Arouse him to be a man Boaz offers her some protection and some food, but what Ruth really want was a ring Four options:
Will you fight for her? Stop being a nice guy and act like a warrior Pray for her like you never prayer for her before, OUT LOUD Step between her and the forces of darkness Not just once (some will do it 1,2, or 3 times) Man can only be justified by the measure of his sacrifice |

2010-01-15 - Kingdom First - Above and Beyond (part 1) Jesus called us to go above and beyond the law - Matthew 5:38-42 1. Addressed our desire to retaliate for injury done to us - rid our selves of it Exodus 21:24 - eye for eye; tooth for tooth - written to control excess violence and desire for revenge Excess was what the law was striving to stop For the punishment to fit the crime and nothing over To beyond this and not return anything - requires the power and conviction to restrain oneself 2. Addressed insisting upon our legal rights Jewish law was you could could never sue someone's outer garment but OK to sue to the inner one Jesus called us to a higher standard - should not be concerned with legal right but with justice, righteousness, and truth - John 18:19-24 |

2010-05-28 - Desire's Journey - Hopeless without Desire Peter tell us to be ready to give the reason for the hope that everyone one is asking us about - 1 Peter 3:15 When was the last time someone stopped you to ask about your hope? Is there nothing about our lives that is worth asking about? Our hopes are deeply tied to our real desires Killing desire has meant a hopeless life for too many People aren't exactly ripping the roofs of churches to get inside The enemies ploy:
Danger is not desire but disowning desire |
2010-05-29 - Desire's Journey - Mocking Desire We want the adventure without the risk - ex. Only 5% of SUV ever go off-road Idols usually come in pairs: Nearby idol - gives a since of control Faraway idols - provides the taste of transcendence But the idols are impostors - we are taken by the array of choices we have but never have to stop and look at what we are doing Is your desire truly and deeply satisfied with these idols? Does the relief come more through the temporary absence of desire? We have found a powerful drug - distraction Sometimes we don't want to take a good, hard look at what we are really doing Used wood to make fire and cook with - then made an idol??? - Isaiah 44:16-17, 19-20 |

2010-07-16 - Desire's Journey - Deeper Desire (part 3) The first step in the journey of desire is to stop pretending that we would be happy with less Recovering our heart involves facing our deepest disappointments We do not need to fear what we find because our heart is our biggest ally The father of lies takes many people out of the journey for life by keeping them in shallow desire He threatens us from going to the deep waters of desire by telling us that are core desires are evil Makes us thing that every thought and desire is our own I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; remove your heart of stone - Ezekiel 36:26 Our core desires are good: I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts - Jeremiah 31:33 We still struggle with sin with our tendency to kill desire or give our hearts over to false desires |
2010-08-02 - Desire's Journey - Keeping Heart (part 3) Not all the truths help us descend with the mind into the heart We have dissected God, man, and gospel thousands of times - all facts It is not that these insights aren't true, but knowing facts will not help feel closer to God How do you get to know a person? Through stories We should stop approaching the Bible looking just for tips and techniques We are bombarded by thousands of messages each day, every on of them urgent Must reduce the constant noise - turn off the TV Even the news is a problem because of its artificial importance Every night there is an urgent story (to sell more news) but nothing is |
2010-09-04 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 1) He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds - Psalms 147:3 Part of you is pulled one direction, part of you the other Don't you sometimes feel a house divided? Take your phobias: Why are you afraid of heights, intimacy, or public speaking? All the discipline in the world will not get you to do these things - Romans 7-8 Part of me knows to pray is essential but other part wants to watch TV We are not wholehearted "Well, part of me does and part of me does not" Anytime we find ourselves doing something we wish we could stop but can not/ "unable" - ought to raise concerns Hebrew for brokenhearted is "leb shabar"

2010-10-18 - Sacrificial Living
QUESTIONS
|
2010-10-26 - Contagious Christian - Strength of Sacrifice (part I) Sacrifices move people and are rarely forgotten Three major ways of sacrifice Time It is a rare commodity that we never have enough of Jesus was busy but stopped for the important things Zacchaeus tried to the get Jesus' attention Jesus stopped the procession to go talked with Zacchaeus With disbelief that Jesus would do such a thing, he experienced a rebirth because his repentant heart and Jesus making time His attention on him altered Zacchaeus' life forever People out there are seeking someone who is willing to take the time and effort required to help them come to an understanding of the truth Most of us grossly underestimate the effect we could have on people's eternities if we would just take the time The sacrifice of time combined with the clear communication of the truth can result in salvation |
2010-11-29 - Trusting God - Samuel Preached by Rob Milner Read 1 Samuel 13 Following God's instruction is the key to our success 1 Samuel 10:8 - Go to Gilgal and wait for 7 days and then we will sacrifice Samuel was the judge before their were kings Saul waited for 7 days but did not wait to do the burnt offerings He did not follow God's instructions exactly How long before we stop waiting? Ever wanted to take matters into our own hands? There is nothing as good as trusting and then God fulfilling his promise There are two battles:
James 4:7-8 - God calls us to submit to him fully Trust in God and not your situation
Protect your blacksmiths or you will be found defenseless 1 Samuel 13:19-21 What are the blacksmiths of our lives?

