| 2008-03-04 - Power of Gratitude - It is so Hard and but I Love it Marriage - hardest year of a good marriage is the first one and the hardest year of a bad marriage is the last one God brings opposites together - rigid and let it go types Because God is trying to work off the rough edges If we are to grow through trials, we must learn to view them correctly First comes hurt, then can come anger or try to ignore it Other turn to "grin and bear it" or "this too must past" - blocks us from growth Garden of Gethsemance - Jesus expressed and dealt with emotional pain with prayer - Hebrews 5:7-10 If Jesus had to suffer, how much will we need to be perfected - Colossians 1:24 Trial both mature us and attract others at the same time Rejoice in the sufferings - 1 Peter 4:13 Must have heaven's perspective in every situation Even when can not figure out what God is doing - requires a child-like response Why me? > Why not me? |
| 2008-03-14 - Be Still My Soul - All the Time To be real, a relationship with God must be all-the-time If not, you are compartmentalizing your walk with God "I am with you always" - Matthew 28:20 ""Pray continually" - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Nehemiah prayed, wept,and fasted for days before talking wit King Artaxerxes then he prayed again right before talking to him just before opening his mouth - Nehemiah 2:4b
Both are needed - a quiet time can never replace all-the-time |
| 2008-04-06 - Falling in Love with God - Rediscovering each other Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him - Luke 24:13-32 They did not see Jesus because they lost hope and did not see him in a new light There is no joy like rediscovery - ex. rediscovering your spouse Some today:
We need to "rediscover" Jesus if we have lost hope of connecting with him again

| 2008-05-06 - Power of Spiritual Thinking - Emotions and Spirituality Emotions are God-given and a blessing Some refuse to get open and honest with their true feeling - from pride and fear In times of crisis, we usually get past our emotional blockage and express ourselves much better Negative emotions are not to be trusted Unless you allow others to break into your closed system of reasoning, the illogical will continue to seem perfectly logical Satan can use emotions in a damaging way - need to allow others to gain perspective Emotions are needed and seen in Jesus:

How content are you with what you have? - Philippians 4:12 1 Timothy 6:9-12 - not just avoid but flee from the love of money - Some use people, and love money - God uses money and loves people Who is master in your life? God OR Money - Luke 16:13 Avoid the extremes of loving it and envying those who have more than you Use money to the fullest extend to serve him and bless others |

Gospel allows us to start over and over again Shock > denial > anger > depression, apathy, or peace (grace of God) BIG PICTURE - being right with God, growing in our relationship with him, and helping others |
| 2008-05-14 - Power of Spiritual Thinking - I was Born this Way Son will not share the guilt of the father - Ezekiel 18:20 Environment or heredity - most likely both Must be slow to judge situations we do not completely understand otherwise may bless us with an understanding in a way we do not want Other extreme - develop a victim mentality regarding ourselves or others Can lead to being angry, use drugs, being immoral, or just about anything else We have difficulty applying this to a murder Answer: despite it being more difficult and having different backgrounds, the standard is still the same He does not ask us to do anything he will not enable us to do Identify the sin > repent of it > start relying on God grace > formulate a plan to overcome sin Psychology can find root causes but it is powerless to find a cure Hezekiah and Josiah were righteous amount a line of kings that were evil The promises of God are far greater than our past and present challenges Pray that we may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way - Colossians 1:10-12 |

| 2008-07-24 - 30 Days at the Cross - Freedom of Forgiveness True forgiveness - made possible by God Jesus forgave when it was most difficult by: Facing the truth Jesus didn't expect life to be fair He expected God to be fair He accepted everything from God without question (in the end) Judas only received kindness from Jesus Taught forgiving your brother should be limitless - Luke 17:1-5 Feeling the pain Jesus was totally honest with his feeling both God and man Greatest test was at the garden of Gethsemane Freeing his heart He trusted his Father and focused on him rather than on his own pain He yielded to God's sense of justice in the most unjust situation 1 Peter 2:23

Wallowing in guilt or losing self-confidence over your mistakes is not true humility - it is selfishness and lack of faith People in our family should feel free to come to us and tell us whatever is on their mind Our responsibility is to create a feeling of freedom and openness in our households If we do not, we are headed for a day of bitter reckoning |
| 2009-01-31 - Jesus with People - No Dogs in Heaven Matthew 15 - The Canaanite Women Jesus was silent and by his silent he tested and revealed both the hearts of his disciples and the heart of this woman Perhaps the instructions given earlier by Jesus send then to find the lost sheep of Israel was still in their mind Maybe thought: "he sent us to find the lost Israelite. too bad, she is a Gentile. Send her away." Jesus did not send her away but said - I was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel - Matthew 15:24 Jesus - it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their gods - Matthew 15:26 Savior was willing to be misunderstood in order to flush out faith or faithlessness in the heart of this woman In the end, Jesus affirmed her faith and admired her grit He did not see the woman as unsubmissive or rebellious or undeserving; he saw her as full of faith Jesus was more concerned about helping someone grow in their faith than he was keep up the nice-guy image |
