2009-11-08 - Repentance - Transfigure Our Minds (part 1) We each have a worldview or mindset that functions as a life lens World has been squeezing us into its mold – more than we realize Peter’s mind
Prepare your minds for action – 1 Peter 1:13-14 Space shuttle takes 2,250,000 pounds of fuel to escape the earth’s gravity Only few pounds to remain in orbit – Christians are called more than just to orbit Most trials produce greater faith – hospitalized child, illness, death, ministry turmoil, financial pressures Ways to fight – devote time to prayer, read scripture, explore ways to encourage wife, get advice from elders, spend special time with the kids Ways to not to – laziness, frustrate wife, neglect kids, feeling overwhelmed and under underappreciated, escape to the TV

2009-12-27 - First the Kingdom - Ease of Meekness Generally, being meek is not appealing Meek is equated with weak - but this is not true Greek word for "meek" - used to describe a stallion once it had been broken and had become teachable We can be become meek if we confront our sin and experience godly sorrow In the Bible, meekness is associated with humility and gentleness This meekness has no relation to a timid or retiring character It is: I need God and am totally open to whatever Moses was said to be very meek - Numbers 12:3 Jesus himself was said to be meek - 2 Corinthians 10:1
2010-01-16 - Kingdom First - Above and Beyond (part 2) If someone forces you to go one mile; go two - Matthew 5:41-42 3. Addressed going to the extra mile Roman law said you were required to carry a certain amount of baggage to another place Such a law and its frequent use of it cause great resentment among the Jews Jesus said we should go beyond what our authorities required Message condemns any resentment we may feel against a legitimate authority If reform seems necessary, we should seek it - 1 Corinthians 7:21-23 Should be done with lawful means God demonstrates his own love for us He gave up revenge, rights, and his energy for us While we were sinners, Christ died for us - Romans 5:6-7

2010-07-10 - Desire's Journey - The Adventure Begins (part 2) The first thing in the Bible is God working The morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy - Job 38:7 Jesus said his Father is always at work to this very day and he too is working - John 5:17
God loves his work God delights in doing tall these things
2010-07-25 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 2) Paul learned the secret of being content - Philippians 4:12 Many Christians assume he no longer experienced the thirst of his soul Earlier Paul said he had not obtained his soul's desire nor already made perfect (complete) He was straining toward what was ahead - Philippians 3:12-14 Contentment is not freedom from desire but freedom of desire It is no longer being ruled by your desires We have 3 options:
Most of the church has chosen deadness Christians are called to live the life of holy longing but we don't like to stay there To live in thirst is to live with an ache Every addiction comes from the attempt to get rid of the ache Merely trying sets us on an unending chase that leads us farther and farther from home
2010-07-27 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 4) If we do not give our ache a voice, it does not go away It becomes an undercurrent of our addictions Pleasure becomes necessary in larger and larger doses The paradox of grief is that it is healing - somehow it restores our souls Control is the enemy; grief is our friend When we let go of controlling, something better takes its place - mourning Comfort is in store for those who mourn and healing for the brokenhearted - Isaiah 61 This idea was the center of Jesus' mission None of this makes sense until we admit our brokenheartedness and give our sorrow a voice in mourning Only then will we know His comfort Solomon said that it is better to go to the house of mourning that it is to a house of feasting We need to mourn, it is the only way our hearts can remain both free and alive in this world
2010-08-25 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 2) Your story does not begin with sin but with glory Bible does not start in Genesis 3 but Genesis 1 God is glorious You are his offspring, his child You bear his image When he made all His creation before man he said "it was good" Only after did he make humans did he say "it is very good" - Genesis 1:31 Your glory is greater than everything else made - oceans, mountains, stars, the universe Saints in the land are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight - Psalms 16:3 Those he justified, he also glorified - Romans 8:30 The fact that you don't see your good heart and glory is proof has effective the assault has been Lion King example It is time for the true king to come back and take over But Simba does not believe who he is His father was murdered and the enemy blamed it on him After years of loosing heart, Simba's father appears to him in a vision: you are more than what you have become The one who is in you is greater than the one in the world - 1 John 4:4
2010-09-08 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 5) Our sin give the enemy a certain claim to our lives - Romans 6:16 As we renounce any sin, we also renounce any claim we've given to Satan in our lives This often comes in the form of "agreements" - Satan has suggested something to us and we have said yes.
As long as we have unhealed places in our hearts, it is next to impossible to live in freedom and victory No matter how much discipline we apply to it Our enemy knows them well and trying undermine us and uses it against us with a disabling effect
2010-09-21 - Waking Dead - Fellowship of the Heart The first Christians were called "followers of the Way" - Acts 9:2 They found the Way of Life and had given themselves over to it:

