Why ask Why?

August 20th, 2014

What is in the box game
You can ask as many yes or no questions

You can only ask "is it a (blank)?" once. If you get it right you win, wrong and you are out.

Ashby asks questions...

why is there white in the sky? The sky is cloudly
why is it cloudy? because it is going probably going to rain soon

why is it going to rain soon? God may decided the plants need a drink

why are the plants needing a drink? because plants have not had a drink in a while
why do the plants have not had a drink in a while?

Stop by asking her a question or saying I don't know.

Jesus asks why...

Budweiser commerical - why ask why

When Jesus asked Why:

1. He already knew the answer - Luke 5:17-26

Why did the Pharisee respond in this way? Why were not happy about sin being forgiven?

  • Jealous about attention
  • Lack of understanding or faith in their own heart

What would you be thinking in your heart?

He wanted to draw them out, engage them as a learning oportunity

2. He wanted to hear our answer / and for us to understand where we stood - Mark 4:35-41

How did the disciples respond to the storm?

  • With worry and anger
  • Assumed Jesus did not care about their lives

How did Jesus respond to the storm?

  • Did not address their question
  • He addressed the need of the time first

How did the disciples respond to Jesus' questions? Did not answer but instead asked a different question

Jesus rarely, if ever got an answer to his why questions.

As I read these why questions from Jesus, apply them to your heart:

  • Why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? Matthew 15:3
  • Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? Luke 6:46
  • Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Luke 12:26
  • Why are you trying to trap me? Matthew 22:18
  • Why are you bothering this woman? Matthew 26:10
  • Why are you so afraid? Mark 4:40
  • Why do you call me good? Mark 10:18
  • Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Luke 24:38
  • Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Luke 5:22
  • Why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath? John 7:23
  • Why is my language not clear to you? John 8:43
  • Why are you sleeping? Luke 22:46
  • Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? John 10:36
  • Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?  John 8:46
  • Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said. John 18:21
  • But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me? John 18:23
  • Why are you trying to kill me? John 7:19
  • Why have you forsaken me? - Matthew 27:46
  • [PAUSE]
  • Woman, why are you crying? John 20:15