2010-12-07 - Mission - Cannot Help Proclaiming (part I) We can help speaking about what we have seen and heard - Acts 4:20 Have you ever been so committed to something that you were unable to stop? What would it take to stop you from sharing your faith? What does it take to motivate you to share your faith? Does it take accountability it invite people? What compelled Peter and John? 1. We are overflowing with Jesus The authorities took note that the disciples had been with Jesus - Acts 4:13 His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in - Jeremiah 20:9 Do we feel that we will burst if we don't open our moths 2. We need to be filled with gratitude We so easily forget what God's grace has done for us David says over and over again to tell and celebrate God's glory Are we overflowing with gratitude for the wonders of God? |
2010-12-08 - Mission - Cannot Help Proclaiming (part II) What else compelled Peter and John? 3. Having a spiritual perspective of the plan of God God orchestrated situations so people will find him - Acts 17:26-27 Satan can lull us to sleep with his lies If I miss this opportunity, maybe God will use someone else, they don't look interested They apostles felt the burden of salvation They were convicted that they were the only hope of salvation If they stopped, hope was gone We must have a heartfelt conviction that we are God's vehicles to reach a lost and desperate world 4. Must understand that Satan's victory/defeat is determined by our faithfulness to proclaim the word of God boldly We have two God-given weapons:
He wins every time we do not open our mouth - we must not be silent |
2010-12-09 - Mission - Cannot Fail The harvest is plentiful; ask the Lord of the harvest - Luke 10:2 Those who have taken up the work must devote themselves to prayer What they get from him is something they can not find in themselves Prayer is not the only important thing needed, it is just the most important thing to the harvest Obstacles are many for those working in the harvest There is not one that cannot be overcome with prayer Efforts to bring the harvest often stop because the workers run into problems or frustration Problem begin to look larger than the mission They lose their fire and joy Jesus says there is a problem (workers are few) but there is not despair The problem is an opportunity for perseverance and faith Frustrations and challenges differ but two things remain the same

2011-07-14 - Mind of Christ - Heavenly Mission (part IX) We must employ at least five elements to accomplish this mission (continued): 3. We must keep our minds fixed on this objective:

2011-07-29 - Fearing God - Infinitely Greater Than Nations Isaiah 40:15 surely same as behold Isaiah is saying "Think of this!" and stop and consider and ponder A bucket of water is something a drop is nothing Imagine going to the grocery store to pick up some fruit Once you go through the checkout line and saying "Please wipe the dust off, I don't want to pay for the dust" The concern seems absurd - that is how God sees the nations This is not to say nations are not imposing on a human level - just shows how infinitely greater God is Isaiah 40:16 - all the cedars in Lebanon would not enough for burnt offering Shifts of 10,000 men at a time were involved in cutting trees and floating to Israel's cost This still was not enough to be worthy of the dignity and greatness of God Isaiah 40:17 - Nation as seen before God:

2011-08-13 - Daughter Needs - Laughter If dads are always working, disciplining, serious, they will have a hard time believing love is sometimes light hearted Older daughters may think silliness is not cool, the key is to have fun Games and siliiness are simply mechanisms to achieve fun and laughter Teach your daughters to take their work and calling seriously - but not themselves Being fun and silly requires a degree of vulnerability that many men and women struggle with Tell jokes but do not poke fun of each other - this is forbidden If you make your daughter cry, you have gone over the line Apologize - don't tell her to stop being too sensitive |
2011-08-31 - Fearing God - Growing in Fear There is no point to a spiritual retreat if it does not affect our lives back home We need to be consistly in awe, reverence, honor, and worship on a high level How do we grow in fearing God? Jeremiah 32:38-41

2011-09-04 - Fearing God - Going Deep (part II) Our attitude is the most important thing when it comes to Bible study We need a Teachable spirit Avoid becoming like the Jew who Jesus said to stop thinking you gain eternal life from just reading the scriptures - John 5:39-40 We need a Spirit of dependence Proverbs 2 - We should call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding God has hidden things from the "wise" and revealed them to children Childlike simplicity and humility go hand-in-hand with teachable spirit Self-opinionated are neither dependent nor teachable We need to be diligent Proverbs 2 describes this attitude:
Digging is labor intensive |
2011-09-27 - Proverbs on Advice - Advisors bring victory 2. 3. Without instruction, bad things happen Proverbs 19:27 - Stop listening to instruction my son and you will stray from the words of knowledge Proverbs 21:16 - A man who strays from the path of understanding comes to rest in the company of the dead Sometimes were just think-headed (we know what’s best)

