The Heart

~ As water reflects the face, so a man's heart reflects the man.
- The heart is the governing center of the whole man (Emotional, intellectual & physical)
1 Samuel 16:7
~ God, when evaluating a man, looks at the heart.
- The heart is so important because it guides our thoughts and actions.
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS OF THE HEART ?:
Jeremiah 17:9
~ DECEITFULNESS
- Since our hearts lie to us we need other people in our lives to keep us objective.
Mark 7:20-23
~ SINFULNESS
- The heart is the source of evil desires and sin.
Hebrews 3:12-13
~ HARDENING
- The heart can harden, lose spiritual sensitivity, become unbelieving and turn away from the living God.
Romans 2:5-8
~ UNREPENTANT
- Our hearts can become very stubborn and unwilling to change. Instead of experiencing Godly sorrow for sin we can become self seeking and self indulgent.
WHAT, THEN, IS THE REMEDY ?:
Jeremiah 29:13
~ SEEK God with ALL your heart.
- As we get closer to God through prayer and bible study so more and more righteous desires are formed in our hearts.
Psalms 51:17
~ Cultivate a PENITENT and CONTRITE heart.
- If you are sensitive to the horrible effects that sin has on not only our neighbours but also your relationship with God, you will have a brokeness and hatred for all evil thoughts and practices.
Psalms 119:9-11
~ HIDE God's Word IN your heart.
- Through memorizing God's Word you can fight off temptation by recalling specific scriptures that relate to your present situation.
Proverbs 3:5-6
~ TRUST in the Lord with all your heart.
- God made us and therefore understands how we work. We must understand that the commands of scripture are not there to harm us but ultimately to benefit us.
2 Chronicles 16:9
~ Be FULLY COMMITTED to God. God actually searches for people whose hearts are fully committed to Him and He provides them with extra strength so that they can serve Him.
CONCLUSION:
Proverbs 4:20-27 ~ Above all else - GUARD YOUR HEART !
- The state of ones heart is critical. If our hearts are not in good condition we will make some decisions that we are certain to regret later.
- Have someone close to you who objectively can help you maintain a soft, sensitive and spiritually focused heart.
- Remember our hearts are the wellspring of our lives.