Seekers are not impressed with spinelessness Seekers are trying to make up their own minds about what to do with the claims of Christ When a believer speaks up, they are forces to deal with the implication for their lives A Roman centurion watched as Jesus

2010-10-30 - Contagious Christian - Barriers to Relationships (part I) Biblical Issues with understanding what friendships are in the Bible can be barriers to relationships Some feel that befriending people who are irreligious is questionable and maybe unbiblical A look at a few examples of some verses misunderstood James 4:4 - says not to be friends with the world 1 John 2:15-17 - world is referring to sin and evil that people commit, not to the people themselves We need to keep ourselves from being polluted by the world John 17:14 - we are not of this world is sometimes interpreted that we should not associate with people outside of God's family My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one - John 17:15-18 Jesus' purpose was to seek and save what is lost, he had to have relationships in the world to accomplish this - Luke 19:10 2 Corinthians 6:17 - Come out from them and be separate; avoid being yoked with unbelievers Not referring to everyday friendships but more formal alliances Paul in an earlier letter said that ordinary interactions with non-Christians is right and necessary - 1 Corinthians 5:9-10 Jesus was a friend of tax collectors and sinners - Luke 7:34
2010-10-31 - Contagious Christian - Barriers to Relationships (part II) 1 Corinthians 15:33 - Bad company corrupts good character
Jesus not only risked his reputation but ruined it He was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard - Luke 7:34 Tells you want kind of people He was around Jesus said that He associated with sinners because they are sick people that need a doctor - Matthew 9:12-13 The danger was that the doctor may be mistaken as one of His patients The religious people mutter how inappropriate it was for Him to associate with such disreputable people Jesus cared much about the lost than his reputation
2010-11-27 - Mission - All Nations The only event in history where all mankind gathers together is Judgment Day An expert in the law asked "What I do to inherit eternal life?" and "Who is my neighbor?" This expert had given his life to study of the scriptures Jesus illustrates the greatest commandment - one man helping another Does not talk about:
James 2:14-16 - Do you claim to have faith? It is never alone Food, clothing, a blanket shows that you have saving faith Christian who "share their faith" don't always "share their food" Sometimes we resemble the expert in the law who did not love their neighbor By focusing on helping the poor, many people seem to become more evangelistic Physical and spiritual needs are inseparable Jesus said, I was hungry, of need of clothes, sick. Did you help him? - Matthew 25:35-36 He takes it personally - Jesus grew up poor Doves were the sacrifice of the poor - Luke 2:24
2010-12-04 - Mission - Peter, From a Reed Peter was a reed blowing in the wind who became a rock whom God could build great things Jesus looked at Peter and saw what he could become Perhaps for the first time in Peter's life someone believed in him and had a vision that he could be someone great When we feel believed in, we feel loved The only thing that counts if faith expressing itself through love - Galatians 5:6 God looks at us for what we will become - Jeremiah 29:11 Viewing our day to day struggles and failures as their growth process on the way to becoming what God wants Peter was convinced of this It kept Peter coming back after his failures When Peter was asked if he wanted to leave, he said 'Lord, to whom shall we go?" - John 6:68-69 Think of all of Peter's heartbreaking failures....

