2010-01-25 - Kingdom First - Only One Master What occupies my mind? If we are eager and driven to gain more we will stray from the faith and be pierced with many griefs - 1 Timothy 6:10 Secret to being content, I can do everything through him that gives me strength - Philippians 4:12-13 Judas: example of someone trying to live with 2 masters:
Elders gave large sums of money to have them lie about the disciples stealing the body of Jesus - Matthew 28:12 What is our selling point? Do not put our hope in wealth, which is so uncertain - 1 Timothy 6:17 Keep your lives free from the love of money - Hebrews 13:5 |
2010-01-28 - Kingdom First - Personal Responsibility (part 2) When talking about removing the plank from our eye so we can remove the speck from someone else, there are two extremes:
A. Look daily into the mirror of God's word Foolish to just look at the word of God and not let it transform you - James 1:22-25 B. Pray fervently for God to open your eyes and give you insight into your heart and life An incredible prayer about searching our heart - Psalms 139:23-24 C. Be open with those in your life Be quick to confess sin - James 5:16 D. Have a humble attitude toward challenge in your life Let this be our goal - Psalms 141:5 |
2010-02-13 - First the Kingdom - Deceision Time There are fundamentally three responses one can have to Jesus' message: 1. No way! Tho could possibly do this? Too hard, No one can do it Just trying to make me feel guilty 2. It's wonderful. We should think more about it. Many want to hear it - but few live it Same problem in Ezekiel's day - Ezekiel 33:31-32 3. It's a great challenge, but it's God's will and I want it No one can live it without error, but all those who put their hearts into it and go for it will start changing their part of the world |
2010-04-12 - Life to the Full - Macho Mist (part 2) Spiritual adultery - How easy it is to flirt with the world if we fail to guard our hearts - Proverbs 4:23 In Jewish law, adultery is grounds for divorce The Spirit cause to live within us envies intensely - James 3:5 The nature of God: He will tolerate no rivals for his love God is a jealous God - Exodus 34:14 One of the quoted OT verse in the the NT is about pride - Proverbs 3:34 Much of the pride mention in the NT is bad: Pride goes before the fall - Proverbs 16:18 Pride mentioned in the NT is usually good: I take great pride in you - 2 Corinthians 7:4 It depends on where the pride is rooted and the attitude behind it If you feel ineffective, frustrated, unproductive, opposed - it might be because God is opposing you because of your pride He is trying to get your attention so you will turn back to him |
2010-06-10 - Jesus - the Zealot (part 1) By Richard Dixon in 1999-09-26
Jesus mission was to overthrow Satan's ruling government over the earth1 John 3:7-8 Cause worth living forLuke 9:25

