2011-05-26 - Fearing God - Slave or Son Two types of fear:
He went out and hid his talent in the ground - Matthew 25:24-25 The devil is the author of servile fear - he uses it to haunt and disturb Christians to make our lives uncomfortable Filial fear is loving fear of a child toward his father A mixture of reference, pleasure, joy, and awe which fills our hearts when we realize who God is and what He has done for us There are 150 references to the fear of God, most in the Old Testament Ones in the New Testament convince us that fearing God is an attitude of the heart |

2011-07-14 - Mind of Christ - Heavenly Mission (part IX) We must employ at least five elements to accomplish this mission (continued): 3. We must keep our minds fixed on this objective:
As with Jesus, so with us. “Christ’s mission is the only reason for our being on earth; were it not for that, He would take us away” ~ Andrew Murray “A Like Christ” |
2011-08-01 - Mind of Christ - Servant, Washing Feet (part II) The washing of the disciples feet was illustrative of Christ’s life and ministry

2011-09-18 - Proverbs on Integrity (part I) Proverbs 19:22 - Poor person is better than a liar Proverbs 20:17 - Gains by fraud ends up being worthless The 1996 New York Times had a story on a golfer named Jeff Sluman.
When someone is a person of integrity he/she is someone that has wholeness about him either.

2011-09-26 - Proverbs on Advice - Seek Help Proverbs 15:22 - Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War.
Proverbs 11:14 - For lack of guidance a nation falls but many advisers make victory sure. In the life of a disciple we need eyes all around us (we are in a spiritual battle, not against flesh and blood but against the dark forces of this world).
Five lessons to learn about advice... 1. Seek Advice Proverbs 14:12 - There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death Proverbs 18:15 - The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, the ears of the wise seek it out If we were going to buy a car for the 1st time, most of us would seek a lot of advice.
If we need help in other areas (that’s good) surely our spiritual life is more important because it has an eternal destination (good or bad)

2011-10-07 - Genesis 7 - The Flood (part II)SummaryNoah and his family went into the ark with two of each creature. It rained for forty days and forty nights and the earth was covered. ObservationsGenesis 7:1 - I have found you righteous in this generation Personal ApplicationI need to look for what I see as gray areas in my life. When I am neither hot nor cold [Revelation 3:16], I am not aware of where I am. |
2011-10-13 - Genesis 13 - The Cowboy Conflict SummaryAbram journeyed with his nephew Lot. Their servants argued, so Lot went to Sodom, Abram to Canaan. The LORD promised Abram the land. ObservationsGenesis 13:7 - So there were quarrels Personal ApplicationI have been very quarrelsome at work recently - there is a lot that frustrates me right now. I need to relax and count my blessings. It is not worth broken relationships or loss of life. |
2011-10-14 - Genesis 14 - The Kidnapping of LotSummaryThe kings went to war and took Lot captive. Abram rescued Lot. Melchizedek blessed Abram and Abram gave him a tenth of everything. ObservationsGenesis 14:18 - Melchizedek ... He was priest of God Most High
Personal ApplicationDo I have a good sense of my relationships? Do I tend to be a part of group to just belong or a higher reason? I find it much easier to take then to give and I do not think I have conviction on doing the reverse. There is no such thing as a free lunch (maybe from God because he gives freely) - are some offers of others giving really a trap? In some some situations, I should be giving instead of taking. |
2012-02-13 - Ministry - Are You Willing to Keep Praying? Luke 18:1-8 Jesus tells this parable to show us something. The scriptures even go so far as to tell us exactly what that something is that we should always pray and not give up. Have you ever decided to pray about a specific situation and not stopped until it has changed? What if it took a year to change? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? Jesus says to never give up! Too often we get discouraged and want to quit-even on God-because something doesn't change. Maybe we haven't been fruitful for a while or we don't have a dating relationship yet. Maybe things have not changed in our marriage fast enough or our job situation is still not working out. Maybe we are just not changing our hearts the way we should. The answer is not to give up but to keep on praying. Jesus ends the parable questioning whether there would still be faith on earth when he returns. Our lack of prayer is a sign of a lack of faith! To keep praying and not give up is a sign of great faith. Write down three things you have quit praying about and recommit yourself to be faithful in prayer. Decide to trust. God and be in the kingdom for the long haul-no matter how many decades of prayer it takes!! |
2012-02-15 - Fear of Failure - That Our Faith Should Not Fail by Rosalind Lam, San Francisco Church of Christ Luke 22:31-62 Jesus recognized the spiritual battle both he and his disciples would undergo before his arrest and therefore prayed that Simon's faith would not fail him and that he would "repent and turn to [Jesus] again, strengthen and build up [his] brothers" (NLT). Peter was blinded by his pride and did not have a sober view of his own ability to resist temptation, even after Jesus warned him that he would deny him. Peter's overconfidence was evident when he chose to sleep instead of pray and Peter's reliance on his flesh led to him being overpowered by fear and failing to have conviction during the time of pressure. Though Peter got bitter at his failure initially, he did not let it destroy his faith but went on to do amazing things for God, including preaching the opening sermon for the church. What I learn from this passage about my own failures as a Christian is that Satan's ultimate goal is that my faith will fail me. Jesus' prayer helped me to make a decision that as long as I fight hard in prayer to repent and turn back to God, use my failures to build the faith of other Christians, and never give up, I can always make a comeback as Peter did and see God use me to fulfill his dreams for my life. 2013-09-07 - Man of Resposibility When did you become a man? Men are often unsure. Learning this can not only help us understand ourselves better but also help our sons become secure men as well. When Jesus was twelve years old and His parents accidentally left Him After this event, the Scriptures say that He “kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” - Luke 2:52 In the Jewish community today, when a boy reaches puberty (around the age of thirteen)
He may have become a responsible adult earlier than twenty, but by then he had no excuse. God calls us to an appropriate and excellent standard: His. To be a man is to fully own your roles as an adult, husband, father, employee, neighbor, and any other role you choose to undertake. |
2013-10-21 - Resolve to Lead Your Family The greater responsibility to raise your children is yours. When the dad leads, kids are up to twenty times more likely to stay in church long-term than when moms are the spiritual leaders at home