If we could truely grasp the significance of Jesus being with you - radically change the face of evangelism We are commanded to preach whether we want to or not - 1 Corinthians 9:17 Jesus reminded Paul that He was with him and that is all Paul needed When we find ourselves timid, we need to remind ourselves who is with us

2011-06-04 - Fearing God - Jacob feared Jacob had deceived his father and stolen the birthright from his brother Genesis 28:12-15 While fleeing to his uncle's house, God promised him 5 things:
When Jacob awoke, he was afraid His fear came from the realization that he had somehow been in the very presence of God The fear was not from being conscious of his sin but from his sense of awe The presence created a sense of being overwhelmed by his own nothingness in contrast to that which is supreme above all creatures He is infinitely above the powerful human beings who have ever lived

2011-08-26 - Fearing God - Mystery Too High God work contrary to how we would God wisdom is infinite; ours in finite We tend to assume we would understand if God would just explain We don't believe that "his understanding no one can fathom - Isiah 40:28 On the road to Emmaus, they said "they hoped Jesus was the one going to redeem Israel - Luke 24:21 They did not understand what God was doing even doing even as it was unfolding Unexplained setback may never be understood Paul planned to sail to Rome and Spain but ended up in jail for 2 years - Acts 24:27 Humility should be a hallmark those who fear God I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me - Psalms 131:1
2011-09-04 - Fearing God - Going Deep (part II) Our attitude is the most important thing when it comes to Bible study We need a Teachable spirit Avoid becoming like the Jew who Jesus said to stop thinking you gain eternal life from just reading the scriptures - John 5:39-40 We need a Spirit of dependence Proverbs 2 - We should call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding God has hidden things from the "wise" and revealed them to children Childlike simplicity and humility go hand-in-hand with teachable spirit Self-opinionated are neither dependent nor teachable We need to be diligent Proverbs 2 describes this attitude:
Digging is labor intensive
2011-09-07 - Followup: Grace (part II) Grace is almost too good to be true, but it is. The goal of this study is to help you to see the real God who loves you and how valuable you are to him. He valued you at the cost of his only Son, whom he gave up so that thee could be grace to forgive your sins and restore your relationship with him. Psalms 103:8-10
Matthew 18:21-35
As you continue your walk with God picture yourself in a world of God’s grace. And remember every time you stumble or fall down your landing in God’s grace. Just get back up and continue on in God’s grace. Not once, not twice, not seven times but continue on in God’s grace for eternity.