2010-06-30 - Desire's Journey - Great Restoration (part 1) Spring reminds us that life can return to the dead Our ideas of heaven are sometimes not very desirable We sigh and feel guilty that is we are not more "spritual" Scripture tells us that God has set eternity in our hearts - Ecclesiastes 3:11 |
2010-07-07 - Desire's Journey - The Grand Affair (part 4) Sexual intimacy is the closest parallel we have to real worship The best impostors succeed because they are nearly indistinguishable from what they are trying to imitate Our hearts live for "an experience of worship that fills our being with a joy that is so deeply in awe that we are barely aware of ourselves Men have a hard time relating to the bridal imagery used in Scripture |
2010-07-25 - Desire's Journey - Letting Go (part 2) Paul learned the secret of being content - Philippians 4:12 Many Christians assume he no longer experienced the thirst of his soul Earlier Paul said he had not obtained his soul's desire nor already made perfect (complete) He was straining toward what was ahead - Philippians 3:12-14 Contentment is not freedom from desire but freedom of desire It is no longer being ruled by your desires We have 3 options:
Most of the church has chosen deadness Christians are called to live the life of holy longing but we don't like to stay there To live in thirst is to live with an ache Every addiction comes from the attempt to get rid of the ache Merely trying sets us on an unending chase that leads us farther and farther from home |
2010-08-09 - Waking Dead - The Heart's Eyes Do not lose heart, fix our eyes on what is unseen - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 We are losing heart, all of us, daily Someone was trying to shutdown Paul during his ministry - 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 Life is an illustion - there is a way of looking at life and be able to live from the heart no matter what Jesus spoke in parables to our hearts:
Jesus spoke in a way that will get past all intellectual defenses When you tell a story, you speak to the heart |
2010-08-11 - Waking Dead - Myths (part 2) Myth tell us three truths, the second is: 2. There is a great struggle or quest or battle that is well under way Christianity isn't about:
As good as those things might be, this is a world at war Reason we love these is because it is telling us that this is our most desperate hour
Without this buring in our hearts, we lose the meaning of our days Notice that those who have tried to wake up to this reality were ususally killed
Has it occured to you that someone is trying to shut them up?
|
2010-09-05 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 2) Everything Jesus did was to illustrate what he was trying to say He offered healing for the body but more importantly for the soul The Lord is my shepherd, he restores my soul - Psalms 23:1-3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds - Psalms 147:3 Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed - Jeremiah 17:14 Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings - Malachi 4:2 He welcomes them and healed those who needed healing - Luke 9:11 |
2010-09-08 - Waking Dead - Deep Restoration (part 5) Our sin give the enemy a certain claim to our lives - Romans 6:16 As we renounce any sin, we also renounce any claim we've given to Satan in our lives This often comes in the form of "agreements" - Satan has suggested something to us and we have said yes.
As long as we have unhealed places in our hearts, it is next to impossible to live in freedom and victory No matter how much discipline we apply to it Our enemy knows them well and trying undermine us and uses it against us with a disabling effect |
2010-09-10 - Waking Dead - Spiritual Warfare (part 2) The question is not are we oppressed but where and how we are Why does every story have an enemy?
Satan lost the battle against Michael and his angels - was hurled to earth - Revelation 12:9 Satan's mood? He is filled with fury because he knows his time is short - Revelation 12:12 He is trying to steal your freedom, kill your heart, destroy your life We can go throughout our day and not even once wonder how the enemy might be attacking us All we know is that we aren't enjoying that abundant life Christ talked about Ignorance of spiritual warfare is the most native and dangerous thing a person can do You don't escape spiritual warfare by choosing not to believe it exists or refuse to fight The thief is trying to steal the life God wants to give - John 10:10 |
2010-09-12 - Waking Dead - Spiritual Warfare (part 4) Heads up. Satan can give us actions and words to say:
Some trying to "work through" things are simply have agreements with the Enemy Satan uses your wounds and unresolved emotional issues to pin your heart down under a spiritual stronghold We must be careful not to make agreements with Satan to increase his dominion |
2010-09-24 - Waking Dead - It Will Be Messy Going to a church service with hundreds of people will never expose you That is what most prefer - because community will It will bring you close and you will be seen and you will be known Therein lies the power and the danger The enemy hates this: he knows it can be powerful and God and his kingdom Remember divide and conquer? This is his way Most have settled for safety in numbers - a comfortable, anonymous distance An army that keeps meeting for briefings, but never breaks into platoons and goes to war Community is like camping together Stuff is scattered out there for everyone to see During fellowship there are two important things to remember 1. Know the heart is good - so much easier to trust and to forgive We are for one another 2. Know that we are at war The enemy is always trying to pull everyone away |
2010-10-09 - Contagious Christian - Attractiveness of Authenticity (part 3) Living by Genuine Conviction There is something about someone who stands up for what they believe in People take notice
Seekers are not impressed with spinelessness Seekers are trying to make up their own minds about what to do with the claims of Christ When a believer speaks up, they are forces to deal with the implication for their lives A Roman centurion watched as Jesus
The soldier's heart was eventually moved and said - "Surely this man was the Son of God!" Nothing short of Jesus' laying down his life would have brought this cynical soldier to his knees |

2011-06-06 - Fearing God - John feared Man is never sufficiently affected by the awareness of his lowly state until he has compared himself with God's majesty When John was in the presence of God, he fell at his feet as though dead - Revelation 1:17 Not the first time this happened to John - Matthew 17:6 We can encounter Him in His Word as the Holy Spirit opens it to our minds and hearts

2011-09-12 - Followup: Purity (part I) Our society exalts sexual immorality, and it’s raging out of control. Teenagers have hormones that are newly active and they can let them rage out of control. Singles are looking for love in all the wrong places. Marriages are ending in divorce more now than ever before even though more people claim to be Christians. God has made it clear that he wants us all to let the natural sexual desires remain dormant until they can be expressed within the marriage relationship. In the Bible the term “purity” is most often referring to sexual purity, but it also is used to refer to being free from contamination by worldliness in general. Contaminated water is undrinkable, just as a contaminated heart is unacceptable to God. Question: Have you ever had food poisoning? What happens?