2011-10-03 - Genesis 3 - The Fall of Man SummaryThe serpent deceived the woman; she and Adam ate from the tree. Man blamed woman, woman blamed the serpent. The earth became cursed, and God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden. ObservationsGenesis 3:1 - Did God really say Personal ApplicationI need to be aware of Satan's tricks continuously. He does not want to be noticed. I need to pray and reflect on how I am living my life and find where Satan is getting me to deviate even a fraction of a degree. I need also examine my thought and find out they are out of line with God's Word. I will ask others what they see where I have taken a devour on God's narrow road. |
2011-10-05 - Genesis 5 - Genealogies (part I)SummaryAdam's line was: Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah. Noah's sons were Shem, Ham and Japheth. ObservationsGenesis 5:2 - He created them male and female and blessed them Personal ApplicationThe challenge for me is simple: To finish the race [Acts 20:24] with great faith and perseverance. But not just to get by but to have a relationship with God that shines before others. When people talk about me, do they stop and mention my relationship with God like the Bible does with Enoch? What does God say about my faith? |
2011-10-12 - Genesis 12 - The Call of AbrahamSummaryGod told Abram, "Go. I will make you a great nation. You will be a blessing." In Egypt Abram lied about Sarai and Pharaoh was cursed. ObservationsGenesis 12:1 - Leave your country, your people Personal ApplicationI value comfort but it is not the same comfort that comes from God. When I look at my heart, I am slower to change then I used to be as a younger Christian. This should not be. What is stopping me from changing? Would I being willing to move again for God? |
2011-10-18 - Genesis 18 - Abraham prays for SodomSummaryThree visitors came and said that Sarah would have a son next year. Sodom was very evil; Abraham pleaded with the LORD for the city. ObservationsGenesis 18:14 - Is anything too hard for the LORD? Personal ApplicationI doubt God way too much (once is too much )and I do probably everyday - I am doing it right now. God is god, he can do anything. Yes, even that. I have got to stop making God smaller in my mind. Every time that I think I have an understanding how big and strong he is - God is beyond that. He greater than I can imagine. |

2012-01-23 - Ministry - Unless You Change Matthew 18:2-4 Deeply rooted in the mature of adults is a strong sense of resistance to change. Even when we feel deeply discontent with our lives, we are more willing to stay in the familiarity of our misery than to venture into the untested waters of change. Fortunately, Jesus, in his desire to put us out of our misery, makes it clear that for a Christian to make it to heaven we must keep on changing. We must choose to grow even if it is challenging, difficult, tiring, confusing or scary. Why this strong direction? Because there is just so much about our hearts, character, habits, lives that the Lord wants to change! Too many souls will be lost if we stop growing. Jesus gives us the secret to change in the same verse - humble yourself. Thank God we live in a kingdom where the Lord rushes to help the humble. He will send the word, wise advice from a disciple, a protecting angel, and a physical blessing, all to the humble. It seems that we have two choices: Be humbled or get humbled. Questions:

2012-01-25 - Ministry - Jesus' Rescue Mission Matthew 18:10-14 (Luke 15:3-10) It is comforting to know we serve a God who is not only all-powerful and all-knowing, but also all-loving. Sometimes the spiritual battle gets so intense that we wonder if God really cares. This passage proves how deeply God cares about each individual "sheep". How we do spiritually does matter to God. He does not want any of his disciples to wander off and fall away. Jesus is the perfect shepherd who will do whatever it takes to go after the one lost sheep. Each soul matters to God. Jesus' heart is to keep on searching, keep on hoping, and keep on loving until the sheep is found and returns home. We need to take on Jesus' heart and persevere in rescuing those who have given up on their relationship with God. Satan wants us to get hurt, get bitter and angry instead of being compassionate and determined to help those who have lost faith. Let's be inspired by Jesus' unfailing love and decide to be part of Jesus' rescue team! Questions:

2012-01-31 - Ministry - The Burden of Jesus Matthew 11:25 Jesus calls the weary and burdened to Himself and promises rest for them. The rest that He refers to is not to stop working and be idle. He is calling us to give Him the burdens of our souls. He calls us to take his yoke upon us. What is this yoke? The yoke of caring about others. The yoke of humility. It takes far less energy to be humble that it does to be prideful. It is much easier to be gentle than it is to be terse or gruff. Jesus beckons us to learn from Him. Really the yoke of Christ would finally lead him to the cross. That does not seem easy or light. In fact, our purpose to evangelize the world in this generation is neither easy nor light. The attitude that we are called to have is one of humility and gentleness. Questions/Followup:

2012-02-05 - Ministry - Touching Faith Mark 5:24b-34 This woman had been subject to a chronic disorder for 12 years of her life. Imagine for a minute the discouragement, doubt, devastation, and frustration of not being able to see this condition get better. In fact, it just got worse. Have you ever felt defeated about something in your life? Have you ever been discouraged for months about your marriage? Personal fruitfulness? Relationships? Then you can relate to this woman. One of the Satan's deadliest tactics is to keep people from being open about their lives. Sadly, many of us fall into this trap Satan has laid for us and we begin to live "double lives" in the Kingdom. We live a certain way in the world and a certain way at church. For a brief moment in her misery, she decided to have faith and touch him Jesus felt power leave him so he asked "Who touched me?" People stop, some get nervous, some put their heads down, some look at others. Everything is silent. The woman's conscience perhaps was pricked and she had a decision to make. She knew what she did and she knew what the right thing to do was. So she fell to her feet, trembling with fear, she told him the whole truth. But what she thought Jesus would do, he didn't do because he is not like you or me. She learned Jesus wanted to her to be open and tell the truth not because he wanted to scold her, admonish her, or even take the miracle back. He actually wanted to honor her. Question: What doubt or discouragement in your life is holding you back from being 100% sold out to God? Talk to your discipleship partner today about it. Getting "in touch" with it is the first step to change. |
2012-02-07 - Ministry - The Serving Heart of Jesus John 13: 1 - 17 At a time when Jesus could have most concerned about himself and what lay ahead he chose to serve the disciples instead. Jesus was known for his acts of service before God and men. Rather than just telling people what they should do for him and each other Jesus set the example. After he served them he asked them if they understood what he had done for them. Do we really understand the importance of serving? True servitude comes from a childlike heart. Matthew 18: 1 - 9 Children are humble-hearted and love to serve. We need to consider others and look for ways to meet their needs both physically and spiritually. Sin is what stops us from serving. When we are in sin we are serving ourselves: our pleasures and desires. Jesus had a radical attitude toward sin because it keeps us from the spiritual act of serving and into the acts of the sinful nature. When we are serving it is difficult to be selfish, inward focused, prideful, self-righteous, sad and depressed. Jesus experienced great joy by meeting other people's needs. Jesus understood that serving is the true path to greatness. If we desire to be like Jesus we must develop deep convictions in the area of servitude. How did Jesus Serve?

2012-02-13 - Ministry - Are You Willing to Keep Praying? Luke 18:1-8 Jesus tells this parable to show us something. The scriptures even go so far as to tell us exactly what that something is that we should always pray and not give up. Have you ever decided to pray about a specific situation and not stopped until it has changed? What if it took a year to change? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? Jesus says to never give up! Too often we get discouraged and want to quit-even on God-because something doesn't change. Maybe we haven't been fruitful for a while or we don't have a dating relationship yet. Maybe things have not changed in our marriage fast enough or our job situation is still not working out. Maybe we are just not changing our hearts the way we should. The answer is not to give up but to keep on praying. Jesus ends the parable questioning whether there would still be faith on earth when he returns. Our lack of prayer is a sign of a lack of faith! To keep praying and not give up is a sign of great faith. Write down three things you have quit praying about and recommit yourself to be faithful in prayer. Decide to trust. God and be in the kingdom for the long haul-no matter how many decades of prayer it takes!! |
2012-02-18 - Fear of Failure - Letting Problems and Failures Build Your Faith by Tracey Jones, San Francisco Church of Christ Romans 4:18-22; Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 5:1-6 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us--they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us. Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) I think as a non-Christian, I was the most anxious, controlling person in the world. I remember I would have almost every minute of my life planned out from beginning to end. Although it helped me to be disciplined and to achieve goals, it stopped me from letting people into my heart. I was always the strong one to my friends and family…"the rock". They saw all the successful things on the outside, but they didn't see the desperate, feeble person I was inside. When I began to work with people, it was very difficult for me, because I had no control whatsoever over them. That lack of control began to crush me. Now I see that God is using my problems and failures to encourage me to grow. He is telling me the little that I know is not enough - I need to keep growing and changing and developing into the person He wants me to be. One decision I have made when I have problems in my ministry, marriage, or family is to pray about them and to commit them fully to God. Now, instead of giving in to thoughts like “I can't change that woman's heart, I pray specifically about what I need help with and have confident expectation of what God will do. This has brought much more joy to my marriage, ministry, and life. What is stealing your joy? Could it be that you are letting problems and situations dictate your life? Decide today to commit those things to prayer and ask God to give you increasing character to deal with your life. |
