2010-07-04 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 1) To know and to be known. It is our deepest ache. Love makes us to crazy things for love. No union on earth like the consummation of love between a man and woman Becoming one - this is what God is seeking with us Bible is the greatest romance ever written |
2010-07-06 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 3) On that day, Jesus appears and announces himself as the Bridegroom - Matthew 9:15 Jesus makes his proposal: I will prepare a place for you - John 14:2-3 We have become betrothed to the Bidegroom The whole life of the good Christian is a holy longing - Augustine |
2010-07-08 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 5) God create male and female in his own image - Genesis 1:27 God does not have a body so it must be at the level of the soul Men bear the image of God in their dangerous, inviting strength It is the nature of love to be generous Jesus tells us to not to fear death God is not the God of dead but of the living - Luke 20:38
|
2010-07-16 - Desire's Journey - Deeper Desire (part 3) The first step in the journey of desire is to stop pretending that we would be happy with less Recovering our heart involves facing our deepest disappointments We do not need to fear what we find because our heart is our biggest ally The father of lies takes many people out of the journey for life by keeping them in shallow desire He threatens us from going to the deep waters of desire by telling us that are core desires are evil Makes us thing that every thought and desire is our own I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; remove your heart of stone - Ezekiel 36:26 Our core desires are good: I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts - Jeremiah 31:33 We still struggle with sin with our tendency to kill desire or give our hearts over to false desires |
2010-07-27 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 4) If we do not give our ache a voice, it does not go away It becomes an undercurrent of our addictions Pleasure becomes necessary in larger and larger doses The paradox of grief is that it is healing - somehow it restores our souls Control is the enemy; grief is our friend When we let go of controlling, something better takes its place - mourning Comfort is in store for those who mourn and healing for the brokenhearted - Isaiah 61 This idea was the center of Jesus' mission None of this makes sense until we admit our brokenheartedness and give our sorrow a voice in mourning Only then will we know His comfort Solomon said that it is better to go to the house of mourning that it is to a house of feasting We need to mourn, it is the only way our hearts can remain both free and alive in this world |
2010-08-18 - Waking Dead - Point of all Living Everything you love is what makes a life worth living Action: Set down the book and make a list of all the things you love
Jesus was asked what was most important He boiled it down to loving God and loving others - everything else will fall into place The heart is the connecting point; can not love without it If we can truly love, be loved, and never lose love - we would be finally truly happy If we worship efficiency, we can not grow in our love Some try to master all sort of principles and and never know God intimately, heart to heart. If do all sorts of Christian things without knowing God, he will say "I never knew you" - Matthew 7:22-23 The point is not the activity but intimacy with God Taking a course on anatomy won't help you love you spouse Taking a religion class will not help you love God You will find God when you seek him with all of your heart - Jeremiah 29:13 |
2010-08-31 - Waking Dead - Our Story (part 1) Our life is a story We need someone to walk with us God has given us the Counselor - the Spirit of truth - John 14:16-17 We need someone that makes thing clear and true Not just an annual checkup but all the time The purpose of the Christian life is that our hearts might be restored and set free That is what Jesus came to do All sorts of damage has been done to your heart
Even our laughter is out of heartache - Proverbs 14:13 We are told to trust in the Lord (Proverb 3:5) - it is second nature to worry We are told to love one another deeply (1 Peter 1:22) - that is very rare The answers lie deeply in our heart The heart of a man is deep waters, but a man of understanding draws him out - Proverbs 20:5 |
2010-09-18 - Waking Dead - Spiritual Warfare (part 6) We must be careful that the religious does not turn discipleship into a soul-killing exercise Counseling "medicine" for the sick patients can cause an endless cycle of always relying on the meds instead of focusing on a solution Hope deferred makes the heart sick - Proverbs 13:12 So the wounds of the heart are never healed A religious spirit makes it next to impossible foe a person to break free by spreading the belief there is no war
If it does not restore the image of God and rejoice in the heart, it is not Christianity |
2010-10-05 - Contagious Christian - Impacting Your World (part 1) There are expectations everywhere, to have:
Many times the "ought to" comes through louder than the "how to" We need to focus on the important steps to have maximum impact We are the salt of the world - Matthew 5:13
Which did Jesus have in mind? We don't know |
2010-10-06 - Contagious Christian - Impacting Your World (part 2) You are the light of the world - Matthew 5:14 What does the light do? Makes things visible and helps us see them for what they really are God made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of knowledge of the glory of God We must not cover or obscure the light in any way - Matthew 5:15-16 The Clear Communication (CC - in the formula) must consist of and understanding of:
Make an honest assessment about your evangelism Which are you?