2011-10-04 - Genesis 4 - Cain Murders AbelSummaryEve's sons made offerings to God. Only Abel's was acceptable, so Cain killed him. Abel's blood cried out and God sent Cain away. ObservationsGenesis 4:7 - if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door Personal ApplicationI wonder sometimes if I have my "ringer" loud enough for me to hear when God calls. A lot of times I look back on important events in my life and realize that I missed another lesson God was trying to teach me but I was not listening. I feel embarrassed that I was so selfish during that times. I want to listen voice from God more intensely. |
2011-10-16 - Genesis 16 - Ishmael is BornSummarySarai told Abram to have children with Hagar. Hagar conceived, then ran away, but an angel sent her back. Hagar's son was Ishmael. ObservationsGenesis 16:5 - You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering Personal ApplicationI know I have experience times where I think I am doing what God wants but it really comes from my impatience or my selfish desires to see things happens the way I want them and when I want them. I need to just be patient and ask "is this the Lord will?". |

2012-01-18 - Ministry - The Heart of Humility Matt. 18:4, Luke 14:10, James 4:10, Phil. 2:5,7-8 Have you ever made a goal in your life to become a humble person? Have you ever prayed consistently over a period of time for God to give you a humble heart? Jesus shocked the crowds following him that day when he declared for all men to change and become like little children or they would not enter the kingdom of heaven! Then he lifts up the quality of humility in a child's heart and commands his disciples to have this heart! The world teaches us that humility is soft, weak, passive, no convictions. Jesus was certainly not this! He was a man of convictions, fearless with the opposition, and pressed on resolutely about his goals! However, he washed the disciples feet, touched the leper, served the crowds, and obeyed the Father in everything. One of the real tests comes in serving. Jesus made himself nothing, became a servant, and humbled himself on the cross for us! Do people know me to be a serving person? How do I feel when I am serving-awesome? Do I serve only when I want to serve and what I want to do if it serves my interests?Jesus came to serve and not to be served! He came to give his life as a ransom for many! Whoever wants to be great among you must be your slave! Matt. 20:26-28 Questions:

2012-01-30 - Ministry - Christianity or Christ? John 6:25-40 Jesus explains to the hungry crowds that their minds should be set on spiritual fulfillment, not on physical fulfillment. The bread that they are looking for is not a loaf of bread or even the manna that Moses' generation ate. The bread they needed was the bread from heaven: the Son of God. Having a relationship with Jesus is what will satisfy. Believing in him is what will change our lives. It is not Christianity but Christ. We chase spiritual fads, deep, theological issues, when all the Jesus wants is for us to be deeply dependent on him. This requires a radical change in how we have learned to exist. Some of us get burned out being Christians because having faith in God is not our focus. We spend a lot of time trying to do things and not time having a real relationship with "Christ who is our life." Questions/Followup:

2012-02-20 - Fear of Failure - Relying on God Never Fails by Jeremy Clark, San Francisco Church of Christ Jeremiah 17:5-10; Hosea 10:12-13 Often the failures in my life have felt devastating. They have made me doubt myself, made me doubt my purpose and made me doubt God. When I began to lead a ministry, I thought I could do it by myself. I was out to prove to myself that I was capable. As I began to lead I ran around all the time, I was exhausted, anxious, and worried about getting in trouble every day. I was miserable. What I didn't realize was that as I was trying to prove that I could do it, God was proving to me that I couldn't without him. My failure made me want to quit. I felt cursed; it seemed all the the work I did meant nothing. God was showing me my pride, but instead of praying more, I worried more and ran around more and was completely ineffective. My failure came because of my pride, my unwillingness to be open, and not getting the help I needed. I was relying on myself, and God was teaching me that he would not bless it. That lesson was hard to learn, but one so valuable to my life once I was willing to learn to rely on God and not my own strength.