2011-10-03 - Genesis 3 - The Fall of Man SummaryThe serpent deceived the woman; she and Adam ate from the tree. Man blamed woman, woman blamed the serpent. The earth became cursed, and God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden. ObservationsGenesis 3:1 - Did God really say Personal ApplicationI need to be aware of Satan's tricks continuously. He does not want to be noticed. I need to pray and reflect on how I am living my life and find where Satan is getting me to deviate even a fraction of a degree. I need also examine my thought and find out they are out of line with God's Word. I will ask others what they see where I have taken a devour on God's narrow road.
2011-10-06 - Genesis 6 - The Flood (part I)SummaryHumankind corrupted the earth with evil. God decided to destroy them. He told Noah to build an ark to be saved from the flood. ObservationsGenesis 6:5 - every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time Personal ApplicationIncrease my faith, Lord! I see Noah's faith to build an ark and I struggle to have faith today. The struggles I face today are not even a speck compared to Noah's troubles. Noah had great faith because he trusted God and what he said. That is what I need to do.
2011-10-15 - Genesis 15 - Abraham Believed God SummaryThe Lord promised Abram an heir and many descendants. Abram believed. He was told that they would be enslaved but would then return. ObservationsGenesis 15:6 - Abram believed the LORD ... credited it to him as righteousness Personal ApplicationSometimes I believe that perseverance is my strength but as I look at my prayers for the desires of my heart, I give up way easily. "But it has not happened in 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years" - I say. Abram waited until he was 100 years for his son to be born.
2011-10-18 - Genesis 18 - Abraham prays for SodomSummaryThree visitors came and said that Sarah would have a son next year. Sodom was very evil; Abraham pleaded with the LORD for the city. 2012-01-13 - Genesis 20 - Abraham lies about Serah at GerarSummaryIn Gerar Abraham said, "Sarah is my sister." King Abimelech took her but God warned him in a dream. He restored Sarah to Abraham. ObservationsGenesis 20:3 - You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken Personal ApplicationI usually don't have an issue with knowing right from wrong. It is usually that I am not aware of what I am doing. I am either not paying attention or not focused. I need to watch my life closely so I will be righteous in God's eyes and so others can be saved because of it [1 Timothy 4:16].
2012-01-22 - Ministry - With Jesus, You Will Not Stand Alone John 8: 1-11 Compromising circumstances were not sufficient evidence, as the Jewish law required witnesses who had seen the act. Imagine what this woman felt in the midst of an angry crowd eager to trap Jesus, she was caught in the act of adultery! She was humiliated and alone. The incident was staged to trap Jesus since the Romans did not allow the Jews to carry out death sentences. So if Jesus had said to stone her, he could have been in conflict with the Romans. If he had said no to stone her, he could have been accused of not being supportive of the law. So Jesus started to write on the ground, we could only imagine what he wrote, it could have been the list of sins. Then without disagreeing with the law he gave them a qualification to cast the first stone, it was whoever was without sin instead of whoever is without the sin of adultery. As Christians, even though we know that God sees all sins the same, we categorize sin and fall in to Satan's trap of self-righteousness. We forget that deceit, bitterness, envy and anger are just as bad as sexual immorality or murder. Jesus showed the woman compassion, mercy and also commanded her to leave her life of sin. We can only imagine the woman's sense of relief and gratitude. Her life will never be the same again. At the worst point of your life Jesus stood up for you, instead of letting you be condemned. 2012-01-24 - Ministry -The Miracle of Training Luke 6:39-40 Have you ever felt stuck in the mud in your Christian life? Feeling like you can't change? God's way to help us to change and grow spiritually is through discipleship. In Mark 1:17, Jesus said, "Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men." The beauty of God's plan is that whatever we lack in our character, He makes up the difference as long as we have the heart to imitate Jesus. God blesses us with spiritual people who we can imitate and be trained by. Remember as a child when you wanted to be "grown up" and would copy mom or dad. You tried to talk like them and dress up like them because you wanted to be just like them. What happened to our childlike heart to imitate? You don't have to have all the answers, or be smart or talented to be just like Jesus---all you need is the heart to imitate and want to be trained. Would people say that you remind them of your discipleship partner? Why or why not? Today tell your discipleship partner one characteristic that you admire about them and ask them how you can be more like that.
2012-02-01 - Ministry - Intimidated or Inspired? Matthew 23:1-7 The austere lifestyles of the Pharisees were not ones that Christ wanted us to imitate. They said all the right things and lived in all the wrong ways. People felt burdened around the Pharisees because they knew they could not match up to that kind of lifestyle. The Pharisees were not just legalists; they were separatists, which is what the word Pharisee means. They were men preaching a life too big for them to live. They did not readily inspire the average Jew to follow them. People were afraid of them. They lead by intimidation rather than by inspiration. In vs. 5, Jesus chastises them for doing everything for men to see. In vs.6 he condemns their obsession with position and again in vs. 7, Jesus rebukes their love of role. They did not attract the kind of following that Jesus did and this made them bitter and envious. They did not really have the hearts of the people because they had only a heart for themselves. Do you call attention to yourself? Do you focus on your position or your role and get angry when it is not what you want? A person focused on men, role, or position will not want to serve and therefore will not inspire, only intimidate. Find some way, even small way, in which you can serve or encourage someone today. This will be an inspiration to them and to you.
2012-02-08 - Ministry - One Thing Mark 10:17-22 Can you imagine having a little one on one time with Jesus? What do you think you would ask? What would he say? If Jesus was to challenge you on something in your life, what do you think it would be? He did have a similar conversation with a rich man in Mark 10:17-22 and the rich man asked a pretty important question, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus responds with emphasizing obedience to the commands, and the rich man insists that he has been obedient to those Jesus spoke of. Then Jesus tells him, "one thing you still lack," he said, "go sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." So, what was the rich man missing? What did he still lack? Was it a love for the poor? Was he not sacrificial enough? Was it that he loved money too much? I think he was simply ungrateful. Study out the following passages and see for yourself if it something that Jesus might have to talk with you about in your one on one time today!

2012-02-22 - Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens. 1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21 God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind. 2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8 We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples. Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I. Decisions:

It does not depend on me; I need to sacrifice in relation to the need. As I grow close to go God I will see God's heart in this. |