2011-05-23 - Righteousness over feelings Righteousness over feelings John 8:30-32 The Jews felt like they were being righteous.
When are we Jesus’ disciples? When we feel saved? Jesus says that we must obey before we will know the truth. How? What can we be set free from if we obey? |
2011-06-10 - Mind of Christ - Intro (part III) The heart is the source which continuously supplies your life with the kind of person you are.

2011-08-17 - Daughter Needs - Spiritual Nourishment There are many standards/examples in which to live in the Bible A godly woman - Proverbs 31 Qualities of an elders' or deacons' wife - 1 Timothy 3 Our most important spiritual goal with our daughters is to ensure they believe in God and His Son - John 6:28-29 Fathers should bring their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord Father needs to correct his children when they stray Father needs to help their daughters understand that he still loves her when she makes a mistake Those who knows God's name will trust in Him - Psalms 9 Fathers have a lifelong responsibility to spiritual nourishment to the family I need to be in the Word everyday to be able to feed my family |
2011-09-28 - Proverbs on Advice - Without Instruction 4. Without instruction, you hurt others Proverbs 10:17 - He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray John Donne wrote, “No man is an island entirely to himself, every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main” When (in our independence) we disregard godly advice, we hurt others as well as ourselves. We set an example which by action and attitude say that we do not need others in our lives 5. Without instruction we are stupid Proverbs 12:1 - Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid The Bible uses the word “stupid”. It’s found only four times in the NIV (Job 18:3, Proverbs 12:1, Ecclesiastes 10:3, 2 Timothy 2:23)
Challenge: How do you respond when someone challenges you?

2011-12-24 - Day 21 - Rejoice in Persecutions Matthew 5:10-11
Application: Let verse 42 be your theme today and every day. |
2012-01-21 - Ministry - Faith in God Moves Mountains Mark 11:22-24 Jesus makes a very simple short powerful statement; "Have faith in God." Believe in ME and you will be able to move mountains. Jesus had the faith to move mountains. Jesus calls each of us to have a faith that can move mountains. Each of us has mountains or obstacles in our lives. These obstacles take on many different forms. They may be character sins that never seem to change, family situations that seem to continue month after month, and financial debt that never seems to go away. These obstacles sometimes seem as large and permanent as mountains. But Jesus tells us to "Have faith in God", to believe in our hearts, and the mountains can be thrown into the sea. It is a very simple, but powerful statement, "Have faith in God." What mountain is secretly holding back your faith? How much have you put it before God? Decide today to lay it out before God and really believe that He can change it. Fight against cynicism and unbelief. |
2012-01-23 - Ministry - Unless You Change Matthew 18:2-4 Deeply rooted in the mature of adults is a strong sense of resistance to change. Even when we feel deeply discontent with our lives, we are more willing to stay in the familiarity of our misery than to venture into the untested waters of change. Fortunately, Jesus, in his desire to put us out of our misery, makes it clear that for a Christian to make it to heaven we must keep on changing. We must choose to grow even if it is challenging, difficult, tiring, confusing or scary. Why this strong direction? Because there is just so much about our hearts, character, habits, lives that the Lord wants to change! Too many souls will be lost if we stop growing. Jesus gives us the secret to change in the same verse - humble yourself. Thank God we live in a kingdom where the Lord rushes to help the humble. He will send the word, wise advice from a disciple, a protecting angel, and a physical blessing, all to the humble. It seems that we have two choices: Be humbled or get humbled. Questions:

2012-01-24 - Ministry -The Miracle of Training Luke 6:39-40 Have you ever felt stuck in the mud in your Christian life? Feeling like you can't change? God's way to help us to change and grow spiritually is through discipleship. In Mark 1:17, Jesus said, "Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men." The beauty of God's plan is that whatever we lack in our character, He makes up the difference as long as we have the heart to imitate Jesus. God blesses us with spiritual people who we can imitate and be trained by. Remember as a child when you wanted to be "grown up" and would copy mom or dad. You tried to talk like them and dress up like them because you wanted to be just like them. What happened to our childlike heart to imitate? You don't have to have all the answers, or be smart or talented to be just like Jesus---all you need is the heart to imitate and want to be trained. Would people say that you remind them of your discipleship partner? Why or why not? Today tell your discipleship partner one characteristic that you admire about them and ask them how you can be more like that. |
2012-02-22 - Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens. 1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21 God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind. 2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8 We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples. Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I. Decisions:

2013-08-23 - Becoming a Chain Breaker (part II) When we commit sin, we actually become the “slave of sin” - John 8:34 If the Son makes you free you will be free indeed - John 8:36 Our freedom comes in Christ The same power God used to raise Jesus from the dead, he uses to our most stubborn, ground-in habits. True repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is the solution. The more we discover who God is, the more we will love, fear, and respect Him. Half hearted repentance want freedom from guilt rather than intimacy with their Maker. Instead of “divorcing” themselves from sin, they opt for a “temporary separation” God’s love satisfies where sin could not - John 4: 13–14; 1 John 2:15– 17 Then the restlessness from guilt and indecision can end because your conscience is clear and your mind made up. Falling becomes abnormal rather than routine. Freedom becomes a daily reality. Isn’t that what we all really want? |
2013-09-11 - Men Leave Childhood Behind We need to choose to let go of childishness and foolishness Clinging to childhood while growing into manhood is like trying to run in opposite directions at the same time aka the “Peter Pan Syndrome” Teen years are often wasted and fathers have become silent. Rather than initiating serious conversations with wiser men, they goof off with fools in sports bars Too many men want the freedoms, rewards, and privileges of manhood but only the responsibilities of boyhood Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ - Ephesians 4:14-15 Do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature - 1 Corinthians 14:20 The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands - Isaiah 32:8 |
2013-09-12 - A Man Embraces Responsibility Men are happiest and at their best when they are responsible We must resolve to fully embrace all of our responsibilities before God Responsibility = you are being entrusted and empowered by a higher authority to care for something or someone The first thing God did after creating Adam, was to give him responsibilities. He placed him in the garden “to cultivate it and keep it” - Genesis 2:15 Sin makes men tend to resist responsibility, but embracing it is part of our manhood It is a relatively modern invention that establishes teen years as a moratorium on responsibility and prolongs childhood indefinitely. When a young man is passive and irresponsible, he greatly limits his freedoms, opportunities, and successes. Responsibility calls us to action and tests us. It reveals our character. The more maturity a man has, the more responsibility God can trust him with. Embrace responsibility! Love it. Live it. Teach it to your children. If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward” - Luke 12:42-43 |
2013-10-21 - Resolve to Lead Your Family The greater responsibility to raise your children is yours. When the dad leads, kids are up to twenty times more likely to stay in church long-term than when moms are the spiritual leaders at home

2013-11-30 - Holy Matrimony God alone designed the marvelous mystery of marriage. |
2015-03-06 - Earnest Prayer Epaphras always prays earnestly for you - Colossians 4:12 Early African converts were known for their commitment to prayer So much so their prayer spots were marked with worn paths to them If prayer was negligneted, it could be easily spotted - "Brother, the grass grows on your path" Epaphras demonstrated such genuine love for the Colossians and played a big role in establishing the church there - Colossians 1:17 He practiced three important elements of prayer
Can you make room for regular time of prayer on the behalf of those you love? Nothing makes more of a difference in your walk with Christ than regular times of prayer |
2015-03-12 - When to Retreat Run from all these evil things - 1 Timothy 6:11 Every competent military strategist needs to understand when to retreat Retreat does not mean defeat but simply makes room for a later victory Pau's battle plan called for Timothy to handle certain types of temptations with a retreat It wasn't just a retreat but a counter attack with something good - fath, love, perseverance, and gentleness This pursuit would shelter Timothy from temptations of the world God instruct you to retreat from certain kinds of tempatation and pursue things that hold out the promise of a spiritual productive future |
2015-08-06 - Hearing God What are you doing here, Elijah? - 1 Kings 19:13 With all the noise life makes, it can be difficult to hear God Although he had preached and performed miracles, the people refused to listen Elijah Elijah had death threats and was hiding in a cave in fear and despair - desperately needing to hear from God God wanted to speak to Elijah:
All were forerunners of the rela deal was to follow - then Elijah heard God's voice and poured out his broken heart and then just listened Can you hear God above life' everyday noise?

2015-12-19 - Enemy of Self Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan - Judges 13:24-25 The man who learns to put himself aside is the one who makes a difference for God's kingdom From the time Samson was a boy, the Spirit began to stir within him That is when self got in the way Something went wrong between God's Spirit and Samson Samson didn't use the gifts of God had given him as a leader and deliever God called him to be He used his gifts for his own agenda:
God gave Samson all the strength he needed to succeed Samson squandered an opportunity for greatness and left a legacy of pride Will you use your gifts for his benefit or just for yourself? |