2012-02-22 - Fear of Failure - God is Able, Part 2 by Del & Daurence Johnson - Region Leaders: San Francisco Church of Christ Part of dealing with failure and sin is realizing that God is able. He can give us strength, and forgiveness to help us deal with our burdens. 1) God is able to do immeasurably more - Ephesians 3:14-21 God is able to do more than what my puny faith believes. So I have to ask for so much more and imagine even greater than I ever have. Make a list of your dreams that you desire. Pray through them. Test Him. See if the outcome doesn't blow your mind. 2) God is able to make all grace abound - 2 Corinthians 9:8 We need forgiveness to make up for how we purposely sabotage God's will for our life. Grace makes up for all our weaknesses and inadequacies. There are things God has done for us that we will never get the chance to thank Him for, because we don't even know what they are. For example, the times that we have hurt people, but they never said anything. Or times we could have hurt ourselves, but He guided us down a different road. God is the unknown soldier for every moment of our life. Our failures have become learning experiences that result in our maturity and people becoming stronger disciples. Don't short cut God's discipline and will for your life because you are consumed with you and not Him. Learn to pray. Learn to read your Bible. Learn to be open and build spiritual friendships that keep you believing and repenting. He is not finished with you yet, nor I. Decisions:

2012-02-25 - Fear of Failure - Failure Isn't Fatal, but Faith-Building by Ray Kim - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ John 11 So often when something tragic occurs in my life, when circumstances unexpectedly take a turn for the worse, or when I miss a lucrative opportunity, I view these "failures" as being personally fatal. However, God uses "failures" in my life as opportunities for learning, spiritual growth, building faith, strengthening character, and ultimately for the saving of souls. This was the case in John 11 for the disciples, Mary, Martha, Lazarus and others as Jesus turned what appeared to be a fatal situation into a life-changing opportunity to build their faith in God's life-saving power. Decisions for dealing with failure:

2012-03-02 - Fear of Failure - I get knocked down, but I get up again by Angel Calica - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 2 Corinthians 4:9 The scriptures say we will get knocked down. The question is are you going to stay down, or get up again and keep going? Failure tests what kind of character we have. Do you give up easily and stay down (quitter)? Or are you a fighter and get up again? What are the sins that can keep us down?
Hebrews 4:6

2013-03-06 - Prayer of the Righeous - More Powerful Than We Can Imagine (part II) Two different responses to God's power: 1. Moses doubted God's power to feed the 600,000 men 2. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego faced the furnace John the Baptist described God's power and man's insignifiance - Matthew 3:3
Imagine trying to asking a clerk compensate for dust when weighing an item for purchase - it would be absurd How do you current view God? |
2013-09-11 - Men Leave Childhood Behind We need to choose to let go of childishness and foolishness Clinging to childhood while growing into manhood is like trying to run in opposite directions at the same time aka the “Peter Pan Syndrome” Teen years are often wasted and fathers have become silent. Rather than initiating serious conversations with wiser men, they goof off with fools in sports bars Too many men want the freedoms, rewards, and privileges of manhood but only the responsibilities of boyhood Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ - Ephesians 4:14-15 Do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature - 1 Corinthians 14:20 The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands - Isaiah 32:8 |
2014-02-24 - Heart Hindrances (part II) Continuing the “heart hindrances” that will push your chidren away.
You must keep your radar up to sense if you have your children’s hearts Questions to continously ask:
Too many men foolishly refuse to apologize because they’re trying to save face and don’t want to look bad.

