come more through the temporary absence of desire? We have found a powerful drug - distraction Sometimes we don't want to take a good, hard look at what we are really doing Used wood to make fire and cook with - then made an idol??? - Isaiah 44:16-17, 19-20
2010-07-11 - Desire's Journey - The Adventure Begins (part 3) You would expect:
More often than not we think of godliness only in moral terms We are made like God because we are to be like God on earth - Genesis 1:26 We humans beings are never happier than when we are expressing the deepest gifts that are truly us The opportunity reveals the our creative nature All we want is to be released to be who we are God has created us and our gifts for a place of his choosing Our creative nature is essential to who we are as image bearers It brings us great joy to live it out with freedom and skill
2010-07-13 - Desire's Journey - The Adventure Begins (part 5) Creation awaits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed - Romans 8:19 The kingdom of God prepared for you since the creation of the world - Matthew 25:31-34 He will put the faithful and wise servant in charge of all his possessions - Matthew 24:47 They will reign forever and ever - Revelation 22:5 We will take the position for which we have uniquely made and will rule with him Much of the activity of God in our lives brings us to the place where we can be entrusted To each their own Each person will live out the passion of their heart - given by God The kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it - Revelation 21:24 Hard to believe that we can add anything to the splendor of God That is exactly what we are designed for and what our future involves
2010-07-25 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 2) Paul learned the secret of being content - Philippians 4:12 Many Christians assume he no longer experienced the thirst of his soul Earlier Paul said he had not obtained his soul's desire nor already made perfect (complete) He was straining toward what was ahead - Philippians 3:12-14 Contentment is not freedom from desire but freedom of desire It is no longer being ruled by your desires We have 3 options:
Most of the church has chosen deadness Christians are called to live the life of holy longing but we don't like to stay there To live in thirst is to live with an ache Every addiction comes from the attempt to get rid of the ache Merely trying sets us on an unending chase that leads us farther and farther from home
2010-08-04 - Waking Dead - Arm Yourselves (part 1) What are God's intentions toward me? What is it I've come to believe? Heard that God cares and has some glowing promises given to us in Scripture The glory of God is man fully alive Jesus says he came to give life I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full - John 10:10 Whoever believes in me - streams of living water will flow from within him - John 7:38 Life is all over the scriptures: You have made known to me the path of life - Psalms 16:11 In him was life and that life was the light of men - John 1:4 Come to me to have life - John 5:40 Tell the people the full message of this new life - Acts 5:20
2010-08-21 - Waking Dead - Last Adam Paul refers to Jesus as the Last Adam and the Second Man - 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 Adam and Eve were rulers over all creation and glorious image bearers of God Their choices would forever shape our lives - chose to disobey the one command they were given Fruit does not fall far from the tree Parents often wonder where their toddler learn how to be disobedient It was taught to them - it is inherent to human nature Through one man disobedience - many were made sinners - Romans 5:12 A man comes down from heaven, slips into the world unnoticed as:
| ||||||||
2010-08-23 - Waking Dead - Life to the Full Christ died for us but he also raised for us His resurrection was as much for us as his death was Count yourself dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus - Romans 6:11 God made us alive with Christ - Ephesians 2:5 We received our sinful nature from Adam - now we receive a good and holy nature from Christ God plan is not to just forgive you but restore you Make a good tree and its fruit will be good - Matthew 12:33 The covenant has two parts: I will give you a new heart and spirit, remove the heart of stone and flesh - Ezekiel 36:26 I have come that they may have life and it to the full - John 10:10
2010-08-25 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 2) Your story does not begin with sin but with glory Bible does not start in Genesis 3 but Genesis 1 God is glorious You are his offspring, his child You bear his image When he made all His creation before man he said "it was good" Only after did he make humans did he say "it is very good" - Genesis 1:31 Your glory is greater than everything else made - oceans, mountains, stars, the universe Saints in the land are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight - Psalms 16:3 Those he justified, he also glorified - Romans 8:30 The fact that you don't see your good heart and glory is proof has effective the assault has been Lion King example It is time for the true king to come back and take over But Simba does not believe who he is His father was murdered and the enemy blamed it on him After years of loosing heart, Simba's father appears to him in a vision: you are more than what you have become The one who is in you is greater than the one in the world - 1 John 4:4
2010-08-27 - Waking Dead - Guided Narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few will find it - Matthew 7:14 Each day: do you wake to tackle a to do list or wake in the midst of a dangerous story? If you are not pursuing a dangerous quest, then you do not need a guide If you want the life Jesus offers, then you are going to need more than a handful of principles Can not possibly prepare yourself for ever situation We need God intimately and we need him desperately You have made know the path of life - Psalms 16:11 There is a narrow path to life and we need help finding it Example path from a church:
All religions has principles to follow but only Christianity can teach you to walk with God The most important thing of all is intimacy with God Those who only do good things - Jesus will say I never knew you - Matthew 7:23 Teach a man to fish? Teach a man to walk with God and you help him solve the rest of his life
2010-08-28 - Waking Dead - Wisdom and Heart Our heart has been made good by work of Christ but we haven't learned how to live from it Launching out with an untrained heart can bring disaster We can easily be shamed into sin management and think our heart is bad The church choose those who had both wisdom and the Spirit - Acts 6:3 We need both Wisdom is crying out
Solomon was so sharp because he had a wise and discerning heart - 1 Kings 3:9 But wisdom is not enough
The common sense life can be the enemy of the supernatural life
2010-09-02 - Waking Dead - Ask God
When Christ arose, he did not let Peter sweep the whole matter under the rug - John 21:15-17 It would have haunted the old fisherman for the rest of his life Most of us try to "put things behind us"
Jesus was asked would he feed his sheep times - for each betrayal Lessons that have been laid down in pain can be accessed only by pain Christ must open the wound not just bandage it over Instead of burying the pain, ask God what he is wanting to speak to you
2010-09-07 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 4) We need time in the presence of the Lord - Pslam 86:11-12
We declare the authority of Jesus over our hearts - he made our hearts - Psalms 33:15 He has redeemed our hearts - Romans 2:29 Sometimes he will take us back to a memory, a time and place where a shattering blow was given Anytime someone says, "I feel like there's this part of me..." we need to listen - somewhere in the heart Hidden many times because of a false comfort