2014-05-30 - Genesis 24 - Search for the Bride of Isaac (part I)SummaryAbraham's servant went to Nahor to find a wife for Isaac. ObservationsGenesis 24:1 - The Lord blessed him every way Genesis 24:8 - But under no circumstances are you to take my son there ApplicationI am convicted by the way Abraham chose to approach challenging situations. He did not chose the easy way or the first way that sounded right. He chose to be faithful and had a conviction to allow God's promises to fulfilled in his life. I did not mediate and pray through the challenges set before very often. Many times I just say or do the first things that comes to my mind. Those are often thoughts of the easy way or only way to go about things. I need to think about the bigger picture when making decisions. PrayerPraying for heart of disernment and faithfulness in life's challenging situations. |
2014-12-11 - Genesis 24 - Search for the Bride of Isaac (part III)SummaryRebebekah went back with Eliezer and she married Isaac. ObservationsGenesis 24:49 - Tell me yes or no, then I know what to do next ApplicationThe God should be obvious in our lives. Do people see God in us and if so is it obvious or is there doubt in their mind? In order for me to reach out to others, my life needs to show Jesus. When I speak and invite others to church/Bible study does it come as a surpise or an invitation or extention of what I am already doing? PrayerPray to be real with people and to share my faith without reservation. |

2015-03-11 - Right Weapon Shall I not drink from the cup of suffereing the Father has given me? - John 18:10-11 When you fight spiritual battles, you have a variety of resources available Your choice will always determine if you win or lose Peter did the best he could; he went wrong by putting confidence in his own strength and abilty to get things done Peter's problem was not a lack of willingness to follow Jesus but a problem of choice of weapons Only when we receieved the holy spirit did he become a fearless and powerful preacher of the gospel What weapons do you use to fight your spiritual battles? |

2015-04-24 - Vows I will give the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me - Judges 11:30 As it would happen, the first to leave his house was Jephthah's daugther The Bible contains hundreds of God's conditional promises of blessings Jephthah's vow went terribiy wrong when he tried to set his own conidtions for blessing rather than appoarching God in faith Have you felt that you needed to offer God something to receive his promised blessing? You can't buy what God already wants to give you. |
2015-06-04 - Thank You One of them fell to the ground at Jesus' feet, thnking him for what he had done - Luke 17:14 Sometimes expressing gratitude means going out of your way to let the party know how thankful you feel Out of ten men healed with leparosy, only one thanked him Ten men asked for and received help, only one man was changed for good and received a greater gift - greatful heart Jesus asked where the other nine went - Luke 17:17 |