2014-05-15 - Genesis 23 - The Death of SarahSummarySarah died in Kiriath-arba and Abraham asked the Hittites for a burial site. He bought a cave at full price from Ephron and buried Sarah there. ObservationsGenesis 23:6 - Listen, my lord, you are an honored prince ApplicationWhat kind of reputation do I have at work, at home, and at church? What do others say about me? How has that helped or hindered me? Do I become impatient in waiting for God's promises? Do I try to fulfill God's promises for him? Do we avoid giving when it really costs us something? PrayerLord, help me to have the faith to wait on your promises and to always be ambassador of yours no matter where I am. |
2015-04-26 - Delegation Why are you trying to do all this alone? - Exodus 18:14 A wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Nobody lives long enough to make them all himself. Moses filled hs plate to overflowing - working from dawn to dusk This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself - Exodus 18:17-18 Jethro's advice: Slow down and let someone who feared and loved God do a part of the work As a priest of Midian and successful businessman, Jethro had a lot of wisdom to share Your mistakes can be put to good use by encouraging others to not repeat them |
2015-05-22 - Infectious Enthusiasm Phinehas has turned my anger away from the Isrealites by being as zealous among them as I was - Numbers 25:10 Phinehas had seen the immorality going on around him and could not stand idly by and allow his people tp defile themselves Neither could he allow God judgement to continue without trying to bring it to an end His last straw momenet was when he witnessed his Hebrew brother shamelessly taking a Midianite into his tent Phinehas' zeal kicked in and passionately executed the man From then on, he showed his willingness to take a stand and the people of Israel were spared and decendants received God's blessings - Numbers 25:12-13 When you are enthusiastic about your relationship with God, you are bound to affect the people around you |
2015-06-12 - It's about love Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath or is it a day for doing evil? - Mark 3:4 Nothing gets the attention of a religous old guard faster than trying something new and different Example: Jesus on earth with the Jewish leaders with so many rules and regulations No one could keep all the rules and certainly not while joyfully serving God Jesus' wisdom steered people back toward the spirit of the law - root in the love for God and neighbor He healed a man in need and the leaders called it working therefore wrong Are you legalist or do you enjoy the freedom Jesus came to give you? |
2015-07-01 - Passionate Intercession Surely you wouldn't do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked - Genesis 18:25 Abraham's heart sank when God announced he would destroy Sodom:
He couldn't just stand there without trying to intercede on their behalf Abramham trusted God's assessment of Sodom and he to be just and righteous God said he would not destory the city if there were 50, 30, 20, 10 righteous left - Genesis 18:32 Are you a man of persistent, passionate prayer? |
2015-07-03 - Righteous Anger Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple - John 2:15 Jesus became angry times when he saw authorities have a lack of love and true faith in his heavenly father He espcially got angry this time with the money changers who were greedy in their dealing with those pilgrims trying to purshase sacrificial animals Jesus always directed his anger at things that stood in the way of God's purposes for mankind Do you express your anger over the same kind of issues that angered Jesus? When you become angry, ask yourself:

2015-08-01 - Listen No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words - Job 2:13 Many men struggle with just listening - why God gave us two ears and only one mouth At first Job's friends were the exactly the kind of friends he needed After Job had spoken, they began speaking but instead of comforting him they tried to fix his problems - which made things worst Sometimes it is best to just listen instead of trying to fix things |
2015-09-30 - To Go Ahead I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race - 2 Timothy 4:7 Paul contemplated his own end, he knew:
He felt at peace with his imminent death and did not see his life as his own - 2 Timthoy 4:6 Nothing in this life can compare with what awaits you in heaven as a follower of Jesus Christ |
2015-10-06 - Trust God The king has sent me on a private matter - 1 Samuel 21:2 We can overcome our fear of what men do to us by clinging to our faith and remembering God superintends everything that comes our way David was on the run from King Saul because he was trying to kill him when he met Ahimelech David lied to Ahimelech - The king has sent me on a private matter It's not hard to figure out why David lied, he feared Saul more than he trusted God When you fear men, do you focus on the fear or trust in God who already has your future mapped out |
2015-11-24 - God's Approval May the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful - Psalms 90:1 The formula for failure is trying to please everyone Lasting blessing comes when you make pleasing God and seeking his approval your focus In Psalms 90, Moses wrote while in the wilderness, plainly about the consequences of their stubbornness and disobedience Most of those who left Egypt would never see the Promise Land but still found hope understanding the connection between willing obedience and divine blessing Life is far too short and God's blessing to wonderful to miss anything he wants to give you |
